Build Threads / LML Duramax Silverado Build Thread [Part 1]
« on: September 25, 2014, 02:22:09 PM »
Note to viewers: The following posts from Overwatch and KensAuto are actually Flyin6's, unless noted and highlighted. They were copied from the DF forum, where this project started. The page numbers are not accurate at this time. They will change as this build thread is transferred from it's original setting.

My Build Thread
"CMAX"

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This will be the start of my build thread. My newly purchased 2011 2500HD LTZ will be undergoing a plethorea of modifications to make it more "capable" as it were. I already own a super capable off road sort of semi militarized truck so this one will not focus on the off road thing as the primary design factor.
I think the truck should retain all it's off road prowess and perhaps even be enhanced in some areas such ar undercarriage armor and suspension travel, but I am not going to SAS this truck like I did with my other truck.

Edit: When I wrote this I thought Obama was finished in 1 term...He got re-elected...I have hence forth lost my mind and after some 7oo odd pages from here, you will see I was not telling the truth about the SAS thing, nor have I kept this project as sane as I envisioned when I thought our nation was soon to be saved...

I want it to have good bumpers just in case I need to push stuff out of the way, a self recovery capability if I need that, more engine power but only if it does not adversly affect mileage, much longer range while enhancing the multi fuel capabilities. It would be able to safely carry my family over great distances while negotiating anything from a tractor trail around a field to a debris strewn roadway. Well, more on my thinking and the vehicle mission statement later on as this thread developes. I think some of you will understand where I am going with this especially in view of the particuliar design charactersitics of my Tundra.
So here it is on zero day when I purchased it this past fall

My extensive knowledge with front IFS 4 wheel drive is limited mostly to 1500s.  My 02 Avy ripped through 13 different half CVs, some of those due to my custom fabricated suspension lift.  Once those problems were remedied, I only went through another 2 or 3 joints, but all due to extreme stress while spinning.

I knew some guys who welded the spider gears on 1500 front IFS and it tore through the aluminum housing like it was paper-mache.  Do you have the same worries with the LML front IFS?

Site Rules & Introductions / Everyone's favorite topic...... RULES
« on: September 23, 2014, 09:35:44 PM »
Some of these may not be written in stone, Don reserves the right to do whatever he wants with the site that he owns.  However, let's lay out a few ground rules to keep everybody on the same page.

We reserve the right to amend these rules from time to time.

Ignoring or breaking any of these rules is grounds for deleting the thread or post.
Habitually breaking the rules of the forum will be grounds for deactivating membership.

  • No porn
  • At no time will sexual assault of any kind (talk, referencing, acceptance, committing, etc) ever be accepted here!
  • At no time will Racist Behavior of any kind (talk, referencing, acceptance, committing, acting, etc)ever be accepted here!
  • No "subd" posts, these will be deleted with extreme prejudice. If you want to subscribe, click the "NOTIFY" button on every thread
  • Keep the cursing to a minimum, I understand we're not a bunch of angels around here, but pure vulgarity won't be tolerated
  • Remember why we are all here. Common interests, fellowship, learning, entertainment... notice "bickering" isn't on that list

Not a rule, but a request from your friendly neighborhood admin.  Please try to host images on the web and link to them in threads (see the other sticky in this board) vs just attaching.  Attachments take up storage space that is somewhat limited right now.  As the site grows we'll be able to change that, but try to go a little easy as we get off the ground (no 40MB movie uploads please).

Firearms / Basic firearms education, PT 1
« on: September 20, 2014, 10:57:26 PM »
Other than my wife, my one true love in life is firearms.  Small, crew served, improvised, domestic, foreign, etc.... I don't care.  With that said:

You know those guys you run into at your local gun store (LGS henceforth) who talk about "class 3 weapons" & "it isn't called a silencer, it is a SUPPRESSOR".  Those folks have no clue what they're talking about and you just need to calmly nod your head, softly repeat "yea, ok, sounds good turbo", and back away. Ready for OW's quick breakdown of US firearms history & law?  Ok, good

- 1934 congress passed the National Firearms Act (NFA henceforth)
- the NFA regulates short-barreled rifles (SBR), short-barreled shotguns (SBS), "machine guns", destructive devices (DD), suppressors/silencers, and (MY FAVORITE!!) any other weapon (AOW)
- all of these are fairly straightforward in definition except AOW, which really is just a catch-all that allows the .gov to regulate anything they feel like
- Any firearm that falls in one of the categories above is a Title II weapon
- Any firearm that doesn't fit in an above category but is regulated by the GCA of 1968 is a Title I weapon

Quote
Hey OW, how do I purchase one of these?

Man am I glad you asked!
- Transfers for Title II weapons require an FFL who holds a special occupational tax (SOT)
- There are 3 different classes of SOT, of which the cheapest and easiest to obtain is a Class 3 (this is where the misnomer of "class 3 weapons" comes from)

Do you feel like your constitutional rights have been trampled enough yet?

