Hey has anyone looked at these trucks?
The new ones?
6.4 Hemi, 4.10's with lockers front and back
Disconnecting sway bars
2" lift over std 2500
11.5 AAM out back and 9.25 AAM up front
Solid axles at both ends
Linked up coil spring suspension on either end
Hill descent mode
33" aggressive tires on 17 X 8 forged wheels
12,000 Lb. Warn Winch
And available in zero option Tradesman then a mid level, and also a chromed up leather butt warmin' model
Looks like a serious truck by my rekoning
-
Saw one, liked it, wish it had the Cummins. Regardless WAYY more on the sticker than I need to look at. ;D
-
I really like them and would consider it for the wife's next ride if it had a diesel option. She wants a Ram. She is still mad at me for talking her into getting a car instead of another truck 4 years ago. Anyway, I know the heavier front end would hurt the spring rates, flex, and off-road ability some, but if it had a diesel I would probably buy her one.
-
Test drove a quad cab a month ago, hard to beat for the price. Ash has been buying Dodges for last year or better only, Ford and GM are over priced........
-
I hear the part of no Cummins, but it also has the no cummins price!
I found one locally that is a no option truck that is out the door for $43K!!
$43K for a Power Wagon. So I save $8,000 forgoing the oil burner
So $8000 would buy About 3,400 gallons which at 13 MPG would get me 44,200 miles
Which, if I drive around 15,000 miles a year, would have me driving for free essentially until November of 2018.
That's 3 years of fuel I could buy with the 8K I saved, and the gasser won't need all this super expensive DEF delete, EGR removal and the $1,000 programs to make it all work.
So, by my reasoning, it makes sense over everything except for an old 12 valve or similar old school diesel.
Unless I'm using flawed reasoning, this Power Wagon makes sense
-
I was contacted by a Federal Wildlife ranger on my brother's deer hunt, driving one of those newer ones. He LOVES it. Beats the heck out of it all day every day, and already has 133,000 miles with no issues. He started talking trash about the Chevys they had prior to the Dodges, and how they would beat the ifs out of them, but I had to point out that the Chevys were 1/2 tons......kinda like comparing a tricycle to a Big Red atv.......well, kinda. lol
-
So, I find myself interested in this truck
Out looking a bit, none near me though
There is a low cost Tradesman selling for $43K but has no options
So I'm wondering on the wisdom of getting a stripper vs a more optioned truck. Options normally means useless bling which I don't like, but also gets me 9 speakers which is necessary to push sound into my heavily scarred eardrums. Also nicer truck has butt warmers, and manly as I indeed am, I like girly man butt warmers. I think better trim gets power seats as well, but I could live w/o that for sure. I also like carpet, but the rubber floor matt is def man cave pretty!
Opinions??
-
I'm a sucker for options... especially heated leather seats.
-
You have all those fancy things in Cmax. I'd get the Dodge stripped, that way at the farm, you don't have to worry as much about trashing it. Every time i head for the hills in my Jimmy, I roll the windows down to smell the pines. Next thing I know, the rain drops are landin' right in the window/door lock/power mirror/heated seat/death ray/coffee maker switches.....I hate that!
-
And if you think a few rain drops are bad try it up here.....
-
One vote for butt warmers
One vote for a stripper
STR: 1
BW: 1

I started reading this thread from Dons last comment and thought this was a completely different kind of vote! Ha!
I like the PW for sure. I do think the whole diesel v. Gasser depends on how many miles you drive and how long you'll keep it. That same math ($8K savings) works in favor of a diesel if you plan to drive it for a long time. Granted they don't offer the diesel in the PW so it may be a moot point. But if you get 2x the mileage (my buddy has a new quad cab long bed Cummins powered Tradesman and gets 20 mpg commuting). His old 360 quad cab got 10. So even with the extra $0.40 or so for fuel he is ahead of the game as long as he keeps it for 100,000 miles he is ahead on the diesel. (You save about $0.08 per mike with the diesel so have to drive 100K miles to offset the $8K in additional cost). If you look to trade it in before then then the gasser makes more sense.
I'm a fan of creature comforts too....even though I know they add more stuff that can break....
-
...and I'm the only one that votes for the stripper. Figures. lol
-
I think that makes it
BW: 2
STPR: 1

Wuss.
manual windows, stick shift, no a/c
-
Well then Wuss I am, I suppose, cause I want AC, electric windows and locks, and a butt warmer...minimum!
-
I guess you've earned it

You can add heated and cooled seats aftermarket. But shouldn't you figure out the Toureg situation, then move on to PW?

The Toureg is an easy fix

Well that escalated quickly... :)
I wouldn't have thought 30 lbs would have made that big of mess.
But I suppose, the bigger the pail...the bigger the bang.
I'll add in a vote for the butt warmers as well.
Guess I'm a wuss too. Beat up broken and appreciative of the option.

