Title: SquareD Part 8, This thing ever going to get finished?
Post by: Flyin6 on February 23, 2017, 08:56:09 PM
Today I was cleaning out the garage a little. There was this huge pile of dust. When I started to remove it, I discovered a really cool old Dodge truck beneath it, in somewhat like a preserved condition.
We have been messing with this truck, what now, 4-5 years?

Well, I'm back on it with today's emphasis on trying to get it idling better and working off the immense punch out list.

First I checked all the fuel lines, putting a wrench on each fitting. Everything was tight, but it started with some difficulty and idled roughly. Afterward I had a garage all filled up with the white smoke again and the unburned fuel was doing it's final burning in my Mark-1 eyeballs

It has had a long term seep/leak of transmission fluid from someplace...Guess I'll have a look at that tomorrow

After snugging up the fuel lines I went all over it checking various things for proper installation. I found the boost gage was not hooked up, so I took care of that

Next I set the idle up a bit and that definitely helped matters a bunch. Perhaps I had it idling too low to create enough fuel pressure to idle well. I'll try and figure out how to get the tach hooked up and working so I can actually check the idle RPM

It's a trick little bugger to get to, the idle screw, that is

So here is the idle now, after setting it up a wee bit

There's a bunch of mechanical noise from this tractor motor!

And it will not rev up without sputtering, popping, and back firing

I know, everyone is going to say timing. but it is set properly. Fuel pressure was OK, when last I checked it, but I'll install a FP gage soon to monitor that better

I think I am done with monkeying with that engine. I'll shift gears, get some brakes and some other things reattached and have it taken to s 12 valve specialist to sort it all out

The front springs are holding their own. They settled to being dead flat, having started with a positive arch and maybe 2" taller. I'll shove another leaf or two in each pack and then readjust the rear height/ I do not want the truck getting much taller, it's at the comfortable limit for off camber driving

I agree with this. It may be a really small issue but one of those ones that someone cant find without years of "been there done that" knowledge. It's not bad to call for help when you've exhausted all possibles/reasonables. And that's too nice a truck to be a dust collector.

the kaiser doing something similar.. not quite to the same extreme. but def runs alittle rough under throttle. if you bump the fuel quick, it revs and then comes down.. and shuts off. i'm leaning towards lift pump as well. but need a FP gauge to confirm as well.

I picked up this new creeper. The old one has some broken wheels and contains a nice puddle of trans fluid

I wasn't getting full accelerator pedal travel. I traced down the problem to a cable that was too long. I snipped it down like an inch! That made for a lot more travel, but the motor refuses to rev up very much. Something is definately wrong with the Cummins, but I'm not worrying about it anymore.

Like I said yesterday, I am focusing on getting the thing able to stop for now. That means connecting the master cylinder
to the brake pedal. The hydro brake system does not match up exactly with the brake pedal mount, things are just too close. I decided to remove the pedal and add an extension onto it and get more working room.

Then I found another section of 1/4" steel to weld to the backside of the pedal. I ground a generous angle on each component so I'd get a complete weld

Hmmmmm...it idles fine. It sounds ok at the tail pipe when idling. You rev it, it then sounds like the injectors are not getting to pop pressure.

When you get the fuel pressure gauge.... check the pressure at idle and then again when it starts missing. If ya see no drop I'd wager it's time you find a new injection pump...or like you said, let a pump shop make it run.

I got the fuel pressure gage ordered. But looking around, I am running out of real estate to mount stuff.

I am now thinking once again, about ripping out the entire stock dash and just starting over with my own aircraft style design. By canning everything, I could reposition the gauges in a manner that makes sense and unclutteres the area. I could bury the radio stack like we do in aircraft and fit all sorts of things into the wasted space behind the factory dash.

No decisions, but just looking. I have to find room for the fuel pressure gage, and the aft fuel tank fuel level gage. The speedo no longer works since I hacked out the computer, and half the lights in the dash are inop for reasons I can not determine

After cleaning the old parts up, I gave them a fresh coat of grease and reinstalled the brake pedal.

This was not a 5 minute operation. I had to keep adjusting things while working on my side or upside down. It wasn't fun, but in the end, the pedal got installed solidly

The alignment looks off, but it isn't. What you are seeing is a slight offset misalignment, but the rod angles up somewhat. It is much stronger than the stock setup ever thought of being

I'm having a hard time getting momentum going, I keep running into roadblocks. For example, I wanted to mount the aux fuel tank fuel level gage, but didn't have a cup, and I couldn't find a spot I liked to mount the thing.

So I moved to the drivers door panel. The plywood I purchased a year ago for the project has warped slightly, but worst of all, it was too small a section to make a full panel! ERRRRRR>>>>

I initially wanted to get the brake lines reinstalled, but I can't for the life of me figure out how to adapt the new 3/16" brake lines to the factory proportioning valve.

I am holding to the plan to get the brakes working, the transmission showing a desire to move and the thing generally ready to pull onto a trailer, then take it to a specialist to get the engine sorted.

That sucks Don. Try just writing out what you know you need. I hate that feeling and maybe it means take a step back and just methodically write down every step you need to do for eachildren item. Then start with the one that's easiest to finish. Then the next easiest one to finish. For me I like getting stuff crossed off the list so if I do the "easiest" ones (a relative term here I realize) first then I feel like I'm making progress which emotionally can be a big battle. When I find myself stymied and keep beating my head agains the wall I usually end up throwing stuff and walking away. But that's me.  :embarrassed:

Could you make a small piece of brake line that has the 3/16 female on one end and then a factory male end on the proportioning valve side?

