I have the need to haul quantities of water to various spots for drinking, washing, and construction uses. Be it from water for concrete to washing some equipment, I need to have the water mobile.
I also have the need to take fuel to my heavy equipment. Those pieces of equipment can suck up 60 gallons at a time. Driving a 55,000 lb excavator a half mile to a fuel station is just not practical.
The fuel tanks with pump can run well over a thousand dollars, and although nice, are far above what I require. So in this HMMV trailer I have I plan to siamese two 55 gal metal drums and plumb them up for a pump run by an organic 12 volt battery. The water will likewise be pressurized through a organic pump and routed to some standard faucets for convenience
We going to start with the old Armee trailer which has been serving me well for a few years now.

Its ugly, I know. But that thing would hide very well under a cedar tree and it has managed to stay in my possession all this time!
First order of business is removal of the existing 325 gal tank and everything else that has accumulated in there

I had some water exposed to sunlight for a month or so and the algae growth that took place is startling!

After disassembly, I fired up that old tried and true pressure washer and got after it

Then came the water tank. It cleaned up like new!

The next day it is all dried up.
Please note that this is military CART paint. If you breath the dust from that stuff you can develop a nasty cancer. CART paint is much more than just paint. The highly modified formula is actually designed to absorb and hold nerve toxin and some other weaponized chemicals, hopefully preventing those nasties from spreading onto a soldiers skin and subsequently killing him. A pin sized droplet of VX is all it takes to kill you in 45 seconds after contact. Almost as bad as having to listen to or look at Antifa protesters dressed up as female genitalia (As they seem to like doing)
So, I am not going to sand that stuff at all. Nope, just spray paint over it and hope for the best.
I did, however mask the lighted and cool data plates off

GCI paint is oil based enamel and is mixed to the exact mil-spec colors of the era represented by that color.
I used the Army Jeep Paint, WW2 color for Square D, a truck I used to have, which is now covered by dust and ruined again!

But this time I monkeyed with the color a bit to make it mine. Reason is, this particular gallon is the color the Armee used after ww2 and into the Korean war. It shifted toward a green with a muddy brown hue, not my fav...
So I opened up the safe. You see, I have been investing in some John Deere green paint, hoping it will be as valuable as they seem to think those tractors are. I pulled a quart and poured it into the Armee slurry to come up with "John Armee Green" a new color previously known to nobody (And that's a good thing!)

Matching the color, will, of course be impossible, but ask me if I care?
Then I thinned the goop and added some hardener to keep the inevitable dog claw marks as minimally destructive as possible

That "Majic" paint is cheap old tractor and implement paint from TSC and very affordable.
For the next 3.5 hours I sprayed and sprayed till I's could spray no more!
And all that turned the trailer John Armee green and placed a smile on my tired face

Fifteen minutes later the paint all fell off!

Being that this is dumb old oil based enamel, albeit with hardener, I am going to give it 48 hours to cure before continuing with this build out.
At S+24 (Spraying time) the finish is hard and completely dry to the touch. Allowing it all day in the sun and another 24 hours should do the trick. I could be back on it by tomorrow

You own a farm? Maybe just park it on the line and call it a day. You will find a use as time goes by. Looks like you could haul your tuck legal, but what would you use to move it then.

I played around spraying lines on it a couple years, or maybe a year ago, can't recall.
Nothing wrong with it with the water tank on it. Same water tank going right back on in fact, along with a fuel container.

Plenty of room for that. I thought about adding tanks under mine but that is another project not needed now.
Mount a battery in front where the can went and keep it up with a solar.

Plan changed somewhat, as you will see in a little bit
I painted the tank with a whole bunch of two part epoxy paint sealer. Idea being it's hard, and should keep the interior dark to prevent algae from growing

I painted over the trailer support legs as well to get a top coat over the carc paint
I'll make them OD or flat black or something

Here's where I diverged from the original plan where I was going to siamese a couple 55 gal steel drums to hold the fuel.
This tank was on special at tractor supply company, so I splurged and got a ready made 100 gal fuel tank purpose made for this application

Reduced from $369 down to $310, good enough!

