Those things are silly, there a couple of kids at church that walk around with them constantly. My kids asked for one and I told them that if they have too much energy I'll find something productive for them to do.

My dad used to be a firefighting instructor for the state of Kentucky. I remember going on Tuesday evenings with him to different departments in the area and watching him teach. I remember the vehicle extrication classes the best, they were the most fun  for me as a kid. I remember belting into a busted up car while they cut it up around me, talk about fun.

So after I swapped the alternator in the van the other day I was still having issue s with hard starting and a couple times it would start then die immediately. Started thinking I might have a bad ignition switch. So drive it to the office today and came out and the starter wasn't spinning at all, just a series of loud clicks from the bendix. Sat there for a little while getting more and more frustrated. Checked battery studs(side post), whacked the starter, no change. Decided to check the battery cables again one more time and realized that the positive cable wasn't tight, but the stud was. Apparently when I bought the battery or when it was at the dealer last and they reinstalled it, the stud got crossthreaded and therefore seemed tight to the tech, but the actual cable was barely touching. I'm guessing with the warmer tempseratures( happened in the cold too) and with the battery being a little older now, it didnt have as much oomph and couldn't bridge the gap. Reconnected it properly and she runs like a top now.  Just reminds me I need to be more diligent with the basics when doing My diagnostics and preventive.

Swapped out the alternator on my Chevy express people hauler today. Not really a hard job, just getting around inside the engine compartment without much space is a pain.

Wife and I went and looked and what we believe and hope is to be our new family stimping grounds. It will give us quite a bit more room to move around with all the kids. I plan to put an offer down on it tomorrow or Monday at the lates since my wife went off to girls camp for a few days. The house is probably 4500 soft sitting on 63 acres with a big garage.  It's about 30 minutes further out, but it is what we need and have been looking for. It's going to need some updates and maybe some rearranging to get the rooms the way we want them to be.  Pray for us that things go well and that we can get our current home sold quickly and for a good price. Lots of moving parts.

I was going ot say spare drain plug but someone beat me to it. I would add that you want to make sure to have a float on your boat key. Kids like to play with things that make cars and boats go. Ask me how I know.

Took the family to church. Cooked up a couple pounds of dry black beans in the instant pot to go with tacos for dinner. Finished up a gallon of crock pot yogurt from yesterday. Put down the kids tents from Friday night that smstarted blowing around today after drying out. That's about it.

Regarding the EMP threat, it's one of the more realistic doomsday event scenarios. As much as I would prefer slow moving gurgling brain munching zombies, I don't that is in our future. If you haven't read the book One Second After by William Forstchen, you should pick up a copy at the library and check it out.  It is a very well thought out depiction in an EMP attack scenario or at least the results of it on every day people. When he published the book, he was called to speak before congress to describe the threat to them. Not that it did much good. Oh well I don't have much more to contribute at this point except read the book and buy more ammo.

Picked up a couple of topo maps of my property from the local planning and development office. They are 24x36 color images.  The property is a 55 acre parcel that is about 65% wooded, the rest in scrub/ semicleared.  One is a 10ft increment contour map printed over an aerial image of the property. The other is a 2ft increment contour map that looks like a normal topo map. These will be used to plan for a near future driveway construction and a mid future home/pole barn and whatever else I can get away with construction.

I wonder if you could use one of the eyefi cards in it. It's basicallly a SD memory card with short range wireless that can write to a laptop or other network drive. Then it would all be available on a device you could watch it on. Assuming said laptop survived a crash or whatever the dashcam recorded.

Sorry for the late reply. I don't have any specific plans except teaching the kids a little bit about computing electronics and programming. I had though of building. Amultizone heating system for the house with it and a few sensors and servos. But that will take a little more than I have available at this time.
I could donate this one to use for monitoring fuel efficiency on Square D, but does attempted idle of a stationary vehicle really equate to fuel economy?

« on: April 23, 2017, 10:08:31 PM »
So the raspberry pi is basically a microcomputer on a strict diet. I've attached a picture of the one I have(and haven't yet done anything with), the pi zero(that's a 308 round with it for comparison) The price of the pi zero is about $5. It is a1 Ghz single core CPU, 512 MB of memory, mini hdmi, micro USB power, micro USB connector for accessories/peripherals and a 40 pin GPIO(general purpose input output). So what can you do with it?  Basically anything you could do with a regular computer on a miniature scale. This is a great way to allow people to do their own electronics/ programming diy projects st a low cost. They can be purchased at low cost with basically everything you need to get started, or as just the main board like I have.  There are plenty of forums out there and step by steps to walk you through different projects until you get the hang of it on your own.
Here's a link to a page that talks about what it is abg getting started using it.

