Author Topic: To spare tire or not to spare tire? (Read 1343 times)

So I’m at a cross road. I always buy a fifth tire and wheel. I rarely have ever used it, I typically buy good tires and drive reasonable. Trailers aren’t included in this discussion, if you don’t have at least one on your trailer you don’t use your trailer.

So on the fummins I have the 4 centerline 20x10” wheels getting sand blasted currently. Then off to paint to recoup an I owe you from a friend. I’m ordering cooper sst’s in 37 x 12.50 R20 which are 4 bills each, then I now need a fifth wheel which isn’t cheap. I carry a nice plug kit in truck and a compressor. Aside from cutting out a sidewall I don’t see the need for the spare really. What says the brain trust (that doesn’t include Dave, Ken or Sam who lives forty thousand miles from civilization).

0% for me but that’s totally geographic.

I’ve used plugs and a compressor every flat I’ve had other than one which took the entire tread and cut it from one bead to the other.

Based on buying good tires you’re likely 95.63742% ok 99% of the time.
That other tidbit is catastrophic.

Only hiccup will be finding something that fits if you’re in a bind.

Most of me says you’re good.

I think mostly depends on your use. If you load up family hook up an RV and head out of town probably be nice to have a spare along. Quicker to get back on the road.
Just you headed out , you can probably deal with problem.

So, now when the tire on the side of the truck blows, it will grenade and blow pieces into the spare, ruining that one too

I cut a sidewall once out of a duratrac, glass bottle freak accident maybe, it broke as I hit it with wheel and cut the side out of a duratrac 1/2 mile from home. I walked home and grabbed floor jack and tire. Rolled both to Jeep and swapped on spare. Think for time being I’m gunna chance it.

I just like being prepared for all contingencies. Having different wheels (aftermarket) on the dually that meant I couldn’t really carry a spare that would work in all locations made me nervous.

I have never needed my Glock 23 when leaving the house either, but I still bring it religiously,.

I know I’m not supposed to comment as my name is Dave…… but being Dave I’ll do what I want anyway regardless of what Shawn wants.

I have never had a flat tire anywhere but inside my garage in a personal truck.

Now in the equipment it has been very eye opening. I swear my dumptruck picked up ever sharp object and kills my tires

I’d say full size spare 100%

I’ll be looking for one for the new pickup

Like the other Dave, I don’t normally listen when people tell me what to do. I like having a full size spare. However, that could simply be situational for me, as I almost always have at least some of the kids and maybe my wife with me. Like was said earlier, easier and faster to get back on the road.

That would definitely give some extra insurance, I have a set of spoons already. Sidewall blow out would be about only thing aside from delam of tread or a wheel coming loose altogether.

The only time I carry a truck spare is on really long trips, and it's stock so it would have to go on the front and disable the traction control.

I saw a guy use a sock and a bottle of glue on a cut sidewall one time. It got him to town 20 miles away.

Plus an extra 37 takes up too much room imo.

I put 4 new Falken Wildpeaks at3w tires 285/75R18 at $350.@ 6 or 7 months ago and I've had 3 flats since.
Two of them were almost sidewall holes. No plugs there. Had to remove the tire and galvanize hot patch to fix.
The 3rd one was bizaar. Drove from Knoxville TN to Roanoke VA, walked around the truck and POW!!! The valve stem split open. 5 minutes earlier, I wast doing 80 mph.

So, yeah, you need a spare. Too bad it won't fit where the spare should be now.

Speaking of Ken’s gf, I spent night before last in downtown Little Rock at the Marriott on the river. The scene of Bill’s exposure of his junk to Paula Jones when it was the Excelsior hotel.

Drove past the Rose Law firm too, the original site of Hillary’s criminal enterprise.

Lived in LR from 93-98 and I still like the town. Drove by my first house the wife and I ever bought and took the kids down memory lane. They were not impressed.

Shawn, maybe a front bumper mount….makes it easier to push Priuses and Teslas out of the way without damaging them….

Not off topic, but on a tangent. What are you all using for air supply to pump these big tires back up on the side of the road if you have issues?

Most of the time dave, guys running air bags plumb a reservoir tank for purposes like that.

I just had a screw repaired on the tire that replaced the one I blew at the ridge.

I do carry a stock spare, but now carry a full size too, trailers for sure!

My 2 flats at the ridge were both total losses.

You saw my wife's grocery getter when we visited.... that spare wheel (Fuel) and 35" tire weren't cheap but....required
