Shawn, I’ll keep this in mind.
I had to act on this this year or it would get too far to save IMO.
I’d be after a reasonable long box crew cab frame.
Likely still need a Texas box however.
I’d want a good one for sure.
Frame can be cleaned up, and most likely better than my current save for Michigan Illinois salt belt ones.

So I took a week off to address a few projects.
Mama is in Mexico with a girlfriend for a birthday party.

So I’m cleaning up little and not so little things.
First up was empty truck and trailer but that’s for another thread.

This update includes why I haven’t had anti stop brakes for the last decade or better.
I honestly don’t recall when the module failed but was many 100k miles ago. 10-12 years I’d wager.

So I pulled the electrical part of the module off the spare truck and swapped it into my truck.
Lo and behold no more lights and excessive dinging. Lol.
Test drive to come as I forget how they (fail)work.
Yeah, I’m not even a fan of that old of tech…

One of the coils was broken off the board.
I’ll do a how to on that if I can fix it.
It’s a work in progress but I need my good solder station at work ti finish up.

The motor and sensor on the unit are known to go bad.

Well, I have yet to look at the anti-stop brake module but am pressing forward on the bodywork.

So last night it all started back up.
First had to put the battery back into the donor...yes, battery...
Had to boost truck at marina a week or so ago, all that week it seemed to be turning over slower and slower.
In any case, swapped out batteries, charged the ones and found one to hold 13 volts, the other 10...
So, the good one is in the donor, the old one will go for salvage.

Got the driveway re-arranged for space for parts and off came the topper. (First time since new, me and two other guys for simplicity)
Then dropped the spare and removed the eight bed bolts.
They came out with essentially no fuss and onto the fuel filler neck.
Well, they twisted out of the plastic, and voila the fill neck was off.
Last was the electrical. Well, there's a beauty of a terminal junction on these old girls, but the bumper was impeding my access.
Hadn't planned to remove it, but all the muck, gunk and 350k of crud needed cleaned out so I didn't break stuff.
Off came the bumper, quick spray with water and all the connections quicky came off.

Tonight, me and three guys will walk the bed onto the sawhorses pictured to the right and I'll be able to get at the frame for a well needed cleanup.
Other activities will ensue as well on the less seen parts.

My stupid quick fix on the pictures goes like this w/ an iPhone at least.

-Prior to posting the picture open it up on your phone and view it.

-Edit & rotate picture to incorrect rotation

-Save it

-Edit it again and save in correct rotation.

-Now post and it should be correct. I’m not computer savvy really but this always works for me.


I use Tapatalk to post all pictures on this forum for the record.

Got the box off tonight.
It’s ugly. But it’s all minor.
Probably 30 pounds of gravel and dirt in everywhere.

Pressure washed and removed a lot of stuff.
Even with 350k there’s still that black wax crap everywhere.

I do know you probably have spent more time already cleaning on your new ride than I have on this one. And some of that is why I’m here.

With a few hours of wire cup and some other tools and a fresh coating it will look great!

Just sand blast it. Messier buy will get everywhere.

Will be a combo of the two.
Have a gynormous sandblasted from work that my good compressor may run for a few seconds a tank full. Have a smaller unit from a buddy, may be too small for any good.
Have a few wire cups as well. It’ll get cleaned up and a few treatments prior to POR15 and then undercoating if I bought enough.
Cab corners and rockers are in the docket for this week(end) not sure how well it will go.
Rain in the forecast so work with doors off may not fly. Lol.
Amazed how light the box was, and how sturdy it still is. I thought it was flapping in the wind over bumps but I can’t move the bed sides from the gate opening.
Lots to do but it only is time and effort. I can spare both of those so we’ll see where we’re at by next weekend.

Did mine in driveway at old place. Just used a cheap HF with play, but got the job done. Tarped, sifted old stuff, round and round.

Spent the day at the lake.
Caught a few walleye for another day and came home to start rippin and tearin into the rockers and cab corners. So part of that is the removal of front fenders…

While I may have more hours into cleaning my new truck I can definitely say you run your truck a whole lot more then I do as well

The salt comes with the visits south. But yeah they use it here too.

Today started into it.


Marked out the new cab corner and started drilling spot welds out.

Cut line moved one inch down to start.

That cut revealed a real mess and was not high enough. Inside was compromised enough to go up the inch.

And there is sound metal. Not sure what the foamed in piece is, I suspect dust or moisture control or both. But it created a crisp line of good metal.

Then recruited help to pull doors.
Saw a couple videos where guys dropped them and broke glass…so nope I can get help.


I gutted out a bunch of interior in the rain this morning. Loads of Killmat going on a lot of the cab.

Took the front fender off as it needed to to get all the rocker. That’s a pain in the butt. New rocker out to test fit and mark out.


And commence the cuttin.


All the dirt and rust and dust….