Wait, that wouldn't work now that I think about because the line sizes are different.

Is there anybody there that makes any kind of lines? I had one of our parts stores send of the pump end of my power steering line on the 92 and the box end of the 74. They sent it to a shop in Tucson to have made and the braised them to a hydraulic crimpable end, then they put a hydraulic line in the middle and crimped it in their machine.... hope that makes sense.

In other words braise two different line sizes together with proper ends to go from 3/16 to factory???

Or just get a step up brass fitting for at the proportioning valve?

Realistically the dash could be last, or I guess would be if it was my project.
It could be, but with my running out of space for stuff and the need for two more gages, it's time.

However getting the truck to motivate is first.

With the fuel pressure gage installed I can get a good read on the health of the injection pump. If that's faulty, I'll just pull it myself and save the trip to the tuner. Find a reputable shop, tell them what I want the engine to do, then start signing checks.

Be a good write-up if nothing else.

I'm also still sniffing around the silverado rear springs. 64" vs 52"  Shackle flip, vs factory under-slung configuration. More load capacity from the silvy springs...lots of grindin' and fine little metal filings in my hair skin and eyeballs...What's not to like about that?

Yes, the prop. Valve is pictured in your first photo. Except that mine looks different (3/4T W250 vs 1/2T RC??) and is located inside the frame "C" which in my case, is now boxed in.

It dose not, I hate those inverted flare fittings they use on cars.  I converted everything downstream of the "quad" fitting to AN and SS lines.  Only use the factory stuff because I had it and was in good shape.

Thease are the adapters I used and I ran -3 AN lines

Ah yes, AN fittings...

I could do that, never thought of that. Was trying to keep if close to the factory configuration, steel lines.

Get one of these, or go to the parts house and sift through theirs with valve and line in hand. You have a flaring tool don't ya?

On all my off road trucks I swap the lines & fittings to AN, it's just good insurance. If you blow a flex hose etc on the trail you can disconnect, pull a spare cap from the tool bag to isolate said line & keep on going with a three brake motion.......

Being that this is supposed to be bug out vehicle it should get the same treatment, granted it may never get finished in time but that's not the point here now is it?

Didn't know that existed

I'll think about how I want to do it tomorrow

I'm sitting here thinking about what the effect might be to just can the prop valve...

I have the adjustable valve installed in the rear line already

But the proportional valve allows for a variance of pressure to the rear brakes as set hydrauically, by the front line pressure. Do I have that right?

I recall my 1987 W150 as having a front to rear swap problem. Sometimes I'd hit the brakes in that truck and wham-o, just like that, I'd be facing the opposite direction wondering why I was doing 35 in reverse!

^^^What Shawn said^^^^

Phil, putting my summit order together. Will be a conversion to AN fittings, that just makes good sense

Two different parts, one of each? Or some other combo?

Another thought...Should I buy a new prop valve? You may recall that somewhere along the way, I pulled mine apart and cleaned the thing and installed new O-rings. New, or go with as-is?

Remember, I am likely looking at buying a new or rebuilt injection pump for the 6BT that continues to smoke me out...

Hey Don, couple things

I would go with the prop valve you have for the time being, you can always use the fittings even if you go to a different prop valve you can reuse the fittings, are you just going to convert those areas or the whole system down stream of the valve?

Don't forget AN fittings are 37degree flare, ALSO remember the valve you installed for the rear is not a prop valve its a metering valve, there is a big difference so be aware of how you think and what it actually dose.

For your IP PLEASE check the oblivious first, get some gauges and make sure you have good pressure AND flow going to the IP.  Don't make your life more difficult than it already is.   it took me a long time to get my RC correct but now I would have no problem jumping in and driving cross country or Alaska again.

Don, summit has some really cool push together type lines that might work well on that. You don't need high pressure, just fuel lines.

I have some myself for the new coolers on the dmax.

Copy all
I know about the AN thing, have used it for decades

I might go from the prop valve to a compression fitting/AN adapter fitting and run a shorter piece of high press AN nylon line instead of running the whole length. Summit is two days out max so will have this bird cooked this week.

Inj pump...Well I have checked everything and it is all checking out. It acts approximately the same as it did on the first time I started it up. I even pulled the pump down a bit to check things. On that check we discovered some very fine brass fillings in one of the chambers of the whatever it is called valve that bolts to the injection line itself.

I'll get it...

That part of the system runs at 1200 psi...

High pressure nylon core lines are called for here my friend!

I meant the fuel system you keep working on since D isn't up yet.

Of course not big AN for your power brakes, unless you go air brakes!!

I really should have gotten after the brakes or the fuel pressure gage, but I wanted to get the door panel on with some real live door handles, and that long awaited mount for the shotgun I have talked about.

The plan was to create a new plywood panel encased in fiberglass and finished to serve as the mount. I went as far as to cut out a panel, but when fitting it, I discovered the interior door panel is not flat, but has several protrusions. That all but makes a solid panel unbuidable (Easily) and since I didn't want another long winded project on this truck, I abandoned it

I ended up drilling the factory panel and used stainless allen head screws to fasten it to the door. Probably should have done this in the first place

If you look at the bottom aft corner closely, you may notice some threaded studs sticking through the holes in the panel. Reason is, they will serve to fasten the lower muzzle catch for the 12 gage which will live there in the near future.

