grill/smoker build
« on: December 08, 2015, 04:35:23 PM »
so I came across these 2 beauties today

and I thought I would do something like this

http://www.thesmokering.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=31105

I even thought about something like this

http://www.smokingmeatforums.com/t/86923/uds-how-i-built-mine-horizontal-w-pic

thoughts? donations?

I will see how much of this I can do on the free side but I know that there will be some metal stock that I will have to buy.

You thought smoker, I immediately thought of a grill.

I'll take donations whatever you cook and want to give away I'll eat....... ;)

Edit: I like the first design better (smaller footprint). You may think about solder versus that fire proof Styrofoam he used. I also didn't read what he used but in the firebox I would line bottom with firebrick or use a thicker metal like 1/4" Just my 2 cents

Multiple purpose design: go double barrel stove with door in top barrel and grate- small slow fire to smoke and big roaring fire to heat your shop........once you leave Texas!

These are true 55 gal drums

if i was to use the double barrel kit, that thing would stand roughly 5ft tall.

If i put wheels on it, it will be 6ft tall.

Eye level to check on the product, closer to the mouth too!!!!

Nice Nate.  I like the first one. Cool design.

My smoker build is on the back burner until I get done lowering The Bus.  I almost bought a plasma last weekend but bought the 6 inch lift instead.
Kids today don't know how easy they have it. When I was young, I had to walk 9 feet through shag carpet to change the TV channel.

so I decided to start with a UDS (ugly drum smoker) build first.  that way I can get my design completed and my parts list compiled for the other drum.

here is the parts list for the UDS:

1 x 3x4"/1" ball valve
3 x 3x4"/1" x (close) straight pieces of black pipe
1 x 3x4"/1" x 2/3" straight piece of black pipe (for the ball valve)
2 x handles
- assorted bolts/washers/lock washers/nuts for handles
1 x thermometer (I picked mine up from academy sports, you can get them at homedepot, lowes, any BBQ store online)
2 x 3/8" x 3/8" brass male-male compression fittings (for the temp probe ports)
2 x solid brass caps to fit the above brass fittings (that way you can close off the ports when not in use)
4 x 3/3 1/2" bolts
8 x flat washers for the bolts above
8 x nuts for the bolts above
2 x 22" replacement grates for weber kettles
1 x 17" charcoal grate for weber kettle
1 x 2" x 6" conduit pipe (for the smoke stack)
1 x 2" conduit cap for the pipe above
1 x 55" x 9" piece of expanded steel (for the coal basket)
6-8 ea x u bolts (or however you are going to mount the grates)
1 x can cooking spray (used for 1st seasoning smoke)
1 x bag of charcoal
several small chunks of wood

tools required:

drill
pipe wrench
brill bits (so you can make the smaller holes)
metal hole saw bits (so you can make the 4 holes on the bottom of the barrel for the air inlets and the ball valve)
propane weed burner torch (easiest way to burn out the barrel, especially if you live in the city limits)
20lb propane canister
assorted wrenches
*welder * optional but not needed

this build is on the easier side, it is just time consuming because of all the measuring and drilling.  here are pics of the process, I will show pics of the first seasoning smoke tomorrow.  I will also add step by step inst if need be?

I started at 0830 GMT this morning.

At 0930 GMT I had the coals smoldering away and she was holding steady at 225deg.

Now it is just fine tuning all of the ports/vents to get her figured out so she can run on her own and to see just how long 1 basket of coals/wood chunks will burn at 225deg for.

Once I get the controls figured out, I will put 2 fatties on to help with the seasoning, and just because I wanted some smoked sausage.

We don't have a smoker yet, but the simplicity and assumed low cost of this one and ease of obtaining 55gal barrels, makes this tempting. Look forward to seeing the food that comes off it. Nicely done on the build though, nothing fancy, but effective none the less.
