Title: Glock mods
Post by: TexasRedNeck on August 20, 2019, 10:54:27 PM
So a while back...quite a while back I promised to do a detailed write up on some of my favorite glock mods.

As a teaser I’ll start this and work on it this weekend

Since I was getting a recipe dialed in last week I wanted to crono the ammo in a full size pistol. I only had my G30 with a 3.78 bbl length. My G21 is in the safe next to the bed in Houston so I had to scrounge through the stash and pull out a NIB Glock 21 genIII for testing. Now that I opened the box it’s only fitting that I keep shooting it and that means I need to do my favorite mods.

First up will be the Ghost Rocket trigger disconnect that reduces the pull to 3.5 lbs and allows precise adjustment of overtravel.

Then an extended mag release and some trijicon night sights and the maritime firing pin spring cups

Here’s a list of parts.

https://ghostinc.com/ghost-maritime-spring-cups-for-glocks-gen-1-4/

https://ghostinc.com/ghost-rocket-3-5-for-glocks-gens-1-4/

https://ghostinc.com/vickers-glock-tactical-magazine-catch/

https://www.trijicon.com/na_en/products/product2_hdns.php?mid=8

Not that I plan on shooting underwater but the debris cleaning/clearing aspect in a dirty environment is a good thing.

A person can get crazy with mods but these are the ones that I find most valuable for a defense weapon. A glock is supremely reliable in stock form and generally the more you futz with something the less reliable it gets.

You can make and even lighter and faster trigger but at the expense of reliability imho

Tungsten guide rods and other mods are not necessary

I have a G17 that is my training weapon and it has about 19,000 rounds down it. At about 16,000 I replaced all the springs just as a preventive measure after the disconnector spring broke. All stock except the mods I lost here. Mostly run with crappy wolf steel cased ammo and left dirty and treated poorly.

At one time I wanted to see if I could get it to malfunction. Ran nearly 2000 rounds through it and that wolf ammo had it so carboned up I was using a small screwdriver to pick carbon chunks out of the extractor but it never malfunctioned.

As a matter of fact it’s never FTF or FTE in 19000 rounds

Don’t think Ken can say the same about his 100 year old designed 1911

Nice write up Tex, I should be picking up my g5 17 from my brother in a few weeks when I make it to dallas.  Small box of mods r ready for it already similar to yours.

OK lets start.   Glock 21SF Gen III
(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190824/a1dfff9ab41ccc07273e54baaf8f767a.jpg)
Make sure its unloaded.  Really.  Make sure its unloaded.
Ghost rocket disconnect and a disassembly tool and short slide cover plate.  Don't attempt this without the short slide cover plate  or you wont be able to dryfire and disassemble later.
Pins get pushed  out from right to left.  Except the trigger pin which I remove left to right because the slide release spring will only catch once.  Push the slide release lever towards the front of the weapon to help the step on the pin clear the wire spring on the slide release lever.
Once the pins are out pry up on the locking block to remove.  Then the trigger group can come out

pry up on the rear of the trigger group (https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190824/89f657e0165fdfffc72d2068d5483072.jpg)
and it lifts out like such
(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190824/b505ad1b6e2832ff9d8b97d38ebaef97.jpg)
and there is the empty lower
(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190824/1915e2580d4cefc427cadda810fc22fa.jpg)
Pry up on the trigger disconnect to create some room to pull the trigger bar from the slot and rotate out of the way.

Take note of how the spring connects.
The factory 5 pound trigger disconnect and the ghost rocket.  Note the extra tab which is what creates a over travel limit.  The angle of the flat surface at the rear.  The lower the angle the easier to disconnect the trigger (fire the weapon)
To remove the slide cover use a small screwdriver to pry down on the cover. BUT PAY ATTENTION HERE.  The firing pin and extractor pin are under pressure.  The extractor pin will fly across the room if you dont hold your thumb over the end while sliding the cover off.
Here you can see the short slide cover installed.  Press down on the firing pin when sliding the cover back in and then press down on the extractor spring to get it to slide the rest of the way

Here you can see the difference in the short slide cover. You'll need that access to make the firing pin release during the fitting
(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190824/69a9665db84e3e9a1cda397d0274e972.jpg)
Here is the unmodified ghost rocket disconnect
(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190824/7942d262defae05f6aaa44dc07a2c8d0.jpg)
Here it is after taking a little off the tab with a dremel.  go slow and only take off a bit at a time.
reinstall all the parts and try to fire it.  At first it won't fire so you have to reach in through the short slide cover and push down on the release to get the pin to fire.  Keep disassembling and filing a small amount until the wepon just barely will fire.  Then just a hair more and your done.  Note how there is no overtravel and a very short reset.

