Another M4 build
« on: September 16, 2014, 05:52:41 PM »
used a display lower that was custom made for the pilots on a project I worked on in the Stan. It had collected too much dust, but now it will be spraying copper and lead on a regular basis!

THe second build is a scratch POF lower reciever using DPMS small parts kit, and some custom stuff.
Here's the mess:

The DPMS pieces parts are very affordable, but as I was soon to find out not necessarily the best fitting and not all made for the POF lower...Did I memtion I learned?? Well I REALLY LEARNED as you will soon see ;-((

That's where easy ended for me.
THe M4 build directions I was referencing called for the bolt release to be installed next and retained with a press in pin. Little did I know that the POF lower retains the bolt release with a threaded stud...yea...
So I taped up the reciever and started to tap the reluctant pin into place. It just wasn't going but I persisted, then it suddenly gave, or did it? Upon close inspection, I noticed I cracked a small piece off the bolt release pin boss!!!!!

Man, I was/am bummed.
This is not just any reciever.
The serial number of this one is 00160!
I was a 160th pilot, the hargest to get into aviation unit in the armed forces! I had a reciever with the unit's number as the serial number! And I just cracked it!!!!!!!!

Well, I am not trashing it, maybe it is repairable, if not, I will use some epoxy on it and paint over it and put the weapon in the gun case on display!

But I am going to shoot it, maybe just once, cracked or not!

And with a well seasoned upper. You might have noticed the Bravo Company new upper went onto the bumpfire gun. I have had this upper for many moons and it is very accurate with 62 gr green tip ammo.

Since these two were born about an hour apart, I'll refer to them as the "twins!"
So welcome the new additions to the family of black guns, one will look pretty and one will chew up brass and steel cases on a regular basis!

Nice stuff there Don. I opened up the safety area a little to much on a 300aac build of mine and the JB filled it fine (pistol). Time will tell though.

I understand many of the military M4s use that method for the pins too. Makes sense because pins fall out way to easy.

See you are a Magpul fan too :D

Supposed to get a 16 inch upper tomorrow from Aries. Chambered in Wilde 223, full float 16 inch with m16 BCG (they had the uppers for $399, now 425) Picked up a spare BCG both in phosphate($80) and Nickle Boron ($100)

Pick up my duty G22 next Tuesday but they boned me and only gave me a 10 round mag, can you believe that!!!

Ncstar red/green dot knockoff, 1x works great!! He played with a few scopes and went back to that, likes 62 gr best.

That 62 gr shoots pretty good, but does not get the job done like you'd think...only a 4mm steel penetrator I think on the M855 ammo (Is that right???) Anyway, it's like giving folks injections with larger needles.
I recall one reg sized person who required like 6 doses before he found his peace

Now the 70 something bullet is flat lethal

Now let me say something that is hard to hear: The rusky 5.45 is better. Nasty oglive core or some 3.5mm me thinks which does not stay straight, but rather goes all manner of sideways when it hits. That's why an oglive in lieu of a point...balance/unbalance...

The 5.45 works by moving the center of gravity to the rear of the bullet. This makes the bullet more stable in flight, and therefore more accurate.
However, once the bullet hits, it destabilizes very quickly and tumbles sooner and faster than the 7.62x39.
The 7.62x39 starts to tumble after penetrating about 7 3/4" and usually tumbles once.
The 5.45 starts to tumble in 2 1/2" and tumbles at least twice.

Tumbling is caused by:
copper plated mild steel outer jacket, the blunt mild steel inner core, the lead "cap" on top of the core and surrounding it between the core and outer jacket, and the hollow air cavity in the nose

I googled the above info so I wouldn't give bad info.

Now the 70 something bullet is flat lethal

You thinking about the 77gr?

Good job

The 5.45 also has less recoil and -depending on who you ask, what you read, you're personal experience- it's supposed to be more accurate than the 7.62. However, I've not had the opportunity to try one out and see for myself.

Me either...
The Romanians who I sort of worked with in RC-South had them
They liked them
What got me inquisitive was when I saw surplus 5.45 ammo, $139.95 for 1080 rusky sealed spam cans!!!!!!!!

Then the guns were like $500 ish

So for a grand you get the gun + 4000 rounds and money left over for a foot long philly cheese steak!
No brainer
But I paused
Guess I'm a no brainer...
