« on: July 27, 2017, 07:52:25 PM »
That does look good Tate....I think what gets a lot of people in trouble is the "all or nothing" mentality. I love beef, its what's for dinner any time I can. I like pork a lot too. Chicken and fish I will eat but don't go out of my way to have it. I will absolutely eat an all veggie meal if I feel like it. I am a big fan of beans and rice with veggies. But part of that is cause I KNOW I will also be having beef or pork or something later in the week. If I felt I had to have only veggies forever it would be much much harder -as in Id probably go full Mongol if that were presented to me (some Mongol nomads eat only meat  :likebutton:).

My mom tried to tell me tofu was chicken when I was about 12 years old (mom was a hippie or would have been one if she had been born 10 years later)....I told her it wasn't chicken, it didn't taste like chicken and I hated it. I haven't seen any reason to change my opinion of tofu in the last 43 years.

My buddy does construction and a lot of work on Beacon Hill in Boston which is tight for a darn Smartcar. He drives a Dodge Cummins Tradesman CCLB, how he gets in and out of there in that beast is beyond me.

Got a new camera and was all excited to get used to is (leaving with the family for a 12 day trip Monday) but instead got to work until midnight and back at it today. All the work you have to do to just get ready to go away can be a PITA.

But I'm excited to have a DSLR I can take some real pics with! Now if I can figure out the 7,435 functions I might be able to take reasonable pictures!

I want to see this in a mini-gun form.

I'm torn in stuff like this but I guess in baby steps at least acknowledging that kids should fight back in some manner is better than teaching them to do nothing. I do think learning to throw them accurately is a logical next step.

One of the Stihl reviews I read was a guy throwing in his truck for a camping trip in addition to his gasser. He had a similar review but I don't think he cut as much as you did, that's a lot. He praised the quiet and how much he was able to cut with a single battery. I think k you sold me....gotta add this to the list of tools. Thanks!

Curious how well those work for light work around the house? Lots of times I don't feel like firing up the Farm Boss (or want to try being stretched on a ladder using it for pruning) and have wondered about them. I saw good reviews on the Stihl version but like that I could double up on the battery flexibility with the DeWalt stuff. Love to see your review of it.

Coffee Induced Early Morning Rant / Mexico warning
« on: July 21, 2017, 10:54:37 AM »
I have never been to Mexico. Have no real desire to go. I remember hearing a number of years ago about a couple from our town who went to Cancun at the same time I went to FL. This was late fall end of hurricane season....a hurricane came across the Carribean/Gulf and hit the Yucatan and then came straight back across the gulf and hit FL where I was (which I guess is par for the course for late season hurricanes).

I was safe in the hotel I was at (it was the hurricane evacuation location for the area) while they were evacuated to a school with 500 other people and were all in a HS gym with a white bucket in the corner for a bathroom. But they were "happy" because the HS was surrounded by a fence with barbed wire so the roaming gangs couldn't get in while people at other resorts had been evacuated to places that did not have the protection of a fence and ended up getting robbed etc by the gangs. Point being a resort is nice but you are still in a 3rd world he**-hole when you leave it.

But then I read this article which just confirmed for me that there are risks beyond just hurricanes etc. Figured I should post it as a cautionary item....maybe its overly dramatic I don't know. But scary stuff...

Cows and the like (ruminants) have sections within their stomachs but the biggest difference in my mind is that they don't digest their own food- they have bacteria in their stomachs that break down the grasses etc. into something else which they can then get energy from. That's why cows introduced to sagebrush or other pastures with plants they are not "used to" can have full stomachs and starve to death (the oils in sage will kill off the bacteria in a cows stomach unless they are very slowly introduced to it). We don't have that. We do not digest plants the same way that cows, deer, elk etc. do.

No we are not pure carnivores, we are omnivores so our teeth allow us to eat different food types, but that includes meat which can only be torn by sharp pointed teeth (well until silverware came along).

I do think the eyes are a dead giveaway though. Before we were warriors we were hunters. And only hunters and meat eaters have eyes like that. All the pure plant eaters (aka PREY) have their eyes on the sides of their heads which allow a significantly greater field of vision to see predators and run away. But all the predators need the greater accuracy that forward facing eyes provide. Yes it certainly helps in battle as well. But the primary use was to get food in my mind. If we were only eating plants we would not need that accuracy and eyes on the sides of our heads would be fine (and helpful).

