Real Man Knowledge base / Re: Quick handgun advice
« on: May 07, 2015, 05:16:28 PM »
I do own a gun without a safety but I personally believe there are better options on weapons than just having no safety. ( granted it will cost more for safety features) There are a number of handguns that have passive safety features that make it safer to use and reduce accidental discharge when not intending to fire a weapon. For example, my Springfield armory XDM has safety features in the grip to prevent firing if the gun is not gripped in position to fire and a safety trigger that must be squeezed and will not  fire from the tip of the trigger being snagged.  These safety features increase safety without requiring any added steps to have the weapon ready to fire. Just my 2 cents.
I believe he was referring to active safeties. We all agree safe actions are preferred! Welcome to RealMan!

i had a 69 F250 Ranger. 390 V8 and C6 auto tranny... that truck was by far my favorite truck. I wish id have kept it... Twin i beam front end rode like a cadillac...

So, Don, I think HC might be implying something!
....from the Winchester page:

“The influx of new female shooters to the outdoor/shooting sports category is significant and we are committed to making their experiences positive when it comes to selecting the appropriate gear, which includes ammunition,” said Brett Flaugher, vice president of sales, marketing and strategy.

Lol! Lower recoil is cool for all sexes!

hahahaha

606
The thing is whether you are shooting .22 or .45 the fundamentals don't change. Only time between discharge and sight alignment recognize. We don't press the trigger and make our weapons fire, we allow them to fire... You shouldn't allow yourself to rapidly engage with a .22 simply because your weapon system doesn't move as much. We still get back on the front post, level, center and press, repeat... That is how we become hand gunners... Too often I see know-it-alls on the range, making it rain down range with great ferocity and vigor hoping they are hitting center mass, citing "point shooting". The truth is "hope" is not a tactic.

More later... Dinner bell

607
Yea that shooting what you carry part is spendy.

I used to sling 115 gr 9mm like it was candy, then load up on hydra-shock for my carry time. Thought I was doing things right then my B.W. buddies splained things to me
So I get into this .40 G23. I like that gun
I am shooting ball like I was with the G19, but recently switched to the expensive stuff. This weekend went through two 25 round boxes ricky-tick. And that stuff's not cheap!
But recoil is definitely different (more) with the mo-powerful ammo.
Maybe I'll be rich someday and shoot good ammo like it's .22LR
I'd like you to try these and see what you think! I think they are highly versatile in the short to medium barrels and are contoured and loaded the same... They are a smooth shooting round and I have been highly impressed with their range performance...

http://www.winchester.com/library/news/Pages/winchester-w-train-and-defend.aspx

608
.45, .40, 9mm.... Shoot quality ammo you can afford to train with and recognize all weapons systems weaknesses before deploying them... But train often and carry always and you will be light years ahead of any degenerate mope who wishes to bestow harm upon you and yours!

609
With the 40 I get the best of both a 45 and a 9mm. For the 45 to be accurate many shoot the 185jhp, well now you have a 40 cal.

Seen the 9mm and 38 make nice holes, then the guy gets mad. Remember having to assist coroner one time looking for a 9mm in someones posterior. They could see it in the xray but the round kept moving in the 500 lbs lard and this was not a mortal wound, but I bet it was close to his brain,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

Oh I like the 9mm for a backup. Have nice Keltec that fits in the shorts pocket just fine.
I would simply rebut by asking, what was the ammo used? Was it Winchester white box or speer gold dot 147gr? How long ago was this? We can't pigeon hole ourselves into generalized thinking of simple caliber v. Caliber... Without close examination of actual rounds there's no comparison or variables to account for. The one shot stop is the exception, not the rule. All handgun rounds are generally inferior. I can PM you a pic of a gaping chest wound created by a .380 and two .45 slugs stuck in a guys skull that just made it through the skin. *both* point blank shots. But I'm sure you have seen the same stuff! All primary duty caliber rounds are roughly equally inferior Scientifically for their own reasons...

