Our boys look professional
I have had literally thousands of jumps out the back of my hook, static line and HALO/HAHO. I watch them from the cockpit either directly or in the rear view mirror. I can't say I have ever seen anything like that. Always very clean and quick exit...almost as if they wanted to get out of the aircraft...(Yikes!)
So, funny story
I was over at Bragg, way back when, jumping a bunch of special operators on Sicily DZ. As we were climbing out one of the engines made some popping/banging noises. I believe it was a compressor stall. That's a weird thing where the combustion stuff burps out the front of the motor, usually taking a couple hundred compressor blades with the "Burp."
So, I was a pretty new copilot flying with a really old guy, a W4 who happened to be in the unit when the 160th had initially formed. I and many others felt these guys were not real special operators as they went through none of the training I had to complete to get a seat there. He just wasn't sharp.
Anyway, I remember saying, "Burt, we're having a compressor stall, reduce power." He answered that there was nothing wrong and just kept climbing at like 85% power giving us a very healthy 3,000 FPM climb rate. I told him immediately, "Get the power out or you'll blow the dammed thing apart.
We were off the resevation climbing through 5,000. I remember that because the bubbas armed their AOD's (automatic opening device) at five grand. Well the next thing I hear is the sergeant in the back saying, "They're going, they're jumping." The jumpmaster, a salty old master sergeant heard us arguing over the intercom and ordered his people to bail out, leaving us to our troubles.
Personally, I think it was a good move. When we turned we saw a nice line of a dozen or so square chutes hanging 4,000 feet or so over that big lake north of Bragg...
Yea, they landed all over creation and we obviously didn't jump anyone else that day.

Bad fuel control unit
Didn't grenade it, luckily
We flew over to Simmons Army Airfield where another chinook unit swapped out the engine for us. They were truly great. While it was in the shop, they did a sheet metal repair on the upper transmission door, replaced almost all of our ICS (Intercom) boxes, and swapped out radios we were having a problem with.
And that's notable because back then the 160th was a totally classified unit, as in we did not officially exist. We had screaming eagle patches spray painted on the nose, but we weren't fooling anyone. With SatCom antennas on the roof, a whole suite of added radios, fast-rope rigs, added fuel tanks and crap like that everyone knew. And everyone hated us. We were the "Sugar Boys" of the Armee at that time and we had authority to literally just grab an aircraft from another unit. Imagine how that made everyone else feel.

Ya, nothing from those days was recorded nor photographed. At least nothing that isn't sitting behind locked doors somewhere. So as per the rules, I guess it didn't happen
