I'm late getting to this party...

I've always lusted after this one

The DPMS AP4

This gun is selling for $1339 on line where I looked

You can find the AP4 barrels and etc online, and assemble it yourself. It'll be cheaper than buying a completed one off the rack. I know you'd end up changing the buttstock (like you mentioned), but I also know you'd end up changing the foregrip, so no point buying something you won't use.

I still like this best:

Yes. The EBR stock adds weight, but it is nice.

This is one of my AR-10s.  Noveske with a Nightforce F1.  You can absolutely OWN everything within 700 meters with this gun.

Yep, I'm still liking it. Scope stats?

I can not comment on this, other than that was never verified!

Never heard of it either.

They put Armor at Benning, a couple, 3 years ago roughly. There's also a WTU at Knox, in addition to what Nate said, and I think that's it.

2453
With this in mind, what is the most bang for the buck AR-10 out there?  Rock River?

http://www.rockriverarms.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=category.display&category_id=607

Not a bad rifle.

There are two mag patterns, Armalite and DPMS.  Go with the Armalite version and unless you are wanting 1MOA accuracy or better, then what ever you find cheapest.  They are all within mil spec and will get the job done.  Just remember to disassemble and stake the butt tube and bolt carrier.  Stay away from piston driven crap.  It's marketing hype (IMO, and yes I will probably get crap for that)

Nothing wrong with either one, however you'll find more of a selection of parts in the DPMS pattern rifles than Armalite. Either one of those rifles will function, all depends on how much you are willing to spend.

Hard Core!

XJ's rust allows it to blend in with the other rusty, worn out, beat up vehicles that there is an extensive amount of.

Bobby likes the high ground that looks flat but plenty of rolls.

Yes and no.

I Like it!

1. So often an infantry company, guys like Blaine and Bobby would get tagged with guarding the aircraft.

2. Well to my knowledge just about every training exercise I was ever on, some "Enemy" infantry insurgent types would sneak in and waste a few of our valuable aircraft. No matter what we did, even GSR (Ground surveillance radar) and barbed wire, and lights, and night vision and prayers prayed over the mess sergeants SOS and bacon. Nossir, we never got away without some Bobby lookin knuckle-dragger comin' in and messin with our beauty sleep and hot tub operations!

3. Sorry Bobby, but really, getting called a knuckle dragger by an aviator is really just a badge of honor in your world, true?

1. Usually with no sleep.

2. We'll find a way in, especially if some aviators' happen to talk some smack. Or there's hot coffee/snacks somewhere.

3. It ranks up there.

Seriously, C-Max does get stretched a lot down there, you can hear it in the creaking of the suspension. I found the most extreme exercise is approaching the driveway on an angle going uphill, dropping a wheel in the 2 foot deep two track, then continuing over the down side which scrapes the bottom of the truck while hanging a tire in the air.

Lay of the land comment: I know you see it with the same eyes as I do. As a grunt, you'd like a lot about the site I have selected. I am looking forward to having you do a walk about there and sharing your thoughts. Bottom line is it will be hard to sneak up on, and I am going to do a lot of unnecessary tree removal there to really open up my visibility in all directions. I will have a minimum of 100 meters open ground in all directions and be able to see 400-500 in several directions. The high speed avenue of approach is not high speed. Very channelized and restricted. Only one way in by vehicle, and that will be heard for some time as engines have to strain in places against the terrain. Just over the hill the drop-off is so steep that it is dangerous. Lots of natural cover (gulley's) to transit...you'd like it!

I'll let you know when I'm travelling through the area, or actually next time I'm heading down South will be for 9 days, so I"ll be able to detour and visit.

I can report that this bag system worked well. It features a gortex, woodland cammo outer cover, followed by a black nylon middle medium bag and an OD green down inner bag. We experienced high 30's and kept the tent flap open to reduce moisture and I stayed warm all night. I did not like opening all those zippers for my 0200 trip outside to talk to a man about a horse, but I managed to fumble through it. The bag packs down small and is pretty light

The gortex cover, patrol bag (green one) and a woobie are all one needs to successfully and comfortably sleep in most conditions. The black one is nice when it drops below 30s. Those tags are for those 2LTs who don't yet trust themselves to not use an official manual to open a sleeping bag.

I do NOT recommend using just the gortex...when it rains and drops the temp real low. It also doesn't work when you end up sleeping in a puddle, however it is marginally better than nothing at all.