And I picked up another 12VDC electric fuel pump

The vented fill cap went in first

Then I ran into my first problem
The extendable fuel pick up tube was too long for this tank
-
It is not just a simple matter of cutting off the end
You have to trim off both ends of the extendable part, but that sacrifices the o-ring seal
So I cut both ends and stretched some O-Rings over the inner pipe and shoved the business back together.

Then the pump was twisted into place and everything seemed to fit OK

Then I attached a fuel filter to the pump using a 3/4" NPT nipple

This pump came with ten feet of 3/4" hose. I felt that was a bit too short, so I added another fourteen foot section to it. That should allow me to approach to a safe and stable position if, say, the excavator is semi submerged in some pond and be able to safely fuel it without sinking or tipping my trailer

Next the hand nozzle went on and that was all she wrote for available time...Off to football practice.
I didn't realize it, but this middle school team the little pre-ranger plays is amongst the best in the state. They went undefeated last season and only gave up four touchdowns all season long. Our first game last week, our guys destroyed the other team, 44-6. I was really hopping the guests would at least score one TD on their opening game, but that's all they got. Our guys didn't allow the point after either!

Have you thought about a cover for that trailer? Keep all that stuff out of direct weather. Looking at mine I was thinking about running a piece of metal along the rail, then add small posts to that. Bend some conduit into "U" shapes and your are done. Works great on my little trailer, but I mounted the posts right to it with bolts.

I use the same pump setup on my tank. I would recommend the swivel for the fuel line to save wear and tear on the hose at the filter end. I learned that lesson and added a swivel while replacing the line.

I was just going to tie down a tarp across the stuff, but this looks a whole lot better.

I even considered having a machine shop turn some custom billet gears to replace until I saw how much they wanted :sad:.... I don't know how else you would keep this from happening...

I'm running a combination of lacquer thinner, sulfuric acid, paint remover in one tank...Sure hope the stuff doesn't melt those gears ;-)

When I "rebuilt" my toyhauler recently, I replaced the gears in the fuel pump, cleaned the tank, and use it at least every 2 months to keep the varnish out of the gears....last week I went to use it, and it was locked up again. urrr

Rain tomorrow from the Hurricane, so I'll run out and score a pile of conduit, then spend the day fabbing up a cage.
Cover that with something like my wife's old quilt that I can't stand and off we go to the races!

I used 4 posts on my little trailer (old chevy love) that has a flat rail I simply drilled into and used long bolts through pipe.
I think 4 would be fine on the 1101 but I would use 1 in.

Well, when I was thinking it over I thought I'd weld longitudinal bars in to connect all of the hoops. Four sound reasonable, although I was thinking of making six. The trailer already has holes in the top rail through which I could run bolts. My idea is to bend the hoops, weld a nut up inside of the tube, then bolt through from the bottom. Simple enough and easily done
I'll fuss with it some tomorrow. I got both tanks mounted today along with a faucet mounted through the back wall. I'll post up pics tomorrow.
Had to rush off for another football game. Pre-Ranger's team smoked up another school tonight. 24-6 this time. that makes 2-0 and have scored 68 points and allowed only 12 points against them. Mine plays center and all over the defense this year.

Looking at all the mounts on the 1101, I thought a piece of 1/8 bar with posts welded on. Tarping it squeezes the out hoops so a simple brace could be in order on top.

With being it comes in 10ft lengths it will only be about 16in high with the bends.
May want to join them in the center so you get more height out of it plus they are a little cheaper in a 10 pack.

First fitting of the water tank with the fuel tank...It was looking pretty tight

I upsized the hose all the way to 3/4" with a corresponding fitting. It is a straight rascal, and that is going to prove to be a problem

With the H2O tank temporarily removed, I scooted the fuel tank around until I found a good spot, forward and offset to the left. That position allows easier servicing and room for the hose

I was able to hit all four bolts in the back, but none in the front side. THings are tight, and there is a whole lot of steel frame in the front. I estimate I might have needed an eight inch long bolt to get through everything!

For the front, I ran two cargo straps through the loops affixed to the tank, and anchored them to the trailer's built in lifting eye, "D" rings

I painted the trailer aft legs OD green, then secured them, pinning in the cargo strap tie-downs.

