Got the invite from my pops and stepmother to come down and play golf at the country club in Everett. 95 deg around 2:00pm when we made the turn at hole 9. My calfs and forearms were sweating. shot a respectable 102 considering I've not golfed for about 3 years and my brother in law who plays 2x per week w/ over $2k in clubs invested shot a 105 ??? outdrove everyone on a couple holes, but those were usually the ones I would triple bogey after reaching the green in two. I guess I need some short game work.

They day before, we had my 3 sisters and all my nieces over for some backyard antics, a little playing out in the bay and some fire pit time. I made Chinese for dinner. bought the eggrolls and bbq pork, but made hot & sour soup, orange chicken, chow mein and fried rice from scratch. no pic of the fried rice as it got demolished by hungry children prior to Cyndie's photo op.

From an ex tire jockey(me); sales gimmick. maintains constant pressure regardless of temperature, but that's the only plus side. For about 100 years we've somehow managed to maintain proper inflation on tires with the idea that they change as they heat and cool. pretty sure someone just said, "ya know I bet I could sell this".

Sam was nominated for the Presidential Award for Academic Achievement by one of his teachers, and he was awarded the certificate on Wed. He'll be graduating on the 15th at the Comcast Arena in Everett and we couldn't be more proud of him. He had some rough patches, and overcame his severe ADHD, weaned off of Adderall completely and is managing on his own. So far he's planning on a couple years at the community college level/technical school, (cheaper ;D) and then applying to universities in CA. Little miss Sophie graduated pre-k, (didn't know that was a thing) and will be starting up kindergarten next fall. one down, one to go.

Well its been awhile so I started a new build,  in a slightly different direction but the same idea.

Sig 229 build, I just have to cut the frame rails and then assemble.

Are you going to be able to stop playing with rockets long enough to get this together? That's my favorite pistol btw. You got my gun and my childhood dream job. Anything else you want there?  :D

I've searched the internet and found lots of great info. Except I still cant narrow down which are the best to get? The springs I put in last year were rated at 1950lbs and the Cummins ate them up with a 2 inch re-arch on new springs. The spring sites give me more choices of, 2150, 2200, and 2775lbs rating for a 73-87 3/4 ton Chevy. But then the 73-87 Blazer has the 2350lbs rating. And the 1/2 ton Chevys give you the same ratings as the 3/4ton. I'm looking for the flex, smoother ride, durability against the weight of the Cummins. Plus the 200lbs bumper on the front. So if anyone has experience with these please let me know.
I added the 87 chev 1 ton spring which I thought was rated at 2600 ea. I pulled out two leaves and installed them. My Cummins flattened them in about 6 months. I am going to reinstall the two leaves and hope the springs aren't ruined. That is one heavy motor!

The motor is heavy for sure, but I'm betting that 1000lb bumper isn't helping :P

This is starting to sound like a Tate Family vacation! Glad no one was hurt!

2211
My truck is a 6.7 Cummins.  When said LS I was meaning Limited Slip not a GM LS Small Block.  My truck is equipped with the 11.5 AAM in the rear.

Improper usage of acronyms.  I'll take my beating now.
BOOM POW WHAMMO!
I think that will do;-) With the added information I will revise my previous statement and agree with Don and others. Grizzly is the only option for you here.

« on: June 01, 2016, 10:16:03 AM »
I've never applied it in the cold, so I can't give any proper feedback, but since it's basically liquid wax polymers, I would imagine it would be tough going below 40deg.

2213
It's a real 6 in one hand 1/2 dozen in the other situation; the Duragrip is a classic passive limited slip and there will be more movement between the tires than a full locker like the Grizzly. But for the average commuter the locker can be more aggressive than needed/wanted. Don't get me wrong, I love the thing for all out traction and brute strength, but the Duragrip will more than get the job done for 70% of the crowd out there so I say it's up to personal preference. For me and my usage, (daily driver, towing camper, minimal off road use, pretty much stock), I would take the limited slip option. If I were tuned up at all, and had bigger than stock tires and went camping in more rugged terrain, I would do the locker.

2214
Thanks Tate!

The truck is low miles, under 25k.  Is there any reason to consider replacing the bearings or is a basic install kit all that is needed?  I want to do it right, but there's no need to waste money either.  I also see a huge price difference between the Yukon and Chrysler PN.  Is it just normal OEM price gouging or is there a difference in the parts?

Sounds like the duragrip will be the right fit for me.  Any other recommendations?

A little bit of both. The Yukon's are a higher quality aftermarket than others, but also OEM spec. and the OE is just stupid money for no real reason. I would recommend at least pinion bearing kits, and make sure to contact me directly on that stuff. I have discounts on forum builds.

2215
Considering the usefulness of this to all concerned, I've decided to respond to your PM publicly here. I think it will be a good reference point later on. https://www.ringpinion.com/calculators/Calc_RPM.aspx is obviously my calculator, but the one Don posted is essentially the same. using your 6 speed trans ratios, and est 75MPH, 4.11 will put you right around 2190 w/ 35" tires. From what Koot and others have mentioned, this seems to be the ideal wonder-ratio for cummins. I would recommend the duragrip if the truck spends most of it's life on the street, but that being said, there's nothing stronger and more reliable than the Grizzly locker for ultimate strength and traction if you're more off road than on, or are just preferring that locker feel and sound.

