Few hours out from destination, letting a buddy drive and getting emails and things answered... figured throw a quick update!

Running good, loosing some coolant and oil. Hard to tell where on coolant as it’s slung everywhere. Not enough to be show stopper just annoying and making a mess. When hot she she starts right up but dies right a way a couple times before staying lit.... maybe not getting the solenoid pulled up all the way at first but has a brand new solenoid on it so maybe a juice issue. Literally threw a new FSS on it yesterday morning before pulling out. Next time going to watch solenoid while buddy starts.

Mileage is extremely sub par..... 12-13 but also may have to do with these 80mph speed limits. She’ll run as fast as you dare but spinning some RPMs at 85.

The leaks are driving me nuts. The gasket job the shop did on her is really hurting my feelings right now.....  should of done myself!  :knucklehead:

Long time, no update. Got her close to buttoned up, still sorting out a few kinks. Dragged the trailer to a match about 4 hours away and she did well, found a few things to address but nothing major. Fixing to head out for 17 hour trip across country to Utah in the morning with her, won't be pulling anything so should just be loping along. Throwing on a new FSS as soon as it gets here today, been dying if you hit a bump just right . Really the only thing I could think it would be, not much else to it. Any other ideas feel free to chime in!

Trip will consist of my wife along with a buddy and his, hoping for smooth sailing! Might have some marital disharmony if it turns into too much of an adventure. Lots of gravel ranch roads once we get up there, match is on a large private (250,000 acre) ranch so looking forward to taking in some big country that our good Father created for us. Been there once before and it is amazing.

Below is probably about how she will sit for the time being aside from adding a rear bumper. Bought a ranch hand but would need to modify to work, not sure what direction I will go. Oh, and running boards.... kinda have to climb in at the moment. I remember a time I thought running boards were dorky........ Front springs are factory X springs and rear is stock plus airbags but she sits on up there.

Phew, pretty crazy couple months. A lot going on, interesting time we are living in.

On the build: it continued to morph and lessons continue to be learned. Received the body back from the body shop and it was unusable. Long story, after meeting with body guy he agreed it was not correct. There were a lot of corners cut and honestly he just got in over his head on it. Welded on cab was not lined up, huge gaps on windows, panel bonding everywhere and more. Lost the money that was prepaid for parts and material and now have one expensive deer blind shell.

So in comes a third Excursion. I think the word is out now that some dude from Oklahoma is buying up the world's supply of Ford Excursions. At least that is how it feels to me.....

Found a V10 one out of Dallas that the owners niece had blown a coolant hose on and drove until it stopped. By the third one I am getting pretty good at picking them  . Very clean, no rust, really what I should have started with.....

Picked up the rest of the pieces from the shop they were at - a 10,000 piece puzzle that was pulled apart hastily by someone else.

And then started how I should of started (if I should of started) from the get go. Best friend and I commenced to do the swap on the back pad of the shop. Yanked out the V10 and stuck in the 12V. Toughest part was not having taken apart the original one the 12V was in it was difficult figuring out how it went back.

She runs pretty good, pulls like a freight train. Surprising power, honestly pulls like a tuned 6.7 my buddy has. The PDD AFC live control has been dyno tested to take a stock truck to over 900 ft -lbs with just the controller so I would assume we are a good ways past that with the other mods.  Need to figure out some stuff with TPS and / PCS transmission controller, doesn't want to hold gears. Pulls hard but shifts way too soon, once your 60+ she pulls hard for as long as you want. Waiting on communication cable from PCS to check out further on tranny.

HOWEVER, she is leaking oil like a stuck pig. The shop that had the motor was supposedly re-gasketed everything but she is leaking from several locations, one of which being the rear main  Highly frustrating, would have take a couple hours to re gasket it myself when it was out. My assumption is they did not have the correct tool to press in the rear main. May have to re-pull the motor to address. Not sure why leaking at other areas. Painful.

Need to install new front springs and shocks all the way around to handle the new weight. Lifted a safe wrong the other day and really tore up my back so might be a minute before I can do that. Once those are on I will put new tires and wheels on. Picture below is obviously just the new wheels and rubber rolled next to it to get an idea of final looks (albeit she will be a bit higher.) Also have a rear ranch hand I need to modify the brackets on to work.

And that where we are at for the moment. Kids love riding in it, just yell "show me the power!" the whole time.

Baha, looks like the consensus is Ken is the man for the bumper..... now I just need someone to help me lift into the truck bed.....