Hey chief, this may be your guy...

Tlane, if you start at the beginning of this thread it has some if not all the issues.
I don't remember it all, but lots of white smoke, rough idle, no acceleration from idle etc.
If it's not all in this thread it's unfortunately in one of the previous three.
I suspect if Don calls it could be summed up rather easily.

Lol sorry Don.

What going on with the Cummins? Does it run or it runs rough?
Like Sam stated, lots of detailed information throughout this thread, but in essence
I have checked and double checked the timing. I believe we set it at 16 degrees, but it's been so long I may not be correct about that
I pulled and replaced the pressure regulator valve on the output of the Bosch injection pump
I replaced the lift pump
and
checked the pressure, which I believe I have detailed with pics earlier. It was good at idle
When I try to rev the thing it just coughs and sputters and almost refuses to really rev up much
It blows out carpets of fuel rich white smoke
It occasionally makes a mechanical sound, something like the starter being bumped against a running engine.
I do not like that sound.
Oil pressure is normal
Fuel is fresh
I have a dual line inlet
and way back when, I recall when I was installing that dual line, the front plug was torqued to like one million ft/lbs. I had a big 1/2? breaker bar to finally break it loose. When It let go it did so with a shriek, almost a breaking sound. I thought at that time that I actually broke the injection pump apart. But the motor started, and the pump doesn't leak, so I suppose the pump may be OK.
The turbo revs very quickly (Small exhaust housing)
The motor does the same thing with either the marine injectors or the stockers, no appreciable difference
Title: Re: SquareD Part 8, This thing ever going to get finished?
Post by: Flyin6 on March 21, 2017, 12:56:11 PM
I have a fuel pressure gage sitting on my desk awaiting install, but presently I have a saw-mill to assemble and install down at the farm

Norm suggested the injectors don't seem to be reaching their pop pressure meaning the inj pump is toast
Pump:
Laser fully cut delivery valves
4000 RPM spring
#5 fuel plate
Dual fuel inlet
Factory lift pump, fed by two lift pumps making around 5-6 psi before the mechanical pump, no restrictions, 1/2" fuel line
Factory injector lines
New Bosch Marine injectors
Fresh motor, just over hauled
Marine pistons
Head studs
Good gaskets
Stock bore size
3 angle valve job
150# valve springs

3 things.

1. I've been watching Square D since before this forum was created and have read all the pages. Theres alot of reading! Lol so that summary helps.
2. White smoke = unburnt fuel. So with that being said the pump pressure either sucks, or its out of time by a tooth.
3.get me the engine serial number. 8 digits, probably starts with 7. And i will check out the pump specs on Quickserve.

Well, the sticker on the top side of the timing gear case is gone

The long factory tag below that has all sorts of information

I noticed an "Engine no. 5623981"

It has a build date of 03-28-95

And I noticed the timing was indicated to be 12.5 BTDC

There is an engine family number, a catalyst number, and a rather long "reference number"

But no serial number. I think I recall seeing that on the tag that was scraped off when I tightened on that front fuel feed line

Ok, since i haven't got the full esn yet, i filled the extra number in with one that gave me a 5.9 b series with the p7100 inline pump, built in Aug of 1995. Close enough.
Minimum pressure to the injection pump at high idle must be 18 psi.
Didnt see if this was covered. But this is the first step, aside from making sure you have fuel in  the tank lol

Going with JR's recommendation, I picked up a master brake fitting selection from summit. With this I was able to figure out the fittings I needed. It helped me determine what fittings to select for the master cylinder as well
Title: Re: SquareD Part 8, This thing ever going to get finished?
Post by: Flyin6 on April 01, 2017, 08:07:31 PM
Something like this with an inverted flare seemed to be the strongest candidate, but this fitting does not accept another fitting to adapt to the 3/16 SAE thread
Title: Re: SquareD Part 8, This thing ever going to get finished?
Post by: Flyin6 on April 01, 2017, 08:08:44 PM
After trying everything and coming up null, I spied my selection of steel lines. I grabbed a 1/4" line and it screwed right in like it was meant to!
Title: Re: SquareD Part 8, This thing ever going to get finished?
Post by: Flyin6 on April 01, 2017, 08:11:33 PM
But...The 1/4" line was too large for the master cyl, and I had no way to reduce the line to 3/16"...what to do??

So to capture this for future generations, the aft port is 7/16 X 24 and I used a fitting with a 3/16" bore
Title: Re: SquareD Part 8, This thing ever going to get finished?
Post by: Flyin6 on April 01, 2017, 08:14:47 PM
Now the interesting part is that the 95 Dodge 2500 master cylinder which utilizes a hydro brake setup is metric. So the top of the line requires a M10 X 1.5 with a 3/16" bore. If you get these two fittings and have the ability to flare your own line, then you can adapt the later (Much mo-better hydro brake system to the earlier brake system

I stacked some stainless washers onto both sets of studs to space the valve inward toward vehicle center to make it easier to work on.
Title: Re: SquareD Part 8, This thing ever going to get finished?
Post by: Flyin6 on April 01, 2017, 08:16:38 PM
Luckily, I had made the lines plenty long enough, so I decided to simply re-engineer the existing line by adding the new fittings to make it all fit

So with this sort of in the bag, I discovered two new problems. First I have a very strange brake pedal travel. It seems to push against a spring for 80% of its travel, then finally "bite" into some solid hydraulic pumping action. I suspect the rod length is improperly set, or the brake pedal linkage needs adjusting. All of that is either adapted or homemade

And secondly, I have this to deal with:

Those would be two enlarging pools of brake fluid!!!!!!

