Question to you knowledgeable (very) few

Suppose I just take the automatic transmission out altogether?

And install a 5 speed or a 6 speed NV trans. Would that make more sense than trying to sort through this torque converter to flywheel mismatch and how to get the electronic part of the trans (Overdrive) to work somewhat automatically?

Thinking out loud here boys and girlz. Haven't purchased the first drop of manual trans fluid yet...

Good idea? Bad idea???

I would like to get the thing running/driving and I am wondering if this isn't the overall easiest route to getting there.

Manual sure makes a lot of things simple with the exception of you needing to than install a clutch pedal but I bet you can faber cobble something together

My vote is to just have it fixed...still cheaper and easier, as long as the trans is good (hopefully)

Hey Don,

If your really going to get rid of that setup let me know, I would be interested in buying it from you.

One other thing to consider, can everyone that you plan on letting operate SqD, do they know how to drive a stick if you do convert it?  Something to consider!  If you are out somewhere and get hurt can the person with you drive the truck?

I think something along that line was stated when he was building the darned thing; hard to steer, shift, and reload, why not take one out of the equation. I was just thinking out loud, as I know we're promoting the heck out of the Zumbrota side of the company after the acquisition. Write ups make for good marketing:-)

Love to see it going again. I think going with the manual would be a great idea, from the beginning.

Now that the auto is in there, just get it going. Between linkages and drive shafts you would have a new buildup.

Funny you mention that, I just read a statistic that only 18% of the American population can drive a manual.

And now with self driving cars being touted about, they would have to be auto.

But with cars now being push button start, shift and even the parking brake, you could be safe for a long time.

JR, I don't think it would be all that difficult a process. Basically just a R&R installing the new stuff, find a pedal, see if the driveshaft lengths need adjusting and just like that, I'd be cookin' with bacon grease!

As for others not being able to drive a stick, I don't see that as a problem. I do however see a manual (Clutch) adversely affecting the ability to drive if I was all buggered up...

Don't get me wrong a manual would be great. Would like on in the sub too.

Only start stopping would really slow you down if hurt. Not real hard to shift on rpm, sure you could handle it.

If it were mine I would fix the auto, I just paid $600+ for a new rear shaft in the jk. Not to mention the trans issue is probably a half a day fix for a guy who knows what he’s doing & knows which parts to have on stand by. Nothing against you or your mechanics but if they don’t deal with that regularly then you get what I’m saying.

I'll be doing it myself
The mechanics are good, but they were not willing to use impact tools and hustle parts around. Since everything is painted up and pretty, they said they would have to handle everything more carefully (Slower) which at their hourly rate would really cost me a bundle.
Besides, I did this so I guess I should take the beating and fix it myself.

Leave it the way it is and get it running. No need to swap transmission at this point. However if the cost to fix is more than you wish to put on the line, then sell it and look for a new project, like the XJs you want to build. How many headaches have you had since this project started and how many do you think you're going to continue to have whilst fighting the timelines?

You can potentially part it out or sell whole and cover the cost of purchasing and most upgrades/fixes on the potential XJs or a new project, or fix Sarge or get something you need down on the farm.

Bobby, you been talking to my Frau?

She wants me to part it out or sell it complete.

She (Rightly??) thinks I have too many irons in the fire, and need to move on from this headache. She points out that we have grandkids, commitments, a farm, a house to constantly repair, and did I mention, we have a farm?

So, yea. Phil is interested in the transmission. The motor would go quickly for a pretty good penny considering what it is. But after that, I think it would be a slow process. I'd never recover for the countless hours, and that truck is now in really great shape.

My inclination is to fix it and drive it some.

Well, I do appreciate the help offers.

The motor is sorted out, now only the
1. Torque converter fitment
2. Hydro brake system keeps blowing out seals
3. Figuring out how to get the trans to shift while having no computer any longer
and
I think that is about it for the big issues.

But you know how work, works, right

First rule of work: You must first work just to be able to work

Second rule: Work begat work

Therefore, by starting, all I am really doing is setting up for an engine overhaul, repainting the hood, replacing the ring and pinions, and rewiring the headlights...

Here is a link for a kit for the tranny. Little pricey but you can do it on your own too.

Thanks JR

Only thing I see with this kit that I question is that it is made for a 47RH. I have a 46RH transmission, no lockup converter.

LoL I am trying to understand? Swap to a manual now? I have Done this swap a few times.......

You need a Nv4500/Getrag transmission.
29 Spline transfer case
flywheel/bellhousing (For which ever trans your using)
Clutch
Blockplate
Pedals/hyd slave/master/under dash brace for the master
Cross-member
Both driveshafts

Other small parts.

This is a lot more work than just sourcing the correct block plate, flex plate combination. Bolting in a simple floor dimmer switch for the OD, and going for a drive.

2-4 hours to sort the trans....probably the same with the brakes...yr driving.

The 29 spline transfer cases are bringing close to a grand these days in nice shape used. A new NV 4500 is what $1700? (you want the newer updated 5th gear/shaft/nut like I used in Anvil)... Clutch that can handle a healthy cummins is $1500. (the south bend dual disc in Anvil was $2100)  Bell housing for the NV4500 $450 (advance adapters)

Driveshafts will be another expense. (The Stick shift trucks use thicker rear tube material for a reason)

I dunno Don.........

It seemed like it was so close.  Admittedly, I didn't read every recent post about it though.

I'm a little saddened by that, as square d was what brought me here.  If you made that truck a crew cab, it'd pretty much be my dream truck. Lol

Square D is what started this whole thing.  I think it washed away with the last wave of hurricanes that ran the south over.  Or Don turned it in that new wood burner stove he has.

Its not dead, not by a long shot

So it has some issues and I took it to some good mechanics to sort through them. They did a good job finding out what was wrong with the drive train and got the engine running well. It still has no brakes and no functioning hydroboost system. No clue at this point what's up with that

The cost of those investigations was way big @ $120/hour. so I did a stand down for awhile.

There is a very large sum of money owed to me. Should it arrive the plan was to get right back on it, and until then, just wait it out. We are in the last days of "waiting it out. I can't go on forever and leave it there. I'd have thought it would have been done a long time ago, so soon, I may have to take it back.

Right alongside all of that, my farm and another project that grabs my time, has, well, grabbed a lot of my time. SquareD has suffered. But perhaps for long enough. Maybe it's getting to be time to bring it home...???

Oh, we understand. Lots of stuff on the table for sure.

Since you know the issues, maybe let someone look at who plays with things like us and they might see something.

Yea, for sure!

Maybe after the boiler project is in and running and I have a decent stack o' wood in the garage next to it. I have a repaint project for C-Max, but then I might be clear enough to get back on it...in a heated garage :-))  !
