Bikes Motorcycles, S x S's, Tractors, and Mowers / AV Gas
« on: October 24, 2020, 11:19:07 PM »
Anyone have experience running this stuff? Other than hearing old timer stories about running it in super stocks, I have zero experience with it.

Here's where I'm headed:
I'm completely fed up with ethanol. It just doesn't hold up to our summers. I'm just going around in circles trying to keep up with everything, rebuilding carbs, cleaning tanks, injectors, etc. I suppose if I sold off all the toys and tools it would be easier, but kinda hate to do that. I haven't had great results from Stabil, and inconsistent results from Seafoam...if and when I remember to use it.
It's bad enough dealing with customer cars with these issues, so I want to switch it up on at least some of my stuff.

First I looked for non-ethanol fuel near me. The nearest non-race pump gas is 100 miles away, and only 87 octane. (I got this info from the website https://www.pure-gas.org/ which I'm pretty sure Charles recommended a long while back). Other, closer stations sell race fuel (94-110 octane, non-lead only, I think) also starting at $8/gal.

I priced out bottom of the line race gas, locally, and it's $8/gal for 94 octane unleaded, straight gas.... same company that sells to some of the stations.

Now,  the small airport 2 miles away has 100 octane leaded for $3.40/gal. I don't plan on using it in anything with a cat, just the UTVs, chainsaws, etc., and toy hauler, for storage and to feed the generator.

Any input? Seems like a reasonable cost to benefit ratio.

Been eyeing these for a while.
8", 15 amp.

I cut some 1/2" scrap plate for future use as bases for awning posts.
With the new blade it cut faster than my 45 plasma cutter, with no clean up needed on the cuts.
The 8" channel cut like butter... MUCH better than an abrasive saw.

Awesome tool!

Build Threads / 12v Cummins Swap/'73 GMC 2500

This is the one vehicle that I'm attached to. My '73 that was purchased on payments in highschool, owned by my shop teacher. We painted it in the body shop, with free paint, school bus yellow... just before I acquired it.

About 14 years ago the original body, abused from 4 wheeling and mudding, was replaced by pieces of a '78, '82, '87, etc. and painted to match my 2000 half ton. The power plant is currently a 66 Pontiac 400, which replaced the worn out 71 Firebird 400, which replaced the blown (up) 350. She also has a 4sp backed up with a 205 transfer case.

Hide Site / My Wife's Hide/Part 1
« on: May 22, 2019, 10:53:05 AM »
This will be a slow thread about transforming a 40+ acre heavily wooded property into my wife's and mine summer retreat.

The older we get the hotter it feels in southern Arizona.  My wife basically wanted a pool, or somewhere cool. I only liked one of those options.

Arizona, our state, does have some beautiful, northern,  high elevation areas,  but the nicest areas are still fairly warm in the summer,  and pretty expensive for acreage, and also dry.

My dream, like many others, was to head to Alaska,  but I knew that would probably never happen. The wife has been retreating to her sister's place in northern Idaho for the last couple years and kept telling me how nice it was,  and "there's water everywhere ". ..kinda like Alaska,  but half as far.

Fast forward to last fall and we ended up with some land close to the SIL, near the Canadian border.

I'm going to install this in my truck, mainly for my upcoming Idaho trip. The property we purchased doesn't seem to have service, and I need to see if a booster will work there. My wife needs internet for work, so if this works, I can plan on installing something similar in the future cabin. Also purchased the optional trucker antenna.

I had this heavy rack that I cut in half to use as a bathroom sink "cabinet ", and the other half just taking up space.

« on: December 02, 2018, 10:54:27 PM »
I built this a couple years ago,  found the pics,   and I'll try to remember the details.
First, started with a propane tank,  empty, with the valve out. I stuck a flame to the opening after it sat for a while,  and it still lit. Good thing it was a brown pants day...sorry no video of me screaming .
I tried to scrape the paint off after soaking it in paint remover, to no avail.
Welded on some brackets so it would sit flat.

Then carefully cut one end off, retaining the inside lip. This will become the door.

