Title: My Cabin Build/Reno
Post by: Sammconn on August 13, 2015, 02:14:29 PM
Well here we go, I've assembled most of the pictures i can find. Looking through them I am sure some are missing.
This is a collection of two phones, and no less than three different cameras, so it's been a bit of a recce to get this meany together.

Long story longer, 15 years ago, when we moved up here we discussed if we wanted to think about a cabin.
Though long and hard, and a few were for sale, including this one. I spent a few weekends visiting the potential candidates, and this would be the one.
Got to talking with mama, and we decided we did not need to incur any more debt that we were in at the time.
So reluctantly we passed on the opportunity. The cabin sites on this lake are all on crown land, via a 100 year lease, and two years later, the decision was made to no longer issue new leases. So here we were, thinking of a few spots, paying down debt, and collecting 'stuff', and now we're screwed.

Fast forward twelve years, three more owners, and this very cabin is up for sale again.
Talked with the owner, went and had a look, not a lot had changed, but there was an incredible amount of 'junk' and 'mess' kicking about.
We discussed price, and were a long way apart. I had a number in which I could cut a cheque and be done, a fair way off where the owner was.
Like before, didn't want to borrow to do it, so we passed. The summer went by, I was working a camp job out of town, home for my week in late September or October, I don't exactly remember and will find out.
A quiet Saturday morning, me and mama just relaxing with the dogs, and the phone rings.

My number had just been called! Apparently the owner needed it gone, did not know my number, as I had never mentioned it earlier in the year, but said it out loud to me. I hung up in awe, told mama, and off to the lake we went to meet him. Looked the place over and wrote the cheque.

Here it is that day, pulled up in the boat and snapped a few pics.

And as much as I can't believe it, I didn't have any up to date interior pictures.
So yall are going to have to wait.
I found one of the kitchen.

So winter one we made due as it was.
Heck we didn't really know what we had, or what it needed.

We weren't out much prior to winter, and maybe not at all as I was working out of town, if I remember correctly there were only a couple day trips.

Our first real stay was for Christmas break (mama is school secretary) and had a great couple weeks out. The first night was chilly, I had lit the fire earlier in the day, but we would soon don't that 900 square feet at -40 takes in the neighbourhood of 12 hours to thaw and get a good beat soak.

Big Bertha, as the original owner called the wood stove is a monster. She throws heat like no tomorrow, and we got through the first cool night. Nothing short of a beautiful sleep, we awoke and began to enjoy the piece and quiet that this place is full of.
Fast forward to night two, it's still -40, so I load the stove up like the first night, remember the 12 hour heat soak... Well at 3am, I woke up dang near melting. The dogs were all panting and it was 45 Celsius (115 Fahrenheit) inside the cabin. I opened all the doors and sat out in the cold with the three dogs and chilled some. It took the better part of an hour for mama to realize I was not in bed. This happened to be the first of a few cookouts old Bertha has thrown at us.

Here is Bertha. 5/16 stove plate, fire brick lined, 500 or so odd pounds. Hand built by one of the old boys back in the day. This cabin was built mid 90's and the stove made for it.

So we weathered out the winter making plans for what was to happen the next summer.

The dogs love the freedom, all year round.

Even in the spring slush season. The lake is the reservoir for the hydro dam I work at. Water level fluctuations cause all kinds of havoc on the ice, and in the spring we get our nice slush holes.
I'm not sure how or why but the two Labs love it.

I'm going to do my best to keep this all in order, but I just noticed that the ash pile that was my old shed is in the background. Winter two, but the dogs still love the water.

It's not too bad, this stuff was about 15-18" deep. The 'safe' stuff to play in with the sled. Still shallow enough to not flood stuff if you mess up, but deep enough to learn water maneuvers on the snowmobile.

So with spring on its way, and supplies in hand, it was time to make several trips across with them.
This is one of the several loads of lumber I hauled.

(http://i1134.photobucket.com/albums/m605/sammconn/Cabin/crazy%20hauling%20stuff/IMG_0013.jpg) (http://s1134.photobucket.com/user/sammconn/media/Cabin/crazy%20hauling%20stuff/IMG_0013.jpg.html)

(http://i1134.photobucket.com/albums/m605/sammconn/Cabin/crazy%20hauling%20stuff/IMG_0012_1.jpg) (http://s1134.photobucket.com/user/sammconn/media/Cabin/crazy%20hauling%20stuff/IMG_0012_1.jpg.html)

Between my buddy and I, it was four loads to my place like this one. As well as two to his.
This was just the lumber, then came the roofing supplies and siding.

So come spring time, more stuff had arrived, and needed to be hauled out.
My poor boat has been a barge more that any should, and here was one of the loads.

(http://i1134.photobucket.com/albums/m605/sammconn/Cabin/crazy%20hauling%20stuff/IMG_0376.jpg) (http://s1134.photobucket.com/user/sammconn/media/Cabin/crazy%20hauling%20stuff/IMG_0376.jpg.html)

But let's not forget, when you come across good sized beams, always bring them home too.

(http://i1134.photobucket.com/albums/m605/sammconn/Cabin/crazy%20hauling%20stuff/IMG_0115.jpg) (http://s1134.photobucket.com/user/sammconn/media/Cabin/crazy%20hauling%20stuff/IMG_0115.jpg.html)
This was a great find, 2x8 X4 by 16 foot long, I think there are four strapped here.
An old double wide trailer was scrapped and hauled to the dump, Walmart as we refer to it, and to this day can reclaim hing from it. I had more beams than I could use. Filled the skidoo trailer two or three layers deep. I cut them into what I figured would be usable lengths, 8, 12, and 16 footers.

Very nice.  Brings back memories of my grandparents' cabin and 10 acres on Caliper Lake near Nestor Falls in Ontario.  They owned it from the late 1930's until the early 1980's.  My best summers as a kid were spend there fishing from wooden boats my grandfather made;  Northern Pike, Walleye, Perch, Crappie and the elusive Muskie!  No electricity save for a small generator my grandfather would fire up for an hour each night so they could watch the news out of Fort Frances.  The property is now part of Caliper Lake Provincial Park.

Lund Pro V ? How do you like it?
It's actually the Rebel SS Sport. It's an 18+ footer, and I really like it. Having said that I wish it were a Pro V, I think they are a little heavier and deeper. It handles very well in up to four foot stuff, and with the top up will manage more, but the pucker factor increases with wave height past that point. There is a story there to follow later on.

For your own island, who cares about the cold!!!

How many really cold months do you get?

Is that up in AK??

The island is shared, there are eight cabins on it in total. Closest neighbor is about 300 yards away through the bush.
So basically alone.
Winter officially starts at some point late October, ice is forming at shore, puddles long frozen, small ponds froze over.
It ends sometime April-May depending on the year.
Last year, it was 2 November when I called summer over. Had to deal with 1/2" of pretty good ice out to 10 feet or so from shore or so. By 22 November I had made the walk across to check ice, we had a heck of a freeze, and were at 12" minimum by then. We had 'winter' until end of April, with my last trips hauling stuff across on 2 May.
And 30 May this spring, moved my dock into place.
So the official cold season is 6-7 months depending on the year.

I'm up in Northern Manitoba, north of 56th, 200 miles or so from the Hudson Bay.

So the plans for the summer of 2013 were grand, a serious undertaking, and were as follows:

1 - Roof, sunroom leaking, and what other damage? Previous owners not carpenters...
2 - Siding, plywood ok for a while, but squirrels, birds eat hole and take up residence.
3 - Decks, R&R with new pressure treated and not look back.
4 - Shed, original, slapped together with left overs and roof and walls leaked something bad.
5 - Wood shed, fix it up, and make it a tad bigger, general facelift.
6 - Chimney, original, 20+ years old, and scary! As well as un-insurable.
7 - Hope I have enough time.

So, first up on the list was the roof. Unfortunately it was only 4-5 years old, and was junk.
One of the PO's had done it, and didn't take into account the low slope of the sunroom.
For those that don't know, anything under a 3-12 pitch is too low a slope for regular shingles.
This ratio can be debated, but as a general rule that is the number I use. (Worked for a roofing contractor for a couple summers in my younger years.)

So off came the shingles on the sunroom.

(http://i1134.photobucket.com/albums/m605/sammconn/Cabin/roofing/IMG_0066.jpg) (http://s1134.photobucket.com/user/sammconn/media/Cabin/roofing/IMG_0066.jpg.html)

Yes that's my fur hat sitting there, did I mention I'm generally first last off, both ice and water.
mornings were in the 20's so a touch chilly until you get going.

(http://i1134.photobucket.com/albums/m605/sammconn/Cabin/roofing/IMG_0067.jpg) (http://s1134.photobucket.com/user/sammconn/media/Cabin/roofing/IMG_0067.jpg.html)

Yes it is as rotten as it looks, and I gingerly stripped away the sheathing.

(http://i1134.photobucket.com/albums/m605/sammconn/Cabin/roofing/IMG_0069.jpg) (http://s1134.photobucket.com/user/sammconn/media/Cabin/roofing/IMG_0069.jpg.html)

(http://i1134.photobucket.com/albums/m605/sammconn/Cabin/roofing/IMG_0070.jpg) (http://s1134.photobucket.com/user/sammconn/media/Cabin/roofing/IMG_0070.jpg.html)

It was so bad, one of the spots I set the hammer down it fell right through. And my 240 pound arse was sitting right there with it. Made me really think to stay on the rafters!
Title: Re: My Cabin Build/Reno
Post by: Sammconn on August 16, 2015, 09:18:47 PM
So with the sheathing gone, stripped off the wiring for the lights and assessed what I had.

(http://i1134.photobucket.com/albums/m605/sammconn/Cabin/roofing/IMG_0072.jpg) (http://s1134.photobucket.com/user/sammconn/media/Cabin/roofing/IMG_0072.jpg.html)

(http://i1134.photobucket.com/albums/m605/sammconn/Cabin/roofing/IMG_0073.jpg) (http://s1134.photobucket.com/user/sammconn/media/Cabin/roofing/IMG_0073.jpg.html)

I had some serious rot to contend with, was what I had.

(http://i1134.photobucket.com/albums/m605/sammconn/Cabin/roofing/IMG_0073.jpg) (http://s1134.photobucket.com/user/sammconn/media/Cabin/roofing/IMG_0073.jpg.html)

So, it all came down.

(http://i1134.photobucket.com/albums/m605/sammconn/Cabin/roofing/IMG_0074.jpg) (http://s1134.photobucket.com/user/sammconn/media/Cabin/roofing/IMG_0074.jpg.html)
Title: Re: My Cabin Build/Reno

I re-used some of the boards that were not totaled they had to be shortened, so I lowered the slope of the roof some more.