I'll find a 90 fitting to gain an inch or three, but even with, the gate will not close, so I will just live with it. Tank strappage is just starting to happen at this point

I considered blocking that off and installing a bulkhead fitting somewhere else. Jury is still out on that one. Not completely done, and not super comfortable with boring a hole in the side of that tank...

It looks like there may be room foreword of the tank, or was that pre strapping?
Just rotate the tank a few degrees, and move the bung out of the way.
Unless it will still be in the way of other stuff.

A little left from s good idea but what about warming up the plastic tank and molding it a little tighter into the fuel tank. Risky for sure but doable with a good heat gun and some thick gloves

I mean he owns heavy equipment, hook that trailer to a tree & use the bucket on the excavator to massage the tail gate a little...... :popcorn:

Come on guys, lets be a little more serious here. He could easily cut one side of that tank off, with a chainsaw, and it would clear the tailgate. Bending the tailgate seems a little extreme. :)

You can't rotate it because it has molded sides for wheel wells, check the photos in post 75

There is room for rotation, evidently not enough as it's already pointed toward 5:30. Don, what if you mounted the large screw in bung from the inside and mounted the hose end 180 degrees opposite from how its is now? Hose would be recessed inside tank allowing just the hose to protrude almost even with the exterior of the tank. Obviously this would require inserting a pre-ranger by their ankles to screw it in the interior and also depend upon the threads extending all the way to the inside as well. Just thinking outside the box/inside the tank!

The tank is already rotated as much as it will go...And I was just at HD and forgot the dang blast 90 fitting!!!!!!!!

I picked up 14 pieces of conduit.
Check this out. At the local lumber yard, they were asking $15.60 for one stick of 3/4"
I ended up going with 3/4" because I am going to build a lot more than just four hoops. Anyway, I paid $3.84 a stick at HD!
I picked up some 1.5" and some 3/4" gray PVC also to bury for a new circuit running from the shed addition to the camper and shelter additions. I'll have the load to carry more heater for this coming cold spell.

So today I fetched all the parts for the hoop system. I decided to make it simple and quick, albeit gud-enough. That's a state of being where the darned thing can't be seen anyway, so let's just get this thing done already!

Had to pause there for some spaghetti with the grand kids. The smallest one is wearing about half of it, and the rest was happily consumed. The middle of the pack girl when asked, "Who's your favorite, Poppy or the dog?", answered, "Poppy!" So I'm ridin an emotional high right now, having nudged out scout for the fav for the evening.
FYI, all you Armee trailer, HMMV style, owners out there. All those mystery holes contain a 3/8" SAE coarse thread nut-sert

So I fabbed up four pieces of angle which I salvaged from the Sawmill crate into the hoop bases which each catch two of the bolt holes

The four corners present differently, so they each got their own mount as well. I had a bunch of frame bolts left over from the SquareD incomplete build, so I put them to work

Using the supplied holes, the math worked out to having four hoops front to back

I created the legs for the hoops from electrical conduit, following the suggestion from one of you boneheads. The leg length is 23"

This is not an NHRA roll cage, and it doesn't need to be complicated. All it really needs is to stand up to the weight of a pre-ranger who undoubtedly will nap up there hiding from me so he can escape some work. I do believe in slavery and I think it all starts at home!
So we will keep it stupid simple and just use electrical conduit sleeves and elbows and just screw the things together.

I was going to leave it that way for the evening, but one of the curtain climbers was eyeing the setup. He was seeing a playground jungle gym thing, so I decided to start reinforcing the thing.
First up is two longitudinal braces just down from the elbow. I'll create a strong box below, then work off that to brace up the roof areas
And that was all I felt like sweating over today...Off to shower land and spaghetti...Yippee!

Well she has had close encounters with carnage like motorcycle wheelies and who know what else most likely developed a healthy dose of self survival when in the Big D operating area. Even with the potential of losing some fashion flair.

Using those 90s was a good idea, I just used a bender. Those connectors will need a cover of some sort or the tarp will wear right through.
The brace is just burned on right? Watch those fumes when welding plated metals, deadly stuff. I need to add those, wish there was a bolt on piece.

Here is an actual, not staged, shot of her holding things together prior to tacking. Saw this and had a flashback...I thought I was downtown Kandahar looking at a woman or a sack of rice...Appearances are similar.
She fears the sparks!
Well she has had close encounters with carnage like motorcycle wheelies and who know what else most likely developed a healthy dose of self survival when in the Big D operating area. Even with the potential of losing some fashion flair.

