Went smooth as silk for those who behaved. Watched a lot on my phone.

Heard a few blocks away over 80 people were arrested and causing lots of damage. Then the kid who started a fire in NY and bragged about it to a reporter.

And he said "Because I felt like it". Typical answer.  They have no idea why.  But feel they need to "express" themselves.
That's all fine until we decide to express ourselves some in response.

And now if we can get rid of our ...

Don't even know what to call him...SMH.

The world is moving right in the wake of all the hatred coming out of Islam. Everyday people can clearly see that welcoming muslims has been backfiring everywhere.

I expect to see Canada go more conservative, for France and a few more to leave the EU, and the EU itself to fail. The Hqts in Brussels can be converted into another Trump hotel!

As I understand it, all of the pilots flying in that movie were 160th guys who were part of the actual mission they were portraying.
Yes, I think so

I won't mention names, but some of those guys are just giants in aviation

The flying in that movie was pretty spectacular. I know you're partial to the Chin-hook, but I'd love to have a Little Bird. Maybe when I win that elusive LOTTO. LOL

I like em to!

I flew little birds in the regiment some, and also for Black Water. They are definitely pretty swoopy

Good point!

I know that I surely want some. Not sure if I'd "need" one right away. I would envision the price coming down once the niche market expanded to main stream

Bug-Out Bag and Camping gear / Re: Clear plastic on a shelter
« on: January 19, 2017, 06:55:28 PM »
So this weekend was cold weather training for my SAR team. Not that cold as it was about 20-25 degrees or so. We hiked 2/3 of the way up a small mountain and then in a clearing we broke up into teams to build shelters. The guy I was with showed me something I had never seen before and it works like a charm, and I wanted to pass it on.

We made a "diamond" shaped shelter with my tarp/tent with three corners anchored and the last one tied to a tree. Then we had a fire a couple of feet from the opening. The tarp tent is pretty sturdy and is aluminized or something on the in-side so it reflects heat pretty well.

Well (and this is the part I was glad to learn)....he had some 3 mil plastic....just a cheapo type drop cloth plastic he grabbed at Home Depot. Well he laid that over the opening we had and got one edge held down tight....so we had a clear "flap" as an entry way. I was amazed at how warm it got inside there. The heat passed through that clear plastic so easily...and no wind loss. He had a "space blanket" on the floor of it as well and it was toasty warm in there in absolutely no time. Definitely would be a great way to shelter someone out of the wind/cold/rain and keep them warm.

Plus the plastic is cheap, you can get them at Wally World or HD/Lowes very easily. If you haven't done it (maybe you guys all knew this anyway!  :embarrassed: ) I would urge you to give it a whirl.....good for teaching kids too. Just thought I would pass that along.
I always just warmed up in the exhaust of a turbine engine at idle that was not connected to a jet ;-)

Stewie, it's good that you're taking notes and are going to fortify the place. Sorry, you received so much rain but you could probably use the rainfall.

Don, your poll was a flop btw. Only 9 people voted and I was one of them........

Well, that starter I put on three months ago during the motor fiasco is officially taking a big poop. Making some funny noises, hasn't left me stranded yet but it's under warranty so that is being swapped shortly. Snow blower needed carb torn apart and cleaned then wife picked up a screw last night & we awoke to a flat this morning. Not my week.....

I did work on back rack a little more today & decided a couple pieces are getting cutoff & replaced as the design evolves.....

& I ordered a 2" bar clamp machined to mount "stuff" to roll bars made of 2" tube today.
You know the rules...

A safe space devoid of idiots or Panama boys, like out in the woods or away from those scathe mulch beds that someone is so scared of.
One day when you're hopelessly mired in some decorative mulch, we'll see how funny you think it is then!!!!!!

