I got this one from my old First Sergeant. I about spit coffee all over my monitor! LOL! We were lucky not to have any LTs like this one in our Troop.

I also shared this with my 3rd year Cadets, with the instruction not to be like this guy. LOL

After I finished a night land nav course, I was waiting for the rest of the people to finish when I got a phone call from one of the guys from my platoon still out on the course. This takes place about 0000-0100ish.

Him: " I'm lost.."

Me: " Where are you roughly? Which point/grid were you heading to?" .... I knew which lane he was working so I was looking at my map at this time.

Him: " I don't know, I fell in a hole and rolled down a hill.."

Me: " You hurt? what do you see around you?"

Him: " Trees, dirt and a hill.."

Me: " You have your weapon and SI?"

Him: " Yea"

Me: " Well suck it up and use the panic azimuth (took you back to a certain road intersection) and figure it out"

He passed the course, FYI.

LOL! Had something similar happen a time or two.

Millennials can be a pain, especially the city-folk. I had a Cadet several years ago fail her day land nav because the point she needed to pass had a spider on it, and she would rather fail than get near it. LOL!

I've had a Cadet run screaming from the night land nav course because she "heard a noise" (probably an owl) and thought it was big-foot. LOL!

I had a Cadet who got hopelessly lost because he was terrain associating using roads. The problem was the map data was from the 1970s, and although I told them all that the roads on the map did not necessarily match what was on the ground, he refused to listen. LOL!

All these learned their lesson over time. The worst problems I had were the engineering students. They could not grasp that their point wasn't exactly where their pace count said it should be. The affects of terrain, and ambient light, on pace count and azimuth was completely lost on them. LOL! They would actually argue, "But my pace count says it should be right here!" LOL!

Night time pace count in rough terrain with a ruck is soo much fun.

Right? LOL! When in doubt, push on another 100m, and look again. LOL!
