So the Pit Boss failed me as the outdoor temps fell.
To be fair it dropped to zero overnight.
The wind tunnel that was set up in contributed to the fail as well.

Had to move into the garage.
Finished the pieces in the oven as once wrapped smoke isn’t getting in anyway.

At midnight they hit temp and I pulled them out to cool.
Not how I planned the night as 05:00 comes fast.

Pics and final product to come.

Sam, my hearing doc told me the 357 is the hardest on the hearing of most any caliber. I can hardly hear without aids and they only help a little.
Funny part is, with all the shooting I have done, the 357 is probably the least shot of anything in the safe. Hearing protection is a great thing to use but in my younger years hardly anyone wore them including me. Can’t say my hearing is gone because of shooting but it didn’t help.

I’ll agree with you Bob.
It packs a heck of a report.
My 300 is probably louder to me, but may actually not be.
I’ve lost a lot of my hearing as well.
Some from shooting.
Some from woodworking.
Some from work.
Don’t need aids at this point but don’t have a lot left before I do.

If you were to choose corned beef instead the process changes.

Where I drained and filled with fresh water you would instead put the corned beef into a pot.

Cover with water and then bring to a boil.
It is cooked in water and then is done.

Pastrami is smoked.

I used sirloin tip instead of brisket.
Some may shun me for that.
It works with most cuts. Trying sirloin this time.

So. As some of you may have noticed, a couple weeks ago I made some ham.
Once I wrapped that up, I broke down a sirloin tip.
It went into a pickle and today it becomes pastrami.

Now for those unaware.
Pastrami is smoked corned beef, well smoked, uncooked corned beef.

Here it is being broken down.

Much to my dismay here is the next picture.
It spent about 10 days in the pickle.
Last night drained it off and added fresh water to desalinate it some.
Today it’s in the smoker to cook.

It’s chilly today and the smoker needs some insulation. Current air temp about 25, but a good breeze killing the temps.
I’ll have a delicious smelling packing blanket later.

Do you, in your opinion think I should put something like that on my Dually which I am using as a camper dolly this summer?

Highly subjective, I know, but it is actually just insurance and removes the gamble of getting disabled in the middle of nowhere, but costs me $3500 and adds 200 pounds of weight.

Very short answer is yes.
A buddy of mine hit a small doe with his newish Chevy. Front right corner.
Took out radiator, trans cooler, bumper bits, signals, grill, and whatever else.
Disabled on highway.
Out of truck for over a month.
I’m considering adding the extra protection to mine when I redo the raptor.

That and Shawn spot on with reaction time and eyesight fading with time.

That is a nice piece there chief.
Thank ya!

It's my second as I have stated, and like, everyone I know also has one...

You probably have one too, right?

It would be a great gun for you and for what you do. Magnum handgun and all that. Btw, my first magnum handgun was actually a S&W .41 magnum in blued steel. That was a darned powerful shooter in its own right. I purchased it to take whitetail but sold it before I ever hunted with it.
I have a blued 686 in 357 magnum with the 6” barrel.
Yep. We’ve all got one. lol.

My first ham. It won’t be my last.

Was just going to post up some pics. But alas. Cannot get on the taptalk.
So no pics.

Was fixing my trailer. Sectioning out above the axles so I hopefully stop bending 7k axles…
And a blizzard hit us yesterday.
Hope it’s the end for this year.

Indeed. Downtime/fun is essential.

Well I went down the road of home made ham.
Found a brine recipe.
Put a pork butt in it for four days.
Rinsed in fresh water for the day yesterday.
Smoked ‘er up last night.

Well….shoulda not dunnit.

Tastes better than it looks.
And 7 1/2 pound ham for just over 20 bucks.

Also started some corned beef.
Likely to smoke half to pastrami and boil other half for corned beef. But not sure. That’s a week from now.

Got all in it and forgot to snap any more pics.
Broke down a whole sirloin tip. Will be 12 pounds for about 80 bucks. Better than 25 bucks a pound at the deli here.

Been cutting firewood last couple days.
Mid 50’s both days and 30 overnight.

Snow going fast! Two weeks ago it was mid thigh to waist deep.
Today not much over a foot. But lots of water and slush turning up today.

Also kept some five foot long chunks of birch to cut to lumber for my woodworking bench.
I dont think I have quite enough but we shall see when I cut it up.

Had to upgrade my garage panel to get more breakers installed.
Well I need some work, but the plasma works well and cuts well.

This is some scrap from work that we just couldn’t sent to the dump. 6” square 18 feet long.

The guy running the torch needs to figure out speed distance and air, but it cuts.

I’ll add my two cents on tires.
I travel 200 miles of what I will assume is similar to the Alaska highway.

I used to carry two spares.
I was running “cheap” house brand 10 ply tires.
I was not all about 500 dollar tires.
I used two spares at times with the cheap rubber.
Twice in fact. Once was on my way for new tires.

I learned my lesson and now run Good Year duratracs.
Toyo M55’s prior, but they were somewhere between terrible and dangerous on ice.

I now carry one spare, a plug kit and good 12 volt compressor.

Economy tires and less than 1/4” - 3/8” tread are a recipe for flats.
Just what I’ve found over the last 23 years of the road I travel.

