The Reclamation of Blue
« on: May 19, 2017, 11:20:20 PM »
Blue is a 1987 Chevy C10. 350 tbi 400 turbo.  She belonged to my dad first and then me. When I was 18 I took my eldest boy (the one in the pics) home from the hospital in it and restored it in the barn shortly thereafter. Was around 2000.

I tell you what! Tearing her down today was like opening a time capsule for me. I couldn't help but reminisce the entire time. Not sure I'm going to be able to get through this without shedding a few tears along the way.

Plans are constantly changing. I know she's going to be a work kit truck so we will keep that in mind! I don't want to pour gobs of cash into it just yet because, well it belongs to a teenager and that is asking for trouble and heartaches. I know it's going to be just perfect when she's done. I'm kicking around the idea of doing a sort of faux petina on her to match the real petina and then preserving it with some satin clear.

Without further ado here is day 1. Forgive the lack of technical pictures here. I don't want to spend the whole build behind my camera lens. For the most part the pictures will just tell our story along the way! Trackin'?

Here we are yanking her out of the weed, past the chicken coop and into the garage!

I know you're probably thinking "she looks pretty good to me!" If you are, you're missing the point of the build! This is the summer before his senior year! It's our last shot to do something before he blows off to lands far and wide! He's already talking pipelines and underwater welding or even the Navy, heaven forbid.

Peeling off the old trim... by golly I stuck that on there good!

Some grease monkey pornography!

The make a wish kid even jumped in to help turn some screws out! (Y'all take a moment to lift him up. He had his scan this week and they located a spot on his lower spine that wasn't there before. I'm not ready to worry but it's definitely worrisome. We go back to the STL in five weeks for more scans, testing and a spinal tap)

He kind of likes the view from down there.

This is where I'm ready to shut it down for the night but I can't get him out of the truck

Take a second look at that steering wheel! That steering wheel is out of my great grandpas 1986 Chevy S10 Blazer. He died long before Stet was born. He was a great man and my first father figure.

Well this is going to be awesome. Great to see a truck like this passed down, and watch your son make it his own....even if it is just fine as is!

I'm really envious of you guys out west where you can park a truck for years in a field and then drag it out and have something serviceable. Around here you'd have a pile of rust is all. VerY cool to pass that to a youngster. I'll be watching this for sure!   :likebutton:

Well i last drove it in 2007. It sat at the ex wife's house for four years with her refusing to let me take it. It didn't run. She filled it with trash and crap. Then when she was evicted, she abandoned it and I retrieved it. It sat at my old house until 2013 when I moved it to the farm. It's been sitting at the farm in the weeds since then. It's ready for some TLC.

A lot of nothing really happened yesterday. We dropped the tanks. Here Stetcyn is asking, "how much is this going to cost"? That tank had various parts of the fuel sending unit floating around inside of it along with a crap ton of rust! I love the sweet smell of varnished gasoline!

Rock Auto gon love me!

That is how I imagine the tank on the mustang to look.
That is nasty. Truck looks awesome Blaine, and this time with the boy will be looked back on by him for many years to come.

I replaced the fuel tank in my 55 T-bird for around 150.00 including new straps to hold it in place. Well that was a few years ago but still, not too bad.

185$ for the tank and pump unit and straps! What a deal!

At least it's not another one of those ugly dodges! (I'm prepared for all the hate that will follow)

Seriously tho, IMHO, 87 was the best year for chevy. The older body style with a TBI engine. We would pull one up next to a late 80's ford and just shake our heads at the simplicity of the chevy injection compared to ford...and also how much better they ran...and better mileage to boot!
Nice truck Blaine, very nice.

Build day 3-

Hasn't been much updating on ol blue lately bc my boy is back home in Texas visiting his grandpa for a couple of weeks.

However this is the time of year for me I don't sleep much so I found myself in the garage making up with her after all these years she's been neglected. I only took a few pics along the way. First off my goal 1 was to get her moving in and out of the garage under her own power again so I could put Tina in out of the thunder boomers.