Everything Trailer, Camper, or RV related / Fleetwood E3 Filon Roof Failure
« on: December 19, 2017, 06:24:29 PM »
I don't have enough heartache in my life, so here goes another project. A couple years ago I redid the top of this pop-up, when the outer layer (Filon) failed, by sealing the cracks with foamboard sealant/adhesive and a few hundred dollars worth of color matched bedliner.
It failed within a year. I covered it with a canvas tarp and pushed it out of view.

The backstory: Fleetwood (Coleman) switched from aluminum as the roofing material, to a "spaceage" product called Filon around 2006-07. It's a super thin fiberglass like material that is super strong. It first becomes porous (pin holes) then shrinks and cracks. From the forums I've read, they warrantied a few just before selling their pop-up division to a different company. That company went bankrupt and closed their doors.

I recently found out that a different company (somerset rv) started building the same trailer and it actually carries the same name, Evolution 3. I called them to price a new roof and was told that the roofs wouldn't interchange, and that I wasn't the first person to call, regarding the same issue. He (Kevin) says that the roofs are different (even tho they are built on the same plans?) and even with fab skills, no way to modify to fit. No matter how hard I tried, I couldn't convince him to sell me one. He then said even if they would interchange, he had no way to sell me one. (I will add this company to the list...yeah, that list).
I want to document the rebuild here, whether it's a failure or a success, because I haven't seen one like this done on the web.

Coffee Induced Early Morning Rant / Military Convoys
« on: November 09, 2017, 09:36:29 PM »
I've noticed a large amount of Army vehicles headed towards Cali in the last week and just wondered if anyone has any insider intel that may be of interest. Just seemed like a larger amount than I've seen being moved around here before. I saw a couple large convoys of 5 and 10 ton trucks last weekend, heard about a couple more this week, and yesterday a 1 mile train carrying everything from ambulances to tanks passed through.
Maybe I'm just being paranoid, but who knows.

Construction and heavy equipment / John Holland Tractor/Backhoe combo
« on: August 27, 2017, 03:38:12 PM »
This is a story about trying to install a John deere backhoe on a New Holland compact tractor.
I got the 50hp tractor in '08 and plan to keep it , but the one thing I've always really wanted was a hoe. I was looking at a factory setup, and it was going to run close to $12k installed....half of what the tractor cost. The NH version is a combo 3 point/subframe setup, and sticks out several feet from the back (looks REALLY dumb, and low to the ground). Putting an aftermarket "decent" one on would still be close to $8k, and it would also be hooked up to the 3 point (less than ideal).
Well, this JD setup showed up in the paper a couple weeks ago, and the guy was asking $1700. It was their highest rated compact hoe a few years back (they have since changed the model slightly to accommodate a tractor with a cab), and they run almost 9k, plus mounting hardware. It's a quick connect setup that mounts directly to the tractor which puts it as far forward as possible, and is much stronger than the 3 point setup.

The slightly used hoe (the bucket is is not original to this hoe):

Looks like the General is "in" as congress approved the waiver, allowing him to take the job as Secretary of Defense after only 4 years of living as a civilian, after serving in the military for over 40 years (for those that don't know you have to be a civy for 7 or more years before being allowed to hold SoD position). From what I've read, and heard, he seems to be a great leader. I feel pretty good knowing that he will be in charge of protecting our country for at least 4 years.

What do you guys think? Especially our current/former military guys? any thoughts?

I started a new project a couple weeks ago. For those that didn't see (and didn't get a chance to poke fun at me), the new-to-me toy hauler I purchased last year , I bought one that had a 12' garage and then proceeded to stuff a 12.5' Ranger Crew in it. To make it work, I had to raise the roof/bed to clear the top of the ranger, and take the bed off to gain clearance length wise....kind of a pain.

This is what it looks like loaded up:

General Maintenance, How to/DIY projects / Grill Build ('12 GMC)

No, not a cooking grill.
This has to be one of the most useless things I have ever done, but it was fun, and helped to get rid of some more chrome.
The nicer ones, with leds, go for 1000-1700 bucks. This one cost me about 100, and 5000 hrs of cheap labor.
First up, taking the GMC emblem off to give me a flat surface....:

General Maintenance, How to/DIY projects / OBA (OnBoard Air)
« on: April 29, 2016, 10:51:55 AM »
Here's a short thread on installing a York style compressor on a vehicle. There's a million ways to do this, and a million guys have done it in the past.
This is my version, on a '12 GMC diesel. I already have an ARB electric compressor pumping to a small tank that feeds the wireless air bag system and air horns. I'm added a second tank (2.5 gallon ?) under the rear passenger floorboard because that's the only space I have left. It's tied into the rear tank, and I left the accessories the way they were, just unplugging the electric pump.

