As some of you know I am new to my area as we just relocated from 18 hours away. The locals I know I can count on my one hand. So I happen to get notice of a local course called CERT. It is a program designed by FEMA and administered to locals for free by the police dept. Part of the gig is that they have us earn our CPR / AED certificate (good idea for everyone). Second is they utilize community volunteers in the case of a disaster and for other things like the local fireworks show helping guide knuckleheads to correctly park their cars etc. Anyhow I saw this as an opportunity to A) help and B) gain local knowledge at a faster pace than I would have otherwise. Just an idea that may fit for some of the other folks here on the board..........

One 8 hour day left, for the most part it has been informative. I would recommend it if you have the time to volunteer.

I would like to see the program now. I took it over 10 years ago now when it was just in its infancy...wonder how much has changed.

I think a lot depends on who is administering the program. Also depends on your "area" as we are prone to floods, wildfires and tornados. Missing people so search and rescue is also common place here with all the extreme outdoor activities. Our instructor is pretty much not by the book. Hits main points and then focuses on our AO

Completed this program today, we did active shooter drills. I got shot on four different occasions, don't think the goal was to get killed but I kept becoming a target somehow..... :o
We also did a vehicle roll over crash / injury drill. Was fairly realistic, but I recall from a real life scenario once that the adrenaline really pumps when it's real and not so much in this drill.
Active shooter was a little more intense. All in all it was well put together and definitely gives you some inside the box perspective.

Sounds like a good gig.
Active shooter trainer can be fun. We used to do it in closed schools and courthouses.

I wight say moving to fast as to not check for threats, slicing the pie and other things. Like staying against the wall.
But then all scenarios are diff, teams my not work together or understand their job.

We had the local police come and do an active shooter drill with teachers during an institute once- no kids in the building. One officer playing the role of the shooter came in and did door checks acting crazy and shot off blanks- rest of the force took him out via rest of drill. Needless to say, one of our highly educated morons lost her grip on reality and had to be escorted out in an ambulance and didn't return for the rest of the week............and that was with everyone KNOWING it was a drill! The one good part was knowing who would go with you towards the trouble and those who would cower in the corner waiting to absorb the lead. :-\