610
So sad all you old farts  ;) are so hung up on the .45! No love for the 9mm... I guess I could sit here all day and debate with you citing ballistic studies and real world experience but at the end of it we will still just be some no name dudes stretching our egos! Well here are a few people who can shed some light for us! Might wanna re-cast your votes!
9mm!!
Recoil mitigation
Capacity
Cost to train
Millions of dollars spent to make the 9mm perform the way we want it to!
Penetration! Yes, 9mm blasts glass for days. .45 HP's leave most of their meat on the glass! Try it for yourselves...
.45 HP's fill with clothing particles, fail to expand properly...

So what you're saying is, I should alternate HP/Ball in my .45 and double tap, bend over to pull up my socks and fart between engagements?  OK, seems excessive, but I'll give it a try.........all that bending over is gonna kill me, so I'll just switch over to Mandels and skip that part?  ???
Or you could carry both! Shoot assess and pull your other if previous engagement wasn't effective! I like the socks and farting part! Mandals are a nice touch as well!

Thanks for the heads up guys! My general comes highly regarded and a good friend of mine is business partners with him. We have an area home builders association that takes care of the riff raff builders like the mafia. I'm not sure if yall remember but we (in Joplin) had a little wind storm come through almost four years ago that destroyed a third of our town. Dozens of gypsy contractors rolled through and stole a lot of people's money and left them with half finished houses. Basically all the local GOB builders got together and formed a union... I mean an "association". They QC each other and keep everyone honest. If you screw up and fail to take remedial action you are banished from the HBA and subsequently your licensure. But regardless, my years as a young lad building the Dallas suburbs and supervising immigrants will lend me a hand here!

Secondary to that, it is only a mile from where I work so I can be an ever present thorn in their side... Thirdly, I have remote viewable surveillance at the gate and in the property shortly... My phone dings every time someone crosses the threshold. Pipe fencing and natural geography lend itself to only two routes by which the mounted individual could enter. I have been looking in to some options for placing a perimeter wire of some sort that will alarm when it's broken. But the cost is tremendous and with the livestock I don't think it will work.

There are a couple reasons for the detached garage... main one being because, "that's what momma wanted". Really not much to explain after that but also, grants a little more time in the event someone leave a pile of gas rags next to a pile of saw dust and tries to burn the place down. Then we have the fact that I can test and tune the lawn mower without filling the house with exhaust fumes. But most importantly, for whatever reason, the money of the operation, "Momma" that is.... It's what *she* wanted! lol!

I appreciate the congrats and kind comments! This is going to be an undertaking of mega proportions. I will keep this thread updated as we go! The greatest, for me anyways is on cold winter mornings, I can look out my big bedroom window in my shorts and flip flops ad wait for that walking venison doe loin to mosy by down the tree line at 150 meters, then step outside, and fill my tag... Is that really hunting?? No, It's population management! It's feeding less fortunate families.. (loins fer me tho). I will obviously still hunt my stands on top of the bluff, but I wont have to get up so dang early to make the trek. just get dressed and step off!

I am so tired of living in the subs I cant stand it! I mean, the other day I was out on my own damn porch cleaning the duty guns when one of my jerk off neighbors decides to call the cops on me... Yeah, that didn't go over very well! Did I mention, I was voted in high school most likely to be booted out of a homeowners association?? I mean if you cant use your four wheeler to pull up rose bushes without offending some hippy ass hole, what can you do anymore? One day I had a sick calf, so I took him to the vet and he shot him full of high powered abx's. One of those kinds, It's either going to kill him, or fix him. I left him in the stock trailer and pulled it to the house so I could keep an eye on the little fella and three days later, I got a letter advising me of all the covenants I had broken... (they didn't even ask how the calf was... he made it by the way)

If any of ya'll have any suggestions on anything during the building process, don't hesitate to speak up. If you have any experience with certain products, mainly windows! let me know!

Stay Staunch gents

On an unrelated note, I like when guys aren't afraid to use the term "assault weapon"... It pisses me off to no end when "pro 2A" jerk offs get all bent when you say assault weapon like its a dirty non politically correct word... Weapons are for assaulting and defense plain and simple! Secondary and tertiary to that they are for sporting and hunting! If the NRA would get off the sporting and hunting band wagon when talking to the media and come out and say why we REALLY aren't going to give up our guns, I'd prolly pledge my membership... Until then my monthly dues will go to beans and bullets.