Using those 90s was a good idea, I just used a bender. Those connectors will need a cover of some sort or the tarp will wear right through.
The brace is just burned on right? Watch those fumes when welding plated metals, deadly stuff. I need to add those, wish there was a bolt on piece.
I was thinking of getting some foam pipe insulation and covering those areas
Yes, just heavily tacked at the moment, but burned in is all I'll do.

Next up is the battery box. I drilled six 1/4" holes through the box, and into the wheel well.I then installed nutserts in keeping with the way the trailer was constructed

Then, using fender washers and some spacers so the lid could fit, bolted the plastic box into place

That heavy Exide deep cycle battery came next

The power cable for the fuel pump was attached, and the excess cable tied off and stowed. The cable itself is secured to pillow blocks glued into place

I tested the circuit, and the pump is motoring like gangbusters.
Then back to bracing the canvas frame.
These small braces will triangulate the sides against longitudinal movement.

The battery will be topped up every day compliments to the coleman 6 watt trickle charger

I really took my time carefully placing the panel onto the fuel tank
The masking tape should hold it until it migrates onto the roof once the canvas shows up

Back to the tailgate, I am still forgetting to get that 90 degree fitting

I still plan to weld in two more longitudinal stiffeners and fix a sheet of plywood to the roof prior to covering with canvas.

Anyway, it is now ready to carry water and fuel, so I have planned a shakedown run tomorrow to transport fuel and water to the farm.
When I bring it back, Sunday, I will add the missing parts and cover with canvas.

:likebutton: that looks great. I was going to ask about running pipes between the "hoops " to add more rigidity. I think I saw that somewhere on military trailers with similar canvas tops. But sounds like you beat me to it! I think this will work great!

I actually added 84 gallons of the good stuff before my wallet screamed for me to stop!

It rode along great! Far better than I would have expected. I maintained normal speed and off road, well that trailer with the big 37" (Actually closer to 35") mil tires handled the rough terrain very well

I used it to top off the fuel tanks of Sarge and Chief, then pumped the balance into the resident fuel tank.

Ken I was thinking the same thing but wasn't going to say it. Glad you did. Perhaps a drop hitch turned upside down to at least make the trailer sit level.

Don, I bought some off amazon. They will shrink, but that's the nature of oiled canvas..this is the largest one I bought (2 years ago and it has shrunk about 10" length wise)

I finished up the canvas bow structure today along with about everything else except for the canvas cover. But, time to put the trailer into service. I'll top up the fuel and water and transport it farmside, then temporarily cover it all with a tarp. We will revisit the proper canvas top at some point in the future.
I added a hook to stow the rubber garden hose inside the trailer

Then tacked in the rest of the structure. Even just tack welded the thing was pretty strong and rigid

Then I pulled it off being careful to drag it all across every new painted surface within 50 feet, just to give the thing a "beaten" appearance ;-0
I welded the whole thing, then ground the welds and protrusions, then cleaned it with a wire wheel and degreaser

I coated the feet with a rubberized product, and even though it is galvanized, sprayed it with acid etch primer and a good quality gray enamel

Then again being careful to scratch everything I previously missed, I raked the sharp edges all over the fresh green paint to make it look like it just spent the day driving through a B-52 Arch-Light strike...It does!
Oh somewhere during that process, it became remounted amid all the damaged and scratched paint.

The a piece of 7/16 OSB found its way onto the top and was secured with a whole buncha' zip ties

I purchased the elbow fitting that is going to buy me another 2" of room, allowing me to nearly (possibly??) close the gate. I'll install that after draining 320 gallons of water!

It has been awhile but I seen to remember hinges for these tailgates that extended due to long loads such as generators or commo rigs. Maybe you can fab up a couple hinges and top fasteners allowing the same thing.

Probably won't need to Matt,
I haven't even installed the ninety which will give me a couple inches room, and then if the gate closes most of the way, then why bother fixing something that really doesn't need fixing?
Plan A: install the ninety when the tank is empty (Down to 200 gallons presently) then latch up the day and give it no more thought!
Plan B: Go with Plan A