I did however cut a Toyo Open Country bead to bead one spring in some terrible road conditions. Read foot deep ruts. I suspect I found an old burried grader blade or the edge of a sharp boulder.

To be honest it wasn’t too windy but it does add up quick.
Likey in the -50 to 50-something range.

I generally don’t pay “that” much attention as if I’m heading out in that cold I’ll be on a snowmobile or some other form of wind amplifying device.
Wind proof head gear and mitts are a must.

Had a couple quarts of heavy cream coming up on its best before date.
So made butter.

If you’re unaware of how easy it is, it literally takes 12-15 minutes.

Look on YouTube or other and it’s simple.
Into the mixer, whip it till it separates out the butter.
Mix/knead the last of the buttermilk out add some salt and voila.

Just shy of a pound per quart.

Nice start. I have seen the system used many times and looks great to hide screw heads.

I really need to build something for the Tahoe. I have stuff rolling all around.
I also love the Kreg system.

Chief. Cut out the far end a hole for the end of the slide to slide into.
You’ve got 3/4” there and the 60” will then fit.

D.O.T. / Re: WDYDT (What Did You Do Today)
« on: February 13, 2024, 08:05:45 AM »
Weird, its measured from the outisde, so thickness should not matter.
I think it’s more on the 3D printed stuff. With only 40 or 50 thou clearance and having to clock everything square to the plane of the bed there is not enough space. Without adding weight to the assembly it moves relatively well. It did spec thin wall and I feel it is for this reason but I’ll play around a bit more and see if it can work. Otherwise I need some new 2 1/2”.

31
D.O.T. / Re: WDYDT (What Did You Do Today)
« on: February 12, 2024, 06:47:08 PM »
So it seems I’m running into an interference issue on my Y axis.
The spec was for .065 wall and all I could get was .188.
Having written that number I’m unsure how it even fit over the 2”.
It fits, it slides but only had minimal clearance that now assembled is not so bueno.

So off to find a piece that works.

On a lighter note we’re heading from the current balmy 5 degrees to a significantly cooler -25 tonight and possibly a tad more by Friday.

Is it vinyl? I have the costco laminated wood flooring and it suck big time. It does not like water at all, mine is a mess.

I hauled 35 boxes of the newer vinyl in the Dmax, abuot 1/2 pallet. Sat low but no issues.
It is 100% vinyl. Man the boxes are heavy. 50-60 pounds I’d wager per.
70 of them total plus a bit of other crap too.

33
D.O.T. / Re: WDYDT (What Did You Do Today)
« on: February 09, 2024, 10:33:42 AM »
Well Costco screwed up my plans.

We need to redo the flooring at our retirement place. Been looking and studying a bit on vinyl plank. Welp, we looked at a few places and had settled on the Lifeproof or whatever it’s called at Home Depot @ $5 a sq foot. We were good with that but were in no hurry to buy.

Well, enter the Costco shop…
They had whatever the heck we bought on for just under $2 and it passed the “The joints must be tough” test.

So the already half full bed of my truck was emptied. Mama was stil a-shopping…

After this the three other new 14 ply trailer tires went in to provide frontal protection for the window and another 16 boxes of flooring were added. The back seat was filled to capacity.

And at 75 psi in the air bags I hardly came off the overloads…eek.

20 minutes later we were at our kids place and rearranged everything but the flooring onto the trailer. It was raining, snowing, or both, so moving flooring into that wasn’t an option.

And I was grateful for the weight on the truck as the roads slushed and finally turned to glare ice.
Was a not fun wiggly slidey all over the place hour or so until we got ahead of the freeze line.

But part of it is the plasma table.
I’ll do a write up on it once it’s done.

Teaser.

Heading out this week to see the grandson and move stuff back and forth.
May be snagging a saw mill if the price is right at the auction. If not got plans for an other one Match time.
We had a heat wave hit…it’s currently 28 and raining. We’re leaving tonight, or at least were, no still are…less traffic… but yeah icy it will be.
We seen a couple days the past week 35 sort of thing. Totally not January and February weather.
I’ll take it however.

As for a bear gun boss, 10mm Glock as has been mentioned. Nothing beats more rounds to be able to put into said bear. Wheel gun is six. Only. And you will not have time to reload. And a 12 pipe with slugs. And we all agree you’re more doing it for HH6 so buy your new guns and enjoy.

Now, that's kind of interesting.

So you just use a common router to mill that plank bit by bit. Hmmm, lots of labor but in the end you actually have a usable slab.

I like that :likebutton:
And could be CNC capable with a few more bits added to the sled.

Well done sir!

The shear quite easily as I found out when the “left hand” threads on my oil pump turned out to be right hand. Luckily I noticed the misalignment occur or I would have been in trouble.

The ice roads are a whole nuther animal.

To throw a number out 80,000# tractor trailer requires minimum 36” good ice.
I recall when moving a D8 or maybe D9 they needed 48” Blue(good) ice and 48” pumped ice on top. Holes drilled and surface flooded repeatedly to build thickness.

A chart says a herc can land on 150cm or about 60”. 80000kgs/180000lbs.

Each road will have speed limits and spacing requirements to prevent blowouts as the ice bends under the weight. Too fast it will blowout when the wave reaches shore.