Ok so second mod. The firing pin cups
When you have the slide end plate off, simply slide the firing pin out
(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190824/ebce033ed731bd590e276a8ee2b76085.jpg)
Here are the maritime cups.  Note they are not solid all the way around.  They ride on the small ridges which allow water and debris through without jamming the pin up
(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190824/747cc44aebf547944e8a959a28e929dc.jpg)
Set it on its end and compress the spring with your fingers by pulling down on it.  Then use the other hand to remove the factory cups by using a thumbnail to lift up on each half.  Simply insert the new ones as the reverse of removal and you are good to go.

This could be the reverse of the myth busters on shooting into water. Set your target up on the deck outside the pool and shoot out at it. Man, the more I think about this, the more fun it sounds like. Road trip to Texas next weekend for the win!!

There are videos of people firing Glocks and etc underwater. I don't recommend people doing it,and I'm pretty adamant that they don't perform unsafe acts, however that's my personal opinion and people will do what they please.

Ok. Night sight time
Trijicon tritium sights
(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190902/40c69f322f56de1d26b15a00caff1087.jpg)
This is the glock sight tool  They make one for straight sided sights and beveled. This is the straight sided one but as you will see it works just fine on the beveled.
you can see that it has a rail that the slide rails slide on to and then the wheel tightens it up to hold the slide tight
(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190902/958cce513c430dc8db96cf420aa6a72b.jpg)
Then by turning the side handle it shoves the sight laterally out of the groove. Installation is the reverse
(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190902/d4a8403001393ac44895709d0000c00d.jpg)
Front factory sight is plastic and it has an expanding pin in the underside that holds it in place.  Punch it out from the bottom

The Trijicon front sight has a small very thin and flat screw that holds it in and the entire thing is metal.
It requires a special socket , very thin wall.  I have the correct one now. In the past I used a standard socket that I ground down to make it thin wall
(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190902/491fa3b6c6e7ed2bfe932f59b8c38e7e.jpg)
Use lock tite
(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190902/c7301d76f2727fcbbd6bb3844b390b83.jpg)
Finished. will check windage at the range tomorrow

More glock mods today.  Took a NIB G19 and started working with my favorite company mods.  Ghost makes the best glock trigger parts IMO and instead of using the ghost rocket 3.5 adjustable trigger overtravel I used the newer EVO Pro 3.3.  Same concept as the Rocket but a little lighter. ( they have a TCT or a trigger control tab that you file and fit to control the rearward over travel, which also reduces trigger reset)

This time in addition to the maritime cups I also went with a totally new spring package including a lower power spring for the safety plunger, lower power (4lb) firing pin spring, and a 6 lb trigger spring (higher spring pressure on the trigger makes the pull lighter).  The 4 lb firing pin spring is not recommended for self defense due to possible light primer strikes.

Installed and adjusted the trigger control tab to get near zero overtravel and short reset and polished all the mating surfaces and it it the lightest trigger pull Ive ever had on a glock.  Not sure I would recommend it or allow anyone to shoot it that I didnt know for sure had solid safety and trigger control.

It’s smooth and no stacking or creep but scary soft pull.  I may go back to the higher power firing pin spring but I’ll run some rounds through tomorrow to function check.

AAR tomorrow.

Ok. Ran about 100 rounds down it this morning on the steel target range.

A little El Presidente and some basic draw from concealment and moving and shooting.

First up I always like to confirm if what I’m carrying will actually fire the first time when needed. First mag was Winchester 147gn hollow point.

Then I ran training ammo, wolf steel case.

No FTF, no misfires. Just shoots like all glocks.

It’s a very smooth light pull and definitely makes you mindful of safety discipline.

My only complaint is that on some double taps that the follow up is actually a bit too fast and I wasn’t back on target before it fired the second time. Minor complaint and it will just take a little getting used to but at close range it won’t matter like shooting. 5.5x7.5 ipsc at 10 yards.

So out of curiousity I compared primer strikes from this glock to my standard glock 17 with standard springs.

Standard on top , light spring on the bottom. If there is a difference it’s really hard to tell.

Overall very pleased but I may swap the firing spring if I decide to EDC it.

Well since y’all are done throwing H and Ken under the bus…

Modded another glock, a 23 this time with just the maritime cups and the Ghost Rocket fitted trigger disconnect at 3.5lb and the Ameriglo tritium night sights.  Another fine shooting Glock it is.

Picking up another 27 tomorrow and will work on it in the coming weeks and then determine if I keep EDC the 23 or go to the 27.  Likely will keep the 23 as primary and put the 27 in a new ankle holster I got recently.

Holster seems to hold up the weapon from riding down and moving about.  I’ll report back after some more long term wear.

Now on to night sights, maritime cups and 3.5lb trigger fitting.

I wore the leg rig for 8 hours while out of state and it wore well and stayed tight. Definitely recommend.

Went to a new site called The Glock Store www.glockstore.com and bought some of these gizmos that fill the gap when using the longer higher capacity mags in a small frame weapon

Here is the one for the G22 mags when used in a G23(works for 17 in a 19 too). I also got the one for the 23 mag to be used in the 27