A quick inspection told me, well jogged my memory. I had left the flex lines loose to the calipers because I didn't have fresh copper washers. I use them once then discard. So whenever I pulled the calipers down to fix something else, I never followed up with the new washers. I don't have any on hand so in the morrow, I'll go find some...

The lack of tight on the caliper lines may explain some of the odd pedal travel too.

Guys, he's working on the brakes, that really only leaves the engine... :beercheers:

I never noticed this before, but the brake line is all up in the lower shock mount. That is a chafe away from a brake failure!

So first of all, I made up some standoff's to positioned the brake line 1.5" further north which placed it away from the flange area and away from things

With the brake lines connected to the front calipers, I refilled the master cylinder and checked for leaks.

This time I was leak free. but there is definitely something funky with respect to that brake pedal travel that bears some teardown and investigation.

While I was in the area, I mounted the fuel pressure sending unit, and ran the wire through my previously silicone rubber bulkhead

With the gage in hand, I really do not have a good place to mount it.

That has me looking at all that wasted dash space. I am having trouble justifying keeping that stock plastic in there when a simple flat panel with a hood would free up so much space...

I see a lot about brakes. But no pressure readings for fuel. You dont need brakes right now. Its already stopped. Brakes are for when the truck actually moves. Of which it is not.

I'm a miserable failure with regard to getting this truck done.

It's fighting me

Like one and goal, 4th down three seconds on the clock and the super bowl title hanging on this one play. It just kicks back every time I take a stab at it.

Couple that with all the work needed farmside and I am devoting a ton of time to another thing I work on, and all that equals what you see (or don't see) here

Apologies

I know it's probably blasphemy, BUT, why not load it up and take it to a shop and have them finish it for you. It won't take them much to get it fully drivable. Then you can focus on making the other fun parts of it and not have to constantly walk by it in the garage and think, "you dang truck, why do you have to be such a turd."

You've got a trailer, I'm sure you have some friends there who would be willing to help load it and if not, you've got a tractor and a winch.

This way it'll be out of you hair for a short spell and when it comes back you'll have a fully running rig.

But again, that might be crazy talk.

Well as a Pats fan the right answer was to pass.

Update:

I sprayed the dust off...It has become layered, like you see in layering of sedimentary rock on an exposed cliff.
I charged the battery
I removed the incorrect deep cycle battery and mounted it to my camper
I hooked a long dog leash to the pintle to keep Scout around while I'm washing him.
I think I did something else, but can't remember what...Oh yes, I sat in it and adjusted the mirrors!

Why this happened you ask?

Leaf springs...

You see, I was wanting to install the longer...much longer silverado leaf springs on the truck but I can't.

Not because the truck doesn't run...But because I'd never hear the end of it from you knuckleheads

"I can't believe you're working on a truck that doesn't run!"
"When are you going to get it running"
"Spending more money on the truck that will not move"
"Hey, Don, find any lost and unused large metal objects in your garage lately?"
"I'm so out of here, waiting on this thing to get finished!"
"I can't live my life vicariously without my nightly feeding on SquareD posts and pics"
"Man! My addiction is real! Work on the DA_ TRUCK, will ya!"
"I never knew this level of frustration...Not since my last kid was born and the wife..."
"I never knew it was possible to hate someone just because he wasn't working on HIS truck!"
"I'm just about done with this site! It was only about that darn truck for me, and I would have lost my mind, but then there was this other component of the place...All this talk of God, yea, I guess that is OK too..."
"I have sowed my LIFE into reading about this truck...Since he stopped working on it, it has felt like I lost an old friend!"
"I think I have become depressed...No really! You go and start reading right here on part 1, see what it does to you!"

There you guys, said it all for ya!
What are friends for anyway?

OK, off to the farm for the kid in the cammo shorts!

I know it must cause all kinds of turmoil for you to yield to the infamous smoke show, but you've made a good solid decision.
Get er running properly, then finish up the punch list in your spare time...like you have some...

And you're absolutely right about the ribbing you would have gotten.

It's got to be something simple IMO, but the fact of the matter is what...
Let the pros sort it, and then you might even be able to have it move under its own power.

"Who cares? I didn't like that truck anyways!"
"I didn't come here to watch you pay someone to fix that mess!!"
"Thank God for my friends on this site, and thank God someone's going to fix that boat anchor!!"

Too harsh?   :)

^^^^ Love your spirit and commitment, man!

I've been busy with the farm and live. Let me see, buried my 99 year old WW2 Ranger uncle, after a long hospital stay, watched middle daughter deliver her first, married off the oldest daughter, played football dad while son played as a starter all the way to the superbowl. Oh and he broke his arm playing, casted up and stayed playing (Doctor visits). Preppin' for wife's 50th birthday bash (Not a small thing) had breakdowns/repairs by the many, and about forty flat tires. In the mean time the Dodge got covered with dust and is now totalled!

I told her...

So where were we with this thing anyway? You were going to point me toward some fuel pressure something or checking the injection pump being off a tooth? Honestly, I can't remember any more.

Someone said they thought you fixed the truck and have been driving it.

