Well, not a vehicle but thought I would throw this in here since it comes to Maintenance.

I have a nice 2005 Eclipse 23ft (measures 24?) Toy Hauler that I got for a song a few years back. It was in great shape, even the roof which is EDM rubber an industry standard. They are supposed to last around 10 years with good maitenance which really just means keep it clean, wipe preservative on it and don't abuse it. Keeping it covered or parking indoors is a big plus. The roofs "wear or age" by the surface oxidizing to a fine powder over the years. Rub your hand over it and you will see!

Anyway mine is almost 10 years old and looked good last year I was up there to wipe it down and treat it. Then a few months ago I saw a mushroom growing both inside and outside on the right side above the awning. So I knocked it off and thought some water got in where the screw are for the awning. Saw nothing and promptly forgot about it. So here it is months later and I notice the wall is a little soft inside the electric bunk beds while I'm storing up some food and watching a movie with the kids (12 year old daughter had 10 girls over for her birthday and we needed out!!)

OK, so I remember the issue with the mushroom and check it out the next day and find 3-4 tears on the edge less than a 1/2 long and it is mushy on the edge. So out comes the knife and I cut the roof just a little in from the edge and find a MESS!!!!!!!!!

The OSB is soft or rotten for about 3 ft going in around 3 inches. SO out comes everything I can get at and leave her open to dry out. I find there are 2 crossmembers there which are a little rotten on the end. As I am cleaning it up I am figuring how to address this damage and keep the walk on roof solid.

It took 2 days of on-off cleaning-cutting and vacuuming until I got it to where I am happy. This also allowed it to dry out well since we were having 80f days while keeping it covered at night. Naturally we got rain just as I was ready to start the repair so it got covered in plastic and taped off for a couple days.

The repair will consist of replacing the OSB cut out now to 4"x48" and adding a 2x2 replacing the 1x2 edging that was stock. That will fill the end of the trusses that were trimmed off. I will layer 6oz FG cloth using epoxy resin (doesn't crack like polyester resin). The resin will act like a great glue and the cloth will add the strength lost on the trusses. Inside I braced the ceiling during the repair to keep things fairly level.

Over this area I will use a small EDM patch that overlaps at least 1 inch on the top and will go under the aluminum drip edge like the original roof. Then I will seal the edges with EDM sealant. Then I will recoat the entire roof that is supposed to give another 10 year life.

Great idea, plus you would be smog exempt in every state right off the bat!!

That 2500 would have the 9.5 front to. You may want to check the rear though as many of those came with a 14 bolt semi (9.25), not a 14 bolt full float (10.5).

13453
I am impressed Don. Tearing into that puppy good!

I do question painting before being done though as you are going to get it pretty messed up putting it together and AT fluid is known for removing paint.

Which manual is that? I did a quick search for Chrysler 47r without much luck. Oh, found a grid to. Just missed a new one for 60 but got a used one for 50 shipped.

13454
Sorry Don but we are greatly out numbered up here. Seattle votes count more than the rest of the state put together. Now, another school shooting while the left is pushing another gun issue to a vote. I just do not understand where they all have come from.

I think kali is to blame for alot of this, we are in the same boat.

I heard alot about 594 on NRA radio the other night. Another stupid law that only makes someone feel good.

The only way to stop a bad person with a gun, is a good person with a gun. That was even proved in Canada last week. (aren't most guns illegal up there?)

Then this stupid rampage in Sacramento, by an illegal alien who had been deported more than once, was a felon with weapons and had been stopped numerous times before he came to Cali to go nuts, killing 2 officers (which could just as easy been me a few months back)

I am glad to be out as I would not have taken firearms from regular folks. I probably would have been home protecting my own.

Hunkered down for now, but I will get out.

Doing lots of research now. Spending $$ on good panels and cobbling the rest. My panel will have LCD readouts when the whole system is up, looking at the Morningstar MTTP controllers.
I am looking at running the pool heater off season and the AC when its hot. With what on the grid runs here it will pay for itself soon enough. Plus having that backup peace of mind.

Well, I have just picked up 2500 watts in solar panels. That was just around 2k, about .85$ which is a fair price.

I will start a thread when this gets going. These all go on a shed out back for supplement my pool heater and AC. Just learning much of this as I go with inverters, grid-tie and off grid.

