General Maintenance, How to/DIY projects / Fire Extinguisher mount
« on: July 22, 2015, 05:20:39 PM »
So I saw this online and thought of SD and other builds and figured I would pass it along. This is a mount a guy sells but it would be easy enough to fabricate one. I like the quickness at which it could be deployed.

So here are the pieces:

The top "bracket" in this pic has two slots between the welds for a hose clamp which goes around the extinguisher. The slot on the left hand side of it rides on the pin in the bottom bracket. Then the push pin goes through the smaller holes and holds the extinguisher in place.

Here is a pic that shows it holding the extinguisher:

And here's what the "finished product" looks like:

Anyway....figured it was a pretty good idea that some could use.

Coffee Induced Early Morning Rant / Islam and Christianity
« on: July 17, 2015, 05:21:13 PM »
So for a long time I have been trying to learn about why Islam has so many suicide attacks on other religions. We all know (sadly) the roll call of attacks that stretch back over how many years (centuries! Look how/where Marines got their Leatherneck name!). So I have read a lot of the Koran and tried to see what is in that text that incites so many to do horrific things in the name of their religion. And sadly every time I mention some of the stuff that I have found (to Christians) I am met with the "Well Christians have the Old Testament with the 'eye for an eye'" kind of nonsense. So I want to rant about a few things I have learned.

Islam is the only religion I am aware of that actually codifies in its holy book (if you want to call it that) how to rape women, how to beat women, how to engage in polygamy, how to keep slaves, that Muslims should force non-believers to do one of three things: convert to Islam, die or pay a tax, how to lie and how to steal. All these things are done in the name of Islam.

For the nonsensical argument that the Old Testament has similar (but not as extreme) harsh things I always respond that I am not Jewish and what sets Christians apart is that we have the NEW TESTAMENT. I also try to ask....so you have one faith that is routinely doing exactly what its founder called for (Islam) and with that comes attacks, murders, suicide bombings, raping and all manner of horrific attacks on others. With the other religion, if its adherents followed the letter of rule by its founder (Jesus) we would see people "turning the other cheek", "treating our enemies as ourselves" and more. WHICH religion would be the one to inspire peace and tranquility throughout the world? Hint: It is NOT Islam.

Plus I am so f'n sick of politicians and others continue to perpetuate the LIE that Islam is the religion of peace. It is NOT a religion of peace. It is a religion of hate filled attacks on anyone who is a non-believer and sadly also attacks on others within its own religion. The Koran ultimately is a book of Hate Speech, politicians platitudes notwithstanding. The fact is the Christian Bible is just NOT a similar document. Reading through the list of what Muslim believers are asked to do is chilling in some ways because it really reveals the depths of hatred that Muslims must have to Christians if they are to believe. As Don stated in his post about all the anti-American Muslim organizations in the US: "Know your enemy."

In my wanderings I found a great website that not only provides contextual comment for the vile things that Islam asks its adherents to do. But it also keeps track of all Islamic attacks. Not only do they keep track of them, they provide the numbers of how many are wounded, how many are killed etc. It is quite literally chilling to realize how many of these attacks occur daily around the world that the press just never ever discusses.

Here are the numbers as of today:

# of attacks SINCE 9/11 (not the # of dead, or wounded, the number of ATTACKS!): 26,424 (yes....that is 5 a day....1908 a year....for (almost) 14 years straight!)

Weekly attacks (7/4 - 7/10):
Attacks: 65
Allah Akbars: 16 (suicide attacks)
Dead: 512
Critically Injured: 580

June 2015 monthly attacks
Jihad attacks: 262
Countries: 29
Allah Akbars: 48
Dead Bodies: 2426
Critically injured: 2582

I really recommend this website and use it a lot when someone tells me I need to learn about the peaceful religion of Islam.

Coffee Induced Early Morning Rant / Chattanooga Shooting
« on: July 16, 2015, 03:45:23 PM »
So everyone's probably heard about the shooting in Chattanooga by now. Frigging terrible....4 Marine's dead. And the gunman.

Pamela Gellar had some interesting news about this....seems an ISIS supporter tweeted 11 or so minutes before the shooting started and specifically referenced Chattanooga:

http://pamelageller.com/2015/07/4-marines-shot-dead-1-cop-down-in-multiple-terror-attacks-on-us-military-bases-in-chattanooga-isis-tweeted-warning.html/

And while I am glad that the US Attorney is seeing this as an act of "Domestic Terrorism" I won't be holding my breath for the WH to call it that. Hell they still won't call the Ft. Hood shooting terrorism or Islamic terrorism (I guess lots of people say Allahu Akbar when shooting soldiers  >:().

