Faith Discussion / Re: Christians: Prepare for worsening times
« on: October 26, 2015, 11:00:00 AM »
I'm not a coffee person really, has to be really cold out or I don't touch it and I'm too cheap to buy $5 iced coffee's as I don't enjoy them enough to pay the cost. Now my wife makes up for my lack of coffee and it cost me a $600 coffee maker to get her to give up Starbucks. When we moved where we are now she lucked out and there are two Christian locally owned shops she can choose from.......

Edit: and make no mistake this is a fight that we are engaged in here. Many aspects to soldiering and I'm sure the real soldiers here on the board can attest to that as well.

IMO, one of the largest ways you an help protect yourself is to spend your money wisely. I have always been involved in my families finances. However I now run them entirely. We refuse to spend our money towards causes that continue to attack our way of life. Whether it is Christianity or Family or you name any other moral cause. Not sure what I mean? Have you bought Starbucks recently? If you have and still don't get what I'm saying please google Howard Schultz and see what he is politically promoting with your funds. Again this is not for the regulars here but those who may be passing through. In the end this is light versus darkness. Which side do you want to be on?

We try to do the same. Wife is primary one that runs the fiances but we don't make any purchases other than normal groceries with out consulting each other. I gave up star bucks entirely a couple years ago. That sucked. I love their coffee. I always try to buy American. When we re did the house everything came from the local lumber yard. Appliances came from the mom and pop store appliance store in town. Not many of them left.  There was not lowes, home depot, menards. It is so hard. As for electronics there is no buy American. Its all made over seas. I do try to opt for made in Japan over China, Mexico, etc.

Kinda like Home Depot vs Lowes. What do they stand for??

you mean you don't want to get yelled at while laying in the ER bed while your wife is inflicting torture on you in some way shape fashion or form for making her worry about you.................? ;D

Funny story, wife was working as a unit secretary part time in a small local er prior to her entering nursing school. I was converting kitchen pantry into first floor laundry closet. Using a hole saw that had straight screw driver style set screw instead of Allen style to hold drill bit in hole saw. Grabbed broken nasty tipped screw driver. Ended up slicing web in right hand between thumb & pointer finger. Bleeding pretty good go back up stairs & wash it out & ask wife for towel to wrap it up. So she starts flipping out gunna have mom come over so she can drive me to er. I wasn't having it, wife claimed if she didn't drive me I wouldn't go. So I drove myself towards er, right before I get to er there is a 4 way stop. Took a min & looked at hand, bleeding had tapered off so I went right by er to Walgreens & bought $20 worth of butterfly's & neosporin. Wrapped it up & drove home. Get home wife looks at me & says you never went to ER did ya? I said yeah but they took one look at me called me a sissy then told me to go to Walgreens buy some bandages & neosporin. Wife's response "really?"

Nice Ken you crazy ol koot! I try to stay out of the ER, wife works there and definitely don't need to deal with her anymore than I already have to...... ::)

Shawn,  you mean like this? I slapped it together a few years ago. It was supposed to go all the way across. ...above the garage doors  (3 car). The center 2x4s go up to outer roof joists, and I was going to do that for all of the hangers eventually (with actual bolts) but got lazy. Those are 1-1/2" screws......they've held my weight a few times.  Lol

The back of those are screwed into studs, no nails for this.

I would trust several hundred on each one easy.

When you say "screwed" you mean lag bolts?

Copy, when I think screws I naturally think drywall or deck screws......

Heavy screws, 3x10. SDS or lags would work too. Never had one come loose.

One of my main problems is everything I have that I want to store weighs quite a bit. Those two racks I used over the garage door area max out at 250# each which is fine for tackle boxes and a couple tubs with not much in them. They are also hanging from the ceiling so I get it. The reason for these lofts is to hold a lot more weight (things like the CRF50 bike etc) which is why I will incorporate posts along walls to support the additional weight so that I don't end up with load shear and a big mess on the floor.

Ok, gunna post these before photos now. Otherwise I will start and forget to take any. Basically what you see is the back corner of my front two bays of my garage. I basically have a 3.5 car garage, 2 up front and 1.5 added in the rear of those. I am going to build a little loft in this corner above the (soon to be compressor, waiting on parts from eaton compressor now) and over rated drill press / mill. Once I have this completed I will be building another loft at the back of the 3rd car garage spanning the width which is around 13'-14' and it will be 4' deep.

Yes, I will do a build thread on the compressor as well. Soon as parts show up via the big 18 wheeler.......

Ouch, haven't had that problem yet thank goodness.....

Good luck.  I have had similar but with my basement walls.  Framers did 2 foot centers and no drywall backing.   I can't ever catch two studs for a shelf and if you lean into a corner you pop the drywall. :(

Nah, to live in East Texas you have to have screwed up haircut or funny teeth. Never had screwed up hair cut (albeit I do have less hair now) and teeth ain't never really been a problem......... ;D

I heard Shawn said people from East Texas don't have all their teeth but they do have six toes and marry their sisters...

So due to the fact that the rack ceiling mounts wouldn't come anywhere near touching a truss with the black diamond layout I had to add the garage door opener style angle with the holes to the ceiling and then attach rack to this. It works and holds up to 250# above the garage door which was dead space before. All in all a good storage idea, new lesson learned check spacing of joists before purchasing.