I do like that lay of that land. And did anyone else see the EXTREME angles that CMax was subjected to?!

I've used Petzel (fore) headlights since 05'

For operators I'd consider a "lip-Light" like we aviators use. It attaches to the outside of the mic boom and is momentarily turned on and off by pushing on the mic with your lip.

Another cool light is a finger light. Can Velcro around your finger or in some cases are sewn into the tips of Nomex gloves, which are darned nice shooting and scootin' gloves

Nice write-up Bobby!

I had one of those finger lights. It was ok, but I kept forgetting I had it, or it kept slipping off.

You have a chart to show a way for an idiot to figure out the amount of twisties in his current configuration? 2 guess's as to whom that might be.

Lol, have idiot turn barrel over, twist rate usually stamped under the barrel, midway down towards muzzle.

this is for our brother who lives in the land of cheese.

Coincidence, I'm having pork loin with my parents tonight as well. Bought a couple big ones, and cut them into smaller chunks, then liberally seasoned them and vacuum sealed them and put them in the freezer.

i think he told me that he hated me last week and wished he could have been close enough to have some BBQ, so i figured i would just give him another reason to cuss me out just for GP!

 ;D

I don't believe it was concerning food! I just got back from a week "vacation" to southern Mississippi so I'll post up a recipe my cousin gave me for Cheesy Chicken Spaghetti when I catch up on my sleep, or more realistically, when I find it in my pack.

Concerning the aforementioned hate, have you stopped by the games?

OK, I found a neat site www.mytopo.com  You can get custom made maps any way you want them, fully laminated and rolled etc etc.

Would you order maps in lat/lon or UTM/MGRS?  I understand some of the differences (and which one the military uses) but which is more common/useful?

In other words if you were ordering maps, which system would you order and why?

Bobby in for the technical save! thank you sir! I prefer this as my weapon light now buddy. I dont think Ill change again. Streamlight makes great products though. I wish surefire would get on the strobe bandwagon. A strobing light is uber versatile not only for discombobulating degenerates but even dogs hate it. I was out on a run the other night and had my protac 1L by streamlight in hand. It's about 110 lumen EDC style light. One of my neighbors guard dogs was unsecure without a commander and came out to visit me and have some lunch. I would hate to ruin anyones guard dog for doing his job and my force continuum consisted of flash light, mini expandable baton, and glock 19... I strobed my little light at him and he wasn't having any... funny thing is, I cant decide whether or not to call my neighbor and tell him I found cujo's off switch or just keep it to myself! I think I'll keep it to myself!

No problem. I want one, I will get one, just a matter of time I suppose. My 2nd GSD, was all black except for a black spot on his chest. If he came running at you at night, you didn't hear or know where he was until he decided to stop all forward movement by impacting you, usually at the legs or hip level. The one I got now, well with his feet you hear him coming LONG before you see him.

1.Can I ask a dumb question about using Night Vision scope since I have never been around them?

2.Why do they have the eye cup on them like a video camera? If you had it on a 308 cal and your eye was that close, wouldn't you pop your eye?

3.Thanks for letting the noob ask questions!  ::)

1. No such thing as a dumb question.

2. Sometimes that rubber piece, wakes them up out of "stand-by mode" when you push your head forward into the rubber eyepiece, other times its just to keep the light that the optic emits from being seen by those you don't want seeing it. Usually, its just to keep extraneous light from getting in when you're using it. No it won't pop your eye, common thought, but it won't.

3. Everyone starts out that way at something right??  ;D

I dont know much about terminology as far as "flood" or "throw"

Flood : In an enclosed area how much will the light allow one to see objects of interest to the sides of the focused light spot, WITHOUT focusing the light directly at the aforementioned items.

Throw : How FAR it will throw light.

But thank you for the KIGS level brief of the M600. I was looking at one. And as someone who has used Streamlight and now Surefire, which is your preferred? Or are you like me and can/will make it work with whatever you get your hands on?

Looking at a clip on NV that I can use with anything or in hand.

You are not even allowed to have a NV scope here in Kali, so a clip on should fill the void.

Looking at something like this;

http://armasightnightvision.net/product/co-mr-2/

Depending on what you wish to use it for, it should be ok. Seeing if someone is in your yard sure. It'd be useful out camping or whatnot, but I'm not too sure about what they consider "middle distance".