(http://i1134.photobucket.com/albums/m605/sammconn/Cabin/roofing/IMG_0075.jpg) (http://s1134.photobucket.com/user/sammconn/media/Cabin/roofing/IMG_0075.jpg.html)

You can see that about 3 feet of the old ones was the amount to be taken off.
A view from underneath.

(http://i1134.photobucket.com/albums/m605/sammconn/Cabin/roofing/IMG_0076.jpg) (http://s1134.photobucket.com/user/sammconn/media/Cabin/roofing/IMG_0076.jpg.html)

In the process of trimming the ends.

(http://i1134.photobucket.com/albums/m605/sammconn/Cabin/roofing/IMG_0080.jpg) (http://s1134.photobucket.com/user/sammconn/media/Cabin/roofing/IMG_0080.jpg.html)

And the rotten mess that used to be the roof.

(http://i1134.photobucket.com/albums/m605/sammconn/Cabin/roofing/IMG_0081.jpg) (http://s1134.photobucket.com/user/sammconn/media/Cabin/roofing/IMG_0081.jpg.html)
Title: Re: My Cabin Build/Reno

Now, I'd gone from about 18 inches of slope on this roof, to a nearly flat 8" on 12 feet.
here you can see how flat it is.

(http://i1134.photobucket.com/albums/m605/sammconn/Cabin/roofing/IMG_0082.jpg) (http://s1134.photobucket.com/user/sammconn/media/Cabin/roofing/IMG_0082.jpg.html)

Coming together.

(http://i1134.photobucket.com/albums/m605/sammconn/Cabin/roofing/IMG_0083.jpg) (http://s1134.photobucket.com/user/sammconn/media/Cabin/roofing/IMG_0083.jpg.html)

And starting to sheet it back up.

(http://i1134.photobucket.com/albums/m605/sammconn/Cabin/roofing/IMG_0085.jpg) (http://s1134.photobucket.com/user/sammconn/media/Cabin/roofing/IMG_0085.jpg.html)

Yes the satellite was still hooked up, and that is why this end was saved for last.

(http://i1134.photobucket.com/albums/m605/sammconn/Cabin/roofing/IMG_0086.jpg) (http://s1134.photobucket.com/user/sammconn/media/Cabin/roofing/IMG_0086.jpg.html)

A new day has come, and time to finish up this part of the roof.

(http://i1134.photobucket.com/albums/m605/sammconn/Cabin/roofing/IMG_0089.jpg) (http://s1134.photobucket.com/user/sammconn/media/Cabin/roofing/IMG_0089.jpg.html)

So onto fascia board installation.

(http://i1134.photobucket.com/albums/m605/sammconn/Cabin/roofing/IMG_0090.jpg) (http://s1134.photobucket.com/user/sammconn/media/Cabin/roofing/IMG_0090.jpg.html)

(http://i1134.photobucket.com/albums/m605/sammconn/Cabin/roofing/IMG_0091.jpg) (http://s1134.photobucket.com/user/sammconn/media/Cabin/roofing/IMG_0091.jpg.html)

I had recruited my buddy for a couple days to help with the roof. Then I spotted some ice, coming towards the island.
The lake is a river, and flows slowly, but flows.

(http://i1134.photobucket.com/albums/m605/sammconn/Cabin/roofing/IMG_0092.jpg) (http://s1134.photobucket.com/user/sammconn/media/Cabin/roofing/IMG_0092.jpg.html)

And there was some serious ice come by this day!

(http://i1134.photobucket.com/albums/m605/sammconn/Cabin/roofing/IMG_0097.jpg) (http://s1134.photobucket.com/user/sammconn/media/Cabin/roofing/IMG_0097.jpg.html)

So on this really low slope, I went with full half lap rolled roofing, peel and stick, with adhesive to boot.
It was a roll on affair, almost like water.

(http://i1134.photobucket.com/albums/m605/sammconn/Cabin/roofing/IMG_0102.jpg) (http://s1134.photobucket.com/user/sammconn/media/Cabin/roofing/IMG_0102.jpg.html)

And row by row it went on.

(http://i1134.photobucket.com/albums/m605/sammconn/Cabin/roofing/IMG_0104.jpg) (http://s1134.photobucket.com/user/sammconn/media/Cabin/roofing/IMG_0104.jpg.html)

So with the sunroom done, it was on to the basic 3-tab strip and replace.
A bit of tin bashing to shed water onto shingles, and clear the low slope, and away we go.

(http://i1134.photobucket.com/albums/m605/sammconn/Cabin/roofing/IMG_0141.jpg) (http://s1134.photobucket.com/user/sammconn/media/Cabin/roofing/IMG_0141.jpg.html)

And front side pretty well done.

(http://i1134.photobucket.com/albums/m605/sammconn/Cabin/roofing/IMG_0129.jpg) (http://s1134.photobucket.com/user/sammconn/media/Cabin/roofing/IMG_0129.jpg.html)

Ripped off the rear, and covered it up.

(http://i1134.photobucket.com/albums/m605/sammconn/Cabin/roofing/IMG_0136.jpg) (http://s1134.photobucket.com/user/sammconn/media/Cabin/roofing/IMG_0136.jpg.html)

Ready for ridge cap!

So with the roof looked after it was on to siding.
Never done it, no clue what to expect.
Spent a few hours reading up on it, and said lets do it.
Started out by installing house wrap, placing corners and J trim around things (windows, doors, soffits)

Then on goes a starter strip, and then the siding locks in on the lock joint.

I started on the back to learn how this stuff works, and its not too bad once you get going.

And row by row it goes up.

(http://i1134.photobucket.com/albums/m605/sammconn/Cabin/Siding/IMG_0362.jpg) (http://s1134.photobucket.com/user/sammconn/media/Cabin/Siding/IMG_0362.jpg.html)

Figuring out how to get it around windows was bout the worst of it. Measure six times cut twice, and its still too short!
Somehow it all worked out, and the back wall was done!

So with the siding 'thing' 'figured out', it was time to get at the rest.
So up went new fascia and soffit parts.

(http://i1134.photobucket.com/albums/m605/sammconn/Cabin/Siding/IMG_0144.jpg) (http://s1134.photobucket.com/user/sammconn/media/Cabin/Siding/IMG_0144.jpg.html)

Then the decks needed to be replaced to get the siding at the right height.
So out with the old.

I then started tightening up the nails on the plywood.
With each blow, I had friends appear  :o.
In the form of CARPENTER ANTS!  :-\ :-\ :-\
Not good! A quick trip around the bottom with the skillsaw about 2 feet up to investigate.

Out with the insulation, and what a mess!

All kinds of raid and ant killers were then liberally applied to each nest I found. And there were many.
I guess it explained the PO's comment that there were ants in the cabin every now and then.

So with the visitors place in the permanent penalty box, I was able to move back to the deck.

House wrap, then the ledger boards then the floor joists.

Then on to the deck boards.
I went with the 'cedartone' treated deck boards. Time will tell how the cedar treatment hold up.

(http://i1134.photobucket.com/albums/m605/sammconn/Cabin/Decks/IMG_0225.jpg) (http://s1134.photobucket.com/user/sammconn/media/Cabin/Decks/IMG_0225.jpg.html)

I used a produce called 'Tiger Claw' fasteners for the decks. No visible fasteners, but a bit more work.
They have held up well through two full years now.

(http://i1134.photobucket.com/albums/m605/sammconn/Cabin/Decks/IMG_0229.jpg) (http://s1134.photobucket.com/user/sammconn/media/Cabin/Decks/IMG_0229.jpg.html)

This one all done, and Holly approved!

With that deck back in service, time to tackle the other side.

So over on the other side, Carlee is mad at me now. She's almost 14, stubborn, set in her ways, and no longer has 'her' stairs.

(http://i1134.photobucket.com/albums/m605/sammconn/Cabin/Decks/IMG_0307.jpg) (http://s1134.photobucket.com/user/sammconn/media/Cabin/Decks/IMG_0307.jpg.html)

So given the two distinct doorway threshold heights, I had to maintain the two level deck.

(http://i1134.photobucket.com/albums/m605/sammconn/Cabin/Decks/IMG_0308.jpg) (http://s1134.photobucket.com/user/sammconn/media/Cabin/Decks/IMG_0308.jpg.html)

So on go the doorway deck boards to have easy access to the privy for the night.

(http://i1134.photobucket.com/albums/m605/sammconn/Cabin/Decks/IMG_0310.jpg) (http://s1134.photobucket.com/user/sammconn/media/Cabin/Decks/IMG_0310.jpg.html)

I simply dropped the old stairs in for the night and we were set.

It was then time to change the chimney, as it finally showed up.
The old one was original, circa 1993-4, and besides probably being 'burnt out' was very dirty.

(http://i1134.photobucket.com/albums/m605/sammconn/Cabin/chimney/IMG_0142.jpg) (http://s1134.photobucket.com/user/sammconn/media/Cabin/chimney/IMG_0142.jpg.html)

The creosote buildup was at least 3/4" thick.

Excellent re do of a comfortable place

On thing I am thinking is the pitch (Or lack there of) of the sunroom roof. How much of a snow load does that carry now...Any concerns?

I figured that would garner a few chuckles!

On the snow load, no real concern, for whatever reason it doesn't collect on the front so much. (only a bit better than a foot)
As well, we normally don't get any of the real heavy wet stuff, that many see, we are so dry in the winter that the snow typically is light enough to blow everywhere.
It is only 8 feet span as well, I was originally concerned the first winter, as I could see the rot above.
The solar panel is now about 2 feet off the roof, and always stays above, as does the satellite dish, which is far lower.

So in order to satisfy any insurance company, I had to bite the bullet and replace the chimney.
After taking the old one out, it was a very good investment. The old one was plain done, insulation power-puffing out as I handled it.
So I ended up with a Supervent Selkirk Chimney.
Step 1 was to install the interior trim ring, which meant opening up the hole in the steel panel.

(http://i1134.photobucket.com/albums/m605/sammconn/Cabin/chimney/IMG_0397.jpg) (http://s1134.photobucket.com/user/sammconn/media/Cabin/chimney/IMG_0397.jpg.html)

It was some serious tin, probably 14 or 16 gauge!
With the hole cut to size, the chimney support ring is installed inside the trim ring.