But hey, at the end of the day every one has to do what they feel fits them best. And if that's all plants then good for you. I'm not going to say anyone shouldn't. The only "bad" thing I have seen is people who don't do enough research and get the right amount of proteins and amino acids that they need, which is generally provided in the meats we consume.

223

Sweet looking engine Ken.....those big blocks are just so great. And I love The Judge- from how the GM designers conned the execs into thinking they were producing a different car when they wanted a muscle car all along, to the sound of that big block rumble. Just so great.

Got back from my fishing trip yesterday. So great being without electronics of any type for 3 days. We were the only ones fishing on the lake. So awesome. Moose, loons, eagles, kingfishers, and brook trout. What a great time. There is something religious about gliding a canoe over glass like water as the sun is setting. The silence becomes loud. Just so soul cleansing. But back to the grind today!

Make sure you get enough protein. Many vegans/vegetarians don't get enough protein which leads to other issues/problems.

Im not going to try to dissuade you. You have to do what you have to do and i hope you find a path that gets you the results you want.

As for what we were intended to eat I think the canine teeth we have and the fact that our eyes face forward suggests meat is a primary part of our diet. Not saying anti-biotic laden stuff but meat is a part of what we have always eaten imho.

I can see it now. There is Don on the farm squeezing in (nice HF chair BTW) and it starts to roll. Ends up in the pond with his body weight acting like a bobber in the tank.

I was not a Besvis and Butt head fan but I did see one clip of one of them rolling down a hill in a big tire....made me think of that.

I agree getting enough pump (and proper sizing) to keep pressure strong wherever you run it. I wss thinking for fire suppression too although I'm guessing a gas powered pump from the pond would be better than using thsee tanks for that. You can buy used fire hose cheap as departments replace them all the time used or not.

Good deal dave. Good luck on finding the new place.

Nice fish! My favorite trout recipe was for little stream caught brookies....after the heads were off rolled in an egg wash, corn meal and fried in a cast iron skillet with a touch of salt. Four of those between two slices of bread (bones and all) and I was a happy camper. Well after 4 or 5 of them sammiches I was. But we were fishing brooks that had waaaay too many brookies in then to begin with so catching and eating them by the bucket load could be considered a "conservation " method. Ha.

Heck that was better that what my fisheries professor in the mountains of CO suggested we do with bookies (he hated brookies as an invasive "trout" killing off the native cutthroats)....he said just throw that trash fiah in the bushes. LOL. funny how even "conservationists" will get their backs up on certain things. I still thought they tasted good!  :cheesy:

I've read about that little boy and saw an interview with his Mom on Fox. Very cool.

One of the most telling things for me as far as the difference between Trump and Obama (besides the obvious list which could go to hundreds of pages) was when Trump got on Marine One the other day and the hat of one of the Marine's guarding the chopper blew off. Trump went and got it, put it on his head, it blew off again and Trump went to get it again. He ended up letting the General or whoever he was walking with get it but I just could not EVER imagine Obama doing something like that. I could totally see George W doing that too. But Obama and his half-assed dismissive salutes to guys who swore to protect him used to turn my stomach. SO glad I never have to watch that crap any more.

I have same one, I suspect the metal/aluminum bits could be replaced. The big tear, however, will not be so easy if possible to fix.

Yup.....when I commented I was looking on my phone and didn't notice that it had torn away from the front part....I thought it was maybe just struts etc under.

I forget what set I bought for the yukon but the front ones were a thick pliable rubber that stayed put even w/minimal "nubs" (that's the technica term donchaknow? )... but the back seat one is like a hard plastic molded tray....fortunately it went all the way across the back and the fitment around the back of the console and the legs of the back seat keep it in place but it curls a bit and moves up/down slightly. Definitely shoddy compared to the fronts. But those front ones hold a ton or water which is great in the winter for sure.

Wilbur, Are you looking only new? Or a specific Duramax engine version? No DEF... etc..

I'm prob looking new (or close to it). I don't have the knowledge to build an older version and plus in this neck of the woods older means rusted to heck and back. I could look out west but would prefer to have a dealer as back up if I was going used (certified and the like). But who knows. Still in the investigation mode.