I've got one sitting in my bag that I haven't had the chance to tinker with yet, they were given out to attendees at CiscoLive (computer networking conference) last year. I have ideas about what I'd like to do, jut need the time and space. Unfortunately, eleven people in 1850 sq ft is a bit tight, but that's a different story.

« on: April 22, 2017, 10:54:57 PM »
We use coconut oil for quite s few things around the house, from cooking to cosmetics. Put a good spoonful in our stovetop popcorn popper instead of veggie oil, gives the popcorn a good fresh taste. If you do anything with essential oils, it is a real good carrier oil or for dilution. My wife uses it for cleaning off the war paint at night, cuts through all the crud and moisturizers st the same time.   We buy ours in bulk, by the gallon from A company called Soapers Choice.

Looks good Tex. What kind of fuel are you using in your tater guns?  I've always been partial to aquanet hair spray. A gas grill igniter will normally work pretty well for the ignition. You just need to make sure you don't get too high of a concentration of the hair spray or you don't get ignition. Just my experience. And if you haven't yet, try night shoots with a potato gun, watching the ignition flash through the combustion chamber and out the barrel in slow mo video is entertaining.

Thought this might be an interesting topic to see what everyone carries on a given day. More curiosity than anything else and it's a good way to get a feel for what works for different people.

I'll start, today I'm carrying a Ruger LCP in .380 with Hornsby Critical Defense rounds in it. Not the biggest i can grab, but the most convenient for in the pocket.

The range is clear, fire when ready.

Dave,
You're close enough that I'll show you my AR which has that ACOG mounted

The boys are using it today to "Hunt" Coyotes
Don,
That would be appreciated. I've seen them on guys rifles especially inAfghanistan, but being the scum sucking civilian contractor there was no chance (unless everything went truly pear shaped) that I would get to try them out. That does remind me though, the British flight lieutenant that we were deployed with was polling the three civilians that were with him about familiarity with firearms in case anything happened. The other two had no real experience, but when he got to me am I had to say was that I was from Kentucky. He stopped me right there and told mE that if anything happened I could use his pistol until something better was available. The other two he told to stay down.
Guess we have a reputation.

I would love to be able to go the Acog with RMR route, but that's almost an order of magnitude beyond what my wife would sign off on.  I'm thinking the Aimpoint is in my price range and if I need magnification, I could always get a swing away 3x. I managed to be a good buy at work for the past ten years so I got an anniversary bonus that I can convert to amazon dollars, I'm going to see if I can trust anyone on there.

Thanks for all the input, I haven't pulled the trigger so to speak, so if anyone has any additional info it would be appreciated.

Thanks!!

Oh, thanks for clarifying that these are for a tractor. I though they were for some mod on SquareD. The grapple would be handy for grabbing the back of a running truck for a not so fast getaway, like a redneck trailer hitch.

Thanks, I'm glad to answer any questions to clarify what I'm wanting.

Firearms / Optics for an AR
« on: March 09, 2017, 11:00:55 AM »
I'm thinking of spending a few dollars on new optics for my AR. I can shoot steel sights pretty well and have shot with a cheap red dot on it for a while, but I understand the benefits of a good optic. I am considering the Aimpoint PRO because they are fairly dumb proof and have a battery life of about three years if you believe the literature. I don't mind lesser known/smaller brands as long as they are proven.  I've looked at Trijicon but the price is quite a bit more.

Any thoughts on the subject would be appreciated or any experience good or bad with any particular optics.

Thanks inadvance and God bless

Dave

Yeah, our annual church chili cookoff usually has a couple of entries that just burn out your taste buds. I don't find it enjoyable to not taste anything after an initial solar flare in my mouth. I'll usually wait until everyone else has gone through the line and see which ones get the "I'm going to regret this in the morning but gotta look tough" reaction from some of the guys. I'll normally avoid or just take a small taste of them.

Righteous anger is the controlled response to an unrighteous situation. It is not emotional. When we let our emotions take over, or react, that's when we leave ourselves open to satan's influence. There is a pause that we can force into almost any situation that allows the spirit in and allows us to act in a controlled manner. That being said, its one of those things I can define and describe and say how it should work but have all sorts of problems following myself.  I thinks when we are protecting our children, we are able to call upon our Father in Heaven and receive the guidance needed to make the right choices, as long as we are willing to act as directed whether it meets what we think we is "fair" or not.

On a lighter note, here's what I always think of in regards to righteous anger:
