You can get a NAS case with raid software and use both the drives to make an external storage.

Charles is right, I know of what he speaks, but don't know the finer details.

Nate, How big or what is the capacity of your current SATA drives? Are you wanting to connect to Windows or MAC PC? Most of these enclosures have issues with MAC OS X. TRN's option looks pretty good for what it is worth but read the negative reviews.

Also not sure how technical you are but troubleshooting can be a pain and you don't want to spend hours on with D Link tech support.

Do you just want external storage connected to one PC or do you want it available to multiple devices over your home network / wifi? If you just want external storage attached to one PC it might be better to just put the $100.00 towards a USB external drive. The one might have more capacity our of the gate than the two SATA drives you currently have. Also if you buy a SSD drive it is much faster than SATA.

Here is two 128GB Thumbdrives for $79.00. That is 256GB of fast storage that works with any PC.

This one is a Solid State.... Fast 500GB that just works for $200.00.

Sorry... more questions than help.

If it's just external storage, out of a box is likely cheaper per TB.
I picked a couple 4TB external drives for cheaper than I could just buy the drive for...

I have done that to old drives before. Now that externals are so cheap it is easier to just buy the whole thing.

I also us carbonite which has saved me, but recovery is slow.

so I really liked Charles idea, but not really what I was looking for at this time.

basically I was wanting to take several of these:

and make one of these:

and not one of these:

Nate and I'm sorry I answered the question instead of the question behind the question. But then I find myself doing things the hard and expensive ways just to prove I can do it....
