Out door sprinkler timer wiring question
« on: June 06, 2016, 09:40:38 PM »

Sprinkler/ irrigation system. Wired to the outside of the house, I have ten homes that need these timers replaced but the builder didn't put them inside next to a power supply, they have a cord pushed through a hole on the outside of the home and plugged in on the inside of the garage.  So box is outside and power is inside.
To wire the new boxes I don't want to get into the home owners garage, I want to just simply cut the outside wire and splice into the new boxes cable and use shrink sleeve to cover the connection

Is this ok on outdoor connections?

bump...

It's just low voltage right? like 9 volts? Transformer in garage probably?
Not my field of expertise but it sounds logical....low voltage isn't picky, but maybe someone else that knows will chime in.

Nope it's 120 v plug in the garage through the wall into the timer then it converts to the valves with low voltage

Well you can use heat shrink tube which is cheapest or there are connectors that have a goo like substance that covers & seals the splice. I'm guessing they have a paint on goo as well that works similar. Best bet is to stop by electrical supply house & let them tell you, they would be the ones to ask.

Get some new sprinkler wire and splice onto the existing (wire nuts filled with dielectric grease) and push them through into the garage and put the timer inside.

If you want to use the existing 120 volt cable, take the cover off the existing box, if the wires are not wire nut, or screw connected, cut them as close as you can and use the old cord for the new box. As long as the box is waterproof and the splice is inside, you should be golden. Problem is, if you don't want to be in the garage how do you plan to kill the power if it is not an outside panel.

I guess I can short the panel and trip a breaker if needed.  Hadn't thought that far. Good catch.

The new boxes have the cord soldered in place.  So I have to splice in the new cable or just plug it in

Would think twice about shorting someone's panel.... Garage circuit could have a fridge or freezer on it...

To do it right you would want to unsolder the connections inside the box and solder the old cord to the new box. I'm not sure you can solder live wires.

I believe NEC would require any splice to be in an enclosure. At least on structural wiring. Not sure about things plugged in.

Might want to rethink just scheduling to get in the garages. You might be creating potential liability for yourself should something go wrong that you modified.

See now this is all why I posed this to the group.   I again hadn't thought about a fridge or something like on the same circuit.

As my first response to the rest on the HOA board I have just emailed and said to find a certified or insured person who we can pay and or hand the new sprinkler box to home owner Joe and he can install it him self.  It being attached to his home.   We assume responsibility and bought a brand new fancy pants box. They can at least install how they wish or call so and so to install if they wish.

Washed my hand of it

Good call.  Remember that no good deed goes unpunished in society today.  Sad state of affairs.  I would hate to get sued for trying to help someone.

Not a builder or electrition, but I know running 120ac through a hole in the wall is a no no. LV OK, but not AC 110/220.

If the houses have an outside panel, just reset it. Besides, if they had a garage opener that wouldn't work either and then they'd really be mad!! No letty in and no cold beer!!!