EDITED TO ADD: Okay.....so I am not sure exactly what to believe right now....I went to the twitter site of the ISIS a**hole and the tweet that Pamela Gellar references in her piece was made at 2:34 PM so it could have been after the shooting. Or they made one earlier (Pamela Gellar's piece says it was at 10:34 AM) and just deleted it. Who knows.

https://twitter.com/K_H_O7777777777/status/621734561228177408

Anyway....still a nasty thing no matter what. But I did want to point out that part of my earlier post may have been in error.

Coffee Induced Early Morning Rant / Kids and Sports
« on: July 16, 2015, 01:00:28 PM »
So this is a little take off from Don's CIEMR in Duramaxdarren's "Is it me" post. In it he made some excellent points about kids and introducing them to failure (and everything else he said about society!!!). But my comment is specific to kids and sports and the utter nonsense of "everyone gets a trophy" BS that infects sports (and apparently bible camp too!). I have three kids, they have all played sports at one level or another over the years (my youngest is just entering HS and continues to play soccer).

I think team sports can be really great for kids for a variety of reasons. I played hockey, baseball and soccer (hockey in college) so am familiar with the good and bad of team sports. Ultimately we all know the benefits to kids playing on a team, getting along, the "team" being bigger than the individual yada yada yada. But I think the REAL benefit of team sports is that it teaches kids how to lose! (Right along the lines of Don's point). I think as parents we all teach our kids how to win. We praise every little thing kids do from their first steps, their first words, etc. They color on the wall and we (often) say "oh what a nice drawing!"  ::)

but what a team sport can teach a kid (if we let it) is how to lose. How to dust yourself off after getting your ass beat on the field/rink/court and get back out there and try harder. If the other team worked harder, prepared better, they deserve to win. And we do no one any favors by pretending that the losing team is just as deserving of a trophy than the winning team. Does ANYONE remember who got the silver medals in the Olympics? Why was this latest World Cup so important to the women's team? Because they LOST in the finals in 2011 and hadn't made the finals since they won it in 1999. Did they feel good about having lost it in 2011? Um...I didn't hear any of them say that. And the losers didn't look all that happy about losing either. THAT'S LIFE DA** IT!

Life will kick you in the a** and if you have been coddled as a kid, told you are great no matter what, if you've never been challenged or had to work hard to get something then how will you possibly react when that job interview goes south? How will you react when that business deal you worked so hard on falls apart? Will you curl up in a ball and refuse to try again? Or will you say "Gee, the other guy/team/whatever worked harder than I did, they were better prepared and I da*n well better make sure that doesn't happen again!" THAT'S what team sports can teach kids. But only if we let them. If we coddle and give everyone a trophy, give everyone a medal and pretend that its all the same (don't keep score and other nonsense perpetuated by liberals who probably always got their butt's kicked on whatever field they played on!!!) then we will fulfill the liberals dream to lower the bar of achievement to the lowest common denominator. And in the REAL WORLD, that threshold is a dangerous place to be as people and as a country.

My son won a team championship in hockey where the prize was simply a medal. He values that cheap-*ss medal more than he does the tournament trophy he got for coming in second place in a tournament he played at. As he told me, "I knew we lost the tournament so the big trophy was pretty meaningless (exact same trophy as the winning team just a different plate on it saying "Runner Up"). But the medal meant we were the best that year."  I say give the winners their due and let the losers go back to the practice field knowing they lost to try to improve and do better next time. It will make ALL of them better. And it will make our society better.

Rant off.  ::)

Coffee Induced Early Morning Rant / Iran Deal
« on: July 14, 2015, 03:03:21 PM »
Can anyone tell me what is good about this deal for the US? I am being serious here. I have read a bunch on it, I see Iran cheering (first thing that concerns me), I have read Israel's response (another thing that SERIOUSLY concerns me). but what I can't find is anything that tells me what is GOOD for America in this deal. How does ANYONE believe that THIS TIME we can trust the Iranians? We haven't been able to since the ouster of the Shah but NOW they are playing straight with us. Really? Wanna buy a bridge?!!