19225
Its getting there

19226
Then I started covering myself with fiberglass shards and even managed to get some of the stuff on the walls!

It will get covered with that purdy pink foam board you ladies like so much! ;-)

19227
Next I drilled and installed the permanent anchor bolts (Which are removable for break-down) and removed the interior 3" wood screws that had held the business together up to this point

Those corners will get trimmed out with 4" X 3/4" painted pine board

19228
And hung one door, but something weird happened, and the door doesn't fit well now. I have to cut a section out of the center frame which isn't easy to get a tad more room

19229
Then I threw some color on the collector panels

19230
Those doors turned out great. I am using Bear ultimate paint, I think its called. It's not the best, but the next step down. I think it is warranted for three months not to fall off or spontaneously combust and it is hippie approved!

19231
I am not sold yet on the clear corrugated panel.  I have three main issues with it and am thinking a clear single pane glass would be better.  It would be very interesting to compare the two directly.  Will your panels work?  Yes. But will they be the most optimum, premium, best possible solution?  I think more testing is required.

1.  not completely clear, anything less than totally clear will block sunlight and reflect the energy back outside instead of letting it in.
2.  corrugations increase surface area, increasing the heat loss through the window
3.  corrugations have so many different angles, it would diffuse the light into some strange angles, again seems less efficient.
I'm just using the same material that is recommended by others over on the solar site.
Glass is a good transmitter, but it can be broken easily
THis stuff is a bit more robust and is less expensive.
Folks have a lot of success with the corrougated clear panel, and the light transmission is pretty close to clear glass from what I have read.
I am not going for the most and the best here. I am only trying to keep water from freezing, nothing more. This should accomplish the task so it solves a major problem for me.
Collectors I make later on might have better panels, like a clear poly-acrylic, but those would have cost $90 per collector and blown the budget up.
Part of the "Charm" of this is that it is quick, easy , and cheap. Na it works, so it checks the block, and that's all I need it to do.
Thanks for the comments though, they are all valid, mostly...

Coffee Induced Early Morning Rant / Toxic Masculinity??? Guilty!
« on: January 18, 2017, 10:59:08 AM »
'Toxic masculinity'? Dude, now America's universities are turning men into women
Universities across the fruited plain are trying to convince men to grow lady parts. And that’s a problem, America.

Campus Reform recently reported on efforts to provide “safe spaces” to fight back against what the academic world calls, “toxic masculinity.”

Click here for a free subscription to Todd’s newsletter: a must-read for conservatives.

Instead of a country full of manly men, our universities want a nation full of Pajama Boys.

Oregon State University is hosting a “health masculinities conference.” Students will “engage in collective imagining to construct new futures for masculinities, unrestricted by power, privilege, and oppression.”

Brown University has a program titled, “Masculinity 101” – for “students who identify as men,” Campus Reform reports.

Get a load of the course description titled, “Unlearning Toxic Masculinity:”

“Men will often resort to violence to resolve conflict because anger is the only emotion that they have been socialized to express. Unfortunately, the way that young men are conditioned to view sex and their need to be dominant and have power over others also contribute to instances of sexual assault and other forms of interpersonal violence on college campuses.”

In the hit Broadway musical “My Fair Lady,” Professor Henry Higgins laments in a song, “Why can’t a woman be more like a man?” Today, Professor Higgins might be singing a different tune, “Why can’t a man be more like a woman?”

Could you imagine the Greatest Generation flitting about town after a spa and dishing about their inner-most thoughts with life coaches?

In today’s reengineered version of manhood, guys no longer have friends – they have bromances and they settle disputes by hugging it out.

Men’s magazines are now filled with articles like, “Should a Man Show Nipple?” and “What Men Know about Wearing Eyeliner.” A survey by AskMen.com found that 20 percent of men have no problem wearing makeup.

In my book, “Dispatches From Bitter America,” I pondered these developments.

Can you imagine John Wayne using moisturizer and a concealer stick to hide razor nicks? Would today’s version of "The Godfather" accessorize with Dolche Gabana while settling “family” business with group hugs?

