Firearms / Re: PVS 14 Mount
« on: December 29, 2021, 07:51:26 PM »
So I was trying to stalk up on some pigs the other night and just couldn’t get a good picture through the PVS 14.  Hadn’t noticed that the standard mount was out of alignment with the compM4 but in complete darkness it really obscured the field of view.

So I ordered American Defense QD PVS mount and the SOCOM height CompM4 mount so at least I know that they’ll both be at the same height since both mounts are made by the same company.  Will post up pics when I get it next week.

American Defense.. great products and only a couple hours south of me.

I love my Garmin Fenix 5x Plus. But I have other watches I rotate out on wearing, for Christmas the girlfriend and her son bought me a watch box to keep them in along with my memorial bracelets. Looks nice, I used to just have them sitting out on top of a bookcase out of the way, but still where I can see the bracelets and reach the watches when I wanted to swap them out.

Other than removal of finger grooves there isn't any real difference between the gen 3/4/5s in my opinion. Small slight tweaks don't make one version better than others, because no one leaves their stuff stock for very long and once the changes start they generally end up being the same as the other ones in the respective safes. But that's my standing off on the sidelines not paying for anything opinion.

Is the 1st of the 19th the only regiment training 11 series folks?

I don't know. There used to be others but then they moved the Armor school there and stuff changed.

As long as he fits the measurements for the uniform. I recall it being very selective on size.

They are posted online somewhere.

He is accepting of it, although he wanted to be a deployable infantryman.

They do deploy on occasional basis. Most recently I believe they were in Africa training some country's military, if I remember correctly. If he wanted to be a Tomb Guard, nothing to stop him from putting his name forward and trying out for it.

Sounds like great weather.  40s at night?

Mid to low 30s overnight last weekend in northern WI.

Yep, real low 30s maybe 45-50 during the day in Sylvania Wilderness. I'll try to get some photos together and do a write up. But I went tech free, no smartwatch, left my phone on airplane mode then turned it off.

Ok so you want a semi auto, but like the M110, and wanted an M24.

So why not build a AR10 in 308? If you look and browse smartly you can build one upper for a hunting set up, and one for more of a M110 style. However if you are dead set on acquiring a BAR in 30-06 then I'd go with it and just bring it home.

Kind of pricey for a 30-06. Maybe it's me but with that much money you could get a good bolt action, a scope and some bullets. Then again, I'm searching for a simple wood stocked 30-06 that will only be used for deer hunting... perhaps that skewed my thoughts.

Alright, I'm going to have to try and make this sometime this summer. Possibly the same weekend I finally buy a smoker.. maybe at some point hopefully.

In all honesty bobby, i did it in the smoker because i did not want to heat up the house for almost 5 hours. I even did the bacon, onions and the rest of the prep on the outdoor propane stove.

I meant it more as I need/want a smoker.

I need to do this sometime. With the RMAA trip canceled I am looking for a filler. Think a nice loop around the western states would be great!

My girlfriend is already planning a roadtrip to Seattle and back. I spent some of the day looking at trading in my jeep for a truck. So far a 2018 Silverado 1500 is at the top of the list.

Ran a Precision Rifle Match at the club Saturday. Had 61 guys come out to shoot.  Each one fired about 100 rounds throughout the day.  Targets were varied in range from 100 to 675 yards. Most targets were about  2MOA in size (12" target at 600 yards).  My wife came out to take some photos of the match.

Firearms / Re: M1A NM upgrade
« on: March 25, 2021, 07:24:08 PM »
Bobby,
I have a lot of time and history with the M1A/M14.
Been down the McMillian stocks which are super expensive (Like $900 ish I think
I've played with the bubbas cheek pieces thing-ah-ma-bobs
And I've learned that you give the old guy the M1A and set him up on the ridge, while you and the whipper-snappers charge the saloon.
The rifle already has the factory NM barrel so that's staying, and is accurate beyond my present shooting abilities.
For runnin'-N-gunnin' I have that trimmer Sig.

You have time and history with them sure, I'm talking about finding a gunsmith who has time and history working on them. Your rifle as it sits is a capable and effective medium range rifle, especially in the terrain that is around your farm.

Firearms / Re: M1A NM upgrade
« on: March 23, 2021, 10:09:09 PM »
Well, Bobby, been nice knowing ya!

OK, seriously, why not? What's wrong with it?

The M1A stock is meant to shoot iron sights. I need to add this ugly leather (Retains moisture) cheek riser just to get a decent cheek weld to shoot the gun scoped. This Arch-angel has adjustable check piece and length of pull.

I like the GI stock for nostalgia, but I am not displaying the thing but redeveloping it for a medium range gun.

If you want to do anything with the M1A other than keep it OG, I'd recommend getting a fiberglass stock that matches the original lines... like

Stock:
https://mcmillanusa.com/stock/m1a/

Cheekrest:
https://www.fulton-armory.com/cheek-rest-adjustbale-kydex-m14-m1a-fa-by-tacpro.aspx

Then getting the the action glass bedded by a reputable good gunsmith, preferably someone who has knowledge of the M1A, or even better M14 series rifles. If you want to be even specialer than upgrade the barrel to a Kreiger or Criterion barrel, and upgrade the gas system. Basically turn the match M1A into an M21, albeit it with modern components.

The M14/M1A is going to be a 1.5 MOA(ish)shooter no matter what you really do to it. I'd recommend keep it as it is and do SOME upgrades to it, but in its original form it is more than capable of being a medium range weapon. The scope mounting is where the design sucks, but companies have developed some better mounts that fix that issue. I haven't messed with one since I was a SDM back in the day, and before the Scout PL took it away, but the one I had assigned to me was a wood stock and it was bedded, don't remember the scope that was on it but I only had it for a couple weeks at most.

With nothing to do a few mornings ago and a wallet full-o-cash, I decided to upgrade the weapon. Arch-angle furniture, always needed a bipod, new picatinny scope mount, and a new 30mm scope.

You put that stock on there and I don't think we can be friends anymore. I can support the other additions however not the stock.

I have a cart on primary at the moment,    Can’t decide on a stock for the 308 yet.

What're you wanting to use it for? That barrel length I'd personally just stick an A1 or A2 stock since they are cheap, however you could drop some money and get a MagPul PRS. Although, I have seen people stick a collapsible stock on it.

My opinion. Buy the donor (eventual) truck, take the Burb as is on the trail ride. Save up some money and time.. pull the 6.0 and sell it or transplant it in the kids truck. That'll give you space and more money to work on the diesel to swap into the Burb. You have the Duramax for most of your common usage. Get the Burb running properly and be one with it. Sitting around vacillating is only going to end up costing you more time and money.

Worked and came home to a quiet house. The girlfriend, her son, her best friend, best friend's husband and brother all went up north to my GF's dad's cabin to go snowshoeing and check out state parks. I have to work and couldn't take off due to other people having vacation. So it's a quiet weekend for me and Bear the GSD who gets to relax while I go work.

So since I'm not currently going to re-read previous postings for this, have you looked into a Quonset hut building? I see the commercials for them pretty frequently and there are many farmers that have them up here for storage of feed, tractors, parts or whatever you want. I've seen them with PAX doors, double garage doors to open front/back.

It might be close to the same price as a canvas skin stretched over metal frame buildings.