Ephesians 6, 11-17

Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.
14 Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness;
15 And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace;
16 Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked.
17 And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God:

One of my favorites Don. I like it very much and really fits with our theme.

Went through the same thing on the wife's Yukon, but they just flat went out after time. There's known issues w/ GM guage lights and the dealer's ONLY solution is to replace the cluster, SMH. This was helpful, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fC_dE0iZtxE and now that it's happening again, I'll be tearing it down once again to do it myself. (the first one was under warranty and they did just replace the cluster).

Not really picture worthy, but I finally got around to tapping into the XM wiring to splice in a headphone jack in my glovebox. Now I can use my phone or iPod for music. Pretty simple mod; few bucks in parts and you're all set. Sounds great too.

Note to anybody considering this... Splice in both the grounds, or for some reason you will lose bass if you only use one ground off the XM module harness. If you splice into both grounds, sounds amazing.

Here's the how to I followed:

Pressure washed. A lot. no side pics, but two story w/ vaulted ceilings = very high on an extension ladder and white knuckles. driveway took almost as long as the house with 12 years of fine dust/silt/moss etc embedded into the washed rock surface. hardi-plank looks almost new now. just need to paint trim around the garage and door on the front porch. Speaking of which; pressure washing the little 1x1 spindles took almost as much time as the rest of the entire porch. now on to staining.

pffft! Several positives that outweigh that negative; you're closer to me, so I can eat your barbeque, you're in a rural area of WA so emissions crap gets to come off, (bye bye egr), the farther you get from the base, the less chance you'll have a unscrupulous landlord trying to rip you off, but not much farther. Look south towards Westport, maybe get near the water, did I mention I can eat your barbeque? See, lots of positive aspects!

Good to have you local sir, and thank you.

Just added a couple new videos on positraction install, and locker operation FAQ(s).

2239
Sorry it took so long for me to find this. The Eaton Governor lock differential requires 100 rpm difference in wheel speed to even come to play. The counter weighted governor assembly disengages the unit over 30MPH. The clutches do not provide traction but serve to turn the cam and fly wheel which engage the governor. When it IS engaged, it is truly locked up and is not technically a limited slip. That being said, several conditions could have been present, too much wheel speed out of the gate to engage the locking mechanism is the first thing that comes to mind, and in that case it acted exactly as it should; the unloaded inside tire boiling with the outside tire that was loaded up from the turn receiving no power. It also could have a dead spot in the flywheel where several of the tiny little teeth are missing, as this is a common failure point. The good news is that it is working under other conditions, so you probably don't have a dead stick, but they are very susceptible to failure especially with larger tires solely based on their design as they bang into engagement constantly and fatigue themselves.

You could do the Grizzly if you wanted to upgrade the locker, but for a little better street manners, we now have a Duragrip for that application and it's a monster. forged case and internals in 4310 chromoly, raybestos clutches and a 4 pinion design, it's a classic, passive limited slip similar to the older Eaton design but with much better materials. If you decide to open it up, look for missing teeth on the fly wheel, damaged springs on the governor, and hairline cracks at the valleys of the pinion gear teeth. Rebuilding these units is not cost effective and you might as well talk to WILSONPHIL because you practically need a degree in rocket science to do them correctly.

To replace the unit is VERY simple; remove axle shafts, pull cover and drain. Using a dial indicator with either a magnetic base or adjustable snake type arm, determine backlash. Mark bearing caps left and right, and remove the 4 bolts that hold them in place, and remove the posi/ring gear assembly. (this might require a BFG, pry bar and a fat guy to achieve, but keep pulling, it will come out). Either transfer the old bearings to the new posi, or press on new bearings, and transfer the ring gear to the new Posi. Re-install new posi/ring gear combo and bearing caps, and check that backlash is the same. Refill with gear oil and additive and replace cover and axles. Drive.

I just worked 3, 16hr shifts at the Jeep Beach show in Daytona Fl, so to everyone who asks, "how was your vacation?", it was 15 min long, at the end of the day when I put my feet in the Atlantic and received the call that I needed to move my butt down to the event parking as everything was being moved inside, the models were lost and the parking was filling up 2hrs prior to start.

And also, not what I did, but what I'll be doing when the parts show up. note the fridge door hangs about 1/2" lower than the freezer. the cam/hinge plastic garbage did what it's supposed to do and failed. Home depot, lowe's, country store, no one has this or has carried them for years, and I was told by the lowe's staff, that most customers just buy a new fridge! found them on Amazon for $9.50.

Thanks to all for the compliments.  Here are a few more from the same trip.

This one from Gooseberry Mesa near Zion UT.  Made for a pretty sweet solitary camping spot.

...and this spot..took about 2 1/2 hours and 60 miles of gravel road to get to.  Toroweap on the north rim of the Grand Canyon.  Truck is in the center of the pic and 3000 + feet of air is behind me:

That is some beautiful scenery, including the truck. Bryce Canyon, Zion, and Lake Powell will always be favorites of mine. And as much as I like the reliance of older vehicle design, the creature comforts to experience now from the newer vehicles are unparalleled to years past.