I put the new tank together and stabbed the sending unit in her and put her back home. The passengers side isnt near as bad as the drivers side. Just the way the lines are laid out. While under there I put in a new fuel filter, and a tank switch valve. Those notoriously go out at the worst times and get stuck between both tanks. I used to keep a couple nipples in the tool box to bypass it when it smoked.

Then I put the new sending unit in the drivers side tank and slammed her home. I installed a new fuel pump relay and hit the key and I heard that beautiful pump whirrrrrrr. So I had to pour some gas in her and see if she'd run. I took a video and sent it to my boy. She ran! Boy she sounded good!

Build Day 4

Last night I worked on cleaning up the wheel wells a little. I devoted one can of rustoleam undercoating and one can of same brand rusty metal primer to each hole. I took all four brake units apart and greased them up good. I changed the three rubber hoses, 1 in the rear and two up front. FYI if you are in need of brake lines, Rock Auto has some on close out. Got all three lines for like six bucks  total!

Here's a before and after of the rear wheel well. Also put new Monroe shocks all the way aroundsie and hacked off the rusty crooked tail pipes.

Build Day 5-
Tonight I focused on a shotgun of items. I finished up the wheel well beautification project and installed a new Pitman and Idler arm. Those suckers weren't messing around. I have two different sized pullers. I basically just beat them into submission.
My puller was only useful on the pitman. I need a ball joint separator tool in my arsenal I guess. After getting the new parts installed I greased the front end up good and thoroughly.

Then I bled the brakes out. Ill tell you guys something. I'm never asking for help bleeding brakes again. I used the same method I used on Tina. I put a brake fluid bottle north of the bleeder and ran a hose from the bleeder in to the bottle then pump the brakes about twenty times each. I started with the passenger rear, then driver rear, passenger front, driver front. I kept the reservoir topped off and one time around and she was good to go! Even after all the line swapping.

Then I let her run for a few minutes to get her good and warm. She maintained around 45 psi in oil pressure and stayed around 190 on the temp. I changed the oil and filter and then put the wheels and tires on.

I was torn between spending money on some nice rally's with some good street/strip looking tires. I always ran 31x10.50's on her. They are just functional and look good as far as I am concerned. I decided this is a work truck and we would go with 31's again! I found a set of BGF rugged terrains on Craigslist for a couple hondos. They look to be about 85-90% tread and were evenly not worn-

So what did I do next you ask? At 4:00 this morning? Why yes I did take her for a spin! But I didn't have a seat. I quickly installed a type 1- 3.5

I always wanted bucket seats!

I forgot how much power this old girl has! And let me tell you. She's not running very good either! She needs a tune up. But dad gum she's fast and shifted through that 400 turbo barking the tires every time!

So I had to put her up before the neighbors on the other side of the mile section called me to find out who was racing around.

Here's a couple vanity shots to close!

I remember that fuel tank valve on mine that I had. They did have a habit of going out so I would always fill both tanks and then run off of the secondary tank and if the valve went out you still had the other. Still a pain. It did come in handy one time out on the back dirt roads when I "pretended" to run out of gas with the GF along.. She thought we were stranded out in the middle of no where. LOL not too happy when I flipped the switch and fired it up. The old reliable 350.

You are breathing back years of life back into it. Nice!

Those wheels look good on there. I would dump that electrick tank switch though. I put a manual in my 77 and never had an issue.

There was a local "haunted" bridge that went over a railroad tracks. Rumor was that if you shut your car off while parked on it then it wouldn't start back up.

In reality the rumor was just that & it was on a desolate back road and kids would park on it and well you get the idea. I had a late 80's Camaro with the 5spd in it and the clutch. As with most manuals if you didn't have the clutch pushed in it wouldn't turn over. Fun memories of tricking a 110# half naked blonde girl into trying to push start my Camaro......

Ok ok... file this under $#*+ you'll would never believe...

So I have been missing my 19mm  impact swivel socket for going on 17-18 years now.... well some knuckle head left the dad gum thing sitting on the frame rail after he put the bed back on about the same number of years ago!!!!!!!!!!

What an idiot!

I did that to a nine mill not to long ago and found it when I rebuilt the front of the truck suspension