But yes, 18 psi minimum to the injection pump.
Then remove number 1 and 6 valve covers, bar the engine over by the alternator. We need to get number one at top dead center. There is a timing pin located underneath the the injection pump. When both rockers on number 1 dont move and pushrods are free to spin, push the timing pin in under the pump, should push right in. When number 1  rockers are loose number 6 should have one loose and one tight.

OK, you're talking about timing the engine, right?
We did that already, last winter.
Or are you after something else?

As for fuel pressure, With the new lift pump, we were over 18, I want to say around 25 psi...Its somewhere in this thread.

I thought you were thinking the pump was installed one tooth off or something like that. I didn't really understand that part, since the pump fits to the drive via a tapered shaft like the chuck on a drill press.
Title: Re: SquareD Part 8, This thing ever going to get finished?
Post by: tlane3546 on November 19, 2017, 09:47:00 PM
Yes, but the engine has to be correct. The pump timing could be off still if the gear was a tooth off. But we cant verify that unless the engine is at TDC. Fuel pressure is good.

OK, I'll go get the darned engine at tdc (again) for ya.

I purchased that tool that fits in the bell housing used to spin the motor over. Would that be easier than turning the motor over via the alternator pulley?

Too late, pushed it outside and pressure washed it off. It's completely restored and GTG, except for one missing battery, another dead battery and it took three boys and me to push it downhill!
That's not good.
So maybe there is a curse on fixing this thing.
Troy who owns the wrecker said he had a flat on his rollback. So he tried to air it up and the tire blew up! As in a big time blowout. He ordered two new tires and as of 1600 they were still not here.
So I called another wrecker service who has not shown up, nor called back. OK, this is weird!
It's now 1645, and just now I went outside to move my truck and the batteries are also dead!
What???
Yea, shaping up to not be my day.
Oh well, I can see how tomorrow is looking. Get Troy to finally come over and get squareD loaded up and sent on its way. Then off to buy new batteries and get them thrown in. Then off chain saw hunting.
And...I have pics to prove it!

So, it got pressure washed off, but it had plenty of crud from the ages and a bit of overspray. Plan is to compound the thing once the major work is completed and settle with whatever it looks like then

Anyway Troy showed up with the old school chevy rollback and carted the ancient Dodge away to the shop where some talented young men, aka, diesel gurus will get the thing running

I don't know, but to me these two look serious. After chatting with them for awhile, they believe the engine is not times properly. So job one will be to get the thing running.
Next will be to address the brake issue. Finally I'll likely get them to wire in the transmission or get it dialed in so that I should at the end of this have something ready for the alignment shop

Great minds think alike!  Shawn's busy working on the Ken/Charles abuse network - I've picked up Don duty for the short term.  Speaking of Don - saw a remote control mini Chinook on sale at Amazon while picking up some Christmas toys for my youngest daughter and I to amuse ourselves with.

Negative again, my understanding it was a combination of cankles losing a year ago, lack of progress on sq d, low T on Charles part and Ken discovering he has emotions which in turn make him cry non stop. Occasionally he apparently stops the water works long enough to mumble incoherent phrases about his love for H......

You say that jokingly...

But given that these are old school (Read: Old) Armee tires that were likely sitting on a vehicle for a long time, then the several years I have had them, I'm sure they have outgrown their service life.

That's around 7 years for most tires made for the private sector.

These tires, however are marked "Military"

So I am hopefully wondering if perhaps, given the nature of how we tend to store things in the Military, if the formulation of that rubber has some ground up watch material that extends the rubber's life span?

Doze we have any knowledges about such things???

How about U, Turner. You're military intelligence...Any secret stuff goin' on in these tires???

I got nothing other than they ride like a steel turd! Being that they have basically sat for what seems to be a lifetime underneath of a non moving pile of steel, I'm wondering if they now have flat spots.

Time will tell, and ken's tires he posted up there that he has had laying around in the AZ sun since H began her campaign 27 years ago sure shows positive possibilities of decent tires.

On serious note, what's the date code on those tires? Now that I think about it, if you've had them since pre 99 they may not have a code, I feel like that is when tire manufacturers were mandated to start printing it on the tire.

"Yea, I bought that thar truck when Hillary was still yellin' at state troopers over in Arkansas"

That tire has weathered the arizona sun better than Hillary's face

"I married your mother back when Bill was in office and america thought Hillary was a beautiful woman...ah those were the days."

"four score and since hillary left office, ago...

"Halley's comet comes around once every time hillary grew to a baby until being sent to prison"

^^^ Actually I was just day dreamin' havin' some happy thoughts.

Well, not much exciting news to report just yet.

Mike confirms that the truck is in the shop and next, but no work is completed at this point. He had a shop full when I showed up, so its understandable.

He thinks that timing is the problem, like all of you have said, and his stated goal is to have the truck running by the end of the week. Time will tell if he meets his goal.

I am sure when he gets the correct fuel pressure and replaces the injection pump it will run fine. Although you may then have to0 large a turbo for a stockish pump=P

ON a diff note per our conversation the other day... I am considering building a 4 link front for my next Dodge. Because you made me give me an idea=)

Eh, lets stop with the negative vibes, man (My Kelly's heros interpretation).

And we were talking about a radius arm suspension mit der 7" 94-98 springs.

And just so everyone else is clued in here, Norm suggests as soon as I get it running, before the brakes or transmission dial in, I rip off the front leaf spring thing and build a radius arm coil spring setup for the truck...just to be clear...;=)

Tell you what, that boy's smart and sharper than a finely honed log!