- Each state is allowed to regulate Title I & II weapons as they see fit
- These laws, as you can probably guess, are absolutely ridiculous and follow zero logic
- In some states you can own a silencer, but not an SBS.  Others allow automatic weapons only up to a specific barrel length
- THIS IS WHERE YOU MUST DO YOUR OWN RESEARCH, typically each state has a very devout group of folks that own NFA items.  Find your respective website or local gathering (most likely a VFW or insane asylum) and make some friends

Let's go over the forms you need to be familiar with:

Form 1
- Used to manufacture a Title II weapon (such as putting a 6 inch barrel on a typical AR15 and making it an SBR)
- No FFL/SOT required
- Corporation, individual, or trust (my recommended method) will fill out the form and submit
- Requires fingerprints, photo, 922g, & Chief LEO signoff if filing as an individual (this can be problematic in Obama territory)
- Requires none of the above if filed as a trust or corporation (see why this is a good option?)
- $200 tax stamp required for ALL classes
- From time of submittal to receiving approval from BATFE takes somewhere around 8 months (this should make you very angry as a law abiding taxpayer)

Form 3
- Used between FFLs w/ SOT
- Tax free
- Shorter approval time, typically takes a month
- Used if you want to purchase a specific item that a dealer out of state has in stock.  You pay that dealer & they fill out the Form 3 with your local dealer's information, then transfer once approved

Form 4
- Used as a purchase to/from a non-FFL w/ SOT (corporation, trust, or individual)
- Important to get these forms with as much filled out as possible from your local dealer.  You're dealing with BATFE now, and they will literally deny an entire transfer due to a misplaced period or poor punctuation
- All items have a $200 tax associated with them except AOWs, which are $5 (not only are they cheap, but there are some REALLY cool AOWs that you can own)
- Same submittal rules as a Form 1 (photos, fingerprints, etc for individuals, none for corps or trusts)
- Same approval time as Form 1 typically, around 8 months

Quote
OK, I've done all that.  Are there any important ground rules?

Uhhhhh, yea.

- Always, always, always carry your paperwork & stamp with your Title II
- Legally, you only have to show this paperwork to a BATFE officer.  However, since the vast majority of Deputy Fifes barely know their own local codes, they will most likely haul you off to jail if you refuse (remember, GWB and Hope and Change has brought you a more empowered police state)
- Technically, you should not take Title II weapons out of your home state without approval from BATFE (AOW & silencers are exempt from this)
- Under NO CIRCUMSTANCE can you loan a Title II weapon to anyone unless they are in the corp/trust it is registered through
- Despite what any crazy weirdo says at your LGS, you do not give up any 4th Amendment rights.  BATFE is still required to have a warrant to search you or your property

Quote
You said something about the GCA of 1968 earlier. What is that?

- Long story short, it stopped the production of all automatic weapons for private ownership
- If the automatic weapon wasn't registered before March or May of that year (can't remember, don't wanna Wiki) it is not legal to own for standard citizens
- Supply and demand..... prices are just a tad astronomical
- entry level is ~$5k, with the really super duper fun stuff running ~$60k

This is a decent intro that every single person who owns a firearm should be required to know IMO.  If you can't pass a test about these regs, you haven't done enough research.

Something else to keep in mind is that the vast majority of municipal police & sheriff's deputies do not know all of the laws & intricacies about the above subjects.  If they want to take you to jail even though you are 100% legal, you need to just let it happen and sue them into oblivion after your rights have been violated.

Quote
How do you know this stuff? Are you just making up your own interpretations?

Some of this is clearly spelled out law, other is interpretation from BATFE's branch chief's (which is essentially law once put into their official signed letterhead). Have known and spoken in detail to a few special agents regarding technicalities, of which there are some pretty funny stories.  Well..... I say funny, but the gross negligence shown by BATFE over the years would be enough to dissolve any standard corporation.

Bug-Out Bag and Camping gear / Vehicle Bag (any platform)
« on: September 15, 2014, 09:20:09 PM »
I have used the same basic vehicle BOB layout since I was 15.  Long before I even knew what  BOB was, there was a voice in the back of my head saying "What happens when you break down on the way to the farm? You won't be in the comfort of your garage, and you're basically screwed".

Any of you that follow my builds or other posts will come to realize that I am borderline obsessed with labeling & laminating important items.  Memory is an important skill to hone for important subjects, but there are certain things you just need to brain dump and rely on good ole Hooked On Phonics.

Pics to come tomorrow.

Site Rules & Introductions / I WANT TO POST LOTS OF PICTURES!!!
« on: September 15, 2014, 07:49:51 PM »
Alright, so you want to post a bunch of pictures, that is awesome.  Good content includes a lot of detailed photos, which we definitely encourage.  Some things to keep in mind

- We're currently limiting the number of post attachments to 4, mostly trying to figure out memory limitations as the site grows
- all 4 attachments must be smaller than 1MB
- individual attachment must be less than 500KB

HERE IS WHAT I SUGGEST YOU DO

This is the same thing I do on every other forum I'm a member of.

Go to the imgur website and create an account. You've basically got an unlimited amount of storage and it also helps in organizing your stuff (super simple to create albums, also allows drag and drop).  Then, using the
Code: [Select]
[img][/img] code insert the direct link between the brackets, like so

Code: [Select]
[img]http://i.imgur.com/meVvl6q.jpg[/img]

and you will get this

Note that if you click on the photo above, it will auto-enlarge to its full size. Right click and choose "View Image" to go to the webpage where it is hosted.

All you have to do is copy and paste your picture links into the image code (which is the button on posts that looks like the Mona Lisa).  Super simple and with the added bonus of embedding in the post itself instead of going to the end.
