Chief??
« on: July 15, 2016, 10:32:08 PM »
I don't know where to put this, so since it's construction equipment, I'll tuck it in here.

You all may recall I was hot on the trail to purchase a Kobelco 200 Excavator about a year ago. But Richard found a defective drive unit in it so we canned the idea.

But the need remains to this day. I still need a digging machine, like all the time. The 200 unit weighing in at somewhere around 50,000 pounds was a bit big and I really wanted a mid sized machine like a Cat 320 or a John Deere 120 or 160.

Well, this just showed up on Craigslist for sale. At under 6,300 hours it is pretty low time. I have been looking in the 9,000-12,000 hour range and pretty worn. The machine is listed for $24,900 so I might be able to squeak it in for around 20K which is on budget for a machine of this size.

Hitachi is pretty good and obviously lasts forever if taken care of.

The Crawler-Loader is named Sarge. I was going to call the Excavator, "Chief."

I'm wondering if this is indeed, Chief???

I'm assuming after all the sarge post purchase issues you'll be having a proficient equipment mechanic look this machine over thoroughly pre purchase?

I will

Cost me a few hundred, but with heavy equipment, sorta necessary.

My other thought on this is buy from a reputable dealer who will stand behind it. Find one & tell him what you're looking for & price range. Be patient & I'm sure he'll have a local customer who will turn one in at some point.

Absolutely!

If the machine doesn't have one, I'll buy a mechanical unit and weld it on

Ya, copy that...

But to my credit or rather if anything good came out of all that on Sarge, the machine was exposed to good mechanics for long enough to get a lot of things fixed right.
It seems to be knocking it out of the park at the moment.

Let's face it you've proven beyond a shadow of a doubt that your place in the tuck is worthy of heavy equipment......

I called for information on that unit today. I got to the sales guy who gave me the number of the owner. I am presently trying to get in touch with him

Now that unit is a 120 size, roughly 24,000 pound excavator

I ran across a good used Kobelco unit in the very town I reside today and went to check it out. It is a 2005, 10 years newer than the Hitachi. It is a 160, or 32,000 pound unit instead of the 24K, so it's roughly 50% heavier. The Kobelco has lower time, some 5400 hours and is in pretty good condition. It doesn't have any leaks, the rotation bearing assembly is tight, as are the arm bushings and lift mounts. The bucket bushing is GONE, as in needing immediate maintenance.

It has a 40" general construction bucket with all new teeth. I'd say the undercarriage is 50%-75% and the tracks grousers look to be full height. Best of all, it has an air conditioner which does blow out cold air! This one has a Mitsubishi diesel engine of around 100 horsepower which started right up with no smoke.

Asking price is $45K
The other unit is $24,900

I'll talk with them some tomorrow, see if anything shakes out.

I may be cooked already. A buyer was supposed to come in today on that very unit...

Why yes I did

So you're thinking the same thing I am...

And check this out. I just got done chatting with the gentleman who owns the Hitachi EX-120 and he said he believes someone was about to put money down on it!

That kobelco started sounding way better at first, then sounded too good to be true toward the end because I assumed it was similarly priced.  But for that much additional money, makes sense that it should be that much better.

Have you thought about renting a smaller sized one for a week to see if can do what you think it can?

I have thought about that. Weekly rates as high as mid 2K range and I only get 2 weeks. I'm the sort that has a job a day forever. Ditch here, pluck a tree there, lift up roofing over there sort of thing. I'd work that machine a little bit each and every week whilst getting big property improvements continuing.

For that reason a reasonably priced machine makes sense to own to me.

I think he meant rent one, a smaller one, to see if it would be big enough for the hide...if it works out, you would still be money ahead by spending on a lesser machine.

Either way, i can't wait for the pics of destruction!

Email inbound, info from Ashley

He said he would not own a kobelco, put 4K hours on a new 160 over 2 years. Junk, only worth what scrap will bring.

Ashley said you can lease them for a year for 2-3k per month. 100% write off & they'll do all maintenance & oil changes you just pay for fuel. Use it for year, get place ship shape & it goes down the road. You lose a motor or hydraulic pump & you'll toss 25k at each item. Ashley has done both.........
