Bobby,
Those doors are gone...that's my bet. Saw the bubbles which is only a small part of the real story
Best plan is to find used doors in a junkyard that have no rust, then do the interior in a good undercoating and paint the outside with whatever.

But I'd pull the interior panel and take a look at what is going on inside.

That's part of the plan. I've checked the doors at the JY, but they are smashed/dented/or worse. All else fails, I might just pull my doors, strip the paint, fix them up, and have my sister and brother in law wrap XJ in matte black wrap.

They are real nice. I have no problem picking up the dots in any light, though I've only practiced in no/low light, not live shooting. Yes they're night sights, the tritium is actually made by Trijicon even though they're Ameriglo sights.

When funds allow, i'm going to convert both my Springfields over to the Heinie Straight Eight (2 dot) night sights as well. Unless Ameriglo puts out versions for the XD platform when i finally get to it.

My Sig 1911 and Sig P238 have Novak night sights, but they're safe queens so no use in monkeying with them  ;)

Nice

This isn't really part of my workout (of which I've been slacking on for 2 weeks).

According to the VA, 22 Vets commit suicide everyday for various reasons. That's 1 every 65 minutes. Which is an unaccceptable number to me. I'm part of a military charity called H.O.O.A.H. (Helping Out Our American Heroes). The Wisconsin chapter, for the last 2 years, on Veteran's Day, does a ruck march to raise awareness to this problem. We raise donations and ruck 22 miles.

It took about 6 hrs 35 mins to do the march. I was walking with a short girl, so I modified my pace. Last year my pack weighed 38 lbs, this year they set the weight at 22lbs in memory of the Vets. I believe we had around 90-100 people rucking, some were just walk ups. Some have never even attempted to ruck, let alone that distance, so that was kind of cool.

Mmm. Good ole Wisconsin cheese!
The oatmeal packs look like they should be a great addition to the kit bag.

Looks good Bobby.  :)

Best part about that cheese is the place I bought it from makes cheese everyday, so I can go grab FRESH cheese curds (Nate I heard your stomach growl from here). You can also send boxes of cheese, which reminds me I have to send my cousin one in Mississippi.

I know, it does... Bad lighting. It's the OD one though. Yeah, nice shooter. I'd shot my buddy's gen 3 before this and really liked the system. Hated the sights, so switched out to Ameriglo 2-dot. Will switch over my Springfields to the 2-dot as well. Predominantly XD platform before this, and have decided that I'll stay Springfield for 45 and run Glocks for 9mm. But I am a huge fan of this G19. Carries like a dream in my Crossbreed SuperTuck, just a dandy.

Wanna post a pic of the sight picture (as best you can) with the 2 dots when you mount them?

Bear has grown into one handsome boy!  Had a '94 like that, fun vehicle, but tippy when elevated much.  Great motor with plenty of power for its size and good mileage for a 6 cyl.  Looking forward to seeing it all transform!

Thanks, yea Bear has turned into an attention grabber. People think he's older than he is, until either Mom or I tell him he isn't even a year old yet. I'm definitely not going past 3" lift, just need something mild, without getting into tippy territory, seen too many of those around here. As for MPGs, best tank was 22 mpg, averages 18, but its a bit lower with the winter fuel.

Bobby, I've had a couple come in with cracks by the steering gear box....is that the stiffeners on your list? if not, maybe look into something for the gear box. I just used plate I had, but I'm sure they make something specific for them.

Unibody stiffner:
http://www.ruffstuffspecialties.com/catalog/XJRAIL.html

I'm planning on replacing the steering box and master cylinder with one from a Durango. I will also add in steering box braces, when I can find some online.

I was working out this morning at the gym on the elicptical where your mind turns to mush is you don't engage it.
For some reason I was thinking about Bobby's build

Those rocker panels are terrible, and they are a part of that weak unit body.

That's when I had my idea.