Just thinking out loud here.......

Maybe heavier duty tires....

Maybe an extra helper spring or 2........

3500 i believe has a long bed option.........

Maybe different gearing.........

Maybe different programing on the different control modules. .......

Current Duramax (2500 and 3500) have basically the same body style options but no DRW on the 2500, that's only for the 3500- Just no double cab with a short bed in the 3500

2500- no DRW option
Reg Cab w/8' bed SRW
Double cab (the short 2nd door setup) with 6.5' bed or 8' bed SRW
Crew Cab (the longer 2nd door) 6.5' bed or 8' bed with SRW

3500
Reg Cab w/8' bed SRW
Reg Cab w/8' bed DRW
Double cab (the short 2nd door setup) with 8' bed SRW
Double cab (the short 2nd door setup) with 8' bed DRW
Crew Cab (the longer 2nd door) 6.5' bed or 8' bed with SRW
Crew Cab (the longer 2nd door) w/ 8' bed with DRW

With the Duramax the only gearing option is the 3.73, the gas has the 4.10

what about finding another similar age one with a gasser but one with a body in better shape.....swap the Cummins to it....put the gasser in this one and sell it for a field truck. Might not cost you that much net (or who knows....at the right price come out really lowering your cost) and then you have the Cummins without having to do a ton of body work.

See how handy I am with your money and your time!  :cheesy:

245
I was comparing SRW versions and found no difference. The last thing I noticed the DRW 3500 was the same spring as the 2500 "with increased capacity". And the front torsion bars appear the same as well.

Thanks guys....so I wasn't losing my mind! ha.

« on: July 10, 2017, 10:23:43 AM »
Saw this last night with the wife. After putting Nica down last week I checked to make sure this one didn't end up with the dog dying in it (sorry for the spoiler) or something that would have just set the wife off all over again, but when I saw that it didn't I thought it might be good to see. And it was. You guys know better than me if they did a good job showing the  parts in Iraq so I wont try to make any claims to its accuracy on that front but it was great seeing the bond that developed between them, and that I believe would be accurate. Good movie. I liked it.  We just had a hard time finding it....only 1 theatre near us had it and at 10:30 PM unfortunately.

Here's the IMDB on it:

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt4899370/

247
So I'm looking at trucks (want a Duramax) and while I usually will price them at GMC.COM so I can make them just the way I want, I also look at what dealers have already in stock as that may be a cheaper way to get one if a dealer has one they cant move or whatever. Some times they have what I want, some times they don't. So I was comparing what I would need to buy if I wanted to add (say) the plow package to a truck that didn't have it (I also look at this because it bugs me I cant get a sliding rear window with the plow package unless I get a Denali which I don't want to pay for). And I also thought okay....what if I find a 3/4 ton that has everything I needed but I wanted to upgrade it to a 1 ton what would that entail....so I was comparing part numbers at gmpartsonline.com and other sites and was surprised to see there were no differences between the rear springs in the 3/4 ton and the 1 ton. Do I have that right? I knew the driveline was the same but I figured the springs would be different for the 3500 v. the 2500 but the front torsion bars and the rear springs seem to be the exact same ones? Am I missing something?

I was looking at the #10 cans and those seemed pretty good but I hadn't compared them to Amazon. The single serve pouches are a lot more per meal, but handy for one person.

I'm not familiar with Thrive so thanks for posting this.

wyo- double thanks....the cases of 6 #10 cans from Amazon are definitely much lower than what I saw at Overstock. I had seen prices against the sponsored ones in Google search so Overstock seemed cheap (I should have known right?! )  I do see WalMart has the same price for the #10 cans as Amazon (WalMart has dramatically increased the number of SKU's they carry online (I am sure in response to Amazon) so I find myself checking prices there a lot now too).

Maybe you could do a thread on Thrive some time...curious (beyond what you showed) what the plusses are versus the "tried and true" MH. Always tough for companies to get a foothold in a space where someone has dominating market share but like to learn about them. Also good to know alternatives.

But this whole thing is making me think about the dehydrator route myself.

Thanks Nate! I was surprised to see I had read some of those already but had not seen all that put together in a list like that. Some great knowledge there for sure! I love brisket. I just need to do more of them. I'm hoping if we can ever finish our house project to make it a regular thing.