(http://i1134.photobucket.com/albums/m605/sammconn/Cabin/chimney/IMG_0398.jpg) (http://s1134.photobucket.com/user/sammconn/media/Cabin/chimney/IMG_0398.jpg.html)

Due to our location, pictures of all the details were taken for the insurance companies, as none would actually come.
Here is the top side of the chimney support and framing.

(http://i1134.photobucket.com/albums/m605/sammconn/Cabin/chimney/IMG_0399.jpg) (http://s1134.photobucket.com/user/sammconn/media/Cabin/chimney/IMG_0399.jpg.html)

First section of chimney in, attic heat shield in.

(http://i1134.photobucket.com/albums/m605/sammconn/Cabin/chimney/IMG_0400.jpg) (http://s1134.photobucket.com/user/sammconn/media/Cabin/chimney/IMG_0400.jpg.html)

Then it was simply drop the chimney pieces in, 1/4 turn twist together, and band clamp the joints.

(http://i1134.photobucket.com/albums/m605/sammconn/Cabin/chimney/IMG_0404.jpg) (http://s1134.photobucket.com/user/sammconn/media/Cabin/chimney/IMG_0404.jpg.html)

At this point, I'm just about 3 feet out of the roof opening, still not high enough for total height, but time to add the roof trim.

(http://i1134.photobucket.com/albums/m605/sammconn/Cabin/chimney/IMG_0405.jpg) (http://s1134.photobucket.com/user/sammconn/media/Cabin/chimney/IMG_0405.jpg.html)

One more section, and the chimney cap. I could have used a two foot section, but not knowing exactly how it was all going to go together, I opted for three 3 foot sections. And being the extra foot high ensures the wind will move the smoke off no matter what.

(http://i1134.photobucket.com/albums/m605/sammconn/Cabin/chimney/IMG_0406.jpg) (http://s1134.photobucket.com/user/sammconn/media/Cabin/chimney/IMG_0406.jpg.html)

Title: Re: My Cabin Build/Reno

With the outside done, time to move to the stove connection.
I went with the double wall stuff, just to keep things easy. It actually allows for half the clearance, but I wanted simple and no worries for a lot of years.
So, from the chimney is a 3 foot telescoping double wall pipe, which with the 3 feet 2 inches I am using is more like a quad wall. It is a 7" outlet on the stove, so at the chimney side of the elbow, a 7-6 reducer mates it all up.

(http://i1134.photobucket.com/albums/m605/sammconn/Cabin/chimney/IMG_0441.jpg) (http://s1134.photobucket.com/user/sammconn/media/Cabin/chimney/IMG_0441.jpg.html)

Apparently I was in deep thought lining it all up when mama snapped this one.
And with that, the new and healthy chimney was ready for winter.

So with the big stuff out of the way, it was time to upgrade the shed.
Out with the old, using logs for rollers, and towing with the quad and winch.

(http://i1134.photobucket.com/albums/m605/sammconn/Cabin/sheds/IMG_0132.jpg) (http://s1134.photobucket.com/user/sammconn/media/Cabin/sheds/IMG_0132.jpg.html)

And down to its summer home near the shoreline.

Four feet of door hung. I went 5 1/2 feet on the door opening. Couple reasons, for access for things like quad with blade, and if for some reason a snowmobile needed work that couldn't wait.
Never mentioned, its 12 X 16, so not really a small shed, especially at a cabin.

So with the shed serviceable, time for wood shed redo.

Now being frugal, and without a hardware store, here are some more of the beams the boat tugged across.
As well, the old deck boards that were not shot, were re-purposed here.
The start of the floor.

So, it's just a wood shed, keep the firewood dry, so that which was salvageable was reused again.

On with more roof...I'm really getting tire of roofing by this point!

So tired, it was skipped...
I ran out of rolled roofing, and had to use 3 tab on this as well. It's too low slope for 3 tab, and does leak ever so slightly in the real heavy rains. I should fix this, but as of yet still have not.

Siding going on. did both the shed and wood shed at the same time.
Got a bit of a bow in the middle, stupid recycled parts, played optical illusion on me, until this piece of siding...

At the back of the shed, the generator gets it's own little garage.
When its 30 below and colder, I cover most of the opening to keep the little heat in that the generator produces.

On the left near the lake, sits the shed, now filled to the roof, and piled high around.

The summer of 2013 was bad for forest fires for us. These were taken some time between the cabin roof and siding.
Sorry this one is crappy, from the boat, as I knew this one was too close to town.
I was high-balling it to get my fire gear, expecting the worst. It was a controlled back burn that went bad.
Noticed from the roof, and went oh no, and was gone.

My deputy chief and I, went for a ride to look at where the fires were. We are firefighters for work, but work with the local FD and EMO as required and requested.
Apparently once they lost control of the back burn, there were 12 bombers and at least 10 choppers immediately redirected to protect the town. They were already in the area fighting the other out of control parts of the fire, so it was a quick response.
We took our drive, to be rained upon, all kinds of soot, immediately pulled from the air.
One of the most surreal and ominous moments of my life, as the air changed.

On the morning of September 1st, I decided enough of this work thing, and went to cut some trail.
The Island I'm on is in the area of one by four miles. My buddy has a cabin on the far side from me, already connected by a trail about 5-600 yards away from my place. We've said we need to get this trail in, for various reasons, so off I went to clear some bush. Now, about 300 yards from my place is a nice stand of birch, my favorite fire wood, so off I struck to the edge of the birch stand to start working back to the cabin.
Everything was going well, had about 30 yards cleared to the ground, working on the bigger stuff so I could start dragging it back with the quad. Well, it all went south for me, was in a willow bush, working a larger fallen tree, when I back barred a willow.
Smack, I though crap, that willow got me good!
Then I looked down and saw the leg of my sweats torn to shreds...
Oh No!, Yup, got me good, the chainsaw did.
So, the EMT in me kicks in, not bleeding, good...
Where the heck is the cabin, rut-row...
I'm not lost, just a fair jaunt through thick brush, with a heck of a hole in my knee, which I'm still unsure how useable it is.

Here's what was left of the sweats...

(http://i1134.photobucket.com/albums/m605/sammconn/Cabin/chainsaw/P1070218.jpg) (http://s1134.photobucket.com/user/sammconn/media/Cabin/chainsaw/P1070218.jpg.html)

I'll stop the story here for the night.

Yall want to see the pictures?
Not all that gory, big ole hole in a knee, not really any blood, and it all turns out good.

I can carry on without these ones, maybe a medical corner post?
Lemme know how to proceed. ::)

It was awesome, and sucked all at once.
I spent the better part of a month out there to get it all looked after.
Some of the other cabin folks, were down right shocked their first trips out, and I'd already been there three weeks.

I'm the guy they ask if its time, spring and winter, and beat most out by a couple weeks on each end.

Great work and it really brings back memories when I did my garage, the changed the slope on the front of the house. ( little shallow on the pitch near the center, but I have planes for that)

Funny I had just emailed my dr about getting my ankles going when I saw what you did.

Lots of work there. Is the foundation attached or does the house float on all the wood stacks?

So now you've seen the before and after.

Here's the story...

As part of the Reserves, the Rangers send in a shooting team each year to compete at the Canadian Armed Forces Small Arms Concentration, (CAFSAC).
Each of the three Companies of our group hold annually a qualifier shoot to select the team, divided an a per capita basis. Being that I am from the Manitoba Company, with the smaller numbers than the BC Company, we only hold three spots. I've been doing this for the past 8-9 years now, and am called on to coach the new shooters, and if I want to go, I am basically in. To play fair, I do shoot the final day of camp to 'earn' my spot. I'm not tootin my horn totally, as those who shoot lots understand, basic marksmanship principles applied properly will produce at and above the average results.

So back to the story. I cut my knee up on 1 September, and was supposed to be on a plane to Ottawa, Ontario on 6 September. In the boat on the way to the hospital, my wife looks at me and says well I guess you're not going now huh? At the time it hadn't really crossed my mind...oh no. I didn't respond, just shrugged my shoulders. We got to the marina, and she wouldn't let me drive the truck, although she wouldn't drive the boat. I need to fix this problem, one day she may need to drive the boat.

So being a small town, we had called the hospital to let them know we were coming. I thought this would get the Doctor in there if he was not already there.
Advised of chainsaw wound, no severe bleed yet, all the EMT training coming out of me to the nurse on duty. We get to the hospital, and I'm met at the door with a wheelchair, the nurse goes 'You the chainsaw guy? I say yeah. she goes well you don't need this. I say, yeah I thought I was pretty clear when I called."

So, being a small town, yeah same start again, and lots of no shows to the hospital for appointments, they haven't called for doc yet...
I'm not in a good mood, have a nasty gash is my knee, and now wished I had a large bore suture kit at the cabin to save this grief.

They finally call doc in, and he wants to freeze it, I'm ok with it due to size, normally don't bother, hate when the freezing comes out. Yeah I do this a bit.

He freezes it 'all' up and starts sewing.
somewhere near the middle three stitches its not froze at all on one side, and I must have twitched a bit, not major but he asked if I wanted more. I said no, unless that was too much twitch, to which he said no but if you want more let me know. Well that was almost the end of what was froze, the last two had a bit. All I thought was I let him tear up the inside of this knee for nothing.

All the while I was taking pictures, and the last one above, was when I realized I could still build the new stairs for the decks!
It wasn't all a loss.

To be continued...

Really great from start to finish. You did some great work! I shuddered when I saw your chimney after having read about how hot you got the stove before. Glad that creosote didn't go off! I love all of it. You must really be enjoying it. You don't live there year round right? I always wonder about folks in those areas when dealing with ice-in (before it's safe to be on) and ice out once it's no longer safe to be on it. Beautiful spot for sure!

If I can throw something out for the carpenter ants....Fipronil is the active ingredient in good ant control chems. You can buy a decent jug of it online for cheap (I forget now how much but considering it only takes like a 1/2 Oz or something per gallon of water it's cheaper than using store bought stuff which typically doesn't work as well). Carpenter ants (from what our pest control guy told me before I bought my own stuff) leave the nest every day so you spray the stuff on all the exposed walls around your house (in your case all over the beams) so they have to walk through it. They will die (if you find them in your house leave the bodies because other ants will bring them back to the nest to canibalize and more will die). I spray around my whole house in the spring and have no issues anymore (I did have a threshold eaten almost completely away before which is why I happened to learn all this stuff!). Just as an aside Fipronil is also the active ingredient in Frontline so you can make your own if you've a mind to. Sorry for the thread drift!

Wilbur, thanks for the info. Not really off the topic, I may be Venturing there on my own.

We don't 'live here' year round. Spend probably 40-50% of our time here all tolled.
Connie is here all of the summer and were out every chance we can be.
We chomp at the bit for freeze up and break up each year. Generally 2-4 weeks.