Interesting development with respect to the Toureg
First of all, I gave it to the Frau
You heard of the VW/EPA thing I assume.
Well it was just announced that my Toureg is also on the list of vehicles that VW monkeyed with. Figures...It's no doubt the reason it runs so strong. So it has factory installed non functional emissions.
That's a good thing because it really does run well
Bad thing because when trade in time rolls around it will have the stigma of being one of the dreaded anti tree hugger, planet killin' machines. I know, I know, that increases its value amongst we rednecks, but the hippies all hate it now. They now regard it in the same light as George Bush.
So, I was contacted by a law firm who is planning to take VW to the cleaners, and now VW is coming out with a subsidiary program and a buy back. I'll take no less than a buy back on my terms.
After that I think I'll get a Mercedes SUV for her and well, I'm still truckin'
I honestly don't need another truck, I just like em'
A more practical vehicle would be one of those Duramax Colorado's or a Tacoma sized run about but here's the thing
We can all pile in the Toureg to go to church (If momma actually gets ready on time). And when I want to go "Up Town" with my dazzling lady, well, throw a wash job and some armor all on the Toureg and I'm stylin' with the big dogs!
The rest of the time I normally drive the LTZ but I always cast an eye toward pushing that truck down the road toward a SAS and maybe even a Cummins.
A near stock PW seems like it would make for a nice "Don-Size" driver. Change out a few parts here and there and by golly, I'd be C&C (cool and current).
So there you have my excuse, err, I mean reason for looking at that War wagon, err, power wagon.
-
I have always really liked the power wagon. I remember seeing the pre-production model at the Chicago auto show where they had a demo unit running circles on a course with a significant 3 wheeled frame flexing section. The sales pitch was that the truck was built rigid enough to easily open all the doors while one wheel was off the ground. Plus with the off road options, it seemed like they were pretty serious about it.
But of course like many have commented, I wish the diesel was an option. Still as a daily driver, the gas engine has some pros. Most notably for me is that it warms up faster in cold weather.
Don to your point about using the $8,000 in savings to cover fuel costs. That's not entirely accurate unless you plan to own the truck forever (for you might be reality). For the average buyer, spending money on a diesel is more about just tying the money up while owning the truck rather than losing the money. $8,000 add for the diesel engine new is still close to that in the used market when the time comes to sell it. So if you drive it for 3 years and sell it, you get almost all of that additional money back anyway.
-
You're right! Good point
I'll beat myself shortly, and repent!
-
Stripped, add better than stock optioned parts as needed. Tate needs to sell parts to stay in business...... ;) Plus his parts are better than OEM anyhow.
-
Shawn, But he doesn't sell butt warmers!
-
Don. I picked up a nice pre owned GL320 for the Frau. Diesel and 7500 towing capacity. 7 passenger for real.

That is nice. Miss Kathy would love one of those

Sweet ride TRN. Good for ya! She will enjoy that.
-
I know it will cost me some repairs by the time it's all said and done But since she picked that over the new Lexus LX 570 I'm ahead by a country mile.

Her smile looks genuine. Happy wife, happy.....Tex!
I would've picked the 570 hehe
-
Lol. Yeah. At this point in my life a 90k depreciating asset doesn't seem real smart. I did get all the maintenance completed to get it up to a baseline. Just have to do the coolant and belt.

TRN the good thing about buying a used but quality vehicle is the fastest amount of depreciation is already behind you. That curve flattens dramatically after the first year or 3 so your avg cost is less up front and if you sell it you'll get a lot more back than the owner who buys new. At the same time if you drive it into the ground like I do you'll have a heap to donate to charity and get a tax deduction that exceeds what you could sell it for.

Very true Wilbur. And add to that two daughters that will be driving in the next 4 years or so and I need something to hand down....and they ain't getting either of my trucks....
-
My daughters received, in order, a 2001 Accord, 2000 explorer (twins...they got in trouble drinking and I sold both vehicles). When they proved trustworthy, I then got them a 2000 Neon and a 99 camry. The neon was totaled and replaced with a 2003 grand am. The next youngest got a 95 buick. It was traded for a 91 forerunner (she still has), and the youngest received a nice 2000 s10 stepside. I also have a spare 97 camry (nice 94k mile car) in case one of the fleet goes down.
No where on this list is a $30k European suv. :poketex
-
Well, Kenneth. The first one gets to drive a 2005 Honda Odyssey with 100K on it. If she doesn't get in trouble or wreck it for two years, she can have momma's SUV, which I only paid $23K for. In 6 years it will be worth about $0. :rasberry
My youngest keeps telling me she wants my 2001 Duramax....not happening, especially with the tuna and 12inch lift...
-
At least you have one that can appreciate a truck. Mine just give me crap for killing the planet.

AAM CHY05175301AA 10.5" diff in the rear AAM CHY05175278AA 9.25 front in the Power Wagon. nothing wrong with the 10.5" in the rear, but limited on traction options outside of electric and Torsen, and gear ratio availability along with higher costs of parts just begs for the 11.5 transplant, which w/ standardized 8 lug bolt pattern and width being similar if not equal is an easy endeavor. I have not heard many complaints from owners that weren't flogging their vehicles, but big tires and high HP numbers do tend to equal damage to the rear locker.
-
Tate, old guy has a cold rear. Work on that please...... ???

Tate,
Check your sources my friend
For 2016 and maybe 2015, they upgraded to the 11.5AAM for the rear

I'll take that correction. I did not thoroughly read the initial post and assumed we were discussing 03-06 power wagons. I'll quietly go back to reading now. :-[
