Firearms / G17 gen 5
« on: January 26, 2018, 10:11:48 PM »
I am roughly 1500 rds down range on my new gen 5 g17. I really like this gun. I’ll tell you the added features like the enhanced trigger and the flared mag well really make the weapon, over previous generations. I don’t consider myself a firearms aficionado or anything, but I like them to run.

If you will believe this, my biggest concern is that it hasn’t malfunctioned yet. I generally like them to malfunction a few times in the first 2-300 rounds and then clear up to none or one every 500 rounds or so... 1500 round count today... no malfunctions... is it broke in?? Are they about to start??

Firearms / Re: Surefire xc1
« on: January 26, 2018, 10:03:13 PM »
Figured I’d give this a bump as me and Bobby were talking about it the other day. Been carrying the xc1 every day for almost two years now. I’m ashamed to say I just realized I haven’t changed the single triple A battery she runs on as a matter of preventative. (Honestly I didn’t realize it’s been this long!) secondary to that I don’t often use its light for much other than clearing my house when I know I’m the only one around coming home to a dark house! Good training!

Here’s a couple pics of light output in an ambient light zero environment...

An excellent way to gather full scene information with a WML, given that most ceilings are white, is to cast the light from the ceiling. This is also my  recommended methodology when seeking out the bumps in the night of your occupied home.

Here is the light focused on the wall-

As you can see the light beam is clear and free of hot and cold spots. For a bulb roughly a cm in diameter the technology in the beam is tremendous.

I’m pretty certain surefire will develop the first light saber available on the civilian market.

Reach demo-

Bobby was looking for a review, but I just don’t have much negative to report on this light. If I could complain for someone else, I would say it needs a better system for constant on... but as it’s designed for a CCW weapon, I can’t think of a situation where I would be doing dynamic low light room clearing with it...

It’s re-usable. Just cut it in to chunks and cook it at 270 until the bubbles all disappear.

There are also recipes on the internet for making it with Knox gelatin

No sir! The good lord made them winter hardy! I have lamps set over their roosts with a thermaswitch set.

Second to that, feeding them corn before they roost will raise their body temps and keep them comfy at night...

The chicken compound!

The freezeproof waterer I created. Wrapped a 12’ piece of pipe heat tape around the bucket, insulated with fiberglass pipe insulation and protected with duct tape. Was -3 here and in single digits for over 40 hours. Bucket stayed thawed!

My wife has about a dozen chickens.  We haven't seen an egg since temps dropped back in November.  Not sure what's up with that.  The eggs are so much better then store bought though.

We also have a rooster, named him Bruce.  He was supposed to be a girl.
Same traffic with napoleon! He was supposed to be a she!

For this years science fair we are testing bullet penetration and cavitation. As you can see I have already made a significant investment in to this.

If any of you gents would like to mail me a couple rounds you would like tested, send me a PM. Gelatin will be melted down and reformed between each round. Only doing 9mm. I will need the specs on whatever rounds you send obviously.

13 chickens 7 1/2 months old!

Here’s some pics of the bedroom. We also have one rooster we call Napoleon because a)he’s an a-hole and b) he’s a little guy. There’s six mentally handicapped guineas in the flock too.
Idk what kind they are. They are the ones you get roped in to buying at the feed store! So far with the coop construction and feed we have in them, I’d say those 19 eggs cost us around $1000.00! We should see a return on our investment around the apocalypse or 2025, whichever comes first!

Installed a Cold Air Inductions Inc. CAI on Diana today! There are several YouTube videos detailing the install of this exact kit. I was  pretty impressed with everything I saw (especially the before and after dyno vid) and I know that CAI’s are a hot topic of debate but this one seems to do it right and well it’s my money, so I popped on it.

Took a little while to get it, I guess they had run out of material but I got it today and had it installed in less than an hour without any hiccups.

Seat of the pants o meter detected a little more power. Definitely makes some noise when you get on her.

Well all I can add is they don't need to make contact with the skin. Sure its better but even into your clothes it will knock you down. Been on the ride when wearing a jacket.

Not doubting your experience JR, but there’s a lot of factors that play in to that and getting full lockup through a jacket is the exception, not the rule especially with the “x” models. They aren’t made to have the “penetration” that the old “m” series did. Disconnect is more and more common the “better” they get. Has a lot to do with how the garment lays on the body as well.

So tasers have basically 4 parts. Only two of which are commercially available for replacement, the cartridge and the digital power Magazine. The other two parts, the pulse generator and the pulse controller are integral to the unit and when they malfunction you have to replace the whole unit. In my agency we don’t have the funds to issue every officer their own taser and many departments are the same way. Pre deployment the officer *should always* remove the cartridge and cycle the weapon for a complete 5 second cycle. PD’s run 24/7/365. They are expensive and we only replace them when they are done, or when taser offers us a screaming hot deal on new units. It’s a coin toss as to whether or not you will get a handle that is a trade in or a replacement. Either way, if it is a three shift department, the unit will potentially have run three times a day for several years. Tasers are solid products, but everything wears out eventually. It’s not like a LE trade in Sig or Glock which generally have more external wear than internal wear, and where every part is commercially available and easy to get. Long story short it’s a 200$ gamble. Might get a great deal, might get a lemon!

Meh... all I can say is good luck! They are generally *junk* by the time we get rid of them... I would spend a couple more hondos and buy a C2

Easier to conceal, just as painful. Painful longer!
With any taser device, it’s only as good as the connection you have on the degenerates end. Spread too close and it’s just a high dollar cattle prod. If they are wearing much more than a T-shirt, it’s a coin toss as to whether or not you will get a good connection. The more you know!

Coffee Induced Early Morning Rant / A Christmas poem
« on: December 24, 2017, 03:43:34 PM »
Not sure where credit is due for this. It was a forward in my email today-

The embers glowed softly, and in their dim light,
I gazed round the room and I cherished the sight.
My wife was asleep, her head on my chest,
My daughter beside me, angelic in rest.
Outside the snow fell, a blanket of white,
Transforming the yard to a winter delight.

The sparkling lights in the tree I believe,
Completed the magic that was Christmas Eve.
My eyelids were heavy, my breathing was deep,
Secure and surrounded by love I would sleep.
In perfect contentment, or so it would seem,
So I slumbered, perhaps I started to dream.

The sound wasn't loud, and it wasn't too near,
But I opened my eyes when it tickled my ear.
Perhaps just a cough, I didn't quite know, Then the
sure sound of footsteps outside in the snow.
My soul gave a tremble, I struggled to hear,
And I crept to the door just to see who was near.

Standing out in the cold and the dark of the night,
A lone figure stood, his face weary and tight.
A soldier, I puzzled, some twenty years old,
Perhaps a Marine, huddled here in the cold.
Alone in the dark, he looked up and smiled,
Standing watch over me, and my wife and my child.

"What are you doing?" I asked without fear,
"Come in this moment, it's freezing out here!
Put down your pack, brush the snow from your sleeve,
You should be at home on a cold Christmas Eve!"
For barely a moment I saw his eyes shift,
Away from the cold and the snow blown in drifts…

To the window that danced with a warm fire's light
Then he sighed and he said, "Its really all right,
I'm out here by choice. I'm here every night.
"It's my duty to stand at the front of the line,
That separates you from the darkest of times.

No one had to ask or beg or implore me,
I'm proud to stand here like my fathers before me.
My Gramps died at ' Pearl on a day in December,"
Then he sighed, "That's a Christmas 'Gram always remembers."
My dad stood his watch in the jungles of ' Nam ',
And now it is my turn and so, here I am.

I've not seen my own son in more than a while,
But my wife sends me pictures, he's sure got her smile."
Then he bent and he carefully pulled from his bag,
The red, white, and blue... an American flag.
"I can live through the cold and the being alone,
Away from my family, my house and my home.

I can stand at my post through the rain and the sleet,
I can sleep in a foxhole with little to eat.
I can carry the weight of killing another,
Or lay down my life with my sister and brother..
Who stand at the front against any and all,
To ensure for all time that this flag will not fall."

"So go back inside," he said, "harbor no fright,
Your family is waiting and I'll be all right."
"But isn't there something I can do, at the least,
"Give you money," I asked, "or prepare you a feast?
It seems all too little for all that you've done,
For being away from your wife and your son."

Then his eye welled a tear that held no regret,
"Just tell us you love us, and never forget.
To fight for our rights back at home while we're gone,
To stand your own watch, no matter how long.
For when we come home, either standing or dead,
To know you remember we fought and we bled.
Is payment enough, and with that we will trust,
That we mattered to you as you mattered to us."