I plan one year to hang out for break up. Will bring my zodiac out towards the end of the winter season. It could be really something to see, or may be boring as all get out.

"tis but a scratch"....."come back and fight like a man"

LOL, I feel your pain.  I was demonstrating to my girls how to chop firewood while we were camping last year and only had my little Collins axe, which is about a 3/4 axe and not long enough to safely use standing because of the arc of swing.  Got tired of being on my knees on the ground and placed the logs on a stump.  Right after telling them to keep a wide spread, I hit the log and went right through it and the little axe hit me right in the shinn.  I knew what I had done but refused to stop and inspect it and kept on cutting.  When I was done, my wife remarked that my entire jeans leg was soaked in blood and the jeans had a nice hole in them.  So much for the demonstration.....

So, as our dear friend Paul Harvey would come back after commercial,
And now for the rest of the story...

Once I'm all sewn up, the put on the uber sticky, probably stick to monkey snot, bandage to hold the dressings and stuff on my knee. They tell me the normal keep it dry for 72 hours, and come back then for a dressing change and inspection.

Off we strike back to the cabin. My plans for the morning were to cut trail, then after lunch crawl underneath to check out the floor insulation, and repair the one run that had housed a spruce martin last winter. Clearly this would not work now, so plan B it was. I still needed to build new stairs for the decks, well I can do that with this little scrape.

So into the lumber pile, which at this point had diminished to almost nothing, dig out the 2 X 12's and start cutting stringers. I learned long ago, do not re-use a staircase if ANYTHING has been changed. The old ones sufficed for the temporary, but were too short, way too short, and a foot too short once it was all said and done. There is an art to staircase building, and I am not that artist, I can get them done, but it takes two or three layouts before I'm happy.

So at some point in the building mama come out and snaps a few pictures, and asks again, 'So what's this mean for CAFSAC?' I smiled, said well it isn't completely buggered, I can bend it, and it's the knee that doesn't matter! Right handed shot fires kneeling position with left knee up! So fast forward to 6 September, I'm in Ottawa, meeting up with the team and the OC. Tell him of my predicament, he is naturally concerned, I think on two fronts. 1 - can this guy function with one leg, and 2 - now I'm responsible for the gimp.
The team captain, by default has been my buddy Tom for the past forever, and he was pulled aside and asked these questions. Tom just told him, if he's here, he's good to go, and he'll shoot fine, probably won't effect anything, no running in practice, until ranking comes in, and then he'll just deal with it. SO, practice was rude, 6 days with stitches penetrating an inch or better, tying everything back together sucks. My knee could bend about 30 degrees before it felt like it was going to explode, Ibuprophen and ice was my best friend to keep the swelling at bay.

Practice is coming to an end, now time to rank into the four man teams, GAME ON! Now I'm at about day 12ish, it's still rude and doesn't bend. And we're doing all the rundowns and movement stuff. Made the first day ok, then it was time for the 500M match. I looked at the RSO and explained my position, told him I'm going for it, but if something isn't right be ready for me to drop off. More an FYI for him, as they don't like loaded guns behind 75 guys for some reason... I ran it like a champ, and placed #2 on the team at the end of it all.

The completion begins, and we do it all over again...so at day 21 we're back to the 500M rundown match, formed up in out four shooting relays, relay three is up first, I'm in relay one, and Dave in relay two says to one of his guys 'good luck medic'. I look Dave straight in the eyes, and ask him 'Can Jeremy get these out today?'. He says he'll ask, but doesn't know if he'll have his stuff. My response was 'What medic wouldn't have their stuff'. So we shoot the match, and it all wraps up, I did good, but was it enough? Got to wait for the results to be posted...

Well it was enough, by a good margin too, I'm elated, and want these things out. For whatever reason, I can pull together a 500M rundown match, but struggle mid pack at 200M and in...

Jeremy drops by later that evening with his tools, and we begin the surgery. Remember, these have been in for 20 days now, doc wanted 15-18 but I wasn't taking any chances of blowing it open again before the running was done. So with one really swollen, red, irritated knee group we began.
He dug and probed, and one by one out they came. And by dug, I mean he had the forceps and scalpel rooting around almost 1/4 inch down in some of them.

Out the all came, and for the first time in three weeks I was able to stretch my legs! Yes, I ran the whole competition without a stretch. Right or wrong, my logic was if I stretch the good one, I'll really screw up the bad one, so it will keep me in check. So the OC's fears were for not, he was really impressed how one broken down, beat up, out of shape redneck could giver when needed.

And now you know, the rest of the story...

So, story is up, here's a few random pics of the ordeal.

Some serious needle and thread...
I guess it was a pretty serious flesh wound, 3 1/2" long, 1" deep, 3/8" wide.

So we're at the end of September, time to clean up my disaster zone for winter.
Everything and anything that could be burned was hauled and loaded into the shed, until it was filled to the rafters. (poor choice on my part) I had the shed up on logs so it couldn't freeze down to the ground, and 'would roll right out' when I hooked on to it later on.

Here everything is being moved down there, and a bit of brushing has been done.

(http://i1134.photobucket.com/albums/m605/sammconn/Cabin/yard%20pics/P1060371.jpg) (http://s1134.photobucket.com/user/sammconn/media/Cabin/yard%20pics/P1060371.jpg.html)

And it wasn't an entire summer of work, slipped in a bit of tube time with the family and some friends.

I think this was somewhere before the chainsaw escapades, but it'll go in here now. We basically live out here if we're not at work, so the sunroom needed a facelift too.

(http://i1134.photobucket.com/albums/m605/sammconn/Cabin/gazebo/P1060435.jpg) (http://s1134.photobucket.com/user/sammconn/media/Cabin/gazebo/P1060435.jpg.html)

A bit of re-framing to widen the windows and add a bit more structure.

And then, (a guy left town with all kind of drywall and insulation. I bought it all) why not insulate and make it nice to BBQ at -40.

And then, let's pretty it up some. I'm cheap, I buy fence boards, cheapest cedar I can buy.

If the insurance company thought the chimney was uninsurable, I wonder how they feel about the indoor BBQ with wood walls and ceiling...

Darn nice work. I built a fort for my kids from fencing, stuff is great! Stores hate me though as I dig through whole pallet for 50 or so boards.

Finally I see you using insulation! To bad you didn't use a layer on the outside when wrapping it.

I hate getting stitches out, last ones were on both hands. (carpel tunnel)

How do you like your Zodiac? I have been looking at some similar for fishing and such around 10ft. Deciding on .9mm or 1.2mm and solid or air floors.

With that size I can half deflate and make shelf to carry in the top half of my shell. Nice 40+ trolling motor and 2 nice AGMs and I am good for days.

JR, I'm the same, I think up until I got the cedar for the new outhouse, I was one good board for every four I grabbed. It's really bad when you're cheap and fussy huh?

I had considered upping the insulation, but didn't want to go so far as to have to replace windows. And the wood stove is a monster, so a bit of thermal leakage is welcome. Add to it that I enjoy cutting wood for some reason, so I don't really care if I need an extra half cord or whatever the difference would be.

As for the stitches, I just hate them while they're in. I'm one of the weirdo's that tends to just ignore pain, or not even fell most things. Its a blessing and curse all at once. The ones from the knee, could not wait, worst spot I've ever needed sewn up.

Mike, quite literally a smoke house in the winter. All of the screens get covered in 6 mil poly doubled up. The smoke builds its way down, and I need to open the doors.

Well, lets get this show back on the road.
Somewhere soon after here we started to freeze up. While waiting on the ice I began the construction of the new cabinets.

I'm at a loss where the rest are, but here is one towards the end of the build.

(http://i1134.photobucket.com/albums/m605/sammconn/Cabin/cabinets/IMG_0811.jpg) (http://s1134.photobucket.com/user/sammconn/media/Cabin/cabinets/IMG_0811.jpg.html)

With the cabinets built and I don't remember if finished, the ice arrived.

So back to work I was.
First up was addressing if there were ants in the north wall, that was already sided when I found them out front.
So I started in the bedroom, gutting out the old cupboards and paneling.

(http://i1134.photobucket.com/albums/m605/sammconn/Cabin/Drywall/P1070323.jpg) (http://s1134.photobucket.com/user/sammconn/media/Cabin/Drywall/P1070323.jpg.html)

Then with no ants found, up went the drywall.

(http://i1134.photobucket.com/albums/m605/sammconn/Cabin/Drywall/P1070327.jpg) (http://s1134.photobucket.com/user/sammconn/media/Cabin/Drywall/P1070327.jpg.html)

And into the kitchen.

(http://i1134.photobucket.com/albums/m605/sammconn/Cabin/Drywall/P1070329.jpg) (http://s1134.photobucket.com/user/sammconn/media/Cabin/Drywall/P1070329.jpg.html)

It was quite a chore sneaking 1/2" drywall through where 1/4" paneling came from. Had to unhook the wall and slide it out.

(http://i1134.photobucket.com/albums/m605/sammconn/Cabin/Drywall/P1070346.jpg) (http://s1134.photobucket.com/user/sammconn/media/Cabin/Drywall/P1070346.jpg.html)

At this point we stopped and put things back to a functional state.

We are now near the end of March, mama is on a school trip to Australia, so now was my time to pounce and surprise her with the new kitchen. I took a few days off, and me and the hounds spent some chaotic time to pull a whirlwind reno.
Into the kitchen with a fury.

(http://i1134.photobucket.com/albums/m605/sammconn/Cabin/Drywall/IMG_9045.jpg) (http://s1134.photobucket.com/user/sammconn/media/Cabin/Drywall/IMG_9045.jpg.html)

Extended the bedroom a few inches.

Then it was time to close it all up and mud.

The sharing is part of what this is about. Everyone has questions about stuff, hopefully it helps someone out. Sometime seeing is half the battle.
Some of this stuff has been new to me, my friend Google sent me to some places for info.
So now maybe here is some for the rest.

I've still got a long way to go, and will keep it going as time permits.
Cheers!

Now some not so much cabin reno, we have some pretty hearty birds that winter with us.
We know them as Whiskey Jacks, I believe the are part of the Jay family. They will take just about anything that is food.

Loading up the feeder with some old bread.

And the feeding frenzy that ensues...

And then we had some four legged visitors.
There were several herds, probably totaling 2-300 caribou.
They normally don't frequent the lake, but every so often they do swing over it on their migrations.

We then jumped on the skidoo, as mama has never seen them alive! LOL.
Pics are blurry, but can't help it at 30 MPH bouncing across the ice.

