As far as semi-auto hunting rifles go I think it’s your best bet. I had an older safari grade IV that I really liked. It shot good and recoil was very manageable. If you prefer the older steel/wood guns you should be able to find a used safari for the same money or less.

Kind of pricey for a 30-06. Maybe it's me but with that much money you could get a good bolt action, a scope and some bullets. Then again, I'm searching for a simple wood stocked 30-06 that will only be used for deer hunting... perhaps that skewed my thoughts.

If you need a semi auto for hunting you need to improve your shooting skills…LOL.
I can cycle the bolt in 1 second and be back on target.
Kind of like holding back pressure on the 12ga pump. It’s just reflex to chamber another round.
If you want a 7.62 caliber semi, just get an AR10 and be done. For that money you can get a stock AR10 with minute of scumbag accuracy.
Just an uninvited redneck opinion….

Since we have feral hogs on one of the places I deer hunt a BAR made a lot of sense. With a 1.5-5 Leupold it was more than adequate for the range I can see to shoot (SE timber country) but would allow me quicker 2nd or 3rd shots at moving hogs without having to relinquish my grip on the rifle. The first time I shot a hog I might have gotten a second one with a semi auto. I can’t run a bolt as fast as Tex.
The only con it had in my case, albeit a small one, was its weight. They’re a little heavier than a bolt gun but I wasn’t humping it for miles so that didn’t really matter.

A semi for hog hunting is a valid point, but I would still go AR10 for that capability. Long action semi autos can be a bit finicky vs the short action and the ballistics between the two (308/30,06) are very close especially under 400 yards. I would gander a guess than an AR10 is lighter than the BAR too??

The first question I should’ve asked is what roll are you wanting this gun to fill for you Nate?

Nate always does that. A squirrel probably ran by.

I completely understand that. For no good reason I started lusting after a Ruger No. 1 in 25-06 several years ago. My father-in-law located one at a store near him so I went to get it. I left with a bolt action 22 for my wife and to this day don’t have that No. 1

If you’re just wanting to add a semiauto 30-06 to the collection, why not pick up an M1 garand? They’re proven to be very effective in their given task
-
So heres what it is for me.
I do not want an m1 garand. I do not want to pay the price for an original one, and i do not want to buy somebody else's fark ups/failures/problems.
I understand that bolt action rifles are very accurate, i am just not a big fan of them. (Except for 1)
Given my background of growing up in rifle country northern WI, my service time, and my proven marksmanship skills. I am wanting a higher caliber rifle that is proven and reliable and able to fulfill a dual purpose role.
The only bolt action rifle i have ever truly wanted was an M24 sws. These were available a few years back as fully set up kits as they were issued to those that carried it. Unfortunately i was not in a position at that time to be able to acquire 1.
The second dual purpose high caliber rifle i am wanting and have first hand experience operating is the new M110 sass. There are full kits like mentioned above available with a very proud price tag that will take me awhile to acquire.
in the mean time, my stop gap that i am looking at is the aforementioned browning bar mk 3 in the subdued camo.
So in general, i was looking to see if anybody had firsthand knowledge that they can provide me with some pros and cons.

Nate, two options in my opinion , an older Rugar M77 and the Thompson Center Icon. I have both although the Icon is a 300 Win Mag. Both well built.
-
But, he wants a semi auto. M77 is a bolt gun.
and
BTW
I like that new M77 I just picked up.
-
Don, I certainly wasn’t knocking your new rifle, I just don’t have any experience with the newer ones.
-
Ok so you want a semi auto, but like the M110, and wanted an M24.
So why not build a AR10 in 308? If you look and browse smartly you can build one upper for a hunting set up, and one for more of a M110 style. However if you are dead set on acquiring a BAR in 30-06 then I'd go with it and just bring it home.

I didn't take it that way at all. And it appears as if my son has taken over the thing!
