Clifton Gorge Day Trip

I didn't get any wheeling done today, but we did head out to a pretty cool state park in Ohio, Clifton Gorge park and nature preserve.

I was surprised to find such a unique geological feature in the flatlands between Dayton and Xenia, Ohio. But right there is a no-kidding rip-roaring gorge a hundred feet of more deep cutting right through the forest there.

Sorry for the picture orientation, my I-phone is not playing well with the forum again.

But this thing is literally straight down to a fast river that is doing a great job of cutting down into mother earth and the parent limestone there.

They have four trails in the Nature Preserve, and we did all of them. Some are easy and some a bit more challenging. Be in good cardio shape and have good knees and be fitted with some good hiking shoes for the up and down parts. A lot of the trail system is on bridges, walkways and the like that are built right into the landscape.

Man this sideways picture orientation is really bugging me!

On one of the trails is the actual Clifton falls, a small one but easily accessed.

The trail meanders for a half to 3/4 mile beyond the falls and links up with the state park part of the overall park. We stayed mostly at the preserve which prohibits travel off the trails.
We came upon what they call, "The Blue Hole," Which was formed by the glaciers of some time ago. It is quite deep and very peaceful feeling.

We both enjoyed the hike.

Should you decide to retrace our steps, I recommend driving a short distance to the artsy town of Yellow Springs. Named after a nearby sulfur spring, this town is 100% hippy out of the 60's. It has a tavern there, Ye old trail tavern, which has been in continuous operation since 1827. It is the oldest tavern in Ohio and is where you would stay the evening if you were westbound on the stagecoach.

Kat and I had a nice day rediscovering the joy of simple day trips.

Folks, sorry for the picture orientation. Apparently, it matters with respect to the orientation of this Apple phone. I can't figure out at the moment how to fix these. Maybe lie on your side or stand on your head, and I'll just switch to a real camera for future adventures.

It was, but Clifty falls was so much more. We plan for another visit next week to hike the lower trails which you couldn't get to from the trails on the rim except with a long rappel or a parachute.