Edit- obviously not saying pro 2A people are jerk offs... Just the ones who cite sporting and hunting! :)

First hand I have found the 14.5" AR platform to be the most versatile in the arsenal. I like the fact I can get plenty of speed out of the longer barrel while maintaining the ability to effectively engage targets from the seat of any vehicle. An inch longer and I wouldn't be able to do that. The 14.5 means no tax stamp or registration like an SBR would require but maintains itself as an effective CQB rifle. The report is not distinguishable from a 16 or even 18 inch rifle from behind the gun. The 10" is quite loud and obnoxious  in my experience when not suppressed obviously. As far as experience hunting humans goes, the .556 has been pretty effective no matter what the Internet forums and fanboys think they know! A properly built AR will out perform a substandard built AK... Just like a properly built AK will out perform a substandard built AR... There's no reason two properly built weapons can't live and fight together in the same AO! The primary issue of any weapons system is the ego of the operator!

I have been slowly buying out my neighbors. The parent property where the house sits is 60 acres. I own a twenty acre tract across the street and 160 acres next door is promised to me when the old man that lives there now doesn't want to mess with it anymore. The property I'm on now has 4 springs that run year round. Pond is always full sand stocked with bass and catfish. Abundant population of deer and turkey. About twenty acres of natural hardwoods. A wet weather/spring fed stream that runs year round. House is 975 feet off the road. It's by no means low profile. It is my wife's Camelot. (I'd live in a Morton building with a bunk bed) lol. We have 9 kids between us, so this should be enough room for them. There are provisions for a bug-out site within a reasonable distance on site that make the location even more perfect.

JR, pulled a similar stunt with a lunch box on an anti piracy training I was conducting for the Kenyan navy. Put a fake bomb in a lunch box and they threw it to the side as they raided our boat. I had their team leader open the box after we indexed and he yells "BOMB" and they all jumped off the boat.... We all laughed and laughed! They were a funny bunch of dudes very simple.

Funny every time we travel TSA pushes me through.... I should be a ringer for a screening with my civy passport history, (always traveled blue), military aged male, shaved head, military build..... But not ONE single time have I been pulled aside! My wife however, every... Single... Time!!!! Pisses me off to no end... The only place she's ever traveled abroad is Ireland and there aren't too many 5' nothin attractive IRA operatives looking to bomb Fresno Cali I wouldn't think......... Never saw her profile come across my SIPRNet email anyways..... On the last flight I took even the Muslim dude in line with us had a whiskey tango foxtrot look on his face... So we got to chatting and he said he had NEVER been pulled aside for "special screening" and neither had any of his close Muslim friends!! I guess we are getting off topic....
Bobby, don't think you could break this one... I've tried save putting it in a vice and taking a hammer to it or twisting it in opposition with 24" pipe wrenches...

Pros- positive solid retention buckle, plastic (handy for airport security), no tail to weave through, can buckle your pants back together during public restroom ops to keep your gear from falling all over the floor

Cons- wife looks at it funny and can't figure out how to undo it!  ;) :-[ ???

He really wants to, but he has a lot of growing up to do yet! Im not gonna lie, I'll be torn if he enlists.  On one hand proud and beaming and on the other apprehensive. I'm not 100 percent sure if he enlists, I wont re-up myself. ;) If he goes, it will be right out of high school probably. He has had a rough life and is a super resilient kid. Crazy quiet and contemplative. I have three boys with my practice wife and he is the oldest. He has seen alot of my assault pack on my way to a plane. He always laid a heavy burden on himself while I was away, being the oldest boy and all. He had a baby brother pass away when he was 5 and still remembers it vividly. He suffered through his mom and I's divorce and her subsequent attempts to destroy our relationship. Now Weston's cancer and treatments. He has a lot of me in him. (which may be bad! lol) I see a lot of me when I was growing up in him. He is caring and compassionate which I believe is core facet of a warrior. His "calling" is budding I believe. Much earlier than mine did. Granted he is surrounded by more influence than I was. We will see what happens. I know in some way he will lead a life of service, just not sure in what capacity and Im not going to push him in any certain direction as far as careers go. We will just have to see how he blooms gents!

