80% lower builds
« on: January 28, 2021, 10:37:05 PM »
So I ventured into the world of these

Picked up the 5dtactical jig for Ar10-15.

Picked up a few of both types of lowers to try out

All in all it went well on the first one except

The router bobbled way down in and took out the trigger safety detent pin hole.

I called and emailed and they answered three weeks later.  Drop shipped me a new lower and I was back in happy mode.

I used the dewalt battery router and all their supplies tools.   It went well round two with slow steps and smooth hand motion.

Today I carved out a ar10 lower also.

This is where I found a few oops orders

I ordered lower parts kits for ar15x4.   I didn’t think the pins were different so I have an extra trigger set for now

Now for help from you more advanced gun folks

I need to order a few ar10 308 parts

I need buffer tubes and stocks,
I need to order basic trigger and lower parts kits.

From there I should have shooters

But I can’t find the 308 parts kits

I need to order the parts that keep the pins from backing out and for the life I can’t think of the name lol

Dave,

Not sure which pin your trying to prevent from backing out, but are you talking about a detent ball and spring?

The pins that hold the trigger in,  they screw in instead of being just simply pushed into place

You may find this list helpful

https://www.wingtactical.com/blog/what-parts-are-interchangeable-between-ar15-ar10/

Also what you are wanting is the anti walk pins. Knights armament makes them.

I also noticed my magazine release seems to be narrower then needed for the ar10.  Does it matter how tight I install the button?   On Ar15 you flush the screw to the outside of the push button.  Do you just leave it loose or not flush on the ar10?

You using ar15 mag release or AR10?  The button and spring are interchangeable but the release is not.

Charles,
just looking to see what I have usable from the Ar15 parts kit,  on brownells it has the mag release labeled as ar10-15 in some locations.    I wasn’t sure and thought I would ask

Adjustable gas blocks are nice if you run a can.  If you don’t plan on running a can, then you can fine tune with buffer weight.  Gas port size determines how much gas gets to the carrier.  Most mfgs over gas just to make sure everything runs in their uppers. Buffers are cheap, start with a standard buffer and see if you have any issues with it bouncing hard and then you can move up to a heavy buffer if needed.

Charles, my experience with the AR10 builds was starting with the regular buffer then buying heavy buffer. I then eventually swapped to adjustable gas block to finish dialing it in. That’s just my personal experience and spending extra money after buying two of both. To each their own but I’d personally start with heavy buffer and adjustable gas block if I chose to take on that headache again.

So the upper I purchased does not have an adjustable gas block on it,   Suggestion?

Dave (I forget which # you are) just go with a regular basic gas block and buffer spring/weight. Once you get it all assembled and fire it you'll know if you need/want to start adjusting it to fit your own personal situation. If you have to start changing things, change them one at a time. I'd recommend doing it with the same ammo to test it everytime.

Depending on which pattern it is, parts might be easier or harder to find. I found in helping others, that DPMS pattern was more abundant, but that's just what I experienced.

What're you wanting to use it for? That barrel length I'd personally just stick an A1 or A2 stock since they are cheap, however you could drop some money and get a MagPul PRS. Although, I have seen people stick a collapsible stock on it.

Here the thing

I don’t shoot, it’s kinda like garage tools I like them but don’t want to use them lol

I know it’s terrible.   I’d like to be an active target shooter but it’s expensive, it’s hard here unless you belong to a club

I like the collapsible stock on my other ar15,

I’ll look at the magpul you mention

I like the adjustable cheek pad

Don't you guy have all kinds of public land out there? I was in Hyrum for a couple days last month and I wanted to wander the mountains for a couple weeks.

There is lots of that type of space but it’s usually surrounded by private farms,  if you could shoot on it they frown on it do to “fire danger”

Correct, we have lots of National forests you can shoot in but it’s limited upon precipitation and fire bans.
