tracey wants to drive the vehicle while its being worked on, but I will have to go thru all of the steering and the general safety stuff first.

so last night I had a surprise waiting for me at the front door when I got home from the VFW.

it contained:

hood hinges x 2
hood hinge bolts
hood hinge springs x 2
new battery tray assembly
battery hold down assembly

so todays objective was to get daisy on a lift outdoors and get her pressure washed underneath so I could see what is going on.  well daisy was having an attitude this morning and didn't want to start.  so the pressure washing was put on hold until another day.  as I started trouble shooting procedures, I determined that whatever moron wired in this here starter solenoid from a 1950's era truck was the issue.  so I went down to the local parts store and got me a new one and got it installed.  after thatshe started right.

so after I smoothed daisy's temperament a little I decided to go ahead and install the new battery tray assembly.  you can see why I just chose to replace it instead of trying to make It new again.  it was completely corroded with battery acid and was bent all out of whack.

I apologize, I forgot to take a pic of the new one installed.

and that is what was accomplished for the days business.

I will be ordering new seals, bearings, races, and gaskets from tate on Monday.  I currently have fluids for a good fluid change on the axels and engine, I still have to get fluids for the trans and the x-case as well as the radiator.  heck, I might as well get a new thermostat while I am draining the cooling system.

so what would it take to swap a NP 203 over to a NP 205?  is there a different adapter from trans to x-case?  are the drive shaft yoke ends different?  how different is the shifter placement in the cab?

I think the 205 will slip right in, shifter in the same local, but the 203 is longer iirc....so the driveline might end up short. What's funny is, I told you I was helping someone yesterday. We were cleaning up an old shop...and I moved a 203 and a 205 around. I could've gave you some exact specs!

so today, tracey asked me if I she could do something to her truck.  so we went to the auto craft shop and I watched her change the oil and the transmission fluid on her truck.  yes that is correct, she was the one that did the work with observance from me.

I didn't take many pictures because there were so many folks there and I didn't want to just go and plaster folks faces up all over the internet with out their permission.

I will show proof the next time that she was the one doing the work.  I did however feel a bit better about the transmission fluid change considering that the pan looked like this when I dropped it.  I have a feeling that a transmission rebuild will be happening sometime soon (knock on wood).

I know that place well, spent many weekends there in the late '80s working on buddies' and my own vehicles.  If its even in the same location...

We don't have anything like that around here. It's probably a good thing, one less form of competition! I swear, there's a better shop/customer ratio here than the school's teacher/student ratio. lol

So I got her up in the air today and gave her a squirt to the undercarriage.  The underside has been coated with somesort of undercoating and it was sprayed on soo thick.  It truly looks as tho somebody either really took care of it or had started on the restoration.

Ill try to get some pics of it here this weekend.

If you're curious, the transfer case tag should be on the front side, between the input and front output, on the case.

yeah I looked there and didn't see anything.  let me go out and start scraping around and see what I can find.

where can I get a gasket for the cover that you see in the last picture?  I know its called the "Front Output Rear Bearing Cover Gasket"  i cant find it in anything other than a whole gasket kit for $50 plus.

here you can see the new hinges installed.

here are the old hood and the new hood before transferring of the hardware.  I did not realize before I started moving hardware and getting the hood installed that the new hood will not work without a little modification.

and here is the new hood installed but not quite matching up.

as you can see, the back on each side of the hood is sticking up and not laying flush with the lines of the body.  now I loosened both hinges and made sure that they were pushed all the way down in the back, and I also screwed in the hood stop bumpers right under the windshield.  I am thinking that I may have to modify the hinge mounting holes to get it to go down in the back?  can somebody provide a little guidance/education to me on this please?

I can't exactly remember, back 20 some years ago, I was a you lad with a Trans Am.
The hood was like that when I bought it.

If I'm thinking right, I ended up using the adjusting slots, and put a tilt into the mounting.
So where you went all the way down, I think I was high on one end and low on the other.

But I could be all full of it to and have this backwards... :-\
Like I said, I was 17, and the year was '90.

The good news is that it's an easy experiment.

Replacement parts rarely fit right. If my memory serves me correctly the drivers door replacement fits well but passengers door is a no go on those trucks or at least they were fifteen years ago anyhow. Start modifying.......

Probably end up elongating the holes at a minimum.

Note the poor fit of the replacement fender on Square D

I'm only going to be able to get it close. I think a perfect fit will not be possible

Concur. there's got to be enough material on the inside of those fenders to slot the holes out. Put your fabrication hat on.

Quite possible in those parts.  When I was stationed down there, vehicle break-ins and thefts were rampant.

Not sure about smuggling, a little to obvious from the outside. A locksmith should have little issue with it. Or just drill the tumbler out since you need a new one with keys anyway.

Heck there are states worse than kali. Even though I have Federal CCW resiprocity in all 50 states they nail people in NY all the time.

In Kali it is supposed to be out of reach of the driver while operating the vehicle, the rounds most be transported away from the firearm (kinda worthless). Just attach the key to the drivers keys, you can't open while driving. But then again they have to know its there!

so we started today off with getting the hood to fit properly.  took everything off and had to elongate the holes/modify the china man hinges.  here you can see a buddy operating his carbide pneumatic grinder to waller out the holes a little.

it took us a few fitting and cutting attempts and we finally got the hood to fit properly.

If you need the promise of eternity in the kingdom of heaven to be a good person … You were never a good person in the first place!