Coffee Induced Early Morning Rant / REAL DADS
« on: December 21, 2017, 07:23:05 PM »
I didn't meet the man I call my dad till I was eleven. He didn't have a whole lot of time to give me the age old, "what every little boy needs to know about becoming a man" kind of education little boys are due. But I hung on to every word I could of my "Cliffs notes" short and condensed version.

Wanna know how to tie a "half hitch" or a "Mississipi boomer knot"? I can show you, because he took the time to show me...

I know there's a thousand different things you can do to make a buck and if you do each of them you're gonna make a thousand bucks... Cause he told me...

I can always find a deal, there's always room to budge, or a discount to be had if you can articulate to the man, not so much why you deserve it, but why he should give it to you anyways... I picked that up as well!

Somewhere along the way, not sure if it was following him in to truck stops or out on the horse trails I picked up a "wink and a smile" that tends to gets me into trouble when not applied judiciously!

"Its a long way from your heart"... Even if it's infected, can't bend it, or really close to your BRAIN, it's still "a long way from your heart" and thus not an emergency!

*Nothing* marinates a ribeye better than Worcestershire and yoshida's gourmet sauce. Mrs. Dash goes good with everything and nothing tastes better after a day on a tractor or a horse than a coke from Alsup's convenience store!

Be versatile, resilient, motivated and persistent. Move with a purpose, buy low, sell high and always make time to better yourself!

Learn from your mistakes, but blame it on your son! Wait! what?? Yeah, the tailgate incident of 95' Dad, when you ripped the tailgate off your truck with the gooseneck and blamed it on me because I was always the one to unhook the trailers! Yup, member that too!

"There ain't a horse that can't be rode, and ain't a rider that can't be throwed" How many different ways is that applicable in life? At fifteen I never understood it as a metaphor I just assumed it was rather specific!

"Left leg on the left side, your right leg on the right and your mind in the middle"

"Give your heart to The Lord and ride like the devil"

I heard it all... Absorbed it... Share it when I can!

Be Proactive; begin with the end in mind; put first things first; think win win; seek first to understand, then to be understood; synergize; and sharpen the saw! Quite possibly the only teenage boy in the state of Texas that could recite Covey's "Seven Habits of Highly Effective People"! Learned that somewhere between Little Rock and Jonesboro at 87 mph with my head beating off of the door molding of an 88 Chevy on a bumpy Arkansas highway! Thanks a lot Bill Clinton!

I could go on and on (taught me that too) but I'll give it a break and spare you every single detail. I hope I grow up to be half the man he was. The best part about my old man was that he didn’t have to do all of that. Wasn’t his job. But the individual who made me was an absentee. When people ask, “Who is your real dad?”, It’s an easy answer.

(Photographic proof of a light grunt with a college diploma!)

So, no kidding... there I was... At the Casey's topping her off with some non-alcoholic petroleum products when a rather brauny biker looking fella walked up and asked me if she was for sale. I told him I didn't think so, but to shoot me an offer. He walked around it, crawled under it, sat in it, popped to hood, lit the engine, kicked the tires and offered me a ridiculous amount of cash. I pretended to think about it and two hours later i was signing her over to the sir with the pork chop side burns.

I guess i wasn't as attached as I thought...

Coffee Induced Early Morning Rant / checking in!
« on: December 08, 2017, 10:32:24 PM »
Evening gents!

Just thought I would do a quick check in! A lot has happened since I was on here last. I have checked in here from time to time but neglected to post a howdy or anything. Shame on me. It's been pretty busy around the HC ranch both personally and professionally. I took a short leave of absence to help a buddy on a contract down south in the ice cream cone shaped continent. That was a whole 'nother world for me!! But it was a great experience nonetheless. Looking at going back again sometime in the 18'. Secondary to all of that, I promoted at my real job to a rank that was more fitting of my duty assignment. I completed an advanced crime scene investigator certification, *AND* (drum roll please) I am due to graduate with my associates in Law Enforcement and My Bachelor's in Criminal Justice Administration next week! Only took 19 years! Lots of other things happening as well in my life. For the most part all good things... I am blessed beyond deserts for sure.

Anyways, I'll troll around the threads for a few and update some of my own stuff. I'll go ahead and let ya'll down now. I sold Tina. Sometimes money just talks to you at the right time and well, I'll just say, I wasn't attached to her to the extent of the amount of cash waved in my face at Casey's the other day! I had to have something so I just jumped into the best first "deal" I could find and ended up in a 2016 Silverado gasser... I'll be throwing some drooler's on a new build thread. I'm not sure you could classify her as a "real man truck" per se... but she's 4wd and has a bed! um sort of... Anyways. Look for the "Diana" thread coming to a forum near you!