I went with a "mini" york, a 206 model, because of limited space on a newer Dmax. They are about 2/3rds the size of a full size york (209/211):

...the previous setup. the black thing is the air bag setup:

General Maintenance, How to/DIY projects / Seat Cover Thread
« on: April 29, 2016, 10:33:54 AM »
I've been wanting to protect the leather in my new-to-me truck for some time now. This ('12 GMC) is, in theory, the last truck I will buy and want it to stay nice for as long as i can.
I decided to try out these Coverking Tactical Ballistic Canvas Seat Covers from Auto Anything. They had 3 choices for color; Black, Charcoal, and cashmere....I picked the charcoal. They're as stiff as cardboard, but seam to be pretty tough, and come with Molle on the backsides.

The seats are light grey (almost white) with charcoal dash accents. The covers don't match anything, but after waiting a month and a half, they were installed anyway.

Got tired of cleaning and decided to run a sewer dump station for the rv at home....65' of digging, cutting 30' of driveway (concrete) and so on.
Murphy was along for the ride...pics to follow.

Firearms / Cerakote Coated Guns
« on: December 15, 2015, 09:24:44 AM »
I've never "painted" a gun before, but fixin' to try it out. My favorite pistol happens to be a 1911 commander series 80 in stainless. This is the pistol I carry while hunting in mountain lion country, and areas near the southern border of the good ole U.S., but it's very reflective. Time to tone it down.

We'll be using the C series Cerakote, which is the air dry version. It's slower...taking 5 days to fully cure, but supposed to be tough as nails.
The H series is an epoxy style coating that has to be baked. I chose the air dry version mainly because there's no mixing. Since hardener doesn't have to be added, you can return any unused coating back into the jug, so no waste. This stuff is expensive and I don't want to waste any. The C coating is also rated for higher temps....1200*f...not that my gun will ever see those temps.

..partial tear down:

...she's seen better days.

Coffee Induced Early Morning Rant / Cola Induced Late Morning Rant
« on: November 24, 2015, 08:14:48 PM »
You ever have one of those days?
I've been prepping the shop for some additional concrete, to extend our outdoor work space. This will be a 10' wide strip, about 60' long. It will end at a storage container, and a shed that I keep the pressure washer and steam cleaner in. I need to run power and water to the conex eventually, for lights and a swamp cooler, so I figured I'd take the newly repaired trencher and run some conduit under the future slab.
Right off the bat, I nailed the main water feed....3 feet away from where I thought it was:

...then a few feet away, and a couple hours later (after running to Lowes for pcv supplies and fixing the water) I found a live wire that feeds a yard light....on the opposite side of the shop 100' away!!!
The only way I new I had a problem was that I noticed about 100' of irrigation cable wrapped around the trencher (still not sure where it came from)

...that conduit comes out of the north wall, goes 10' north into the driveway, hooks a 90* west, then slowly curves in a large arc to the south, under my current slab...wth!!! (the marker paint was sprayed after the fact for pics)

Hand Tools, Power Tools, Welders, etc / New Lathe and Mill for the shop
« on: October 12, 2015, 11:09:02 PM »
I've been wanting these 2 tools, for myself, for quite awhile. My (work) tool budget allowed it to happen, but still had to keep it cheap to some degree. I'm not a fan of Anything China when it comes to precision, but don't have the time to restore a classic American lathe or mill either.
After some research, it appeared that Grizzly would be a decent choice for my price range.
They showed up Thursday, just as I was getting ready for my camping trip with the wife, so I didn't get to unbox them until today.

Here's the Model 9972z lathe. It's an 11x26 version (it has 11" work area and up to 26" long project)

...sitting on the pedestal :

Hopefully JR takes it easy on me!!
