2016 F150 3.5L ecoboost hard start
« on: June 24, 2018, 08:29:21 PM »
So I stumbled across this, amazingly the issue is identical to what I have described to the service tech at Ford. Also note this is the third time my truck has been to their shop. First time it had a fuel injection flush using BJ products. Second time it had both fuel pumps replaced under warranty. It has been doing this intermittently for the last 8k. I will be sending them this video tomorrow morning. I will report back what I find.

On another note I will be texting Norm this as his daughter has been having similar issues with her 2015 although that is a slightly different motor as the 2016 was second gen from my understanding.

That sounds like a very viable  cause to a problem, especially with the valves being open closed pending or how long the fuel leaked and so forth.  Good find!!

Update: Claim that the video is not my motor and doesn't apply.

At my insistence they kept the truck for an extra week to see if they could get it to do this random long start. As of last Thursday (super hot day here) they did get it to stumble start on one occasion on a hot start while it was hooked to computer. The data from the crank sensor didn't look right. So they were replacing that last Friday and asked to keep it thru the weekend to finish up Monday and test which I agreed thinking it was a good idea.

So this morning I get a call, they apparently came into the shop this morning with a big red puddle of transmission fluid under it. Appears to be front seal leaking and they are pulling the transmission now.....

I'm leaning more and more towards selling this......

sounds to me like that is all on their dime since they have been in control of it (for what 2 weeks?) !!!!!!!!

if I recall, I do believe GMC has a pretty big rebate off their 1500's..…..just sayin

It’s all under powertrain warranty. Nate, don’t tempt me I have $5k worth of GM card incentives too that I would like to cash in.....

The wife and I have also been discussing narrowing the fleet a bit. With Baylee driving that’s another vehicle to insure and have available for use if one breaks down. We’re limited on space here in hippy land so that would give me more work space in garage too. Within a year I’m going to have a second daughter with vehicle driving. Wife’s car will be close to 100k on odometer by years end. So we have discussed selling the truck, and trading in her Lexus. Get her something that fits the family & can pull a small trailer when we need it. Yes, Jeep can pull small trailer too. So we’ll see.....

Jeep pickup with diesel is supposed to be out early next year too....

I don’t think from my research I paid any less for the ford & the least expensive truck I ever drove was in fact a ford (2002 f-350 7.3l 4x4).....

Btw, you’re not helping.....

Does that motor site sideways in the bay?

To buy or to fix?

Straight, it will get fixed. Part of the problem currently is the two new vehicles I’m interested in are not yet released. Which is the bronco & the Jeep pickup....

I know a guy who has an amazing pickup for a growing family,  it’s red with lots of bed space.   Seems to be really well maintained. Reasonable price compared to all those new things with more potential issues you mentioned.

well heck yr all set man.... new transmission and crank sensor. Once you get it started it will work perfectly

I could be wrong but pretty sure you have to remove the entire intake/turbos to change injectors. And the real issue is likely the O-rings they seal with.

Dealer called, next week before I see truck back. Seal leaked while they were test driving it last week. They have had this happen on 2-3 other trucks (they sell a lot of trucks to ranchers and oil field) as they’re in Ft Collins near WY border.

So as a precautionary measure while they have it out the converter, pump, valve body and seal are all getting replaced.

Truck has 58k on it & I have coverage until 90k, this buys me two years. I do not plan on having it past 90k.

I'd just pressure your dealer who managed to ruin a transmission just sitting there waiting to be fixed, to work you a wonderful deal on a different problem LoL

FWIW the F250 rides as good or better than our "Heavy tow" F150 Eco Puke. Than you can be like me, drive up along side a Newer Chevy, get the drivers attention, and take my hands off the wheel and watch them panic LoL Chevy guys steer a LOT =)

Or you can explain to the Chevy guy looking at your 35" rubber lovingly that "ya I just put them on, no lift" drives nice.

Another fun thing to do is while they are pouring DEF in their new Durmax ya can say "ya I get 12mpg but its only $1.65 a gallon as you fill with E85 and smile.

Just some ideas....

Yea,
I don't like the Fords either

But, each to his own, I'm glad some of you are happy with them

I owned them before

one F150 Lightening truck, and two F250's, both diesels.

94 powerstroke, 5 speed 4.10 gear truck seemed OK, but these days, I think they are flat ugly

...Just my opinion

My sons and I play a game while driving

We call the game, "F-150"

The way it works is, before leaving for some destination, pick a number.

Each picks a different number

The number is your estimate for the actual number of F150's you will see enroute.

You will be absolutely amazed at how many you see out there

It all started a couple years ago when I made a random statement, "Boys, if you ever get into an accident with another vehicle, chances are it will be a black F150 that hit you."

Funny as it sounds, I'll bet if you take a drive, the odds are good that you will not only see a black F150, but actually see two of them in a row sometimes.

Try it...

Well, your post is interesting and some of it not far off. When I get ready I will be speaking with them about another Ford potentially and we will discuss the amount of days this one I bought from them spent in their garage versus mine...……..

LoL I actually have no brand loyalty whatsoever.

Ford F250- up: work trucks
Ram 2500-up work trucks
Chevy 2500 up old people 5th wheels haulers which is kinda like work right?

Just fact=)

and yah Don I see a F150 black even, every day in my driveway. I'd prefer a Chevy over the F150...see I am rational  also I can claim to not own the F150 thankfully.

F250  "work" trucks? How do they accomplish that while in a shop most of the time? Maybe it's considered a job just trying to drive them to the shop?

Not going to believe this...

Remember how I said that I told my pre-rangers that if they ever got into an accident they would be hit by a black F150?

Yesterday while walking out of HD with the youngest, he stumbles and nearly got hit by a...BLACK F150!

No joke!

Wasn't all that close, but cause a moment of reflection.

Then he remembered what I said and I saw the light come on.

He then started looking for black F150's

and

Counted SIX, yes SIX in the HD parking lot alone!

My daughter's husband drives one too...

So sad... :knucklehead:

Back to the HD store today after being at the pool with the family

Another six F150's sighted, two were black...No kidding.

Oh here is the other f150 on the job site today.

It’s our painter, I worked with him about eight years ago when I was a painter,  does a good job but doesn’t shower very often.

Ouch......

Every question I asked sales guy he didn’t know the answer to yesterday & I could find it on the sticker faster than he could. Kicker was he has sold toy’s for 20 years.....

Exactly what I went through. I didn't even know 4runners had an awd version. I will say, it doesn't "drag" like others we get in the shop. I think it has a fancy locking transfer case which helps.

Other thing is the limited version sits lower, less ground clearance. We do dispersed camping so I want a real 4x4.....
