Too bad for the XJ, thought that was coming along quite well.

You/your dad have plans for this one?

Of course they do Don!  A Jeep may be the only thing in existence that demands mods more than an AR-15!

I think that is the most true statement ever recorded in the history of man......

Crappy pic and the plates are prior owners btw. This was yesterday, it got up into the 50's for a day so we dropped xj off at my shop waiting to see if we can come to a conclusion with the insurance company soon. The tj had a major exhaust leak which I found when inspecting it, the manifold collector had one of the two bolts missing. So $2.58 for a bolt with washer at Ace hardware and we had that back together. I machined parts as Baylee wrenched on her TJ and Xj swapping batteries as we know the history on the xj unit and it was a couple hundred CCA's higher to boot. We removed the air box to get to the exhaust and it needed changed so while out buying a bolt we purchased a new one of those too.

Other than a steering box line leak the Jeep is pretty solid. Prior female owner kept very good records. She was the most honest person I think I have ever dealth with when buying a car, very sweet girl. Told us and had recorded with documentation the last 9 years worth of records. This jeep is a 5 speed with the 2.4 cyl gas motor. Baylee is learning to drive a manual. She may be drivng the Honda for awhile yet......

Best anti theft device nowadays is a manual transmission.

No joke, read about a few here in Denver where thieves left em once they couldn’t drive em.

It’s on the to do list for each of the girls, their list and I agree. Baylee swapped batteries by herself other than me having to help her knock loose the stock battery clamps on tj. Then having to critic her quality wrenching on reinstalling the hold down on tj battery. But pretty impressed all in all, at one point I was trying to explain something in the beginning and she was irritated. So I ask what’s wrong, her response was something along the lines of “I know I just want to get this done let’s go already...”

Key Dad shutting the H up and back to machining GLO parts!   :likebutton:

I know it's too bad that it was totaled considering all the work and new parts sitting in the shop waiting to go on it :(...

Future plans are to install a security lock box underneath front drivers seat, security box in tailgate as well, military grade terminals just like the ones we put into the xj, flat fenders, 33 in tires off jk once dad puts the 38 in tires on his jeep, shocks, and new rims. Probably going to need some oh shoot handles as well...

Baylee ordered the behind the rear flip n fold seat security compartment this evening (creates an enclosure behind rear seat and you can access it by locking or unlocking tailgate) and then a lock box under drivers seat. Both units made by tuffy and this will keep thieves at her high school at bay hopefully. CD player has removable face plate.

She has a set of the military grade battery terminal al in route as the stock positive one had a crack in it. Being that it is a 4 cylinder we are planning to keep weight down on this build. Eventually custom bumpers front and rear. Both will have hitch insert for portable winch so we will eventually wire front and rear for winch hookup to battery.

Tires on jk are 32.8, thinking we can fit them with shallower back spaces rims and aftermarket flat fender flares. May need a small spacer or a set of taller springs (think 1-2” range) & new shocks.

She received a set of round tube side steps smittybilt brand with Jeep, we will probably install they are still in the box.

I believe she is buying para cord handles again from the retired navy guy he makes a nice all American built product.
Lastly would be gears and lockers.

Brings back memories of teaching my wife to drive a manual.  Eventually I just took her to the parking lot of sears store on a Sunday (back when stores were closed on Sundays) and just got out and let her figure it out on her own

I tried to teach my older sister one time.  My dad had tried and failed so he thought I should give it a go.  I was still in high school at the time and believe I had about an hour before I needed to get to the farm for evening chores.  I believe we made it about half way around the country block, (on the third stop sign) before I needed to take over so I wasn't late for work.  My sister still doesn't know how to drive stick.

I have found that if you explain whats happening as their foot connects with and leaves the clutch pedal, as well as having them hold the clutch pedal right at the point of contact helps them understand what it is that they are actually doing.

I have also found that regardless how good of drivers parents "THINK" they are, their children will learn better with a stranger.  why you ask?  because kids seems to take it personally when they aren't doing what their parents are telling them as well as think they are letting them (the parents) down.

Baylee was doing same thing right off the bat. So she slowed down throughout the whole release of clutch. So as Nate stated had to explain what was happening and when. Now she understands bottom half of pedal movement isn’t really doing anything it’s the top 1/4 that really matters. After that she did much better.

Way to go Baylee,

And don't worry about anyone behind you. That is their problem. There are TOOOOoooo many angry people in this world and you won't please them all. All in a rush to go no where.

With a little practice you will get it down cold. Good skill to learn. Especially when you head for the hills and over the rocks.

I concur, if you ever road with Baylee you need these. Sluff is the retired navy guy btw & all components are American made. He is also a staunch 2a supporter. Baylee has a bit of an issue as he was changing card processing services when she ordered due to the former being anti 2a.

Now Baylee can put some junk in her trunk.....

Unit was made by best top from what looked to be 14ga steel that had been powdered black. It was relatively easy to assemble and install. They give you a makeshift nutsert install tool (spacer and long bolt) however we just used our chinaman handy tool (I didn’t break it this time) and the inserts were easily secured in factory holes after removing the oem rubber plugs. Now the tj has a secure lockable trunk.

So Don sent a beautiful fabricated center console he had in his basement. Two things stopped us, one was there ebrake handle and the other was that as you go rearward between the seats they taper together. I looked at cutting it apart and reassemblying it but in the end it was just too nice of a piece to do that with.

I tried to talk Baylee into more conservative tires and wheels, I lost that battle. She did decide to keep the tire height manageable to keep fuel mileage and drive ability within reason. She also has a new Bluetooth kenwood deck coming in too.

Baylee’s job’s

Duluth trading sales associate
Nanny & tutor after school
Babysitter (random parents)
Rec center day care

I call that patchwork economics...

Mom & Dad help offset insurance costs (crazy expensive) and provide fuel when she runs her sisters. We also finance things for the girls & pull maintenance. The idea for them buying their own car is a money lesson, saving and working for things. Ask Baylee if it’s expensive to be cool and see what she says!

Abd to add a bit of historical context, In my day (Orville and wilbur wright were gettin' started) the wheels would have black centers and shiny lips. Modern wheels seems to have reversed the older trend.
