Got my air hose reel up over my future workbench. Got this baby on the northern tool savings event, 25 bucks. I wanted 1/4 line, since it'll predominantly be used for brad nailers and such. No use in having 3/8 for that... that's a separate reel, stay tuned (backordered)

Are you referring to the hydraulic ram pump don? I think that is best if used to do a trickle type filling of a gravity fed drip system. Cool concept tho

Hand Tools, Power Tools, Welders, etc / New Dewalt 12v Drill and Driver
« on: January 22, 2017, 07:51:19 PM »
Well I've been trying to narrow down a new set of drills for small/finish work. My 18v XRPs are absolute horses, but they're big and heavy. Getting into cabinets, overhead on a ladder, etc is suboptimal, so I decided to expand the stable and get a nice 12v set. I looked at the Boschs, Ridgids, and Milwaukees too, but they all had batteries in the grip, which made a rather girthy grip. I ended up gravitating back to my trusted Dewalts. My father in law has this same set and I love them. These will be a nice compliment to my 18v XRPs, and are significantly lighter.

Also organized my bits and drivers a bit, no pun intended. My countersinks were getting rattled and dinged, so I got another case just for them.

I ended up ordering a northern tool patton-style fan. i will build a box to house two 20x20" furnace filters. That's one of the key drivers here, is utilizing 'used' furnace filters from our house, so the WEN and others like it are out. Hopefully will get going on this project soon!

Hey, just curious if anyone has any experience with LED Lenser lights? Was looking at a few that look pretty decent.

I have like 8 of them. Look for them on Woot.com... daily deals site. I really like them to be honest with you. They're not big-name tac lights, but they work great, i have them in my center console in the truck, stashed in random places int he house, toolbox, RV, and in my backpack. I like that they use AAA batteries too, because i can stock a bunch of them because they're used in remote controls and stuff too. My favorite is the Tac Torch. Great balance of size and lumination. I paid 18 bucks for the Tac Torch on woot.

Give em a go!

Everywhere except work (against policy, persona non grata style), and where it's against the law (schools, govt buildings), and obviously where there not allowed and there is screening (sports stadiums, etc). I give a nice half smile when I see the signs at the theater, and even talked to our local police about legal ramifications of giving the same little smile to the "not allowed" signs at the state fairgrounds. Basically, if I'm not gonna land in jail if exposed, that's the decision criteria.

Also, I will say, I will disarm if I've had a couple drinks and decide to have "one more", even at home. At that point to me the decision is one or the other, not both.

Yeah, with pressure I'm sure 1/2 would be fine. I think I'm going to have to come off the meter instead of using the 1/4 psi 1/2" stub

Yeah i'm at 1" feeder, and it should have been 1 1/4" if they gave me more than that weiner little stub in the back. Should have been 3/4", with a 1 1/4" feeder to the house. Woulda been mo better, but my bad for not paying mo money and assuming the boneheads would assume i wanted to run more than a dang BBQ for a stub labeled "TO THE SHOP"

They probably increased the pressure. I was reading that you can get 6psi in commercial/high density applications from my gas provider. That's 24x the pressure of residential.

Well shhhheeeeeeeeet. Now I have a 1/2 stub that's absolutely worthless. I'll have to tap off the meter, which is another 25' away

Does anybody have any experience with gas lines? I'm trying to figure out if i have enough to run a 50k BTU gas furnace in the shop, given i only have 1/2" line stubbed at the house. Trying to read online and it's confusing the crap out of me.

Seriously one of the most f****d up things i've ever seen. Be warned.

268
I picked up the Dewalt 996 drill, couldn't find a 991. Got the compatible 1/4" impact driver as well

996 has a three speed trans and the 650 watt motor. But, came with 3 ah batteries, not the 5ah. I suppose I can add a 5ah bat to the collection in time. I'll just add all dewalt 20VDC tools from here on so the batteries will be compatible

I think you made a good buy. Nice that they make the "big" and "little" batteries too. Lithium Ion is the bees knees too from what i've read.

I'm eyeballing the bosch 12v kit, for smaller projects and finish work, as my 18v XRP NiCad batteries are monsters. But they'll drive 3" deck screws like nobody's business.

269
Dewalt 18v xrp is what I have. Extremely satisfied. Love em, they're workhorses, heavy duty. Sawzall will tear through a battery, but the drill and driver are money. Cordless circ saw is great too for small stuff. I just have the nicad batteries too.

Ha! That's great. I would love a place like that. I had a barber I went to religiously. He quick tho to work in a machine shop. His cousin took over and he's absolutely terrible. There are the fancy barbers around, but they want like 25 bucks for a cut. Rediculous. My barber was $11, cash only. 15-16 with tip.

Not a patton, but found this from Norther Tool... says it moves 2500 CFM... that's plenty i think. Or, just go on up to the 20" and really have plenty.

