Well, today (yesterday)the Hide Site/Retirement Site just took a giant leap towards no longer being a Hide.  I may have to change the title on my build thread....to something like Money Pit/Retirement Site.....or Spa Site/Retirement Site.....or I Can't Retire Site.....

Wife signed the contract with the pool builder and they break ground next week.  Will have to put a camera on it to see how many critters come out of the woods to swim in it....

ROFL.  Don't sprain a knuckle writing that check...

I'm good with engine internals but transmissions have always intimidated me.  I do also understand the need to sometimes just stroke the check..

I’m thinking that I may wedge and glue the studs, and then use Simpson hangers to hold the roof joists vertical to gain more strength and a deeper insulation cavity. Will start mocking some stuff up soon

The 7mm round is very hard to beat.  If I had plenty of time and nothing else to do, I'd like to build a 7mm Allen Magnum, which is based on a necked down 338 Lapua case.  Spits out some stupid fast pellets.  200 gn bullet at 3300fps

here's some brain candy for you...

Pulled the damaged drive from my desktop raid array and replaced it with a new 1TB hard drive and restored the array to redundancy.

Now that i'm done playing IT professional, I ready to DOT up some threads....

So, after replacing a 1TB hard drive and rebuilding the raid array in my desktop, i was able to initially play around with some numbers for the .224 Valkyrie

They seem to have a different BC for the 90gn SMK than is in my software.  Trying to duplicate their advertised dope, I had to increase the BC on the SMK to .287 from the sierra advertised .256.  Not sure how they got there.

Sure, it gets there quick but with very little energy at 1000.

Conversly the 200gn SMK from a 300wm at the same velocity will deliver more than double the energy downrange.  Loaded to the same muzzle velocity it gets there about the same time and the valkyrie needs about 1/3 an MOA less windage.

If you are putting rounds downrange with hate and discontent, I'd want the 30 cal weapon.  If I were punching paper, I might consider it, if it werent for what I would believe would be very short barrel life.

No 338 planned. Suppressors work on volume. My 30 cal thunderbeast is rated for 300wm but a larger volume would make tame the extra powder capacity. 338 cans have a lot of volume and would work well and it would allow me to build a 338 later should the fancy strike me.

It’s a sledgehammer for sure.  Not a pleasure to shoot at least without a muzzle brake or suppressor.  Want a 338 class can to put on it and a new long range optic before I start shooting it again

I can live with holes in the side and put sealant over them. I won’t put holes in the roof. Walls will support inner roof. Just need to make sure wall studs are secure as I will be sheathing the inside in plywood and attaching shelves etc.

Baylee, you ought to hug your dad.  I have 4 vehicles right now and a 14 year old.  Here's the plan:

The mint condition honda odyssey mini van will be the test monkey for the first driving daughter.  I told her that if she drives it for two years and does't wreck it, she gets to hand it down to her younger sister and take over momma's SUV or get something different.  If she wrecks it, she keeps it.  The youngest wants my 2001 duramax crew cab 4wd.  If she drives for two years and doesn't wreck what ever she starts in, I may just let her have it...maybe

They do JR.  It's stupid expensive.

https://insofast.com/products/container-inserts/

I can get spray foam for 1.25 sqft to fill 2x4 cavity, 1.40 to fill 2x6 cavity.

I plan to install studs (skinny side) in the recessed part of the corrugation and then bridge across the top with 2x4, in essence making a drop ceiling to install electrical and insulation.

I'll need a mini split that senses humidity and find a way to introduce a small amount of fresh air as it will be a big Styrofoam cooler

Looking for ideas on how to attach the studs to the steel container.  thought about drilling and screwing from the outside but that would be about 100 holes.

So jared was right.  Handling those 4x8 hardie panels is tough and I was unable to get them lifted into position on the ceiling of the porch.  I put a cleat on the wall and tried to rest one end on that cleat and pivot the panel up.  No dice.  Too flimsy and risked breaking it in the middle.

So I think I'm going to build a rig that has 2 2x4s with hinges that gets temporarily screwed into the wall.  Place the panel and pivot it up.  Supported by the 2x4 it should be easier to get pivoted up and put another 2x4 underneath to hold it in place then I can nail it..

We shall see.  Probably going to trench for power, water and ethernet soon to get that out of the way as I need to be able to work inside with some lighting.

