Appendix carry (my experience)
« on: January 26, 2018, 10:33:06 PM »
I am roughly 18 months in to appendix carry. I felt it was necessary as I am training more civilian ccw carriers these days and the prevailing trend is toward AIWB carry.

Initially I hated it. After roughly 1000 presentations over a two week period I decided it was time to venture out in the public with my gun jabbed in to my pelvis. You really gotta find your pants that ride a little high, because the low slung Levi’s are less than desirable.

I fought with it and cussed it on 6 hour car rides and we finally decided about a month of EDC that it was going to work out.

Honestly I hate that I like it. It’s nice having it right there in your work space and not printing off your hip when you bend over. It conceals just as good really and honestly speaking if you are disarming to use the facilities, you can just unsnap and leave it in the holster. I added a step to my reluctant re-holster, where I take a half step back with my strong side leg and it effectively removes my femoral out of the line of fire.

To clear cover and present from appendix is stupid fast. From day 1 I could put rounds on paper just as fast as clearing and drawing from 3:30’sh. At the end of my transition period I was nearly a half second faster. My traditional duty draw has not suffered either like I was concerned about.

I’ve evolved... give it an honest effort. You might like it!

I ordered an AIWB carry holster that was getting clearanced over at midway.

I OWB carry just inside my right hip, but that means I always am in a jacket, unbloused shirt, bomber jacket or the like. That's fine for the first 15 minutes after being outside doing a security check at church, but thereafter with 300 human heaters getting all giggy with the holy spirit, I start to get pretty hot PDQ.

And some of the sheeple attendees think our security guys are "A bit much!" They would prefer that we would just stand there and pray over the drunk who has just popped some pills, like the lady during service last Sunday. I explained to the man who thought we were a bit too aggressive that number one, he can come and join the security team and share his views, and secondly, that if you dislocate someone's arm, you have their undivided attention and that is a great time to share the truth of our Lord!

So, I know, off topic. Point is I want to be more comfortable, although really, I'd like to be back in my old drop leg and who cares who things what about it. But in these womanized times we live in, I'll fall inline and be respectful of the pastor's wishes. BTW, he likes how a loud mouth gets to his third syllable when he is wrapped up and escorted (Drug) out of the church...So do we!)

So tonight is my first service with an AIWBC...

I personally carry IWB on my right hip.  I can do it with just an open shirt over a t shirt, even with a G19.  Crossbreed makes some great holsters.

Well according to the regs, that just ain't true.  It's amazing how much weight one gains when one is in a walking boot for 4 months after surgery and is now allowed to finally run 9 months after...

Nah...still got that bug.  Got a bunch of cartilage, tendons, and ligaments repaired in my ankle.  Messed it up bad a bunch of years ago and finally got it repaired!

I too have been thinking of going the aiwb route. I currently utilize an alien gear iwb for the .38 bodyguard on my 8:30 clock. It is rediculously comfy but I print even that small frame. I also have been wanting to carry my Shield 9 more with which I am very proficient. But sitting down in the truck with a seatbelt on is negative for comfort. Maybe I’ll look into the steel clip that can be installed on the back of the slide for a minimal holster footprint. Anyone have experience with that approach?

Permanent no run profile for now, working on getting that lifted so they will take me to flight school.  Looking pretty good as of right now...definitely an improvement over pre-surgery.

I hate them. Too difficult to safely reholster. Generally sit too deep for good purchase on the draw. One point of contact (the clip) allows your weapon to rotate too much for a consistent grip. Too many people carrying that way wo a proper trigger guard as well. Alien gear holsters are pretty bulky. I’d encourage you to try out a crossbreed and better cover garments. Dark colors eliminate shadows, decrease signature significantly.

When considering a ccw posture, too many people have their priorities mixed up.

1. Quality apparatus
2. Economy of time, economy of motion (drawing and reholstering)
3. Concealability
4. Comfort

Most people don’t walk around looking for guns printing. Save us, us cops and realmen. We get overly paranoid about printing and overly hung up on comfort when we should be assessing our battlespaces and gearing/training up appropriately for them.

I can see your point on being difficult to reholster. I have a simple concealmentexpress iwb kydex for the shield it’s very easy to draw from and to return it. It’s actially quite pleasant to practice with, just dang uncomfortable to wear all day(also 8:30ish). Maybe I’ll just keep on keeping on.

About being overly preoccupied with who sees the CW, I certainly remember I was just that. When I first started carrying I adjusted all the time even looked at my reflection whenever I could. I was def a noob and it showed. It took a while to gain confidence. What did help me is just what you said, I finally understood that the general publics’ psyche isn’t tuned to who is hiding something. But they sure will be if you aren’t comfortable in your own skin!!  Usually those that may notice have one too and know better. You nod and move on.

I will attest to that!

I still  like the MP either in the cargo pocket (cool) or now I am using the Sportsman Guide vest as there is still a chill out there.

5.11 EDC APEX T-Rail Belt 1.5 " Wide Ergonomic TPU Coated B10 Webbing, Black, Medium https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00GJQKJPK/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_RhFgEbQSAYMH4

I’ve had it about 4-5 years now. Looks like leather, feels like rubber. It is stiff and has no stretch.