Lumber just arrived for next overhead loft, stay tuned as I will be completing this addition next week..........

Ok, so down sizing has me running out of room real quick. I started by buying a couple of overhead ceiling mount racks from Lowe's. Which after I was done modifying them to fit cost me twice as much as initially budgeted. You see this is twice now that the black diamonds on a tape measure have bit me in the rear. Black diamonds you ask? Yeah take a standard tape measure and look at the 19.2" mark. There should be a small black diamond. These are known as metric marks or 5 equal spaces for every 8'. Yeah forget 16" on center or 24" on center some brilliant knucklehead came up with the diamond idea. My first run in with them was years ago building our first ranch home. We used engineered floor joists to span a 30' basement. Laid them out and nailed them at 24" center to end up with a couple extra and have to cut them loose and then read instructions telling us that it was that blasted diamond spacing.  >:(

So on to this weeks experience. Garage ceiling or floor joists of master bedroom are the black diamond spacing. Buy overhead garage kit from Lowe's. Sorry, not engineered for black diamond spacing....... So do I take them back for a refund? Nope that's too easy, I just go buy mo' parts and pieces.

1911, yeah they are reliable (usually) and 100+ year old technology....

Now there is a lot to be said for running what you are familiar with, I'll be keeping my 870 too....

However, Don has made some really good arguments for Glocks over the years. I have big paws so as far as handling they don't bother me. I guess run whatever you are comfortable with but I am a proponent of having multiple calibers at your disposal. I never like having all my fish in one basket.

That's why i don't own a Glock. Too many numbers.

We have Costco out here, in fact they put one in back in Indiana a year before we left and I liked it mo' better than Sam's. They usually have a good tire sale around Nov ish. Put bridgestones on wifes car a year go and essentially bought 3 and received one free.

OK, back to MT's will take a look at Toyo's and see what they will run me for a set.

Thanks Tate for the input. If you sold tires, I value your opinion. My operation is pretty small, so not a good sampling.

I'm thinking of getting out from under these Grapplers...they're starting to drive me nuts (and I'm half deaf!).
Toyo M/T it will be (see how that rhymed?)

Wilber, I'm boycotting Sam's. I went in there with a shop list of expendables, filled the cart full to the tune of about 1400 (which included one of those fancy igloo Yeti look-a-likes, for Ken's huntin'), rolled up to the checkout with the shop visa in hand, and they say "sorry sir, we don't accept visa". I said wtf, left my cart sitting there, felt guilty, went back and paid with my personal monies. EErrr   The door greeter said "but we take them at the fuel pumps" and to that I said "I didn't come here for gas" and left.

So everyone agrees if you want a good MT that the Toyo MT's are hard to beat? Needing to get a set of MT's for JK before winter hits, always ran the old BFG MT's but those new KM2's bring the suck as far as I'm concerned they wear way too quick.

Classifieds / Stak B-box 2 Speed Aluminum Transfer Case EB Early Bronco
« on: October 20, 2015, 11:54:24 AM »
SOLD

I ran this in my personal 1973 early bronco. This was mated to a C4 and has High Angle Driveline flanges front and rear. Also included is a custom laser cut & built skid / mount plate. My EB was a trailer queen and this case has no where near 500 miles on the unit. Low range is 4.13-1.00, the case has always functioned flawlessly. It is clean but a used unit and there will be a few minor scratches on the exterior of the case along with slight rusting on the drive flange etc. Has twin stick control for front digs etc. This is the b-box configuration which is meant to fit in between the narrow frame rails on an early bronco & will fit many other applications as well. If you are building or have capable off road EB and want the strongest aftermarket t-case ever produced for this model truck this is your chance to buy one of these rare units. Located 80516 can crate for a small fee & truck freight on your dime. Asking 2K obo

have this for sale locally as well

Thanks for the link Ken, I've had several mills over the years all used bridgeports. You can find them in good shape for $3K but again moving them is a pain. I currently have a large Powermatic drill press with a swiss mill table and its not a BP either!  :o

I always ran a 3 phase converter as well. They work but are noisy, actually they have a weird hum or sound to them that will drive you nuts. I was looking at the single phase conversions and would choose that route in the future, fyi for anyone looking.

Ken, if you don't mind me asking what is the approx. retail price on that mill along with specs? I sold my 2hp Bridgeport prior to moving. At 2k its pretty hard to move without some larger equipment. But at 700# that mill might be something I could handle here in my garage......

I think a lot depends on who is administering the program. Also depends on your "area" as we are prone to floods, wildfires and tornados. Missing people so search and rescue is also common place here with all the extreme outdoor activities. Our instructor is pretty much not by the book. Hits main points and then focuses on our AO

I would like to see the program now.  I took it over 10 years ago now when it was just in its infancy...wonder how much has changed.

These work really well, had a carhart camo one I used for years, now its pulling winch accessory duty in back of JK. I used an assault backpack I had laying around last Friday but like the tool bag mo better. I really like them for multiple uses, easy to strap down to things. In fact I will be adding one at least to the WR450 build......

I have 2 of these bags that came with drills. One's loaded up with shotgun shells, plugs, and lube. The other is a range bag with tools, lube, shells, etc. They have little pockets on the inside for drill bits or whatever.