Cut off the whole rocker panel front to back. Leave the outward face of the "Frame" piece. Get a section of 2 X 4 X .125" rectangle steel and weld it in there so that it protrudes past the door bottoms.

You just fixed the rust, added a real frame, built in rock rails, and added a step.

You could cover the top with no-slip and have a tall step, or cut it out to lower the step slightly, or forget about a stop altogether.

You could bevel the front and back to match wheel well contours.

Not that is a good idea!

I actually had thought about adding in rectangular tubing. Most people who've done it recommend 2x4 or 2x6. But I can never find any when I'm out in shopping mode. So when I saw the rockers, I jumped. However, I'm still looking for tubing. I did plan on covering the entire lower quarter of the doors, and under and around the rockers in Herculiner.

Was thinking while I was typing earlier today...If I only had a decent revenue stream from this site, and the farm was in good enough shape, I'd offer you rent free livin' down there to watch over the place and work there a couple days a week.

But not there yet, and besides that farm isn't local to anything except trees, and more trees!

That's my dream if I ever win the lottery, become an oil baron or just get lucky enough to own a bunch of land surrounded by trees somewhere out in the countryside.

Welcome....oh boy, now we have 2 Nates!

Old Nate and New Nate?

2768

This thing will have plenty of torque to move mountains with any gear. The 3.54 will get the best mileage, and the 4.10 will run best at crawl speeds off road in rough situations

Staying 3.54 makes the most sense, but adding a traction device like the new air locker Randys supplied for the other Dana 60 housing I won. But that one is again earmarked for duty in the Big Chevy

I'd stay 3.54 until you get D2 more finished than in progress. Re-evaluate and re-engage your needs/requirements at that time. Do it once, and be done with it.

But then again, I"m not doing the work, I'm just reading the updates.

Good point, however, I need to have some skills to help in the job hunt that will invariably occur.

2771
As for re-gearing....
What will be the most efficient (both cost effective/power useage)
What is the end result for D2 going to be? (tire size/extra weight added)
Which gear ratio will work best for some grunt when you need it, yet good for everyday use?

Sorry dude...grunt/pilot thing...

OK Love it

First suggestion: Move down near me so I can get some sparks applied to that mess and get some real metal on it!

Let's make that mod #1

I've been told that before, by multiple people, on different occasions.

As for Bear, yea he is an attention getter, he's pretty popular with, well anyone who sees him.

Well, assuming XJ survives another winter, and makes it to Mississippi for my cousins wedding next June, I'll more than likely stop by. As for moving down yonder, I gotta get through EMT, then hopefully Paramedic, Firefighter and Police Academy before I look into new jobs markets.

Now before all of you start thinking I'm neglecting poor XJ, don't worry I'm not. I'm buying parts as my wallet allows, and if I happen to see them on Craiglist, the local pick n' pull, O'Reilly Auto or the intewebz. However with winter coming up the pick n pull will get harder and harder to get into and search around.

« on: November 09, 2014, 09:42:26 PM »
This is a pseudo-build/maintenance combo. I bought XJ last year in November, and I really haven't done much to her except maintenance. I had an idea of what I'd like to do, and I'm still working towards it, just remember it isn't going to be as crazy as CMax, and definitely nowhere near as in-depth as D2.

I'm limited in what I'm able to do as it is strictly VERBOTEN to work on vehicles in my apartment complex so a lot of the more "complicated" or multiple step jobs will be done by a guy I work with. He works on vehicles on the side, so if it has to be welded or I'm unable to perform a task, he gets the job.

My end result for XJ would be to have a 3" lift with 31" tires.. Why only 3" w/31s? Well, I don't know of many places in Wisconsin to go off-roading or wheeling or whatever you wish to call it, and I'm more into the "let's go explore this trail.." type thing, so XJ is going to lean slightly to the expedition side of things. I also don't have the money/time/experience necessary to upgrade the axles, re-gear, add lockers, exo skeletons, and the other fun things for anything hardcore, so that pretty much figures into it as well.

