Well, with an advertised torque rating of a whole bunch, I purchased Dewalt's premier impact gun a few months ago, and used it (Tried to anyway) on the GJ suspension project.
In a word: It's a total waste of money and plastic. I doubt it could loosen a rusted #4 screw!
Im evaluation never really took place because that thing never actually loosened a single nut...NOT ONE!
I started on the lug nuts. Nada...Just noise and ratchet like sounds. I pulled out my 1/2" harbor freight earthquake tool and bam! Lug nuts spun off like butter!
Tried to loosen the lower shock bolts and again it failed. I switched batteries twice, one time pulling one off the charger. It couldn't loosen anything.
Piece of junk, evaluation complete.
My recommendation is to gift it to that liberal hippie cousin we all have, first telling them it is a skilsaw, and at least get a laugh out of this useless POJ!

I was doing the same thing and couldnt break a lugnut. I used a breaker bar expecting it was going to kill me after i couldn't find a cheater bar to use. I was astonished (and PO'd) that it was so easy to break free. I'm glad to have one but I bought it to have in the truck for flats figuring it's a lot faster than the old 4 way. But I may be wrong. Sheesh.

I bleed yellow...except for impacts.
I have the big Milwalkee Fuel 18 volt brushless.
It's a monster.
It will break things.
2005 Chevy Impala, axle nut. By hand aweful couple hours, broken stuff. 2 minutes with the big Milealkee, and that was to save the nut and axle shaft from galling due to heat and stuff buildup.
Yeah it's that good.

The only cordless impact that works as advertised is a Snap on... and it's spendy.
( I tried the DeWalt as well)
Edit: to be fair I didn't try the Milwaukee even tho I have most of the fuel series at work)

Well, I won't say it is the best, but I am very happy with my Porter Cable 20v.
Honestly I have not tried a lug nut with it. But I used it for the H1 wheels and some long lags and it worked great. Guess I will have to try a lug just to see now.
So I did. Just walked out and blew 2 lugs off the 1101 trailer and 2 off the 2500 sub. 14mm on the sub and the trailer has H1 wheels. So it gets the thumbup award!

I bought the Harbor Fraught 3/8” impact gun a while back to aid in dismantling parts trucks. Haven’t found a bolt it couldn’t break loose or break in half due to rust yet. For my needs it does the job.
If I relied on one every day, I’d probably attempt to pony up the cash for a tool truck one, have used the snapon one and yea she’ll run!

That really suprises me because we have the 18 volt version and it's a beast. Sure sometimes I have to roll out an air hose and grab the trusty snap on air impact. But the dewalt has always been good and sturdy. I don't know how many times its been left in the rain in the back of the pickup. Bounced around in the toolbox. Dropped and what not. It still works as good as the day we go it.
Possibility you just got a bad one?

This Dewalt is surprisingly weak...Definitely not a go-to tool. Strong Re-gift candidate!

I doubt it
It may be defective, but it runs like the battery is nearly dead, although the batteries are fresh. It doesn't hit with any appreciable power at all.

My brother works at a Home Depot in Tampa area. He just said that Dewalt is is owned by Black and Decker and they both suck now. All the contractors are moving toward Milwaukee and Rigid. If you have a Rigid or Ryobi tool that breaks they will fix it rightnow there at the store or send it out. And they have life time battery replacement if you register them.

I agree that the Rigid has a pretty good warranty. Had my set from over 10 years ago fixed or replaced many times. It is used daily. It is a long and painful process at times though. Eventually my 24V Rigid stuff was warrantied out for 18V stuff which is not nearly as good. Not a fan of Ryobi. The few Ryobi tools we have purchased were geared to homeowners more than the trades. Their batteries did not hold up and i think most of the internals were plastic and stripped out. But, homeowners and older people like the light weight feel. Not a fan of any one tool manufacturer and have a mix of stuff. To me the tool must feel right. Dewalt does not have the best warranty and i think they need to improve the life span of their batteries but i run stuff hard all day and Dewalt is still in my truck. I am going to try the flex volt dewalt stuff soon. Some of my tools get run so hard you can no longer hold them due to their heat. I have actually caught my Rigid drill and circular saw on fire more than once. Rigid replaces them. Makita and Milwaukee are both good also. The battery tools have gotten pretty good over the years. Sometimes when you are really working the tools there is no replacement for a corded tool.

I would suggest getting a torque watch to determine the amount of torque.

Yup, but I really liked the disassembly and review process; gives a good assessment of how it’s built etc. TRN - my thoughts exactly, but given his statement that wishbone rules apply, he declared a winner! That guy takes apart all kinds of stuff this way too!

Trying to think what applications one might have, I use the to measure breaking points or at what point a motor, seal and gear set will start to rotate, usually if they exceed a certain number the part fails our inspection. The higher the torque required to turn something the more stress added to the drive motor....... I guess you could math out the amount of torque required to turn a crank shaft on a motor and determine if your shimming job is to tight, or the pistons/ring gap is to much. But that’s a lot of math ain’t nobody wants to do.