The main house is spray foam. The casita and the shipping container will both be spray foam as well. 18 seer two zone mini split and it will be very energy efficient.

Need to string more wire but it was too
Nice a day to be working inside.

So I built stairs.  Tired of making that one 26 inch step to the porch. Gets old when you are going in and out and in and out.

Once I get the cans wired I’ll probably run an extension cord to them so I can light them up and see better until I get the 100amp subpanel, water, and Ethernet run.

The thing that I really like about the Ghost Rocket is the overtravel adjustment.  When installed correctly, it allows for less than a 16th of an inch reset for follow up.  I have some here along with some NIB unmolested glocks.  I promised to do a write up on it a while back and I will as soon as I get the shipping container mods done and all my reloading stuff moved from my bro-in-laws.

I'd like to shoot the newer gens.  I stopped buying new over the counter a while back so I haven't had the chance.

Well I got 12 cans inside installed, the box for over the sink pendant light, most electrical boxes, the cans on the porch and electrical boxes in the ceiling of the porch.  Started stringing some 14/2 and bought the 100 amp panel but where I wanted the panel to go on the inside it wouldnt fit between the two studs.  So I'll be returning that and getting a panel for the outside.  No big deal, except that it's double the cost.  But then I'll put it closer to the front side corner so the amount of 3-3-3-5 cable will be about 12 foot less which will be about a wash since the cable is $5/ft.

JR I have a motion on the shop for when the wife arrives in the dark. She doesn't ever seem to have the flashlights I put in her car....

I may put a three way switch and run the traveller over to the porch on the main house or outdoor kitchen to allow for turning the lights on when moving from the house to the casita

Or I can have dusk/dawn led stair lights just to give enough light to see the steps in the dark.

We'll see.  I'm making this stuff up as I go

Alright, DOT army, back at the casita this weekend. It’s rainy today so I’m working some electrical inside and on the porch. Got two gooseneck farm lights. One to go over the door and one over the window on the second floor. They’ll have those low watt Edison bulbs where you can see the elements.  Then the porch has two small can lights and some outlets in the ceiling.  Instead of ceiling fans I plan to get some wall mount oscillating fans that put out much more than ceiling fans.

Shawn I have that same talent.  It’s really about helping people. Sometimes it’s about helping them to understand that the role they’re in is not the right fit.

One other thing as a leader I believe.  Always have bullets in the gun. I always have 2-3 active relationships with candidates so that when an opening happens I already have someone to put in the job.  It keeps you from making a hire out of desperation which haunts you for years.

The only way human capital changes is to see high turnover rates. People always complain but few really find a better job.  If they are actually leaving for better jobs then human capital will change the ranges.

Those are tough conversations all around.  I prefer to hit them head on and pulled my team in to a room to address them all.

We have a rating system from 1-5 with 3 being "meets expectations".  The company expects us to have the  bell curve centered over the 3, meaning most employees are meeting expectations and then a smaller percentage slightly higher and even a smaller percentage a "5" meaning exceeded expectations and likely a really small percentage a "2", meaning needs improvements.

Those are guidlines and the 1-5 rating is our performance relative to our expectation of each employee.  That's the key.  We have high expectations as a high performing company and when an employee performs at a high level those expectations go up.  In essence the bar, gets raised.  So two poeple dong the same job, one a very high performer and one an average performer, can get ratings that on the surface seem odd.  The high performer can get a 3, because they've shown they are really good at what they do and the average performer could get a 4 or 5 if, in a given year, they really step up their game and exceed expectations.

Now, here is the real trick.  Our numerical ratings does not dictate salary increase, except that if you are rated a 2, needs improvement you would not get a rate increase.

On average, over time, the individual's performance dictates there relative salary level compared to their peers.  While those same two employees might have the ratings discussed above, the higher performer , on an absolute basis, should be higher compensated.

Now for me, the real trick is that I usually only get about 2% of my total salary pool to spend on salary increases.  That makes it tricky to give out increases that are meaningful.  That means some people get less, or none and some get more.

Tough messages, but that's what they pay me for and why we are an "at will" employer.

Dave, what I udnerstand, and I am by no means an expert, is that insulating under a slab is really only done for slabs that will have radiant heat.

Areas above grade are usually insulated in colder climates because they become an unlimited heat sink.