It is a-going. At this point I have taken the original budget and doused it in gasoline and lit it. Becoming more painful. I am not a body guy and the guy who is gets to take all my money on this one. I. Hate. Rust. I officially own 2.5 Excursions now to make one good one. Cutting out and replacing bad spots, will take recommendations on what you all use to "neutralize" and coat the lighter stuff. Brother-in-law works for a pipeline company and has some stuff they used to coat underground pipe with that I may liberally use underneath. I have use POR15 in the past but just haven't been thrilled with it.

Engine is getting buttoned back together. Mods on it are:

PPump:
Power Driven Diesel AFC Live (in cab fueling setup)
Higher flowing delivery valves
3k governor springs (debating on dropping 4K in but not sure - opinions?)
Extended rack travel cap

Engine:
60# intake and exhaust spring
Timing bump from 12.5* to 18* (supposed to be happy medium for power and mileage)
Injectors - need to see what is in it. I have
Turbo:
Has Holset HE351 on it, was blowing oil past the seals so dropping in new cartridge with billet wheel
PDD Hot Rod Modified Cummins Lift Pump - mechanical but should be able to push needed PSI even if FASS goes down.

Suspension/Wheels/Tires

Has a 4 link coil over setup in the front
1 ton rear end with bags
Went with Rancho XS9000XL Adjustable Shocks - maybe take a leaf out of rear for ride since we have bags and can adjust shocks? Not sure yet.
34" Nitto Terra Grapplers G2s - needed to fit in garage so had to be conservative here
Pro Comp Series 69 Alloy Wheels
Replaced pretty much everything that moves in a circular motion.

Interior:

Bringing everything over from the black one
Installing sound deadening
Installing a Ford Dash Kit for cleanly mounting all the necessary switches for all the go go gadgets I will want

Exterior:

Shifting from wrap to thinking I want to professionally line x it for the long haul. Any thoughts on this?

Build Threads / Excursion Cummins Build for the Mrs.

New thread for the Excursion build.... still thinking of name but she will speak to us I am sure.

Warning: I have read and benefited much from some of the build threads on here that are highly detailed and documented. This unfortunately will not be one of them as it will be a pretty darn fast build as the deadline is early March for a camping trip to Moab. As mentioned in previous thread - this will either go good or poorly for marital harmony, not a whole lot of room in-between. The results will be tested on a 28 hour round trip in 5 weeks.

Goal of project is to build a family friendly towing rig to take across country to different events we attend throughout the year.

Purchased two Excursion for the project. The first is a 2000 with a 94/95 160hp P-Pump 12V already installed. This one has all the right parts but has not been treated kindly. Ran strong, probably has some pump work done as well as injectors and a HX40 turbo. Tough to know exactly as the guy I bought her from was not the one that originally built her.

Second one was a "clean" gasser with a 198K on the clock. Turned out to be much less "clean" than I had thought once we dug in. Mechanically sound and has clean history but had some used car lot tricks underneath to cover up a bunch of rust on the body. Had to drive a few hours to pick it up and looked it over at dusk with a flashlight, lesson learned.   :knucklehead: Bright side is it still had more in usable parts on her for the build than what I paid. Just a bummer as it made the project much tougher than swapping power train into this one.

Pulled them both in, evaluated and determined a game plan.

- Red one's body is actually in better shape, going to require rust repair but manageable with using combination of doors and parts between the two. Will have to find cab corners, have them coming from out of state.

-Full mechanical shakedown on Red.
Going through all suspension, brakes drive line and replacing what is needed. Which is most of it - wheel bearings, rotors/pads/calipers, lines, shocks, ect ect.
Pulling motor and transmission for inspection and re -gasketing. Advancing the timing while out along with installing 60lb valve spring.
P Pump is getting bigger delivery valves, higher governor springs, AFC Live in cab fuel control and a higher performance lift pump to hopefully push the needed fuel pressure. Couple other tweaks on pump.

Whoever gave the previous owner green paint needs to be arrested. Just my opinion...... Will be getting painted gunmetal gray.

Doing a full interior swap over from the black one so red's interior had to go!

Have done all the suspension/brakes/hubs/wheel bearings with the exception of shocks, those haven't arrived yet. Took red to body shop to get some rust repaired along with prep for wrap. Going to try a wrap on it and see what we think. This is the color the Mrs. would like it wrapped. Also sold the current wheels and bought some matte black simple 17" pro comps to go back on.

Will be tearing apart motor and trans tomorrow. Hope to find all good news! Would be refreshing, have found some surprises to be sure!

Oh, and yes, I got upgraded tow mirrors.

Been out of town for the last bit but getting back after it. Will start new thread soon (I hope)

don’t know how i missed this but i hate i did. a friend of mine is selling a ppump ex that he ‘11-‘16 front end swapped as well. driven it for 5 years. it’s a cool truck. but glad to see you have the parts already! and as sean said.. upgrade those tow mirrors!