Would mount like this, but inverse, so the fan blew from the inside of the box outward

Corn lobby is involved too, I suspect.

Ethanol can be made much more effectively out of sugarcane, but we put import tariffs on that.... and all that sugar produced in Florida and Louisiana is required for pop and candy to keep us all fat

Of course, I could be wrong about it all. But I would be surprised if that had something to do with it. Bet norm has a more educated opinion on the matter

20x20 is what the house uses so I'll definitely be doing that... but I think I want a beefier fan than a box fan...

Will probably use MDF, glued and screwed.

Scented oil... like 89w90 or ATF? I like where you're going with this...

Figured this counts as tools...

So after spending a day in the shop building things, cutting plywood, 2x's, etc... i realized things got really dusty really fast. On my chop saw, i can rig up the shop vac, but circular saw... no dice.

So i want to design an air filtration system, using the same size furnace filters from the house. So when it's time to swap out the ones in the house, they will be then 'shop-worthy'. I think i'm going to first do a simple box, suspended from the ceiling, and then ultimately do a ducted system where the fan and filters are up in the attic to cut down on sound, and also get rid of the big box hanging from the ceiling.

Now the question i'm trying to solve at this point, is what to use as the fan. So far, i really like what the inline cetrifugal fans have to offer. They're mainly used and marketed for indoor grow operations, but hey, they move air.

Would like to get about 1000cfm, but there's a nice little blower that's 750cfm for $80 on amazon. Has 8" inlet/outlet, which seems like a hefty amount of volume.

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B019J979MY/ref=ox_sc_sfl_title_4?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=A18TGAB2SJ5GBJ

Would wire into a timer, 120v

Obviously, this is not a replacement for a 'dust control' system, a la central vac, which at some point down the road i will do. But for now, clearing up the air seems like something that will help the ole lungs in the meantime.

Have any of you guys done something like this? Lots of videos on youtube of people using furnace blowers, but i haven't found any cheap, and i do like the idea of round inlet and outlet so i could use circular ducting down the road when i tuck it up into the attic.

Firearms / Passed Guns and Their Stories
« on: December 29, 2016, 04:17:40 PM »
So we celebrate Christmas on my side of the family on Christmas Eve, always have, and always at my Grandparents house. It’s very special for Grampa to host. Well they’re getting up in age, and my grandma’s health is deteriorating rapidly. So as we finished up with opening packages, my Grampa stands up and says ‘well I have something to say’. He starts to get emotional, and says ‘we’ve been talking, and have agreed its time to do something we’ve been putting off for quite awhile.’ Of course, we’re all like WTH is going on!? And grampa walks into the back room. He comes out with a rifle. His 300 WinMag. And he starts to tell us that the time has come for him to pass along his hunting rifles, since he won’t be using them any longer, and he wants us to have them (myself, and my uncle, since my dad doesn’t shoot or hunt). The winmag goes to my Uncle. Next trip out, he brings his Remington 7400 30.06, and hands it to me. This is it here.

Next trip out, an old lever action 300 savage, to my uncle. Then, he comes out with his beloved Winchester 94, 30-30. At this point he’s bawling. He holds it out towards me, and says that his dad gave it to him when he was 12, which would have been 1943 I believe. Was really tore up about it, obviously it meant the world to him. We hugged and he cries for close to a minute. Absolutely gorgeous gun. Excellent condition. This is it here.

Next trip out, he is carrying a small revolver. He said it was his grandfathers. It’s a US Revolver Co 38, circa 1915-1920. He said when he was a boy, he always knew it was in the sewing table drawer. He then handed it to me.

So it was a really amazing moment, I knew of these guns, but it was surreal of him to give them away. Especially the 30.30, as I knew how much it meant to him. He said half a dozen times, ‘now you take good care of that.’

But there’s more to the story. The next morning, my wife and I packed up from my folk’s house, and were ready to hit the road to go spend Christmas Day with her side of the family. We’re just about to pull on the freeway, and my dad calls me. ‘Are you on the freeway yet?’, no I say. ‘Can you pull over real quick?’ he asks. So I do, and he tells me that grampa had just called him, frantic. He was having immense separation anxiety over the 30.30, was up all night, etc. He was ashamed to say, but he needed it back. So, I turned around and took it back to my dad, to give back to grampa. I told him, ‘dad, this is and will always be grampa’s rifle’. So, grampa has it back, but whenever he decides, I’ll take care of it, and it will always be in the family.

Thinking about it, I’m not sure if I’m connected like that to any of my guns, or any material thing like he is to that rifle… Probably the only one that I couldn’t ever part with is my other grampa’s Savage Model 24 I got it when he passed.

Anyway, thanks for reading. Wanted to tell that story, about some really cool old guns with lots of history.