What I like is the grid tie setups where you just plug into the wall outlet and use your power first.

I like your idea with solar panels and such Don. Looking at adding a couple to my trailer now and just got 2k watts in panels for a grid tie system out back for the pool and AC. Will post he progress as I setup.

Guys, get a boat oil change pump to remove the oil,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

They are mostly a big hand pump but they make electrics too. FOr adding oil, lots of pump on bucket choices out there.

Oh, who the AMS Oil guy here? I need a couple bypass filters and don't feel like joining the club every other year to get a few filters.

I wonder if I can get a fumoto valve for the compressor...

It isn't a pressure valve I think.

As in the one on the oil pan of my Duramax, right?

I'd say don't use it...definitely not a pressure retention valve, although it might work for a time...

To replace the oil plug on the crankcase of the compressor.  It wouldn't be under any pressure.

That would work, but you only drain a couple times a year at most. As long as you can get to it why bother. Now an extension I can see as you never get that darn can under there in time

13466
Camo bike, shinny muffler, thumbs down.

BBQ paint, easy to repaint when scuffed. Works on gun parts, why not a hot muffler.

13467
It is not so much the paint you get but the primer. There is the Fusion paints made for plastic that work OK.

Then you have Bulldog primer made to use with any paint.

You need to paint the muffler,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

I am still up in the air on the floor plate. More rounds are better but $15 for 1 round?

Slide release, YES. The factory is way to small. Also a big fan of better sights.

I had the 23 mags in my 27 until I sold it and got the 23. They make nice sleeves for those but are a little sloppy. I have several non factory 30 rnd mags, but the KCIs are not drop free, but they work.

OK, see the ghost rocket on GB, does it just reduce pull?

Yeah, I have a thing about flashlights an have had really good luck with the imported stuff. I do think I had 1 switch go bad is it.

If you look you can find rail mounted light/laser combos for around $30. Again, not really high end but a great value.

The charger and batteries are always something to consider. Last batch of the batteries I got were 12 of the 123s for just $10. With the intellicharger you are pretty much set for any battery or power source.

Well, maybe it was a little longer than that. I do have an older Lowes ballcap with them built in and we had them at work too.

As much as I love the high dollar lights of which I have several I have been getting some "ULTRAFIRE" cree lights off ebay for some time now and they just seem to get better.

The ones I am using are rated at 300-500 lumen normally and one has a larger reflector that is rated at 1000, but I don't really see the diff. These run about $20 on ebay, use a single 3.7v 18650 Lithium battery. I have taken these camping several times and get about 2 hours from them on high. Most have 3 settings, high, low and strobe. Now the nice thing is many come with 2 batteries and a charger (110v) The batteries I get are rated at 5300ma and I keep several extra in the truck and they come with a small case that holds 2.

As for the light they put out, I would rate them with anything on the high end. Easily lighting up trees 500ft away.

There is also this nice little one called the S10. Its a little pricier at around $30, but had to try it. It uses a single CR123 cell and the light output is great. I think it is rated at 150 lumens. Obviously not on par with the Ultrafires but it does great when its dark, has 3 settings, a pocket clip and a magnet on the back that holds it solid.

Now put these all together with the Intellicharger I4 that sells for around $20-30 and you have a nice combo you can keep with you and charger on 12v DC and 110AC. Here is the 4 cell version charging 2 AA Nimh, 1 CR123 Lithium and a 18650 Lithium all at the same time. I keep the 2 cell in my truck.

The light picture is not the best at just 5 ft, but it was during the day on a white wall. Also sorry for the charger backdrop, it was handy vs all the wrenches with the drawer open.

13474
Did you add any heat shielding where you trimmed for the muffler? Looks like composite of some type.

Don't assume you are a crack shot. We all need to practice.

Practice on a silhouette, not a round target and always aim for center mass to stop the threat.

YOU NEVER FIRE ONE SHOT OR TRY TO "WOUND" YOUR TARGET.

Practice shooting as the gun is drawn (watch your hands), coming up and on target with sights. You may not get to "take aim".

I once got berated for firing 8 rounds at a guy with a shotgun during a simunitions class. I said the guy hadn't hit the ground yet so I kept shooting, they said OK,,,,,,,,,,,

Practice with your "off hand", you never know when you will need it.

Now, most of this is for a person who has never had formal training, not us DOTs.

