Northern Lights
« on: November 16, 2014, 01:15:19 PM »
I know this is probably not the best spot for this, as it is not a CIEMR.

I'm just wanting to share some pics I have managed to capture.

These we taken out at our cabin last winter, with exception of the tree, which was a summer shot.

From one night in the past month, just before we froze up.
Last one is the 'boss' and our three hounds.

These are so cool.  I was working up around Thief River Falls MN several years back and was on my way to work at 4:30 am and I got to see them.  I didnt realize that's what they were until I got to work and got a few cups of coffee in me.  In my half awake state I thought I was just hallucinating or it was a glare off the windshield. :o

I lived in the upper peninsula of MI for 6 years and that is still the only time I've seen them.

Well just got back from a trip up north. I had one of the best shows I've seen ever one night. I need to sift through them and I'll pop a few more up.

Well I can speculate. We were manning a checkpoint and providing SAR for a dogsled race. Our primary comms were sat phones. They did not work so good, not at all on the eve of these pics, and very sporadic the next two days. So I'd assume there is a lot of energy envolved.

There is a huge storm underway today and into tonight.
Those in the mid to northern states may be able to see auroras tonight.

Here are a couple sites I watch regularly:
(Or Google aurora forecast)

sol24.net

www.gi.alaska.edu/AuroraForecast

These are the simple ones to read.
So if you have a clear sky this evening you may be in luck.

Well with summer (what summer for us) passed were getting dark again finally.
Much to my wife's dismay this habit will rekindle for the next few months.

Got a bit of this going on right now. As I sit squatted at our floatplane base. Bears roaming town and without my mossy. Oh well.

They're just camera screen shots. I'll go through them later and add any good ones.
Might as well use this technology when I have service. Lol.

And yes the sun has basically just set totally. The one without the plane was midnight or so last night.

Really beautiful! Thanks for sharing. I've seen them in northern Maine but not so beautiful. That's awesome. I love being outside on clear winter nights...below zero so you get that snow squeak. It's awesome. ....seeing that above you so clearly would be amazing.

That just centered me!

Summer is waning for you!

Still 90F here and I'm having to drink constantly out of my old garden hose to keep it going.

Thanks Bobby, and all.
Don, yes, summer is waning. We've had a bit of summer return this week, seeing near 80*.
Yeah, not really all that hot, but 80-90's is about it up here.
We've actually been real close to freezing a couple nights already.

Amazing!

But I recall the nights at Camp Paradise two summers ago in July up on Lake Superior. At night it got to hoodie climes around the bon fire

Well, you're stout, you can obviously handle it and you choose that, so best to ya, but I hope you get to enjoy the rest of, what, Fall???

Yes, Fall is in the air already, save for this warm up this week, the Birch, Poplar and Tamarack have started to turn.
This means only a couple things. Time for the shooting competition in Ottawa, Moose season, and some beautiful evenings at the cabin.
Then the impatient wait for freeze up.

It's been 80's and 90's this week here as well. But the tree's are also turning fast. Been in the low 40's a few times in the last few weeks and they are saying highs in the lower 70's this coming week.

I need to get the winch on Anvil, the Plow on Patch and start my winter preparations...just once I'd like to be ahead of the game LOL

Yes would be nice to be ahead of the game.
I was looking around the yard today thinking I need to get some of this put away.
That's where it stopped. Lol
Got power steering issues on both vehicles, and I'm off to a shootin competition for the next three weeks.
I hope fall sticks around for a while. Lots to do still.