I am pretty powerless to his subtle button pushin'. He knows all mine. Like how to get me all fired up to do something. He will ease in to the subject with the correct bait then as I start to get pulled in, he adds on just enough tinder to get me to set myself on fire. I don't like that about him...Or maybe it's that I don't like that about me, dunno.

But a bunch of years ago I spent just short of $3K from WFO on a radius arm kit to turn my Silvy into a Dana 60 wearing SAS converted truck. Since I lacked the courage to actually do it, that stuff has been a spider housing complex for nearly a half dozen years.

So, I was asking Norm which leaf spring I needed to source to stop the sag in SquareD's front end and he goes off on an hour long post graduate level thing about brake dive, death wobble, brake steer, good n' bad rides and basically what I got out of all that is you can't get here from there.
Then I start drivin' nails in my coffin, "Well heck, Norm, I have that radius arm kit just sitting here collecting rust and spiders, what about that. Next thing I know he wants me to use that super-duper Ford left drop HPD60 Ford axle, some 205 transfer case from a sherman tank or something like that, some adapter with 23 splines from the voyager 1 spacecraft program, and a host of other things which are about as commonly found as the Ark of the covenant.
After that we were talkin' about some Indian culture and I had to visit the john and some employee of his had just broken something expensive and it all ended. I checked that call's length...1:37. No not a minute and 37 seconds. More like a day + 37 hours

Thanks Norm (Bonehead) now I'm tryin my best to get spider-bit looking and sortin' through parts which have long ago fused themselves together in rust.

What I feel will happen.... the roll back will deliver Square D the beginning of this next week. Don will devote a day to setting the stage that will rival the moon landing photo op..Don will have tools placed in all the right areas.... then show us a video of Square D starting and exiting the garage under its own power. Rolling backwards to some properly placed wooden blocks to stop it from going too far (no brakes)

This video will then become a triumph of man over the trepidation of machine. Vegas will make book on the next phase, men across the world will begin oil changes in their own garages, and we will have a new Christmas story to tell our kids.

Norm, do you know some we don't yet?
No he doesn't

Just felt a tremor in the force!

OK, so it's running. No vid to prove it, but the motor runs, just not all that great at the moment.

Its timing, and its not dialed in by any means

What they think happened is that when Wayne and I timed the motor last winter, we probably had it right but then the pump probably slipped on the gear while the collet was loose. So, essentially, the timing went away, and no one knows where in the heck it is.

Mike said it sounds very advanced, and I have always thought it acted liked a carbed gasser with way too much timing, like you missed a tooth on the distributor after a cam change.

He says the motor sounds good, and that it will run and run well.

He is questioning the dual fuel line inlet and talked to me about removing the front hose and simplifying everything. He thinks it may actually be over fueling.

So next is to set the timing, then fix the brakes, get the transmission sorted and follow on tuning

Mike thinks he will have it all figured out and back to me before the first of the year

Why not? It seems to be a proven method of our educational system!

Gotcha!

Ken,

You, sir are one of the most level headed of the boneheads that inhabit this place. Why you chose to run with the likes of Shawn is mystifin'

Ken, even though you?re currently on cloud nine like a giddy 12 year old girl at her first school dance let me decode what Don just stated.

A) you?re still a bonehead albeit in his opinion moving up the ranks very slowly...

B) you?re still in his opinion a DOT who is capable of going off the rails at any minute, getting back together with the band & your gf H no less

C) obviously Don has a major trust issue with you

and the third is SquareD time?

Shouldn't that just be DT?

Truck didn't do anything. But I get it. Time, for people stopped when the build stopped...copy that. So we reference SD time from when? When the build started? Or from when it slowed to a near stop?

OK, on my way out to pick up the 2 X 10's for today's project (Buildin' archs) I stopped by the diesel shop.

Nothing to report as they were busy cooking on some other truck. Read: Hadn't gotten to it yet today. That was around noon.

Standby for a possible standby, I'll check back in in the morrow!

Norm,

Don't want to raise your anxiety levels any, but I called around 1600 today, and they said they had not gotten to it yet again.

So, now I am starting to enter that iffy area.

You see I consider myself equal amongst all customers. If I pay the exact same rate, then my money should be as good as everyone elses, agreed?

So when a new vehicle shows up and gets worked on and mine does not, well, I don't like that very much.

A long time ago, I owned this really cool Airplane, a 1960 Piper Comanche 250. I was all the rage at first, with an engine overhaul and a couple multi-thousand dollar modifications. But the work tapered off and then stopped. I stopped in one day and there were boxes stacked up on the wings.

That really pissed me off. I reported the shop to the FAA, imediately literally rolled the plane out of his hangar and put it into my T-Hangar. I then hired one of their mechanics and we finished my plane ourselves. The FAA pulled his license to operate and he went out of business.

I get that old feeling when my stuff starts to get pushed to the back burner.

So, I think I'll give him to tomorrow. If nothing is done, I'll pull it out of there and go find the next guy. I hope it doesn't go that way.

So from Big D?s place that?s about 3 hours give or take a half hour?

In the real man get it done no bs sense. Go grab C max & the GJ, I figure c max is hung up in a mulch bed again. So get that fancy tug n go strap Tate sold ya & have HH6 give c max a little nudge. Hook up that trailer, go grab the sputtering SQ D and throw it on that trailer then head northwest towards Tlane. I agree, we don?t need you wrenching on sq d again. I honestly can?t believe they haven?t worked on it? So much of the world has come to this.   Is this truck a bigger metaphor to the American work ethic?
Did it fall to the it?s hard so we aren?t going to try and fix it? Is it maybe to much ?old technology ? that the young guys don?t know where to start?
Do we as supporters need to start wearing save SquareD hats and start a protest of this shop? Picket signs and Ski masks and break stuff?