My daughter texted me this AM and asked me about it and I said (in addition to the fact that I can't see what's good for the USA) it appears Obama is just scrambling to be able to say he has done something diplomatically. But I can't for the life of me get what benefit there is beyond the BS.

Can anyone help me? If I am missing something I would love to know.

Now this is a refreshing story (nice to see one that ends well when so many don't)....in so many ways. Lynn Russell, the former CNN anchor and her husband were on a trip in Albuquerque, NM when an armed robber forced his way into their room in an attempt to rob her. She gave her husband her purse in the process and he pulled out a gun and shot and killed the dirtbag, while getting shot 3 times himself. Fortunately he survived the shooting.

I like her comments afterwards to the news media about: the 2nd Amendment, what she says unequivocally about criminals having guns, an if you don't want to arm yourself then don't but stfu!

Oh, and lastly....her husband saved the citizens of NM (and who knows where else) the cost of housing this dirtbag as well as who knows what other societal costs over the next X number of years!

So with the global and domestic situation being what it is, I find I am revisiting books I had read before to try to reiterate lessons I know/should know better. And this book is one I think deserves a place in everyone's library for preparedness. This is a book that was written originally in 1935 when all the US was in a much more agriculture based system. And while my true plan involves about 50 acres or more of land, the author shows how you can make enough to sustain a family on 5 acres.

The other thing I like is that he covers so much more than just how to grow food. From water improvements to putting in septic systems and far far more. Moreover its $8 on Amazon. AND its a book that you will have on your shelf to refer to if the grid goes dark. I highly recommend it.

Faith Discussion / Amazing day at church
« on: June 29, 2015, 01:13:45 AM »
So my wife is dealing with some excruciating things with her parents. The minister used today's Gospel from Mark 5:21 and wove it into the sermon about controlling what you can control and giving up to God that which you can't.

So many times I find myself saying Sunday morning I just want to sleep and then I have an experience like this. So damn humbling. I leave renewed and feeling better. It always makes me wonder why I fight it. But I do all too often. I am weaker than I should be sad to say. But so glad I went today.  :-[

So Allen West has a very interesting take on the gay marriage ban ruling by SCOTUS. They used the 14th Amendment to say that some states can't ban something that is allowed as a "right" (I am setting aside how SCOTUS arrived at THAT logic as he is in his article).

But here's the interesting part- using this logic, and now potentially this PRECEDENCE, how can a state ban CCW or other gun laws that are more restrictive in some states but not others? Interesting read:

(I am not sure of the protocol here about C&P info from other websites so figured it was safer to provide the link)

Share Your Recipe / A coupla favorites
« on: June 26, 2015, 02:56:20 PM »
So being the FNG here I'm wandering around the forum looking at different stuff. And maybe cause its lunch time I wandered in here? Or am I just always hungry.  ::)

Anywho....I was raised in New England by Yankees so barbecue might as well have been something from Australia as far as I knew. (Oh and did I mention my Mom is a lousy cook? ha! Love her dearly...but cooking is not her strong suit!) Then as I got older I tried ribs....mmmmm.....oh buddy. Had to learn how to make those! Then brisket....fahgetaboutit! Had to do that. Then I moved on to pulled pork (I like to have both traditional BBQ sauce and traditional NC vinegar sauce...mmmm!). My son loved that so much I ended up doing 90 lbs of it for his HS grad party (along with home made brisket baked beans and slaw  ;)). THAT'LL keep ya busy! (especially on a small grille! yeesh).

Last weekend I made carnitas which (I only recently learned so sorry if all you guys already know about it) is a Mexican pulled pork sort of thing (albeit with completely different spices than traditional pulled pork BBQ). So I'll share this one as a recipe since its easy and tastes darn good. I made it with a grilled corn salad too and was a hit last Sunday Father's Day.

So start with a Boston Butt....I like that better than a picnic roast. Well primarily cause I'm lazy and don't like skinning the shoulder if I don't have to.  :-[ So I cut up the Boston butt into 1" "steaks" with one big chunk with the bone left in it. I layered the crock pot with cut up onions. The put the pork cuts on top. Tossed in cumin, cinnamon, salt and pepper (see? TOTALLY different spices than my regular pulled pork which is definitely a BBQ recipe and also is done with smoke on the grille). Added 2 bottles of lager (I would use any beer except light beer). I set it on slow an went to bed. Sunday AM I got up and it was fully cooked. I drained off the liquid (saving it), then shredded the pork. Added some liquid back.