Just wanted to get some pics up. I will outline what we have here this eve-
from left to right, top to bottom

the ranger short stop by Tops Knives
1095 high carbon steel, linen micarta handle 3 1/8" blade
I carry this on my person as an EDC defensive knife horizontally right over my belt buckle. $90.00

The Coye Ridgeback designed by Bill Coye, down the road in Tulsa OK. distributed by Boker.
440C Stainless, milled G10 scales 3 3/8" blade
When I get a good sheath made for it, I may carry it in the same manner as the ranger, the handle is a little more bulky however.  Main reason I bought it was because it looked cool and felt great in the hand. $85

The second two are Boker's but Im honestly not really sure on the specs of them. I have a local store who is close to the boker CEO so all of their discontinued lines wind up on his shelves and its a grand day when he calls me to tell me he has new merch.
I carry one lashed to the shoulder of my swat loadout and the other in the custom leather sheath my dad made on my ankle for duty.

Recon Tanto by Cold Steel
AUS 8A, Kray Ex handle, 7" blade
This is the camping, fishing, garage, do all hack a coconut knife! 70$??

Zero Tolerance 0170
Sandvik 14C28N DLC coated, G10 machined handle, 6.12"
This is lashed to my critical incident response bag and so far it hasn't fallen out or anything so I'd say it's good to go!

:) :) My fav- Boker Orca!
X15T.N, Kray ex handle, 5 1/4" blade.
If you aren't familiar with the steel, it is the same stuff the ball bearings in jet engines are made of I guess, It's damn hard. This is my, I'm feeling chuck norris today, headed to the farm, need to belt a large fixed blade knife!. Its heavy in the handle but hacks well. Speaking of hacking, it has a sharpened edge along the back side of the blade for hacking so youre killing side remains serviceable. However, It is damn hard and takes an edge well and keeps it. Designed and issued for German Special Forces, GSG-9. It's made for land or sea applications. This was another pick me up from the boker guy. They are in the 2-250 range if you can find them. This knife is discontinued but there is a "orca Gen 2" out there. I love this knife btw.

Will get to the folders tomorrow maybe! headed out in the fray gents...

I dont know much about terminology as far as "flood" or "throw"

Flood : In an enclosed area how much will the light allow one to see objects of interest to the sides of the focused light spot, WITHOUT focusing the light directly at the aforementioned items.

Throw : How FAR it will throw light.

But thank you for the KIGS level brief of the M600. I was looking at one. And as someone who has used Streamlight and now Surefire, which is your preferred? Or are you like me and can/will make it work with whatever you get your hands on?

Bobby in for the technical save! thank you sir! I prefer this as my weapon light now buddy. I dont think Ill change again. Streamlight makes great products though. I wish surefire would get on the strobe bandwagon. A strobing light is uber versatile not only for discombobulating degenerates but even dogs hate it. I was out on a run the other night and had my protac 1L by streamlight in hand. It's about 110 lumen EDC style light. One of my neighbors guard dogs was unsecure without a commander and came out to visit me and have some lunch. I would hate to ruin anyones guard dog for doing his job and my force continuum consisted of flash light, mini expandable baton, and glock 19... I strobed my little light at him and he wasn't having any... funny thing is, I cant decide whether or not to call my neighbor and tell him I found cujo's off switch or just keep it to myself! I think I'll keep it to myself!

Firearms / Surefire Scout Light review
« on: March 26, 2015, 05:23:44 AM »
So a "no BS/Grunt level" review on this gem.

The surefire M600 ultra scout light from here on out referred to as m600.