I thought it sounded like you were giving him until the first of the year here?  Seems to me they still have a couple weeks to make good on their word?

Settle down there you bunch of yankees!

So I talked with Mike today, good heart to heart. HE is reasonable and straight up.

He told me he thought he and I agreed he had until the first of the year to get it 1. Running, 2. Stopping, and 3. SHifting. He said he had a bunch of stuff that had already been scheduled that was still coming in. He said that he didn't think there would be much of a problem with getting the thing up and going, so let's just let him work his plan out and watch it the next two weeks.

Goal has been set to have a driveable SquareD by the oneth of Januberry

Now, settle down you bunch of no good, gud-4-nuthin's

LoL Nate.... well you can drive, which makes sense anyway from a economy standpoint. The Eco Beater is hell on fuel when heavily loaded. We'd spend more on fuel that it would cost to fix square D LoL  I need to save my $$$ for barbecue, air compressor motors, fixing that yellow chebbie, and maybe then someday I can actually build my truck. Besides Nate.... when going to the city, take a city truck right?

But here goes

First up, the engine is running fine. It was timing and it is now set properly.

Then Mike proceeded to tell me a few things.

First up, someone didn't tighten many of the brake lines, as the system had many leaks, which have been fixed.

Next up, someone hooked up the lines to the hydro boost backwards. That, too, has been remedied

There was an oil leak on the hydraulic pump in the engine cover gear case, which is now no longer leaking

And then, well, it seems that when they put it in gear, like nothing was working.

Mike said it was as if the transmission was not connected to the engine...almost as if someone forgot to actually bolt the flywheel to the torque converter.

Knowing that my truck had been vandalized by some no-gooder who apparently broke in my garage and for some unknown reason, removed the torque converter bolts from the thing, because I would not have forgotten to bolt the flywheel to the torque converter...Well, anyway, knowing that for certain, I have informed the proper authorities, and an investigation is has been started.

Therefore, due to the on-going nature of this investigation, I cannot comment further on the matter.

Finally, the dust is off. Timing is fixed and few bolts tightened down (or found)

So, when do the pictures show up? Remember, no pics, not real.

Glad it's running.
Brakes, ahhh, overrated. Didn't they leak all over the garage floor?

Hopefully you find those rascally torque converter bolts.

Happy to see this page FINALLY turning.

You know, after thinking about it, I?ll bet most of those ?missed items? were due to interruptions by the Red Dog eating your tools and the infamous ?levitation gone bad? incident where you tried busting the concrete with your backside.  That?s gotta be near the trans cooler line section of the build. Throw in the ?great candy bar wrapper fire? and there was plenty of opportunity for Gremlin attacks to go unnoticed.  You did paint it like a WW II bomber - roll the Bugs Bunny Gremlin episodes and the picture comes together like the missing minutes of the Watergate tapes!

I see you have my back on this one

Ya know thinking about it, those things are all a part of something like this. Square D was so much work, so over the top, so many modifications, and so totally unique, I fully expected to have a substantial and growing punchout list.

Missing the torque converter bolts...whoever did that...well, I have never done anything like that before!

So, in January, with a truck that runs and may even be driveable, I can go on to finishing a myriad of loose ends. Seems to be a theme in my life currently. I'll do it the way I am to things down at the farm. It is a full out effort to just close out open projects, you know, get things done.

I want to get the Dodge to a point where it works, and is needing nothing. Then I want to add on those long chevy rear springs and do something about that sagging front end. Likely we will see a pretty big change going on up front in the not too distant future.

Houston, we have a problem.

OK, the news is not good

First, the hydro boost which I had plumbed incorrectly blew its seals

They replaced it

The replaced unit just did the same thing. It had brakes, but now just massive hydraulic leaks.

And that is the good news

I guess I could also say it has not been stolen or burned down, or rusted away

But the torque converter/flywheel bolt missing thing is a lot worse than we imagined.

The torque converter will not engage the flywheel or crank hub. They think it is the RevMax billet converter nosecone that may be machined to an improper size (Too big-needing chucking and turning down to the proper size)

They need to pull the transmission at a minimum

Do any of you remember the two crossmembers I built and installed? How the fuel filter mount is also attached? How the exhaust is snaked through all that? How the trans lines run all over down there? How the wiring bundles run all over down there?
Keeping that in mind, we'd need to pull both drive shafts, the transfer case, linkages, and transmission just to be able to see what may be wrong...all at $120 an hour. I had budgeted $2K for the project, and we are at $1,920. Mike advises, that if I proceed, this will be a massive undertaking. We may then discover any number of bad things.

So, I think this goose may be cooked!

I told him to stop work while he and I consider what to do next.

I don't know if I have ever been kicked in the gut so hard as this, but reality just came home to roost.

I may just bring it home, pull it all apart and sell off all the individual parts, right down to the bare frame. When I get this sick about something, I get done with it, toss in the whillie-pete grenade and put it in the rear view mirror...