Saturday when I did the pork I had also made fresh pico de gallo. Diced up about 10 plum tomatoes, about 5 or 6 Vidalia onions, 4 or 5 jalapenos, and added about a cup of chopped cilantro. Added equal parts vinegar (I used red cider but any will do), and extra virgin olive oil. Let that just sit until Sunday.

So Sunday I also made the grilled corn salad. For this I started by grilling the corn (corn grilled is just light years ahead of boiled/steamed). Also grilled some poblano peppers. Let the corn cool a bit before cutting the kernels off the corn. Pulled the blackened blistered skin off the poblanos and chopped them up. Made a mix of olive oil, lime juice, and some salt. Poured that over the corn and poblanos. Then cut up some avocados, red onion (small slices) and chopped cilantro. Then mixed all together (don't mix it too hard you don't want to beat up the avocados too much). This is just amazing.

Now where were we....oh yeah... the pork.  :P So back to the grille.....added more charcoal....let that get ripping hot. Took my trusty cast iron made in China  ::) camping griddle....threw it on the grille and started adding the shredded pork. It sizzled and smoked putting a nice crust on the pork. Turned it a few times. Took some off....added more....kept at it till I had cooked it all up that way and it was all nicely crusted and hot.

Now the tortillas....corn tortillas....a little oil on the grille....toss them on....give them a minute or so (I honestly forget how long...30 seconds when the grille is crazy hot? more if its just warm)...flip them and do the other side...the point is you want to heat them nicely and have a little brown on 'em but ultimately warm not crispy. They still need to be soft enough to make tacos with them.

Oh yeah....forgot the creama (I prefer this so I can drizzle it over the tacos instead of big clumps of sour cream)....couldn't find any creama around here so I mixed sour cream and heavy cream and a touch of sugar. Let it set until it flowed together nicely and was "soupy" like. (Sorry that's a technical term donchaknow?! ha!)

So now all comes to the table....grab a tortilla, add the carnitas, some pico, drizzle the creama....a side of grilled corn salad. Mmmm. Good eating!  :)

Site Rules & Introductions / Howdy from Taxachusetts
« on: June 25, 2015, 06:56:20 PM »
So it appears I am a new member. I registered yesterday and then today (while waiting for the "approval" email) I figured I would try to log in and haha it worked!  :) Well....I think so anyway...we'll see if this actually posts when I try!

So I'm a married father of 3 kids ages 14-21. Living in the bleep-hole of Massachusetts (I was raised here...moved out west and then fell in love with a great Italian woman from here who wouldn't leave being near her family so back I am). I like to fish, hike, anything at all to do with the outdoors. Proud (vehemently proud) 2A supporter (which as you can guess is not easy in MA  >:( ) Conservative Christian (very active in our local church- former treasurer, finance committee member, etc. My wife helped found our church's food pantry which now (dare I say because of this wonderful economy we have???!!!) has 200 families getting help (and our little town only has 9000 people in it!!). I work in financial services and when I read Don's intro about how he started this website I knew I had to try to join. I used to work in Tower 2 in NYC before the 1st WTC attack. So that day has special meaning for me as well.

I have owned lots of vehicles almost all 4WD's....76 FJ40, 80 Chevy K10 SWB, 82 GMC K2500 4" lift, 92 GMC Jimmy, 03 GMC Yukon (as well as a BMW 540 and a few VW Jettas thrown in the mix). I do as much of my own maintenance as I dare (rebuilt the engine of the FJ in my driveway, did the clutch in the K2500 in a buddy's driveway in 10 degree weather, yada yada yada) an drive vehicles until the scrap guy makes me an offer I can't refuse (the Yukon has 240K miles, the BMW 225K). I keep vehicles mostly stock (so far!) and put more time and effort into camping gear etc. Don't do as much hardcore rockcrawling sticking mostly to logging roads and the like. So I doubt I will have much technical knowledge to add here to some of the builds I see- you guys are light years away from my skillset!  :o

Hoping to do a small build of a new (new to me?) 3500HD Duramax in the next year...finances and God willing. The threads I have read here (I found my way here by following Don over from one of his old posts on ExpoPortal) are really great. So much more in depth and really providing the drill down on so many different parts of a build. Plus I like that there seems to be much more full sized focus as well as much more similar beliefs than in many other areas of the interwebs.  ;) I'll shut up now!