Out with the air hammer and chiseled off the rocker.
Done for today lots of fitting and cleaning to do.
Sandblasting next up on the inner rocker. Then final fit and weld er up of the outer.

Charles…that’s definitely one way to put it.
I figure I’m about 10 hours into the drivers side now.


Sandblasted and added a patch at the bottom at the back half of the inner. It was a tad soft, so with clean metal what better time.


Not fitting pics, as it’s lather rinse repeat same as bed sides was. My buddies son is a millwright in training. What’s to fix his truck up and is giving me a hand with the unwieldy rockers. After I burned a few spot welds on o figured it’s sound enough steel to let him at it. He did good for first mig welding.

Welded and ground out.

Doors back on. If you look close you may notice a big gap at the back. You may not as well. The rocker was twisted some and not until the top tacked and doors back on was it noticeable. We had to push a quarter inch down to align the door gap. Small patch inside and gone.

I’ve been forced into a corner which is the main drive. Aside from not having my truck.
19 July 2023 come hell of high water a trailer load of stuff will be heading south behind me.

The sheet metal place killed my timeline. Was nearly two months to get.

And yeah, when I go, I really go.
I grew up not poor but not well off on a farm.
Looking at the world now that work ethic is hard to find these days.
By 14 I was building road worthy trailers to haul farm equipment on.
By 16 I was rebuilding engines for vehicles and equipment.
I had a torch in one hand and a welder in the other so to speak.
So fabricating and repairing is in my blood and my blood is usually on it too. Lol.

Plan is to have cab done by end of weekend ready for paint.
Need to do Nor-cal Nic fender tuck while I’m in here.
Fenders and hood from donor don’t need a lot.
Box has a couple days prep left.

All goes well by next weekend I could be painting.
Will hinge on the frame cleanup out back as well our union staff may be beginning labour action this weekend. Puts me on call if it does go, so may distract my time from work.

Aggressive schedule yes, but like you said, winter is coming

Well missed a day. Was a busy past couple at work. And in the driveway I suppose too.

Got the cab corner fitted and in.
The metal I thought was sound looking gave me fits welding it in, but it’s done.

Somehow I missed the fender mod pics.
I’ll get that on the passenger side I suppose.

As I switched the truck around to do the passenger side one of my buddies sends me this meme.



I laughed pretty hard…

Only difference is tires basically.

So all tore down and passenger side commenced.
I should have taken an on the truck picture.
This is why you change the full rocker.
If you think a slip on is good enough you had better be cleaning up to sell.



It’s totally ugly and upside down. But you’d want to believe a slip on would fix you up.

That is very heavy corrosion to the door jambs basically. Not fit to weld to for sure.

So I spent the evening derusting via flap wheel, sandblaster and skin.
Passenger side prepped to start the rebuild tomorrow.
Mama coming home from the south today(with any luck) so I’ll be repositioning her to the lake tonight.

Oh, and for all y’all hearing about or living with the Forrest fire smoke. We’re there too.


This does not show it nearly as thick as I see it.
But it’s another beautifu day in the great not currently white north.

All the way down in Kentucky, visibility was down to one mile or less two days ago. Remarkable that there is that much smoke. That is hundreds of thousands of square miles of affected area!

Well a bit of an update.
Lather ronse repeat continues.

Passenger side welded up now.
Thunderstorm set in this afternoon and put a halt to me getting to bodywork.

Cab is ready.



Since it was raining I pulled the shocks off the back.
Have new hardware for them. Had to put in some ground down grade five bolts when I changed the shocks. Old bolts were done.
Then started some sound deadening.

Got the back of the cab done now. The 3 am callout is catching up now. So short day today. Only 12-13 hours. Lol.

With any luck tomorrow the sun shines most of the day and I’ll have the bodywork done and maybe some primer on.

Sounds solid to me. I did the whole cab of the Duramax truck last summer and it had more of a "Museum/library" (lack of) sound quality to it. Gone was the "tinniness" and resonance. Made the cab feel, well, stronger and more solid. I was dealing with a side outlet exhaust, and it helped with that.
Put a square on the inside of the door panel, find a place on the inside of the fender, and if the headliner is off, onto the bottom side of the roof. It will stop all the natural vibrations of the component parts.

Got the back of the van done last night.
It rained all night. We need it.
Woke up to a touch of sun and it’s been a beautiful day to work outside.

Nor-Cal tuck done on both sides now. Hope it helps with the tire rub.


Wedding and grinding done.
On to filler…I hate filler amd the sanding rust goes with it.

Passenger done on to driver.

Mix apply sand clean repeat…
On to primer.

A very crude masking, as I’m doing the whole cab later. Just need to get the bare metal covered.

And done for now.
I’m a day ahead of where I wanted to be. This is a good thing.

Next up, big driveway clean.
Raise the paint booth.
Prep and paint the cab.