So with winter 2014 almost in the books, we spent as long as possible and then gave up for the thaw.

When break up hit, it was time for a new dock. the old one, seen here, was too narrow (5 feet) and the floats were shot.

(http://i1134.photobucket.com/albums/m605/sammconn/Cabin/Dock/P1060426.jpg) (http://s1134.photobucket.com/user/sammconn/media/Cabin/Dock/P1060426.jpg.html)

So, a couple loads of supplies from the city, and we're under construction.
The new sections are 8' X 22'ish, reclaimed lightweight roofing trusses.

(http://i1134.photobucket.com/albums/m605/sammconn/Cabin/Dock/IMG_0846.jpg) (http://s1134.photobucket.com/user/sammconn/media/Cabin/Dock/IMG_0846.jpg.html)

The floats, in the plywood boxes on the far section, are filled with blue Styrofoam SM. (+/- 1800 pound floatation per)

(http://i1134.photobucket.com/albums/m605/sammconn/Cabin/Dock/IMG_0869.jpg) (http://s1134.photobucket.com/user/sammconn/media/Cabin/Dock/IMG_0869.jpg.html)

I elected for 'wheels' on the dock to aid in installation and removal from the water when it does come back.

(http://i1134.photobucket.com/albums/m605/sammconn/Cabin/Dock/IMG_0870.jpg) (http://s1134.photobucket.com/user/sammconn/media/Cabin/Dock/IMG_0870.jpg.html)

And here they are all joined up, now it looks size large.

(http://i1134.photobucket.com/albums/m605/sammconn/Cabin/Dock/IMG_0874.jpg) (http://s1134.photobucket.com/user/sammconn/media/Cabin/Dock/IMG_0874.jpg.html)

With a new day calling, on to the decking of the dock.

And all decked out and trimmed.

So with the new dock anchored on the crib, it was time for an overhaul of that pieced together ball of crap.

My plan for the summer of 2014 was to actually enjoy it, and as such the dock was my only 'planned' job.
I almost forgot to fish most of the summer of '13, and that was NOT happening again.
So for the most part, I relaxed and enjoyed the summer, and then we decided to put in a new fire pit.

Don't ever let anyone tell you a blade on a quad can't move dirt.
Now I made the plow, and I strap it so it can't tip out at times too, so at some point 'they' will be right, but for now...

(http://i1134.photobucket.com/albums/m605/sammconn/Cabin/Fire%20Pit/P1080982.jpg) (http://s1134.photobucket.com/user/sammconn/media/Cabin/Fire%20Pit/P1080982.jpg.html)

Not the most level block job, but sand/gravel is scarce, so I said to heck with it.

(http://i1134.photobucket.com/albums/m605/sammconn/Cabin/Fire%20Pit/P1080983.jpg) (http://s1134.photobucket.com/user/sammconn/media/Cabin/Fire%20Pit/P1080983.jpg.html)

My Mom and Dad were up for a visit, and got put to work a bit.
Yes, that poor Komatik even is used in the summer.

(http://i1134.photobucket.com/albums/m605/sammconn/Cabin/Fire%20Pit/P1080984.jpg) (http://s1134.photobucket.com/user/sammconn/media/Cabin/Fire%20Pit/P1080984.jpg.html)

And done!

(http://i1134.photobucket.com/albums/m605/sammconn/Cabin/Fire%20Pit/P1080987.jpg) (http://s1134.photobucket.com/user/sammconn/media/Cabin/Fire%20Pit/P1080987.jpg.html)

If it weren't for one stone under the high block it wouldn't have been too bad, it was huge, and wouldn't budge.

We had to jack the roof on the cabin also this summer, and with ma and pa there what better time, more eyes and ears.

I don't have any pictures of this for some reason.

When the original owner built the place, he also built the rafters.
But instead of diagonal bracing like most have he only put in verticals.
So fast forward some years, and the roof load caused the rafters and ceiling to sag.

So with not much of a plan in place, other than I was going to jack the ceiling and glue/screw plywood gussets to the rafters we began. I crawled into the attic and measured the important dimensions for the plywood gussets.
then four sheets of 1/2" plywood were cut into eight wedges about 3 foot to one foot taper.

I have four jack stands for leveling mobile homes, so they became the lifting fixture.
Remember the 2 X 6 beams, well two of them 16 feet long became the thrust plate on the ceiling.
add a 4 X 4 post from the jack to the beam, and what could go wrong?

So with the lifting plan in place and all clamped and screwed together strategically placed on the floor beams, and the rafter verticals we tightened up the jack screws. The plan was to do a couple turns on each, go outside look at the roofline, repeat.

After a few round of this insanity, I stayed outside, and relayed info to my dad inside running the jacks.
We lifted a little over four inches, and dad said it was getting tough. Not wanting to take the roof off the walls, I called it there, and headed into the attic. It was 10 am, already 85* outside, and I don't even want to guess at the attic temp.
About half way through, dad asked you coming out to take a break, Um NO, if I come out I'm done. So he kept bringing the plywood wedges, and a bottle of water or Gatorade each trip.

So with all eight in place, I quickly scurried out and jumped in the lake. WOW was it cold! I guess I was just that overheated, but it was great.

Once I dried up, we took some more measurements, and lowered the jacks. The sag back was less than 1/2", so success!
The roof still wasn't perfect, but it was now solid not springy, and the ceiling looked like a ceiling again.

I think the pucker factor had something to do with the lack of camera now that I think about it.

More to come once I find the newer pictures!

I don't exactly remember, I think it was to do with interlocking bits that meant the straight stack.
I'm going to have to look now though.

Nothing better than sitting near some water enjoying a beverage with a fire. Good work man! I am sure you will have many enjoyable nights there!

Of course now if you're like me your eyes will be drawn to the straight line in the block edges haha. Just pop another wobblypop and enjoy the fire.  ;D

I looks like a common roman stack like what I've got. they usually have a ridge in the tops of the block and then a cap set that fits over the top, so there is no need to stagger?

Sam, I lost track for a while but glad I got caught up.  Really making good progress.  Fire pits are not an option where you are.  I guess you can have a fire almost 9 months a year!

Keep the updates coming

I like the fire pit.

That is a big dock. Is there a yard just for making docks on the island? Does the wood get replaced every few years or is the water cold enough to keep it?

Speaking of jacking up a ceiling, I know the feeling!!

JR, the 'yard' as it appeared is the marina area. Built on the parking lot so to speak.
I actually had to build another section this year. The water was very low, about a foot deep at the end vice the normal six to seven of normal. By the time I had it made we had come back up, and I didn't hook it on. Would have upped the sketch factor considerably going another 20 feet, but I have it now if need be. A lot of the other guys were disconnecting and dragging out, so the extra I have paid off.

Nate, I'm just back now. Was a great couple weeks, way too hot for my liking, high 80's and better with 600% humidity. Absolutely gross for me, but just soldiered on through it.
I did well, placed third overall in my class. We only shoot against the other Rangers, as the bolt guns and iron sights at up to 500m are a a little disadvantage.

Now I just need to figure out how to aim a little smaller to top out. The fella that won, again, is one heck of a shot. He's beatable, but man was he on his game this year. I had a blow out match which should have hurt me more than it did, but that's shooting.

Got it. Build on their site and tow it over?

Got my little 13ft registered today and want to try it out before it gets to cold.
Title: Re: My Cabin Build/Reno
Post by: Sammconn on September 25, 2015, 08:41:12 AM
That's correct. I was able to squeeze in the water side to build. Problem was, I had to be done before we put the marina docks in, beat them by a few days, so I was happy to not be in the way...lol.
The wood actually holds up well with a bit of maintenance.
I used treated lumber, and it has taken until now for it to 'wear' enough to need a retreat.
Been so busy, and fighting rain every couple days, that I have not put on the Thompsons Water seal I have for it.
I expect with a little upkeep, the dock will outlast my time up north. (We're not sure on plans, but could stick out another 15 years or so)
Title: Re: My Cabin Build/Reno

I meant the wood around the foam. I take it that is not a block of foam surrounded by wood, it is just a mold.
Title: Re: My Cabin Build/Reno
Post by: Sammconn on September 25, 2015, 02:00:29 PM
Ah, gotcha.
The plywood, 'should' last quite a while.
The foam is 3" styrofoam SM, the wood just holds it in.
The wood is held in by an angle iron frame.
The old dock, was the original, circa 1995-ish, and was still original.
I think I may need to find some steel banding at some point, but it should also be GTG.

And the first of the two beams up that pressed against the roof.

That basically wrapped up the summer projects, and with winter underway, we talked ourselves into getting a sauna.
Getting being me building...

So here's a 12 x 8 sauna being delivered...

I had the floor joist material already out there, left overs from the dock, this is everything else.

Spring started to roll in, and one weekend it was 'nice' enough to begin. Think it was low 20's.

(http://i1134.photobucket.com/albums/m605/sammconn/sauna/P1110269.jpg) (http://s1134.photobucket.com/user/sammconn/media/sauna/P1110269.jpg.html)

Floor is insulated with 4" Styrofoam, held in with cleats underneath.

In went the insulation, and now the frugal me is T&G'ing cedar fence boards.

I couldn't get the legit foil/craft paper in time, so I made my own. It is used for vapor barrier in saunas, as poly will break down from the heat. I wish I had got the real stuff, this way was a major pain in the butt.

It's presently sporting my 10 man arctic tent stove, which is way overkill for this small space.
The sauna room is in the area of 7' wide by 8' long.
2 x 6 construction, and well insulated. I'd really hate to put a real fire to the stove for fear of how hot it would end up. In perspective, the 10 man is a 15' pentagonal shape, two layers of fabric separated by an air space of a couple inches. 25-30,000 BTU will effectively heat it at -20. This stove does a bit North of that, kept well fired it will cook you out at -40.

Having said that, there has been use of it with a few little scraps, and yeah it feels good.
I'm going to like it a lot. Well we are I suppose.

I have in the plans to build a suitably sized stove, with rocks and the whole bit.
It might take second place to the rear bumper though, time will tell.

I have been cutting down Cedars on the farm

Have thousands of them

Looked at this cheapo chain saw guide bar/mill thing

If I can cut some of them into 6 X 6 posts. I might be able to rip them as well. Get myself some cheapo lumber. Def would do a room or building or something with those...as they have that amazing aroma

That looks really great Sam! I am sure you will enjoy that in the winters!

Don can you pull them out of the ground with Big Red? Save you having to grind stumps if you're looking to create a hay field or farm land.

and

Good idea I might add!

