Did something really stupid.
« on: July 23, 2017, 04:50:38 PM »
Just got my pickup out of the shop. 07 2500hd duramax. Turbo was bad. So I got a new one plus 4 in exaust egr blocker and 65 hp single tune.
We took off Friday for a camping trip 250 miles away. It thought it would be good test for it. I weigh 17,000 and change fully loaded. On the way out it drove great. No problems. Tranny temp on 200 coolant temp sitting on 210. Completly normal temps for my truck when towing.
I got up there to the campground and its all uneven and gravel pad. So I get my blocks out to back one side of the camper up on. I spun out in the gravel so I put it in 4x4. Unhooked, parked the truck, got a beer and went fishing. Mind you it's HOT. High 90s heat index in the 100s.

This morning we pack up and hook up. Its high 80s. 15 mph winds. Truck was doing really good u till about 50 miles from home. Trans temp got up to 250 engine temp about 225 and it just didn't seem right. I got to a truck stop 10 miles from home and let her cool down. Got home and unhooked. Took it for a drive just to cool it down. Everything seemed fine.

Then I seen that I never took it out of 4X4 on Friday when I was in such a hurry to get set up. I never noticed it all the way home. I got it cooled down. Checked the tranny fluid. It don't smell burned so I think I'm ok. I'm going to check everything in the morning when its cold. No warning lights came on. I just changed the tranny fluid not even 5,000 miles ago.

Should be ok Jon. I'd probably service the transfer case since it's easy.

Or you could go with 5w30 full synthetic

Kids today don't know how easy they have it. When I was young, I had to walk 9 feet through shag carpet to change the TV channel.

Yup oil change and carry on.
They're made to use now unlike back in the day.

I still have some fluid left from the last change so looks like I'm going to change it again. I don't want to go full synthetic. I'm sure it better but its so expensave. If I ever have to have it rebuilt I will change then.
When I told my wife I had done he said it's karma. Saturday I laughing about a post on a camping group on Facebook. A guy was asking if he should tow in 4x4 or 2 wheel.
It was just too hot to be out on the road towing that much. That last 50 miles where I had problems I seen two 5th wheels with blown tires and a class A motor home on the side of road. I assume over heated. Which reminds me I believe I see a cooling stack tear down and cleaning in my future.

I thought it was supposed to be synthetic in 07 ?!? I know it was dex3 in the earlier ones, but they switched to 6 in the LBZs (or llys) didn't they?
Synthetic would handle overtemps like that without worrying.

Somewhere in 06 they switched to Dex 6 in the trans on the LBZ's.
By 07 for sure it is Dex 6.

I know Dex 3 is one of the options for transfer case. Not sure about 6.
Mine came with the blue smurf juice, but I'm running DEX 3 in it now.

Yeah Sam, I know there was quite the confusion because alot of guys said that their's came with the blue stuff (Autotrac2), but the HDs never came with an auto transfer case...even some of my shop books say autotrac fluid.
I think they switched to dex6 at the same time as the transmissions did.

5w30 synthetic, or dex6 like others have said. I personally put Amsoil Synchromesh in mine when I did the pump rub last year. Supposedly makes it shift easier... but who knows.

Transmission shouldn't care if it was in 2wd or 4wd. Might want to service the front diff though.
