I've done the cold weather stuff a few times. No ride though, it was on SF Bay about the same temp with dry suits on a semi rigid.

Day one of live fire training.
For those that aren't aware I'm one of our three instructors left up north right now.

Some shots of the group and burn house.

Set up for the rookie roast.

We get in and comfy and light the fire. Go all the way to rollover, then right and wrong attacks.

And we used a ton of air, 35 4500#, and 12 2216's

I just don't want to wind up missing a digit or limb.  I can sometimes get in a hurry to get results.

You may call it a "rookie roast", but the very import training you are doing, will for sure save a life.

The roast is very important. Until that shield gets a little curl it just screams rookie!
Seriously though, I'm sure firefighting is a whole different ballgame where y'all are. I imagine there's a lot of things we down here don't appreciate as much as we should.

Was probably a blast, hot or not. Our training never got that bad, just little fires for those who never really used an extinguisher.

You should try OC (mace) and taser training,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

Got the siding back on the house on Saturday. Finished up right in time because it started raining.

Tonight I got the 3rd window done. Luckily no dryrot behind this one!

One more window to go and then two belly bands and the garage door trim.

The crew had a blast. We got it fairly hot a couple times.
The PC crowd call it the 'Orientation burn'. I'm old school and not PC anything.

There were guys that had come several times, and commented on how much more they got out of yesterday. This year our shutdowns interfered with the normal burn house, so we were not with our fire protection services crew this time. Myself and one other lead instructor are in the books with the fire college for this one, so it's our show. We went hot and hard all day and the crew loved it.

Today's plan is evaluation based scenarios, car fires, and search and entanglements.
Should be another good day.

So we had another great day at the fire college.
I had the vehicle fire stand, and we burnt and reburnt this poor truck all morning.
I want to add that we try to work with our firefighters not with our backs.

Here are two of them stoking the fire for me.

And burning well enough again for another run through.

We had 15 students, and I'm thinking we ran this about ten times over this morning.

Some of them 'went out' last night, and judging obvious condition, they were tasked to open the doors. Anyone that's tried to break open vehicle doors knows the PITA that it is.
The passenger door took five members of the first two teams to open.
The drivers door was left to the end, and all five took their turn as the fire was all but out.
They each in turn ran out of air...
We finished the overhaul, and then I popped the door in about ten seconds.
I've had vehicle extrication training, which none of them had.
They had the door ready to pop at member two, but this team was in the 'best' condition, so they got to work their guts out.
After tear down I took the whole group out to show them a few tricks.
Took a little flack from a couple deserving victims, and all was good.

This was the first time in my 17 years of coming, that no one got 'sick' or was MIA in the morning.
So it was cudos to them for touching it out.

All in all it was two days very well spent, and showed that our training program is working really well.
We did get a little carried away with a few of the evolutions, and they ran with it and did it well.
I just don't want to wind up missing a digit or limb.  I can sometimes get in a hurry to get results.

Sam when I saw that first string of pics I thought the van was set up for a giant BLEVE drill!  then I re-read it and realized that was your air. *phew*

I missed a lot in a week or so. You guys been busy! Things are starting to settle down for us a little. But with that now comes more mourning for the wife. In some ways planning the funeral was easier as it kept her so busy and distracted. Now some downtime has her focusing on the loss.

Preparing for a Garage Sale over the next 3 days, or until most of the stuff is gone!  Finally got tired of sweating my backside off and closed the insulated garage doors and opened the door to the house!  AC in the Garage!  Now I can arrange and price stuff in comfort!  Yesterday, tried to cut-off my trigger finger while trimming the lilac bush; I guess I should watch what thick thing I'm whacking with the hand pruner! My dad used to be a firefighting instructor for the state of Kentucky. I remember going on Tuesday evenings with him to different departments in the area and watching him teach. I remember the vehicle extrication classes the best, they were the most fun  for me as a kid. I remember belting into a busted up car while they cut it up around me, talk about fun.

JR, Photobucket most likely changed to not allow viewing if someone is using an Ad Blocker add in to their browser. I have Firefox and most likely got the same message. You can go into your Defender and white list or allow the photobucket domain. Something like this.

We had a pretty good storm roll through the area Monday evening.  I lucked out and didn't have much damage to any structure.  A few shingles got torn off but that was it.  We did have several trees blown over.  This was the big one that came down.  It is a little over 4' across at the base.  I started on it with my saw last night then had some help from a neighbor.  He burns wood and was looking for more firewood.  I used his stihl 066 with a 48" bar I think to cut up the trunk and bigger branches while I used is 038 with a 18" bar to cut everything else up.  This was a about 1-1/2 hours of cutting last night.  At some point he will come with a skidsteer and dump-truck to pick the logs up.  The 48" bar wasn't able to get all the way through the trunk of the tree.

He plans on coming back tonight to clean-up a few of the smaller trees that came down.  A couple of those are still 18" - 24" across so should net some decent fire wood for him.

The house sits on 63.6 acres, so enough to lose the kids for a little while at least. Not to mention being able to lose myself when I need to.

Our God-daughter graduated last night. Same school Sam graduated from, they have 4 different focus programs and separate entities operating as a single school, pretty cool actually. Her focus was Bio-med, and Longball, she's going to be a trauma nurse. Hard to believe she was Sophie's age when we met her family.

The angle of the pic makes it look closer than it actually was.  Atleast 10 ft from the nearest branches to the house.  In the second pic you can see my overhead service line coming in.  I think that the end of some branches must have caught on that.  I can see an area where the wires aren't wrapped the same as they are on the rest of the line.

Went and got my new glasses today. Then I checked on the peterbuilt in the shop. AC quit and there are a couple other minor issues so i took it in to a local mechanic Monday. Told them to do a service and check everything out. I do my own servicing but it dont hurt to have a fresh pair of eyes on it. They found a hole in the rear end. I don't know how I missed it and the mechanic said he has never seen that happen before. So, the AC compressor is shot, I get new air filters, I was going to replace them anyway. They we're put in 600,000 miles ago. 5th wheel jaws need rebuilt. One battery took a crap. Free replacement under warranty from Napa, I need a new (used) rear end housing.

On the way home I stopped at at dollar General and got a pool for my deck ducks. I took them out of the brooder a few weeks ago so they would get use to outside. The little buggers got under the deck and I couldent catch them so I left them be. They don't hurt anything and there are only 3. I will put them in with rest later when they get bigger. They are so skittish you can only watch them through the window and only if you are very quiet.

The offer we made on our new home in Williamstown was accepted!!!  Now begins the saga of selling the current house, as well as our other property and moving the clan.

Also, had to take the boys to the last day of cub camp today so I took the top off the K5 so they could have a fun ride in.

A friend of mine had a bunch of storm damage last night. I got one of my kids and another friend to go to what we could. Got rid of what widow makers we could and cut stuff up into more manageable pieces. We were not prepaired. I need a payloader and few trucks. We are leaving for Kentucky in the morning so I reached out to some other mutual friends so see if they can help. The guy lost both legs but was till working his butt off. He was riding around on a mower dragging branches one at a time.

Spent an hour or so climing a tree to install a yagi antenna for a cell phone booster/repeater trying to get a better signal for my cell phone at the hide/weekend place.  After climing the tree I had to add an extension cable and the extra length reduced the signal worse than leaving it lower to the ground.  Back up the tree to remove it and now mounted on the eave of the house on the gable end.  Have some more work to do to route cables and run them into the house.  All this in near 100 degree heat...and high humidy....ugh