The chainsaw mill and a planer would do wonders for useable cedar.
Heck depending on usage, the rough cut would be good as well!

So since I'm going to have to find some other sauna pictures, I'll move onto the next project.
The old privy was full, so time for a new one.
Thanks to my island neighbor, who has a Kubota 25DX out there the hole was easy as pie!
It dug the advertised 6 foot, and I squeaked a bit more than that.
New hole contains this culvert, 3 foot diameter, 8 feet and change long/deep.

Then, it was time to haul the supplies over.
I wish the water was high, everything is built to drive my stuff on and off, so being low, I had to carry the wood.

A couple years back, a buddy left town, and I happened onto a bunch of R-20 insulation, so 2x6 construction continues even for the privy!

Now, somewhere sometime I read to do a large and small vent to enhance airflow.
Right wrong or otherwise I did this.

(http://i1134.photobucket.com/albums/m605/sammconn/Cabin/outhouse/84D6E33D-D60D-49B2-A70D-EF39B5886A7E.jpg) (http://s1134.photobucket.com/user/sammconn/media/Cabin/outhouse/84D6E33D-D60D-49B2-A70D-EF39B5886A7E.jpg.html)

Yes, hack a big ole hole in a brand new roof.
The theory is the small pipe will create a downward supply of fresh air to the 'tank', and the large will exhaust it.
I'm going to be plugging (temporarily in any case) the small one now.
It may have just been a bad wind, but last weekend, it was not the nice cedar fresh it should have been inside.

Vent pipes covered in, and hole covered to eliminate the need for retrieval of tools etc.

(http://i1134.photobucket.com/albums/m605/sammconn/Cabin/outhouse/IMG_1716.jpg) (http://s1134.photobucket.com/user/sammconn/media/Cabin/outhouse/IMG_1716.jpg.html)

And to cover the vents, I'm creating a mess, er masterpiece, er well...

(http://i1134.photobucket.com/albums/m605/sammconn/Cabin/outhouse/IMG_1718.jpg) (http://s1134.photobucket.com/user/sammconn/media/Cabin/outhouse/IMG_1718.jpg.html)

Four such panels, then tapered and fit to the roof. Screen inside to keep the critters out.
Funny can't find this picture either...
It does not have the matching lid on it yet, just a piece of plywood in the interim.

Then on to finishing inside.

(http://i1134.photobucket.com/albums/m605/sammconn/Cabin/outhouse/IMG_1720.jpg) (http://s1134.photobucket.com/user/sammconn/media/Cabin/outhouse/IMG_1720.jpg.html)

T&G cedar again, and the nice winter warm Styro seat.

(http://i1134.photobucket.com/albums/m605/sammconn/Cabin/outhouse/IMG_1722.jpg) (http://s1134.photobucket.com/user/sammconn/media/Cabin/outhouse/IMG_1722.jpg.html)

The old door from the other house was still functional, and once this point was reached, was transferred to the new privy, officially marking the opening of the new thinking spot.

Since we spend all of our free time here, and winter is dark from 4pm to 10am near the peak, lights are also needed.
I did not come up with this design, it was in the old privy, but it was upgraded to cedar to trim out and provide light.
The outdoor light switch turns on one deck light, Christmas lights if connected, and the outhouse lights.

(http://i1134.photobucket.com/albums/m605/sammconn/Cabin/outhouse/IMG_1729.jpg) (http://s1134.photobucket.com/user/sammconn/media/Cabin/outhouse/IMG_1729.jpg.html)

The dado is cut to hold the wiring, then holes carefully measured and drilled, lights inserted, trim nailed up, and voila!

Well, this may be it for the summer.  :(

Water temperature is down to 41-43 depending on where in the lake.
Air temps have been down in the teens.
'Landing Lake' our float plane lake froze over two nights ago. It's not deep, but all the puddles and swamps are frozen or showing signs.
Cabin was a brisk 25 when we got here this aft.

Next weekend we are out for a wedding, and I suspect by Halloween weekend we may have ice on the lake. Time will tell, Halloween weekend I out target date ever year, everyone thinks we're nuts, icy water and all, but it's out quiet spot.

Now to go take some pics to finish this up.

Ok, got driven out by wind this morning. 25-30 mph gusting to 45. In a bad direction to boot. So much for pulling dock today. It's supposed to pick up and change to an even worse direction for getting home.

So I snapped a few pics to finish up.

Here is the privy, 99% complete. I'm probably going to get stupid and cut mini shakes and get all creative to cap the vent.

There is a propane heater installed, well almost. Need to put in the sheet metal heat shield first then it's GTG. I'm afraid how hot it ma end up. At -10 the pilot light was sufficient in the old one. This one is far tighter and much better insulated.

Winter is knocking at our door. Yes there's a few inches of snow, but it was melting today.
Made a trip out with a buddy to knock off some much needed firewood.
Couple hours on my old trusty Stihl 025, and a half cord or so bucked and stacked for pick up with the skidoo.
Finally have a healthy dog again, so down came the ramps at the cabin and house as well.

I usually give a week after Ice-up.
Then I'll gingerly venture out with a cordless drill and start checking.
I'll continue as long as I keep over 4" of ice.
At the 6-7" point, the skidoo follows a few hundred yards back.
At 6-7" all the way I say I'm good to go.

Pre-detonation.
Oh yeah. 6 pounds of Tannerite securely nestled inside.
Firing point about 300ish yards.

Great fun was had.

So, it's been a while, but as eluded to on one of big D's posts I'm installing a 1 kW solar setup at the cabin.
Now just thinking out loud I may do a separate thread on he total re-do of my set up.

Thoughts?

In the mean time here is the beginning.
Title: Re: My Cabin Build/Reno
Post by: Sammconn on October 12, 2016, 12:12:15 PM
I began by getting the neighbors tractor to aid in trenching.

Awoke to this...

(http://i1134.photobucket.com/albums/m605/sammconn/Cabin/solar/A57B88F2-63BB-43F3-895A-F83AD9C6AC5C.jpg) (http://s1134.photobucket.com/user/sammconn/media/Cabin/solar/A57B88F2-63BB-43F3-895A-F83AD9C6AC5C.jpg.html)

Well frost is upon us and if I wanted the cables buried, there was no time to waste.
So I pressed on and dug the trench and laid in the cables.
In the future is running water, so I put in a 14/3 to run the pump. It gets me that much closer to shore, and with a trench in it made sense to get that far.
The solar panel cable is either #2 or 4 awg. It is overkill for what I'm running but it was originally intended for electrifying my shop at the farm I just sold, so I owned it, and have repurposed it now.
Now with this size I didn't even consider the voltage drop calculations. My array is located 130'+/- from the cabin, and if I needed cable would have done this calculation.

Needless to say it has been a mucky mess.
This resulted in a lack of pics on my part.

So here is the trench lookin back to the casa.

(http://i1134.photobucket.com/albums/m605/sammconn/Cabin/solar/619CBDC6-8E1C-4D12-911B-6226D81BB28D.jpg) (http://s1134.photobucket.com/user/sammconn/media/Cabin/solar/619CBDC6-8E1C-4D12-911B-6226D81BB28D.jpg.html)

The stand for the panels is mostly complete, but is sure bigger than I expected.

(http://i1134.photobucket.com/albums/m605/sammconn/Cabin/solar/529C7C53-6D4B-4B8A-8100-1026FDDD02F5.jpg) (http://s1134.photobucket.com/user/sammconn/media/Cabin/solar/529C7C53-6D4B-4B8A-8100-1026FDDD02F5.jpg.html)

The end size will be 1.7 meters by 4 meters, which threw me for a loop too, as I'm not very metric with dimensions. This is approximately 13 feet wide and 5 high of panel.

Here are the two cables coming out of the trench at the base. I need to get them into a junction box once I get back out there.

(http://i1134.photobucket.com/albums/m605/sammconn/Cabin/solar/BE44F87B-9344-46DB-85D0-FE2314AE4272.jpg) (http://s1134.photobucket.com/user/sammconn/media/Cabin/solar/BE44F87B-9344-46DB-85D0-FE2314AE4272.jpg.html)

These were taken on day two of the install, it was a good thing I pushed on day one, as we had another 8" of snow fall overnight, and would have made backfilling even more of a mess.

Cool, where did you buy the system from & any details you can give us on it?
Title: Re: My Cabin Build/Reno
Post by: Sammconn on October 12, 2016, 01:49:40 PM
I picked it up from a solar wholesaler in Winnipeg.
Details off the top of my head are:
Panels - 4 X 265 watt
Charge controller - 50 amp MPPT

Now I need to switch over to 24 volts on my battery bank as well.
4 X Trojan T-105 6 volt batteries.

Soon to be on order just waiting on prices:
Samlex PST-3000-24 - 3000 watt pure sine wave 24 volt input inverter.
And possibly Iota DLS-27-15, or DLS-27-25 - 24vdc load carrying battery charger.
I need a 24 volt charger, just not set on the one as of today.

This 24 volt thing really turned my world upside down.
Everything in the cabin is on the 12 volt system.
I may keep some up to all of it in tact, and tie it off of 12 volts of battery.
I'm not entirely sure how this will play out.
It complicates the wiring to a large degree keeping what would then be three systems that cannot even tied together separate, so in the end I may abandon the 12 volt stuff entirely. Having said that, some key light fixtures are dual ac and dc lights, so to keep that function would be nice.
Time will tell which road I venture down, but I will do a thread on the 'complete' package.

Sounds like a good start. With you being up there where the sun does not really get up all that high. have you considered a tracking system?

Pure sine wave inverters are nice, but not needed for most things (delicate electronics)

Don't go cheap on the batteries as you will only run them down to around 50% to keep them alive for a long time and they like to freeze.

Are the panels mono or poly?

Which has me thinking out loud here

We are about prep and survival using the brain our gracious Lord has given us

You are doing "Ice Camp" while others are doing their off grid spirited stuff (Where's Norm when you need him?)

We may start up an off grid section to centralize good info like this

You and I are doing the same thing with independent sites which can self sustain. I know others are benefiting from this information, and it's fascinating to be sure!

My second solar system (DIY) has a stand alone 1500watt outlet for when the grid is down. Won't save the world but will run the fridge and charge a few batteries.

I still think for long term the forklift battery is what to look for. Sure about $1000 but a 20+ year life and all the power you ever need.

Careful of used forklift batteries or ones that have been refurbished. I dealt with these lifts in our steel shops for years. Unless it is a new or known to you piece of equipment stay away from it. Also many of them the voltage can be 36 or 48 volt (at least larger ones we used).