A few years ago I conducted an unscientific poll to determine what the average American woman looks for in a man.

The poll results were not all that surprising. Ladies want a man who loves God and loves his family. They also want a man who, in no particular order:

1. Has a job;

2. Drives a pickup truck;

3. Uses the bathroom standing up;

4. Eats meat;

5. And is willing to carry them out of a burning building.

In other words -- they want the kind of man made in God's image -- not the image of some effeminate intellectual stuffed in skinny jeans sipping chai tea with his pinky finger extended

19236
We see lots of pictures of wounded male veterans but women vets get wounded and maimed too.

You  may need to take a second, closer look though.

The first thing I saw was a bunch of beautiful smiles.

Study this picture again. Let the story it tells sink in.  These women and many others, as well as their male comrades, paid  this price for our freedoms.

And they did it for less than what welfare recipients are paid!!!

DID YOU GET THAT?!?

There is more patriotism and class in those 11 ladies pictured than the majority of Congress and the (present) White House combined!!!

And a HELL of a lot more than those over-paid athletes who choose to “take a knee” when the National Anthem is played!!!!

They risked these injuries (or death) FOR AMERICA!

GOD BLESS ALL OF THEM!!

19237
And then started painting some of the trim.

Note: Most of the trim is not installed yet. I plan to create it, then paint it seperately and assemble once on site

19238
Then after taping off the doors, I started painting the trim

19239
I created a ledge just above the acrylic and beveled the edge so that water will drip away from the plastic (I think)

19240
Then I placed them into the cutouts in the structure

And trimmed around them creating a flange which I can attach weather stripping to the backside to help seal in the heated air

19241
That stuff latched right onto the acrylic panel. I'll have to use a saw to remove the clear stuff if I ever need to. I used a saw, then some sand paper to contour in the edges enough to hold paint and not look like a complete mess

19242
With the foam all properly hardened, I sanded down the edges and shaped the collectors up s little better

19243
that looks pretty sweet, I'm really interested on your temperature differentials when all is said and done since I'm only a few.miles north of you.

Dave
Should have it installed early in Feb, so we'll know soon.

I'd offer to lend a hand, but I'm afraid I'd end up face first in the back of your truck with my head in a gunny sack to keep the location secure.  That being said, I'd probably still be willing to help if you needed it, I'm a little odd like that.

Dave
I run the local security ministry where I am teaching a bunch of folks stuff like you just described. If you showed up, we may treat you as a training aid!
Dunno, it'd be fun for us!
Wanna show up at a training session?
Think about it... ;-)

Point if order here:

I don't worry or get too wrapped up about things these days
I just make my requests known to the Lord, then move out smartly knowing he has this
Thereby avoiding the worry part
Result: I'm happy or content most of the time

19250
Don that looks really great. Any thought to mounting the top with a hinge? Then you cold angle them to maximize solar heat in the winter then let them close back up in the spring past freezing weather. I'm very interested in your temp results.
Wil, like I've said before the expectations for these, my first solar heat collectors are low...Just keep the water tanks from freezing in the winter, nothing more

But I have started something here which I will be expanding on

I see some more solar collectors to warm the underside of the camper, thereby reducing heating needs inside
I see a panel or two warming 50 gallons of water so I can take my very necessary "beauty-bath."
I want now to incorporate several of these passive collectors into the top side of the "Shed" to make hot water and help heat that thing during the cold months, and perhaps one or two heating the underside of the shed once I skirt that thing off to warm the floor and hopefully radiate a couple of degrees of BTU type warmies into the shop of the shed.
I want to add a year-round green house, dome type with a central fish tank. I thought I might use a collector or similiar technology to warm that and keep the water up around 70F
By the time I add my proper home, likely a partially buried log home, I'll incorporate lots of technology into the design to take advantage of low angle winter sunlight

But as for hinged top: Nope.
