Title: Socket/Wrench Set
Post by: Dawg25385 on May 15, 2015, 12:59:01 PM
I'd needed to buy a complete socket/wrench set for quite awhile now... I just have a hodge-podge of hand me downs and would like to have a complete set.

I've been eyeballing this one for quite awhile, and wanted to get your guys' opinion. I can't afford Snap-on/Mac/Matco so please hold those recommendations  ;) I've got kind of a complex and am pretty brand specific, so I narrowed down on Craftsman for all my hand tools. Looked at Craftsman/Husky/Kobalt, and I think the Craftsman may have a slight edge, and still have their lifetime warranty. Craftsman seems to have more of the specialty tools over the other 2 as well.

http://www.craftsman.com/craftsman-348-piece-mechanics-tool-set/p-00934348000P

MSRP $600, normally sells for $500, on sale on a Hot Buy for $329

Should i swoop this up? Do you see anything in there that is totally MEH? I like that 100 of the 348 pieces aren't stupid screwdriver bits like to see in some combo sets.

Thanks!

I still like Craftsman hand tools. Warranty is not what it used to be (have to send in)
but the sockets and sets are great. I actually like my HF composite ratchets better though, but craftsman work fine.

That is a deal

Kyle, that set will serve you many years, as long as you keep from using an (air) impact on the sockets. Seems like a pretty darn good deal.

Yes, what Ken said.
Impacts will chew the sockets up.
Air tools=no warranty.
Otherwise they are great. Have a smaller set as part of my stuff.

Like you I'm not into the big names.
Caveat to that I do own a few Snap On ratchets. I like them a lot.
Otherwise too much name price.

Looks like a good set. I have a large assortment of Craftsman tools. One set I purchased in 1972!

Like JR, the plastic composite HF ratchets are a steal for the asking price, I use them mostly

I can tell you from experience, the same amount from snappy would be $3k plus !

Although I do not like to plug non American made stuff, just about everything including our president is no longer "American Made"

Over at HF, I purchased pretty much everything shown in the craftsman pic and I have tried to break them but no luck. I use the ratchets as hammers and that will get the job done (Destroying a good tool) and I have used all of them in a impact gun making 650 ft/lbs, and still they live.

I also bought four sets of Lowes brand ratchet sets in boxes for my deployable set and haven't hurt them either.

Besides all that, I always shot for $1 per tool sets by C. That is just what you have there.

I ended up picking a set up today. Will be a bit before I get to unbox them, but I'm happy to have been able to take advantage of the sale

Those will be lifetime companions as long as you don't end up with some red dog clone!