If it is still for sale I would be interested in talking with him!

So you're going to strip the nice one and transfer to the hammered one? Hope you don't regret that decision bud. Either way, looking forward to the outcome.
Edit: nevermind. I'm having a problem with reading comprehension lately.

Happens to the best of us! Nope, swapping the good stuff over to the black one! Getting the build sheet together on it and should be pulling them both in to the shop next week and starting tear down. Have to run to SHOT Show in Vegas for a few days but should be getting after it pretty heavy after next week.

Do you guys want me to start a new build thread or should I just continue this one? Not sure if I can change the title or not?

El Tate (works for Randy’s ring and pinion) has rebuild kits for the clutches in those carriers. They are wearable parts.

check the rear diff tag. 3L73105 means you have the limited slip he's talking about. 3 73 105 means you don't

Thank you sir!

That’s really not that much different In the final pocketbook when you look at a years travel,  maybe a grand or two to jump from a Cummins for what maybe 16 mpg better.

Ha ha arguing to leave it stock. Sorry

Totally understand, the thought did cross my mind.... very briefly but it did. This one was averaging 8.9MPG unloaded for me on the onboard calculator (which typically are off a decent amount and when your dealing with single digits that percentage could be high!)

We have a gentlemen that will buy the V10 motor and trans for at least half what I have in the black one. Also probably buy the axles and other parts I do not use, he runs a bunch of V10 F250s on his farm and always needs parts. Hopefully I get most of what I have in the black one out with keeping what I actually want and swapping over the good stuff from big red.

I am just a big fan of the 12v motors. Makes me all warm and fuzzy feeling inside thinking about a clean Excursion with a p-pump 12v in it.

That one looks less abused than the red one for sure.
Didn't happen to come from Colorado by chance?

No, it came out of Arkansas. It belonged to the owner of a salvage yard that recently passed. Story is it was just his hunting trip rig. Very straight, drove it 2 hours to the shop last night at 70 on the highway and did great. Really nice interior and actually the only vehicle I have now with hands free calling and Bluetooth!

Negative, mines white but it might be easier to swap all the good parts from red one into that nice looking black one....

Check door codes, one may have limited slip rear carrier and one may not....

Do you know the code offhand that denotes this?

You know, I've been looking at the 90's Suburbans with the 454's. Seem like the southern and western vehicles are holding up, and that 454, although a gas hog, is a good puller. The insides of those aren't all that changed on the succeeding two generations.

Love the 90's Burbs, had a 91' in the family for years. Would be a tough sell to the Mrs!

Well that escalated quickly.

That is probably what my wife is saying.... picked up a super clean gasser last night for much less than the parts I needed to make the other one clean. Will start a build thread of the Excursion sammich..... straight and fast gents, straight and fast.

Red one bumper is available for those mad max fans.....

So maybe a dumb question, what’s wrong with a crew cab diesel? I have a family of 5, 3 girls the wife and I. My wife drove a crew cab diesel srw for years and we took it on family trips as well. Don’t get me wrong the excursion seating 8 is great but I’ve come to the conclusion it’s not ideal for a number of reasons.

Not a dumb question, perfectly valid! For us we have three kids right now but we believe that God is the best family planner so if He chooses to bless us with another/s we would outside the crew cab quickly. I do not want to put a bunch of time/money in something that I have to sell when she tells me another one is on the way! Plus my wife really likes having a suburban sized vehicle - happy wife happier life!

Since I put the cover on my truck bed we take it on more family vacations/ road trips then we do my wife's vehicle.  It is just a lot easier to toss everything in the bed of the truck vs pack it in the back of her SUV.  Her fuel economy isn't that much better, plus it is more comfortable for me to drive all day.  We only have 2 kids so that does make it a little easier on seating for us.

Agreed, I have a camper on my truck and will soon have a custom fabbed ambulance doored rifle storage, shooting platform, get in and hide from the Oklahoma tornado steel camper on it (joking on the tornado part but it will be heavy!) and it is super convenient to throw everything back there. Kiddo number is what dictates the three rows.

Anyhow the trailer did not come back empty last night. After posting one our the guys that works with me showed me a P-Pump 12V swapped Excursion a couple hours away. Went and checked her out and picked her up. A little difference approach than I was planning but hope it works out as well. I am looking at it kinda like an Eleanor. Mechanically she is pretty solid and whoever did the swap did a pretty good job initially, also has the front end swapped to later model 4 link. It has 70K on the swap so we know it works. Bad part is she has been driven and used hard the last year by a guy that bought her, was supposed to make payments to the owner and then made a couple and stopped. So I guess he literally drove her like he stole her, cause technically he did for a year. Not offroad, mud bog hard but used the inside like a pickup and never did any maintenance hard. So the plan is to make her nice! Wheels are going, lift is getting minimized, new front clip potentially, interior redone, some bugs worked out.

