Cooper MTPs for the Dmax
« on: September 04, 2018, 06:59:11 PM »
Dropped a grand on a set of Cooper Discoverer MTPs 37/12.50-17 today. Will be that much after rebates and 9 months same as cash helps.

Won't go on right away, still have some tread left and the lift still has to go on. Hopefully this will push me to get it going as it needs a regear the same time (3:73 to 4:56).

So for I like the coopers and reviews are good on this as well. Better hwy use without loosing off road grip.

And what does off highway grip mean to you? I will be needing new tires at some point and like having some bite when needed but don't want the load sound for most of the time. My rig is used for towing mostly, that does include slippery boat ramps and getting the travel trailer into a good hunting/camping area. It does see adverse road conditions and not so good off road stuff at times but for the most part it is on asphalt. I usually put on the Toyo, and have no complaints but always looking for better.

most of mine will be highway, but I do some towing. Have the boat now and see snow often enough to think about it. Plus I like the slightly more aggressive look, noise aside.

I have had Toyo's and Nittos but unless new they just don't have the grip I like and the nittos wore fast! I am not an aggressive driver at all which plays into wear.

Discount tire 10% + 10% for new card members?  I just did that for the wife's rig... plus a $50 MIR for a total of $200 savings. Trying out some Hankooks this time...

Another reason why I pulled the lever now. Got 15% and may get another $50. Plus the rear tires are under 1/8th, one front has a 1/4.

Yeah I probably could have milked them a bit longer, but with winter rain coming it is probably best. I had 3/32's left on the rears at the end of July and then took a 3000 mile road trip the first week of August. Since there was so little tread, it was hard to get a perfect balance on them (or so they told me) and I fought a shimmy in the steering wheel for most of the trip. Wasn't so bad once I hit 80mph, but 60-65 was pretty bad. Seemed to get better by the end... or I was just so numb I didn't notice it.

Well where is the photos?

What lift do you have to put on that truck?

Why are you going taller? You know that makes it hard to get in right?

JR,

I can testify that the 4.56 gear I run with the 37's works well. My mileage and power are both good.

I think you could get away with 4.10 with a tune and transmission reprogramming to hold gears longer, like with the tow mode, but the 4.56 would work, and you'll be amazed at how it feels, like the truck is lightweight.

Yep, 4.3 would be perfect but not made. I don't even use 6th right now, so the 4.56 will rev faster also and probably keep my same cruise RPM.

Not at the moment, we have some extended shackles in inventory I believe still.

Just got in two new styles of shock brackets and the new superduty Dana 60 covers

Literally, just got them off the trailer. Yeah I need a real shop.....

As someone who has owned a 4K# forklift, a skid loader with forks and a 90 hp tractor with loader and forks this is how do I say minimalist?!?

No place for all that stuff in hippyland without breaking the bank.

I guess I don’t understand. I cruise my truck about 75 80 and it sits right down on the bottom of sixth like a fat girl in a bean bag.  Low Rpm and gets great mpg.

JR, may not be relevant, but my LML will shift into 6th at some pretty low speeds. With the tune the Canadians provided and this bigger turbo, I am frankly surprised it does that. Although it will and produce in and around 19 mpg in a country road driving setting, I find I do not like it. I much prefer driving in tow haul mode and holding 4th and 5th. So I see both your's and Dave's viewpoints.

I keep mine in 5th as well, up until about 70. Rough on mileage, but sure is smooth, and easier to pass someone :)

Tap shift Down a gear and pass away. No need to over RPm your motor.  Diesels like less rpm for a reason

I don’t ever have to downshift to pass - put it in Drive and do so - Allison is way smarter and more capable than we are!

...a Dmax can hold 3500 all day long, and out pull an in-line 6 because of it. It's not an old farmall tractor engine. Higher RPMs will also keep the EGTs lower when towing. Just a matter of driver preference (leadfoot or not)

Mine seems to lug at that rpm. High EGTs and load. Same tire size.

I need to call them for some new tunes. I have a new turbo wheel to install, plus the lift and my DSP tunes seem to get lousy mileage, much happier with a edge 100/200 tune I tweek for tank size and tire size.

Drove a 26' Penske truck with a Cummins in it a couple weekends ago and yeah... that thing didn't want to downshift to save its life! Merging onto the highway I had the pedal to the floor and nothin. Only had 1000lb in it, too.

I am by no means saying lower rpm is the best case or saying that high rpm are bad. Just that the lower your rpm the better mpg you can achieve.

I don’t always use my tap shifter to pass people because of the built trans but when I do it is a whole different surprise for the person I am passing.

I get that towing real light but not heavy stuff.

My tunes suck right now. Reloaded the Rob DSP5 and it just missing something and get 12mpg around town. I run the edge 125 and get 15-16 in town and 22 on the highway.

My tires came in so I need to get the lift on and the re-gear done asap.

Well, the MTPs are still sitting at AT waiting for the SAS. However I was going to Yosemite with the Scouts and the 1/2 treat on the old coopers were not going to cut it.

So the local Americas Tire got me a set of Maxxis Rzar 35/12.5-17 for the interm and my budget. Got em on for the trip and I really like em so far.

Great in the snow, didn't even need 4x4 until I was on some ice. They are much quieter than the cooper stt and ride smoother too.

In the long run they may end up on one of the subs, have to see.