Build Day 5-
Tonight I focused on a shotgun of items. I finished up the wheel well beautification project and installed a new Pitman and Idler arm. Those suckers weren't messing around. I have two different sized pullers. I basically just beat them into submission.
My puller was only useful on the pitman. I need a ball joint separator tool in my arsenal I guess. After getting the new parts installed I greased the front end up good and thoroughly.

Then I bled the brakes out. Ill tell you guys something. I'm never asking for help bleeding brakes again. I used the same method I used on Tina. I put a brake fluid bottle north of the bleeder and ran a hose from the bleeder in to the bottle then pump the brakes about twenty times each. I started with the passenger rear, then driver rear, passenger front, driver front. I kept the reservoir topped off and one time around and she was good to go! Even after all the line swapping.

Then I let her run for a few minutes to get her good and warm. She maintained around 45 psi in oil pressure and stayed around 190 on the temp. I changed the oil and filter and then put the wheels and tires on.

I was torn between spending money on some nice rally's with some good street/strip looking tires. I always ran 31x10.50's on her. They are just functional and look good as far as I am concerned. I decided this is a work truck and we would go with 31's again! I found a set of BGF rugged terrains on Craigslist for a couple hondos. They look to be about 85-90% tread and were evenly not worn-

So what did I do next you ask? At 4:00 this morning? Why yes I did take her for a spin! But I didn't have a seat. I quickly installed a type 1- 3.5

I always wanted bucket seats!

I forgot how much power this old girl has! And let me tell you. She's not running very good either! She needs a tune up. But dad gum she's fast and shifted through that 400 turbo barking the tires every time!

So I had to put her up before the neighbors on the other side of the mile section called me to find out who was racing around.

Here's a couple vanity shots to close!

Build Day 4

Last night I worked on cleaning up the wheel wells a little. I devoted one can of rustoleam undercoating and one can of same brand rusty metal primer to each hole. I took all four brake units apart and greased them up good. I changed the three rubber hoses, 1 in the rear and two up front. FYI if you are in need of brake lines, Rock Auto has some on close out. Got all three lines for like six bucks  total!

Here's a before and after of the rear wheel well. Also put new Monroe shocks all the way aroundsie and hacked off the rusty crooked tail pipes.

Build day 3-

Hasn't been much updating on ol blue lately bc my boy is back home in Texas visiting his grandpa for a couple of weeks.

However this is the time of year for me I don't sleep much so I found myself in the garage making up with her after all these years she's been neglected. I only took a few pics along the way. First off my goal 1 was to get her moving in and out of the garage under her own power again so I could put Tina in out of the thunder boomers.

I put the new tank together and stabbed the sending unit in her and put her back home. The passengers side isnt near as bad as the drivers side. Just the way the lines are laid out. While under there I put in a new fuel filter, and a tank switch valve. Those notoriously go out at the worst times and get stuck between both tanks. I used to keep a couple nipples in the tool box to bypass it when it smoked.

Then I put the new sending unit in the drivers side tank and slammed her home. I installed a new fuel pump relay and hit the key and I heard that beautiful pump whirrrrrrr. So I had to pour some gas in her and see if she'd run. I took a video and sent it to my boy. She ran! Boy she sounded good!

A lot of nothing really happened yesterday. We dropped the tanks. Here Stetcyn is asking, "how much is this going to cost"? That tank had various parts of the fuel sending unit floating around inside of it along with a crap ton of rust! I love the sweet smell of varnished gasoline!

Rock Auto gon love me!

Well i last drove it in 2007. It sat at the ex wife's house for four years with her refusing to let me take it. It didn't run. She filled it with trash and crap. Then when she was evicted, she abandoned it and I retrieved it. It sat at my old house until 2013 when I moved it to the farm. It's been sitting at the farm in the weeds since then. It's ready for some TLC.

No go on the vinyl?
Correct, I don't like that look, seems to be a trendy fad and personally your truck is not trendy,  it's probably closer to old school.

Don't take it the wrong way as I love the style and look of your truck.   But don't like when they put the new truck style mirrors either

Not taken wrong. I'm on the fence about it myself. Just saw it on another pickup so thought I'd try it out