48 volt is the way to go from what I read. I found the guys on a couple forums to be jerks and stopped asking questions.

GC batteries are great and you can change out bad ones easy, but you need about 50 to match a lift battery.

For something totally off grid I would look at lift batteries, for a weekend here and there GC would be fine. However getting a lift battery to some places my present a challenge since you cant just cart em in.

I may just have a source of reconditioned forklift batteries.

A buddy from the Air Force uses military technology to literally shake off all internal scaling on old lift batteries. He gets the old bats for free, and like I said, he is my buddy

Junk away. I don't think it would be fair otherwise. Rolls eyes.

Right now I'm using a 60 watt to keep charge up as well as a 400 watt turbine.
So battery charge state is always good.

Lift battery would be nice, but not for my use at this time.
The ease of swapping a dead cell is more important than tanking a lift batt.
I'll do a separate thread on the 'system' as it will hold it all in one spot and may get most of the way in before its too junked up.

Good buddy to have, we used those descale reconditioned units. Two things come to mind, they didn't hold the charge as long & were only good for about a year before they were shot again. Granted we were running these a shift then charge a shift then run a shift so they were run hard.

Got the new inverter in today. Along with connection kit and remote control.

This is a serious piece of hardware, nearing 45-50 lbs I'd say.

And the connection kit. Yes I likely could have found pars cheaper, but the one stop shop for properly rated cable, that cool fuse (200 amps by the way) in that little package was just worth it.

(http://i1134.photobucket.com/albums/m605/sammconn/Cabin/solar/22CD63E1-5108-4499-8DB0-54D389CEB8E8.jpg) (http://s1134.photobucket.com/user/sammconn/media/Cabin/solar/22CD63E1-5108-4499-8DB0-54D389CEB8E8.jpg.html)

I'll use the excess cable to reconnect my batteries for 24 volts, the remote is wired, but has all kinds of info to display.
Once it's up and running I hope to figure it all out.

So, I think I have the last piece of my power puzzle.
Picked up a 25A 24 volt charger today.
It's still in the box, so I don't have any other details today.
It's supposed to be a smart charger, and based on the price I sure hope so.

With the recent warm up we've had, the ice we had forming has went away for the most part. So with the pause in winter I'm out to get a pinched nerve in my neck straightened out that I tweaked under the dash the other night. God willing, I'll get a couple days to go find a white tail before I need to go home. I'm on the massage/chiropractor treatment, and after day one things are much better.
On the white tail, I'm head hunting his year, mama says 'we really don't need any meat' so will be a different time for me. Have my camera with me and might take some video of before the shot for the first time.

Last week got it all gutted and ready to demo.
Needed it for the weekend with mama and the hounds.

This weekend mama and I removed all of the soil from the greenhouse.
It rained. And rained. And rained.
But I must move on as I have 7 more days to get back closed in.

Fascia board put up. I’ve since installed it to its final place.
Tomorrow is demo day.
We’ll see how that goes.

It’s not supposed to rain. So maybe the mud pit will dry up some.

So today it all comes down but the roof.
The roof is in good shape so it’s being saved.

New floor and walls to come with bigger footprint.
Currently about 9 x 18.
New will be 12 x 18 and fill in under the new roof.

Basically adding on but doing a demo instead of continuing the disaster.
The guy that built the place didn’t spend a dime on lumber by the looks of things

Been a busy day.
Started by popping the roof off of the walls and then making a brace to hold it all up.
There is a little bit of redneckery here, but after about five hours no movement in the sinking direction.

Ok onto today.

The day started late.
0730.

It wasn’t for lack of trying just couldn’t get the weary bone moving.
I suspect tomorrow may be worse.

Onto the new floor.
Started out by building up the three crib blocks. I remembered I had a couple railway ties under the shed...yeah why’d you leave them there dummy.
So I pulled them out and bucked them into two footers.
Had to level the middle footing some as it was leaning forward.  Stacked the random blocks in and voila.
Too danged close to worry about.
With the beam moved and all level time to build a floor.

Flew in all the bits and framed it up.
Next up was too close the bottom in.
I used pegboard. Same as rest of the cabin and the price was right.

Was a total pain on the back neck and generally everywhere.
In with the R20.
And covered with some 6 mil.
And all covered up. (https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20210609/fdaa363c327344f1b8b4517d83d1e691.jpg)
Funny how demo is so much faster.  It this is a huge step. Now it’s just the walls.

Gotta get through the cramping and I’ll be great.
Didn’t seem to stop drinking water all day but here I am forearms and quads beating me up.
I’ll live and tomorrow will be equally fun.

Sam lots of progress. You know you’re getting older when you can’t outwork the sun….

Curious on the footings. Dug out below ground , filled with gravel and then the cribbage stacked on top?  Is that for frost heaving or?

So on the footings.

I dug down to the light gray clay.
Once dry it is the equivalent to concrete. Well not quite. But close.

I backfilled with 3/4 down and Sam-I compacted.
It is going to sink no matter what I do.
The original has at least one layer pushed into the earth.

Frost line. Well depending on who you talk to in the ballpark of 10-14 feet depending on soil composition.

So this is sufficient to float the load and provide easy adjustments as it settles.
I have satellite out here and don’t have to make seasonal adjustments so it doesn’t move much.

On the Stihl, well I can’t run over it there. Lol.
Yes it was the tie cutter.

So today I pushed forward some more.

Started in the rain again.
Cutting the random bits and parts for the front wall.

Got to this point and ran out of gas...
So there went a couple hours.
Got back and got er done.
Now I’m learning that being old and tractorless means doing things in smaller chunks.
So I built this 18 feet in three chunks.
But I dropped one off the front.
I’ll measure it at some point but it’s around five feet.
Dang thing rang my bell some but my head is hard so I pulled it back up on the floor and nailed it down.

The top plate is sitting on the ladder it’s not an angle brace. Had to lift the roof 1/4” to get it in. I don’t think it has sunk I just picked a number for the wall height. West end was 1/2” higher. So there I was picking the other end up.

But in my defence 90” was easy peasy to remember...

10-14’ wow! Back in NE Indiana we made sure to dig below frost line when sitting posts. That was 3’, here in Northern Co on front range 28-30” is suitable. Nice work, looking great  :likebutton:

What's frost?
Title: Re: My Cabin Build/Reno

It’s that stuff that causes a gravel road to turn very yucky when it rains and the frost won’t let the water down so just mud.

Yup back in my other life I was charged with weight limits on roads in early spring. Loggers that had wood to get out were always mad and the school busses always wanted an exemption. Lucky part was it didn’t happen every year and we did have a formula to help know when to post roads.

Title: My Cabin Build/Reno
Post by: Sammconn on June 11, 2021, 01:17:13 PM
Hustle is part of bug free time.
And I also have a finite window to get big jobs done.

It’s now been a few days nice.
Bugs are ah coming.

So milestone event today.
End walls in and roof now back supported on the walls.

The list of things to do is still endless.
But, I will have the major work done in the timeframe I had to get it done. All the stuff will be able to go back in and then it’s on with the small stuff.

You know.
Windows.
Electrical.
Insulating.
Finishing.
Flooring.

The little stuff.

Oh yeah, I have to fill in the hole in the roof too.

So I pushed on a little farther Friday.
Went to finish the roof.
My half lap is insufficient.
As in I needed one more roll.
So I went to my black for the woodshed.
Oh my, I picked membrane not roofing...
And the store guys missed it when I left...

Now here’s where I’m stupid. (Read CDO, or for those that don’t have it OCD)
I HAVE grey roofing.
But couldn’t put a grey stipe on the roof.
Even tough looking at the ageing roofing some has turned a dark grey.

So i said to myself, self, well get black next week when we’re out.

Fast forward to 05 Saturday morning to torrential rain that woke me from the dead.

Now I’m feeling even more dumb as I go check on the roof situation.

I’m still half asleep, putting six mil poly from the roof out the windows as go figure the roof with no shingles leaks.

Thankfully the floor held water and I don’t believe it went through to the insulation.

SMH at myself ad clean up some water.

Now if only I’d put the grey on I’d be 8 feet ahead of where I am now.
I cut two four foot pieces off to cover my leaks...

So I’ve been pushing this along slowly.
The bugs are here now. So the big free window is no longer open.

Most of the electrical is roughed in.
Got the exhaust fan to wire and then one final cut over to the new stuff.

Over the weekend, started Thursday for me, rebuilt the 9 x 14 deck to 12 x 14.

The old stairs still fit, so that was a giant bonus.

Then the 100* heat hit. I think I can call that hot? Ken?

That slowed things immensely.
But I pressed on and did siding.

I got a bit woosey before the last bit went in and took a break to rest and hydrate. Too bad I fell asleep and go a tad burnt.

Installed the last of the siding and lights on the front.
Was an upgrade from one to two and HH6 needs to decide on what the four new ones will be. Until then, the mish mash of jam jar fixtures it is.

So yesterday, woke up to 34* outside.
Had to light the wood stove.
Yeah. COLD!!!

I moved on to the other deck...

At least the boss mentioned it before anything was settled.

Previously 6 x 25 as it turns out.

Demo’d down to the bones that would be the start point.
I re-used all of the lumber from the old 9x14 as well as a 12x12 mama picked up with a metal gazebo last year, so this deck really only cost me some time, screws, and 20 12 footers. So not terrible for the upgrade I suppose.

And almost done.
Ran out of “brown” screws for the brown boards.
I wish I wasn’t so CDO...

I can now get the siding on the last of it and be able to call the outside done.

Back to work today, 31* this morning.
Hope the plants made it...

This was Saturday’s project. Ripped it off too.
All done up except windows trim and figuring out door trim.
All the electrical is now in the walls where it belongs as opposed to the old surface mount of the original.
Ceiling fans, exhaust fan and a ton of outlets now. So much better.

Next up the carpet has to go in the tank is coming inside and the fuel tank coming back in. Unsure on that timeline as other than the fuel tank it isn’t urgent. I’d like to get it all done but the water tank involves removing the wall under a bedroom window, rebuilding the battery box amd reworking the solar wiring. So losing motivation on that.

Title: Re: My Cabin Build/Reno
Post by: Sammconn on August 22, 2021, 10:33:27 AM
Ok.
So the big IBC tank is coming inside the main cabin.
It is going into the room where my batteries an electrical center is.
The room is and has been too small for a bedroom and well, we don’t have a lot of guests here.

The tank will be used for the water system.
So it’s clean filtered as needed and in the winter liquid.
It will be filled from the outside tank/melted snow depending on what season.
We’re on the 10 year look ahead and living here is one of our options.

