Well, we got a puppy. Family friends bred their yellow for the final time, and she's an outstanding dog, and previous litter produced great tempered, smart puppies. So here we go.
The this is Mack

He's going to be a big boy, pushing 100 lbs probably. His mama is over 90

Too cute, if I dare say it.
That was seven years ago for us, Chaka, she's still wound tight as a fiddle string.
Be careful with the "lap dog" status, our 70# puppy does it to this day...

Great addition there Kyle. Looks like a pretty tough customer already

Ha, roger that. He's not allowed on chairs or furniture. That was a one time deal, first day home :)

Pups are fun.....lotta work, but fun. Consistency is the key to training them - when working them, do things in threes and end on a high note. Hope he's not a digger with that sweet yard and lawn you've worked so hard on!
-
Thanks guys, we're excited. He's a handful!
Yeah, i'm trying to be very consistent. First thing I'm working with him, besides obviously house training and crate training, are recall training (come).
And.... dare i say.... he has a little voice in the back of his head saying "hey man... yeah. you... see that nice flowerbed over there? yeah? well, you should go tromp in there and dig a little. whataya say? it'll be fun". So, trying to nip that in the bud.

Love some chocolate lab puppy photos. Keep posting

Easy way to work on your recall command is to tie a length of say paracord to his collar when romping in the yard. When he's NOT running, and focused on something else, you give command knowing that he's going to hear it, give a tug at the same time the command is given and continue "reeling" him in until there and praise him lightly.
That light weight cord won't catch on much so he won't really know it's there much after awhile, yet gives you the ability to enforce gentle compliance with the command. This will also set the table for using a training collar down the road if you want to do advanced training and recall at distance; contact point is always the neck so stimulus, even with the light cord is the neck.

Nice addition to the family Dawg! I used to have a four on the floor rule that lasted for years and several dogs. Our current blonde lab doesn't have that rule for some reason... I'm getting old a soft I guess. So now she has destroyed a leather couch from laying on top of the back cushions... but hey.. I can always get a new couch. Man's best friend is forever.. or most time not long enough.
Enjoy!

Thanks for the tip! I'm all ears on suggestions from those more experienced than me!
We worked on leash training yesterday too. He of course attacked the leash when it was attached to his collar, not quite as bad from the harness.
We're going to the beach this weekend for the 4th, so I got a long lead (15') and will work on what you suggested

4 on the floor, I like that. Half the battle for us will be getting my parents to adhere to our rules too!

Beach will be too much stimulation to get anything constructive done formally so just have fun and keep him alive, have fun and work on "school" at home!

Mix up the training treats. With Cooper, the little kibble sized training bites worked fine until he saw something he cared more about. then bacon to the rescue.

The battle for me was getting my wife to follow the rules. She did not, which is shy the dog currently sleeps on the couch. At least the dog knows to only go on 1 of the 2 and only when the cover is on it. She also knows she is not allowed up stairs.
-
Wives are a problem. The other day mine was basically asking to get up in bed. Wonder what goes on when I'm out of town!
Right now just good company on the front porch enjoying the evening. (https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170628/2ee8301f9b41cdb09ab7519221807eb1.jpg)

Not a concern here. My wife is a seasoned drill instructor when it comes to K9 behavior expectations. Not on furniture, not in the bed, and not even in the kitchen.

Little bugger is growing like a weed. He's a good boy though, learning very fast

Good looking pup, grass danglin from his mouth is priceless....

We got lucky with our black lab, Fiona -- she's not a digger at all. :) She's a ding-dong though.
He will your little one's best friend :)

Hey, isn't grass legal in your state? I'd have him checked for glaucoma just to be safe.

That's a cuddly lookin thing!
-
Funny thing, he actually got really sick last week from what we suspect was a clump of grass clippings off the compost pile. Had to take him to the vet for all the checks and he was negative for everything. Next day his first crap was suuuuper green. I think the clump of grass blocked him up, and then ultimately passed

Super cuddly, right up to the point where he tries to bite your nose off. Puppy biting/teething phase is a real pain, but it's getting better little by little

Haven’t posted a picture of the beast in awhile. He’s 6 mos old now, and prob in the 65-70 lb range

Here he is snugglin up with mama and baby. He’s been great with the baby, has the protector instinct for sure.

He looks way to at ease in that recliner........

Yeah, and you can see all that tough talk earlier about 4 on the floor is for naught. Mama relented, and with the baby now, she felt bad that he wasn’t getting as much love lol. I do have to say tho, he knows it’s a treat... when he hops on the couch, he’s super calm and relaxed. It’s like he knows if he misbehaves he’ll lose the privilege

Right after I snapped the pic he asked me to get out of the way of the TV, and grab him a beer since while I was up

Our older golden who is 9 now used to jump up on the couch when I wasn’t around. Typically when I was away with business over a weekend. Even then she was never relaxed when up there and occasionally they would mess with her & put me on speaker phone......
-
Our Chaka, was a lap dog as a pup...
And still is...
She will hop up on the recliners with us, turn around so she can watch tv and lie between our legs. It's too funny really.
Mack is looking pretty happy and growing like a weed still!