I don't quit, true

But not very smart

May have to take a huge step backward on it though. Not enough time to tear that thing down/repair/put back together myself these days. Was sort of the reason I hired someone.
Really disappointed in this.
Disappointed earlier that I hired a diesel mechanic to time the engine, who actually did it and did it all wrong, all at my expense. But he needed help at the time so what's done is done.
In all likelihood, probably looking at thousands more, and that dog won't hunt
I'll need to sit on this.

It will be sad to never see this project completed. But, there comes a time where the cost is simply too high. The money allocated may be better spent in other areas especially when a guy has a family to think about. I do not see it as giving up. I know that whatever you decide will be in the best interest of you and your family. Good luck with the decision.

Pray on it Don......REGARDLESS of the final decision/outcome: This project is what built this site- that little factor has paid tremendous dividends in multiple areas. Most importantly, the seeds sown and some already harvested in Christ?s name. You know some of those names Don (some we don?t and may never) and I know that they are worth more than ALL the money each one of us have expended on topics covered on the Real Man site!

Wow, these comments

Certainly "square" one up

You know, there have been times when i worried if this thing was moving to "Idol" status with me and some (all???) of you.

I certainly don't want it to be. I guess I really don't believe it, or I'd be the one to burn it down. Nothing and I mean nothing overshadows the Lord on this site. So this truck which flirted with being too important has been set, perhaps, in its proper place. It is in the end, simply only a truck.

Mike said it well when he referred to how it brought together and then cemented a group of men. For most reasons, that is a pretty good thing, and I'd like to think the camaraderie generated by this nearly incredible journey has indeed paid spiritual dividends for some of us here, maybe more than we know...?

So, yea, that weighs on me folks. I mean on one hand the relationships this build has generated will in some cases last, in some cases have been mutually helpful, and in some cases served as a learning tool (citing Halsey's comments). I feel responsible to finish it and use it, so the darned thing doesn't turn into a failure, which it is not. But, I'm thinking (Knowing?) it's gonna be thousands to push it over the top to being a driver...and with all these unanswered questions about exactly what is required to do that, well it aint easy.

Still too much to process at the moment, but after seeing the really wonderful comments by all of you who responded, I won't tear it apart, I guess you all deserve better than that. So, let me say a prayer or two about this and sit on it a bit and see what shakes out...OK?

My 2 cents (and that?s a high valuation btw).....

Have Nate & Norm come pick it up. If they are still willing that is? Norm has a big shop, he needs more projects (insert eye roll). If nothing else he has a good place to store it for a bit. It gives us all something to harass him about rather than you. Think delegating the work load here, that?s what guys in charge do right? Once he gets that new shop squared away and a couple other things that are consuming his time maybe this is something he tackles? I?d call Norm & chew some fat, he?s always good for that & he?ll give you an honest opinion whether you like it or not. You probably won?t but what can it hurt. One last thing, Nate needs more miles on that bling new truck anyhow.....

This was my instant thought, but Shawn beat me to the punch. If not them, I?m sure someone with enough knowledge to knock it out is here.

I don?t think this truck has ever been an idol for anybody, maybe a little bit of jealousy, but that is absolutely overcome by the bonds that have been created, the seeds that have been planted, and those who have come to know THE Savior due to the creation of this sight.....which started with  square D.

Pull trans, 2 hrs, even with your custom work. Pull the pilot bearing out of the crankshaft (maybe I'm joking??), And slap it back together... total time 6ish hours...

OK, now you boneheads know darned well, I wouldn't ask anyone to do my work, end of discussion

But, after sitting on it a bit, here's what I should do.

I'll go get it and bring it home. I'll pull it down myself. I roughly calculated with what I'd spend on labor alone, I could purchase a Transmission jack, build a new 12 X 12 shed down farmside and mill this mysterious nosecone to fit the crank or flywheel.

So done deal, Square D comes home and I'll fix it myself.

Motor is running at least, and I know I have a hydro-boost problem and a torque converter that isn't attached, nor fitting.

So soon as the new year gets cranked back up, I'll go get it.

One big caveat: I haven't talked to Mike yet at the diesel shop. SHould he offer me something reasonable to do the trans/converter work, I may still let him do it, however, I think that has a low, low possibility.

Sorry to read about your troubles.  I was just telling a co worker about your build and the extent you went to build it, so I figured Id come here to check on things.   I hope things get figured out.  I know the decision can be painful to continue to drop money on something you've already spent so much on, but it doesn't seem like something that cannot be overcome.

Yea, its no fun.
I spent $1,900 just to find out what was wrong and get the timing set.
I trusted a diesel mech to time it, actually two. Both failed to get it right which is disappointing. Then there's this thing with the converter not fitting the flywheel, and the brake system which blows out seals. I'm thinking that may simply be a crossed up hydraulic line somewhere, dunno, but labor has crossed the threshold of ridiculous IMHO.
So I'll throw some more work at this and if I can't pull it together, I'm sacking the project and putting a thousand parts up for sale. I'll keep it reasonable, shoot for 25K and settle for 20K and NEVER go back and do this again.

Life is too short, labor these days is both too expensive and of poor quality in most places. I no longer have time to spend on such a trivial project, so it is what it is, and at the moment that ain't much!

Don... the brake thing is likely simple, as you well know.

Didn't some of those HD/Custom converters require a spacer for clearance to bolt up to the flywheel? Pretty sure Patch has one between the block plate and the trans to allow the ATS converter to bolt up.  Might be worth a call to your converter manufacture.

Offers still open man...

They just contacted me with the bill for now.

Too many other moving parts including the thing we spoke of to have any time for that old Dodge right now.