The second tank, the current one will remain outside collecting rain water.
Will put me to about 450 gallons in summer.

They are 40” wide so only time to get it in was pre windows.
In that room there is a 48” or so window that will give me the space to bring the tank inside.
Title: Re: My Cabin Build/Reno

The fuel tank.
Knew I forgot something.

Unfortunately my floor is about 4-5 feet off the ground.
I have a diesel drip furnace and the tank I was using was a 55 gallon oil drum.
I came upon a legit 250 gallon furnace oil tank over the past year.
So it will be going in the location of the drum and plumbed to the furnace.
Title: Re: My Cabin Build/Reno

Thanks Sam, good info. So the diesel drip furnace is similar to an oil waste heater in how it works I assume?

Yes I think so.
This has a “carbeurator” of sorts that provides “x ml per minute” based on the setting.
More heat more diesel turn the dial up.
The diesel flows into the fire pot and vaporizes and is burned.

I think that’s similar to the waste oil units.

Welp.
Another year, another project.
Part of my time stranded this spring will be used to do a couple projects that having the hounds around for would be tough.

First up. Get that water tank into the cabin.

To bring everyone up to speed.
It was brought into the sunroom through a rough window opening last year. Has sat in the way ever since.

As the work continum goes, work begat work.
Moving things out of the way in the sunroom followed by cedar removal. Revealing the ever sickening reddish colour of the original.

Then had to gut the old bedroom. Out with the frame all the crap under the bed. All of it.

And this is where the work conundrum begins.

You can see the two types on the left. Well not much of the oak like but it’s there. Removed the joint and unkeyed the planks that had to come out.

Moving along.

And somehow I was able to rekey it all and voila part one of the work conundrum completed.

Now time to open the wall.

A bit odd framing technique, but I’ll it will still come out and fit the tank.

Somewhere along the way this came into the cabin.

And like normal for me.
I didn’t take pictures as I was givin’ er.

At this point the work conundrum got me again.
There wasn’t room to get the tank in and keep the battery box.
So out came all the batteries, tank in, wall closed back up.
So with the cabin power off, solar disconnected work began in the dark. First step was mailing the paneling back on. Then position the tank. Then battery rack and batteries.

Then all my per work and planning came in.

New cables fed, inverter and charge controller relocated and connections being made.

Power back on and time to clean it up now that it is completely visible. But that will come later. For now it’s been a long day. I must have my Friday nite pizza and a beer or two.

Shoot.

Just realized I didn’t document the 2kW change.

The original 1060 watts of panel.

And original CC.

Old panels removed. Three new 2 x 6” verticals and horizontals added to the new dimensions.

And like that 1980 watts of panel up.

Voltage check is below the threshold of smoke for the new charge controller so it’s go time.

Gold.

Nice job, just deep cell batteries for now?

Also see you are just using a regular inverter with a separate solar controller. Just wondering if you chose that, is what you had or otherwise.

When I started this all out I wanted speparate pieces.
So if one part failed the rest still in operation.
I found this inverter and it has some really good operation parameters. Like -20.
As the place wasn’t/isn’t always heated that was an important parameter.

Now since going to the new controller I’ve been down a few rabbit holes.
I’ll be acquiring a Victron multi plus at some point and putting this inverted as a backup.
Will still be seperate CC and inverter, but charger will be integrated.

As fast as things change in this arena I am waiting to do anything. I don’t have an area where I can get full sun all day and unlike a lot of areas we have plenty of cloudy days to upset the apple cart.
Heat pump system yes, PUD for power yes, for now I can live with that.

Well shoot. While looking at ice pictures I stumbled across a couple other things I accomplished this past week.

First was the building of the new battery stand.
As I’m using lead acid batteries, having them warm is important for capacity. Since I generally have the place warm or make a trip to warm it, having the batteries in an insulated box was counterproductive.

So on to a rack I went.

I am slowly using up all my salvaged material and this old stand was part of the build.
I cut off the feet and bottom section for legs. Added them to an angle perimeter and made the rack.

Added some new paint to put the lipstick on the pig, added 3/4” plywood base and called it done.

And much to my dismay and to my procrastinations credit I had to do some work on the pizza oven.

I talked to my concrete guy to discuss what I did wrong. Have a plan for the next try.

So….

This happened.
And I’m glad I did it. Took all of 15-20 minutes only to smash it out.

At least I kept the forms too (didn’t get them to the burn pile). Pays to be doing too much at times I suppose.

No I was a little too dry on the mix, did not have quite enough water to fully hydrate.
Then didn’t mix it long enough.
Then didn’t vibrate it together well enough.

So a few issues.

On the battery fumes, there is a window in the room that opens to the sunroom.
Exhaust fan out there if need be.
To be honest the only time I’ve ever smelled them was a I was experiencing battery failures last summer. As they dropped a cell they really took to boiling.

Oh yeah, another little project on the go.
Buddy a few cabins down inherited some 90-100 foot hydro poles. Cedar ones.
So he sold the sawmill he had a tad faster than planned and had to cut in haste. Well as the saying goes, haste makes waste.

Am me being stupid, err frugal brought a bunch of the junk pile home.

So I got busy with a skillsaw and table saw.
And quickly ran out of ambition, but not before making some useable stuff.

All at rough 2X at the moment.
I’ve brought out my bandsaw to do more this summer. Not getting stupid without ER access.

Used one chunk as a live edge project.

I had to run the charger for a few hours last week when it rained for two days off and on.

So with the electrical all changed it came to light that the charger output cable was undersized. At least to me it was, as it got hot! Like checking it every 10-15 minutes hot. Now I could still touch it, and Lester has been around forever, but too hot for me.

Staring down a second day of rain or snow tomorrow I’m expecting to need it again possibly.

So out it came, tore apart, and the suspect cable removed.

The original was marked as 12awg but seems too small next to the 10awg I’m replacing it with. If I get bored I might pull out my wire mic and measure it but I doubt it.

It is a very robust charger and added ring terminals and redid the connections.
For those wondering it is a Lester E series, 24 volt smart charger. For floor washer machines and the like.
Will do a test run but suspect it will not be hot now.

So to not let any grass grow under me today I started to tackle the uneven crib and decks.

There was a time not many years ago these were all level and even. The yard drains to the junction of the side deck and walkway and flushes soil out the bottom onto the lake.

So I had to dig out rock. Yes rocks again today.

And I popped the deck out with the big bar. Still not so good.

Time for some sketchy stuff.

Press the go button.

So now I’ve got some digging to do by the looks of things.

Grabbed four eight foot two by six and made some legs to cantilever the first section over and off the winch.
I then attached to the left section and winched it out of the way as well.

It was at this point I began looking for shovels.
Couldn’t find any. Phoned HH6 and everywhere she tough no go. We came to the conclusion that I’ve worn out and broke them all.

So off to my buddies cabin to borrow his.
That resulted in an island tour to check on ice and ended my day.
Not a lot done, but hey I’ve got a bit of time on my hands.

Well. I started digging in the mud and quicksand to get the end of the crib down another 3-4 inches.

I found ice.

So this may take a couple days to accomplish.
I was able to get clearance under most of the crib beam so with a forecast in the mid 60’s there is hope.

Here is where I believe the undermining is coming from. I see this as the drain for the yard.

And a bit of a profile of what need to be removed.

And the quicksand like clay.

I have real-live quicksand in the small pond. There would be no way to get out of that if you weren't attached to something. It's clay-ish but your first step into it you are knee to crotch deep. While you wiggle or make any movement at all you get deeper and deeper. I tried to dig that crap out with the excavator, but no-joy. I went down 6 feet or more and just stayed in it. That's where I dug up that huge snapping turtle. To this day if I manage to get it uncovered while messing with the skid-steer where I covered it in dirt on the slope of the dam, I am stuck.
Maybe some hippies will decide to go swimming in there some day and just like that, we'll have fewer democrat voters.

Post by: Sammconn on May 23, 2022, 10:07:24 AM
Did some more slopping at the crib. Can’t call the goo I was removing digging. The sun got into a few more inches, made melty of the surface ice and turned it into a slurry of sorts. You can see it running into the holes at the edges.
I did however get the top clearanced three more inches and the darned thing ain’t dropping.
I will leave it be as I suspect Jack Frost has a part being played.

I am debating embracing this drain. I have pipe here and am debating driving it out to shore. Then add some excavation and ballast and pour cement. Just not sure all the effort will survive the freeze thaw cycles. So I’m pondering that for about another day. This needs to dry out regardless before I can dig any further.

So off to the next project.

Time to reform the pizza oven base.

As I got to this point HH6 needed to talk…
Then didn’t answer…
Anyhoo, grand baby is coming.
She’s a leavin’.

And yes I crushed most of the old concrete to rubble as well. Couple more chunks to bust up but nearly back to gravel…

It either comes via boat in summer or via sleigh in winter. (Spring for normal folks)
Winter is much simpler as you can deliver it to where it needs to go.
Summer you have to wrestle it in and out the boat, the go where it’s needed.

The Timbers all came on a sleigh. Just can’t find the pictures of when. Mama likely has.
That was a load, Timbers and at least a lift of 8 foot 2 x 6 amongst all the rest of whatever it was.
I do remember the trailer was covered nearly completely about 3 feet high.

I don’t. Some do.
Usually I don’t have the time or need when it can happen.

Snow depth on the ice is an issue, so generally by the time it’s down I’ve already hauled.
I NEED to empty trucks and trailers asap for ADD reasons so when I get home I haul.

I don’t ever ‘plan’ it for good times either.
And until recently, we’ll even still, I can not replace MY truck with the same thing.
I have no use for the gadgets it has, let alone all the new crap.
So it doesn’t go on ice.
That’s a me thing, as it’s totally good to go for a long time generally.
Another factor is I can’t get up to the yard either, so I’d have to haul on sled regardless.
This is probably the biggest reason to be fair.

Fair enough.  I hadn’t given thought to the amount of snow that would sit on the lake, or the snow pile at your property that I’m sure is feet not inches like we get here now

Well. Today I needed to get some concrete placed. There for the cement heads I said it the way you say it supposed to be.

I’m inside a week to get home likely and need to tend to this better this time than last.

Not a lot of pics as I poured this between two meetings this morning in just over an hour.

I hydrated it slightly more and vibrated it in hopefully enough.
Couple hours of set up and not quite ready to finish.
It’s now floated and brushed where needed, covered with packing blankets and wet. Should be good.
Zero beers involved this time around and I think I’ve got a winner. Will unwrap the package next week.
It’s been raining off and on since I poured it so had to get it covered as soon as I worked it.