I was able to pick one up at my local bullet slinger shop for $279. You can prolly expect to pay up to $300 or more depending on where you are. IMO its well worth the money for the quality. sure you can prolly find some chinacom piece that puts out double the lumens and has a cute laser pointer on it but dont bet your ass on its reliability. I'd bet my ass on this dudes reliability. Round count is pushing 3k with about 500 under illumination. hasn't missed a beat.  I would definitely spend a little extra and get the switch system with the constant on and the pressure switch $75-$100. I ran a momentary only light for a period of time and found that it is very taxing on your dexterity if you need to keep it on for a period of time.

Surefire says you are looking at about 1.5 hours run time at a "tactical level" of light. I let it run the other day to see if I could melt it or cause it to break glass and I would say at 1.5 hours you are running close to half lumens. at 3 hours your done. Put a fresh set of batts in it and it's good to go. At about an hour, figuring the light was as hot as it was gonna get, I dumped two mags rapidly under lume and then submerged it in water for about ten seconds or so... no blinks.

I dont care about finish but if you are prima donna like that you will be pleased. several call outs, and training exercises and its just as purdy as it was when i unboxed. granted i dont fall down a whole lot and generally dont bounce my weapon off of rocky faces anymore, but the manner in which it is positioned one would assume it would be a contact point and muzzle blast in itself would effect finish but it's good to go. enough on that.

I dont know much about terminology as far as "flood" or "throw" and dont care to google it. but i'll say i have yet to be in a dimly lit situation where I wished I had a better light. Maybe everything else, I have used up to this point has been junk... idk. but i dont have any complaints. It produces a sharp flinch worthy blinding light. I say that because every mope I have lit up with it has thrown their arm over their eyes when it gets pointed at them. This is important because not only is it disorienting, it can be used for cover to conceal the movement of the home team.

i haven't found anything disappointing with it yet. The mount came loose on me but i hadn't loctited it yet so that was my bad. hasn't come loose since. outside temp ranges have been from the single digits to the 60's so far and it fires off every time.

Im not gonna rate it but i'll recommend it. If you have any other questions dont hesitate to ask! most importantly they are designed and mfg'd in murica.

When I was in reception at Benning. Someone fell asleep on fire watch or something and the entire battalion was woken up! Some 450 of us and marched in our white marshmallow suits to the PT sand pit where they proceeded to smoke us until daylight. The commander of the reception bat put an end to it was the scuttle butt because we had somewheres around twenty joes injured or quit. It was freezing cold and raining like a SOB! On our March back to the CTA, a big burly bull chested tabbed drill simply had us chant "Boots" every time our left foot hit the ground! When we all fell into step and in cadence I remember feeling like I couldn't imagine being anywhere better! The rain and the dim street lights and all the buzzed heads made me think of the Jews being marched to their death, but in contrast we were being marched to train to fight for the oppressed... Was a quite profound moment in my life!

Coffee Induced Early Morning Rant / Behold the sheepdog

We are all familiar with grossmans speech on sheep I'm sure. Here is a little something I wrote the other night in therapy-

Been having some demons surface lately- not sure what kicked it off. Most of the time, I'm driving and I get this sudden sense of dread and scenarios start flooding my mind- explosions- people jumping in front of my vehicle- body falling on my windshield- for the most part it's a tight blink and a head shake to get it out of my face- but it's that sudden onset from condition yellow to red then trying to bring myself back down again that's the most taxing- anyways, I'm not afraid of sharing, so don't be afraid to discuss! Here Ya go!

Cave Canem (Beware the Dog)

Behold the sheepdog,
for he is sublime yet mortal.

Behold the sheepdog,
for his capacity to act violently is proportionate only to his clemency.

Behold the sheepdog,
for his proficiency in his craft will be most evident to those who harbor evil within them.

Behold the sheepdog,
for the mensuration of his resiliency to antagonists is incalculable.

Behold the sheepdog,
for he will carry the battle.

Behold the sheepdog,
but beware…

Im concerned that this SBC fuel pump delete mod is going to be a problem! Is that CHROME??

What if haj blows your fender well off in a fire fight and there you are chugging along in stealth mode at a thousand meters down range of some north korean long gunner and he catches a glint off of that shiny piece of hardware??

Seems we need to mitigate the risk associated with all of that hippy chrome you are using!  ;) ;)