I have a 24ft TH that is stocked quite well, cept for the fresh stuff.

Meat could be on the run as veggies and fruit I have built up well in cans right now.

It has 150gal water and I have about ten 30 gal and a 55 gal drum that can be filled fast, plus a pool if at home.

I am working on several coolers now with 1 month food in each. Easy to move and separate for stash reasons. Lots of cans, noodles and freeze dried.

Love the Glocks also. I have the 23 and just obtained my service 22, both are 40sw for those who don't know.

I have a 1911 Commander, Springfield XDS and a Mac10 all in 45ACP. Only issue with the 45 is price and accuracy suffers with heavy rounds. 220's JHP are great for stopping, but 185s are more accurate. That is the same as the 40sw, 185grain JHP.

We used to carry the SW 4006. I remember the thumbs up clearing, what a pain. It broke on the range (ejection pin) but mine still fired til broken down. It was also never very accurate.

As for 9mm I have seen what it doesn't do when the shot is not placed well (sure you guys have seen more). Nice little hole but it just doesn't have meat of a 180-200 grain bullet.

I also have several 30 round drop free mags for them (don't get KCI) nice is all the glocks of the same caliber can use the same mags and some even have a sleeve for normal carry.

I also have one of these, just 3.5 lbs and uses a 22 magazine; http://www.keltecweapons.com/our-guns/sub-2000/rifle/

Now this is a go case!!

I had thought about the wind generators, but not converting a gen and doing it myself. As you I have a good understanding of how propellers work and they work 24hrs a day.

Something like that on a mast for the trailer along with a panel or 2 and you could self sustain you power needs for some time.

Tech/Electronics / Power when the switch doesn't work.
« on: October 03, 2014, 11:47:58 AM »
Ok, so we have a little SHTF or just a friendly EMP or even just that prolonged blackout after whatever.

So how do you keep your food fresh, batteries charged or even listen to the radio. Now depending on if you prep at all, this may not concern you, sure the Gov will fix it, right?
How is that working for you now?

Anyway power will be like gold when there is none, so plan to have some. You need to generate something, being you have your kid peddle a generator, have a real generator or maybe a small solar setup.

I have 2 generators, 1 in a trailer with lots of gas and a couple deep cycle batteries, but gas does not last forever. I also have a 5k backup sitting in the shed that has served me well a couple times. But then again we are talking at the most maybe 2 weeks of fuel if run say 1-2 hrs a day. Now if you have diesel, that time may double and you can burn alot more than just diesel most of the time.

Some of you may have solar on the house, great. If all you do is use it and sell back, you are selling your self short. You need to have storage for that juice you make in the form of batteries and for the price it is hard to beat a good ol golf cart 6v battery. 4 of these would probably get you through a night easy. Sure you can get sealed batteries with no maintenance but they are pricey and don't really last longer.

I have played with solar some (hey it is cool) and am now looking at a 1-2kwh unit right now. That is as simple as 4-8 panels on a shed out back which will run my pool and some AC in the summer. Charge a few batteries and then you can use that converter at night for lights, radio and the fridge.

If something does happen there will be batteries everywhere as cars don't get used when gas goes away, so don't threat over how much storage you have, just know you can have it.

Remember too that if you have lights on when no one else does for any period of time, you may become a target. If you have light, you may have food, ammo or whatever.

What do you have, thoughts?

Well as much for food as other things. It is for use now mostly.

I have zip bags and use the *** out of them, but the compactness of vacuuming adds ridigity too.

As for power, that is something for another forum, but I think everyone needs some back if even just for charging batteries.

I think most of us are in the same frame of mind here. If a gun is out, play time is over.

CS in 12g, never "used" them but they "may come in handy (wink)

Nice thing with #6 or 7 is if they are close enough it will do the job just fine.

If you have fewer slugs or reaching out ammo, just slightly cut around just above the lower metal case. It will separate when fired and carry the whole mess out farther before it opens up, viola, you have a 00 power in a #6 round.

I lost a nice D ring off my hitch about a month ago. Pin was in, but I missed the hole (quiet). It was a nice forged unit with a 1 inch D ring too.

As to slightly down, think about under load. When you are pulling the torque applied will lift the front a little.

My trailer has a GVW of 11k and I only had a 10k ball setup, since then upgraded to 15k. I get a little sway and am looking at a load leveler hitch.