SPECS:
1998 Jeep Cherokee Sport
I6 4.0
4sp auto AW-4
NP 231 transfer case
Axles: Dana 30, Chrysler 8.25
3.55 gear ratio
235/75/15 Duratracs
Worn out shocks, and sagging leaf springs.

So with out further ado:

Yea nice rust huh?

I LOVE the GoodYear DuraTracs:

Last winter with all the snow and ice we had, I had no trouble getting around, and I even drove through an unplowed lot where I work, with nice drifts and didn't use 4wd. I did, however, put it in 4Hi and 4Lo just to try them out and it was outstanding. So from here on out I'm always going to rock the Duratracs...

After the topic of vacuum bagging came up in another thread, I decided to give it a whirl. Here's what I made.... Breakfast packs!!

Ingredients

1/2 cup quick oats
Blue berries
Cranberries
Maple syrup, Cinnamon pecan granola
Brown sugar

At first, I just added the berries, by reaching over and grabbing a pack, however after 1 pack, I just mixed the berries together and scooped it out. That way you received a mix of berries. I also added slightly less than 1/2 teaspoon of brown sugar, who doesn't add it to oatmeal?? I saw a bag of granola at Wal Mart and decided to try it in the packs.

I sealed the berries, brown sugar or granola is their own vacuum bag, then vacuumed sealed that inside the bigger bag containing the oatmeal. I made these packs as a 1 servings, so a just for me, just to see how it'd turn out. It works so this upcoming weekend I'll give it a shot in using the rest of the oatmeal and granola and et al and making larger portions.

Ingredients:

End Results:

And just because I went cheese shopping...
Clockwise from top left : Fresh cheddar, Bacon & onion cheese, Swiss, Pepperjack

I've worn many boots,

These are/were my favorite boots when I was in the Army.
http://www.oakley.com/en/mens/footwear/military-boots/assault-boot-8-in-hw/product/11093/?skuCode=11093-889WC

They were basically beat up on every chance I got, which seemed to happen a lot. The soles were soft, but didn't fall apart fast, so they were quite durable. They really didn't have a break-in period, and only got more comfortable as they aged. They are very comfortable for LONG rucks or patrols, granted no matter how comfortable they are, your feet will generally hurt regardless.

These are what you'll find on my feet anytime I'm walking around, unless you catch me in the rare occasion of wearing my sandals or my Vibram 5 finger shoes.

http://www.merrell.com/US/en-US/Product.mvc.aspx/22764M/50084/Mens/Moab-Mid-Waterproof-Wide-Width?dimensions=0

Again, these aren't treated very nice, and they haven't let me down. They also didn't have a break in period. I bought them, walked out to the parking lot, and once I got in my Jeep, I put them on and they've been comfortable ever since. I can't speak for how comfortable they are on long distance movements, but on 11Nov, I will be participating in the 2nd annual Veterans' Suicide Awareness walk, the Vet based charity I'm part of, puts on. So I"ll post up a review of how they fare after that.

Unfortunately, you still have to deal with idiots even on private land sometimes.  I had to chase the same guy off of my land two times within a week a few years back.

Used to hunt on the farm my mom, aunts and uncles grew up on. But my uncle died and, as far as I know, the farm got sold. The local(ish) area I might hunt at, not many people use anymore. Used to be popular, but people got shot/shot at, so most stayed away. I'll have to go check the land out and see if it's worth it for next season.

I got thinking that after Bobby suggested I put a couple thousand rounds threw it getting comfortable with. I think what I might do is use the Wingmaster for duck hunting and put a 26" barrel on it, and put the high volume of training rounds through the 590.

It doesn't take long to swap out the barrels on the Wingmaster, so you can have the 26" for hunting and keep a 18.5-20" barrel for home defense. Once you get it, you can ruggedize the internals/safety and be set. Like Chief said, no need to have 2 types of shotguns if you can do it with one. That's less parts to spend money, less parts to keep track of and keep separate.