Oh, and that bumper has to go. It is all 1/4" steel and I am sure he had a lot of time in it, just not my flavor. Any takers?

Took her straight to buddy's shop last night with a 6 week hack time before a planned trip to Moab in March. We shall see. Bad pics below, need to go over her in detail and start a list.....

I’d find a newer 6.0 version that the motor is junk or questionable. Better transmission and google destroked out of wheat ridge Colorado (they are the premier parts swap company in the US) and drop a Cummins in it. They have all the parts and expertise to do the swap right. A ton of info on their site FYI. I’m going to be doing an 08-10 F350 w/ a 24v this summer.

Also note all excursions have a Dana 50 front, easy enough to source a Dana 60 from an F350

And as a guy who drives an excursion (v10 130+ on clock) that will be up for sale in a couple months it’s not a Denali it’s a truck. I’ve owned a Denali as well or my better half did......

And agreed, definitely will not be the same ride quality. Thankfully I have a really understanding wife, she drove a 2002 7.3 Crew Cab Long Bed single wheel F350 for several years before the third kiddo came. It was the length of a football field. Nice thing on an Excursion is it will actually fit in the garage!

Thanks guys, I appreciate the input. The search continues. Have one I am going to go look at this afternoon a couple hours away. Taking the car trailer so that always signals some level of commitment…

That’s is a dream finished trailer. Let’s see some inside photos of thAt.

I agree with the 6.0. With such a bad reputation people let them go for a lot less cash then a 7.3 and they had a newer looking body shape.

I will some photos next time the sun is out. I was fortunate to find a really clean one.

Hi Gents,

Wanted to throw this out there and see what you all thought.

We recently purchased a used 30' ATC Aluminum Toy Hauler that is around 7500 - 8,000 lbs to use to pull around to shooting matches we attend for our company. One of the main reasons is so we can take our whole family (wife and three kiddos at the moment, we homeschool and try to have the kiddos involved in everything.) My 1992 W250 pulls it adequately with what I have done to her (I will probably do a build thread on her at some point) but my wife's 2007 Yukon XL Denali is going to struggle with it. Cannot fit the whole family in the W250 so for the matches we all go to we have to figure something else out.

What I would like to purchase is a 2000-2002 7.3 Excursion 4x4. She had a single wheel 2002 7.3 F350 before the Denali and I liked the truck, just tough with the kiddos. Finding a 7.3 Excursion nice enough to put my wife has been an endeavor. There are a couple several states away but all in the low to mid $20's.

Here is where I would like some opinions: For that money I am tempted to find a cherry example of a gas Excursion and swap over to a P-Pump 12V. I am pretty familiar with the 12V and am making good power even with my rotary pump one in my W250 with better turbo, injectors, exhaust, timing advance, propane injection ect…. The motor and mating is not necessarily my concern, I know it has been done and looks like quite a few of you guys have done Cummins swap into a variety of rigs. The concern is making all the creature comforts work to avoid marital conflict that may come from swapping her out of the Denali in the Excursion - windows, cruise, accessories, ect.

What are your thoughts on difficulty of getting all those first world amenities to work after a swap?

Picture of camper we are looking to pull with it. Was really happy to find this one, 7,000 lb axles, all aluminum with .050" aluminum siding and a 6" lift on the camper for clearance. Buddy had just bought a brand new one from them $$ and we used it for a few matches before I saw this one for sale a few hours away. 2004 model, never really used. Literally had one trip to Sturgis on it and then parked.

I take it you are the owner or somehow affiliated to Foundation Stocks?  I was thinking there might be a connection with between your handle and the rifle pic, But just putting a rifle together with those specs kind of sealed it.  Travis Stevens tried talking me into a Foundation when I ordered my barreled action a little over 2 years ago now.  I think they were just starting to become available at that time.  Unfortunately it was not in my budget at the time.  A couple of the guys I shoot some of the local matches with have them though and it is definitely on the list of things I want to upgrade to.

Hi Bear9350,

Yes sir, we own Foundation Stocks. Travis Stevens is a great guy, have worked with TS Customs for a few years now. In fact he is building me a precision muzzleloader at the moment which I am pretty stoked about for next year. Small world, good to meet you Bear!

I just want to clarify.  Is that guy working on the truck one of yours is it one of ours Ken?   Muck boots and Tighty whities seems something Ken would doo.

Ha one of my boys, photo was from a few years back but I have another one that size now to utilize when the hand space requirement is too tight on Ole Blue!

Welcome Mr Foundation!

First things first. Disregard any and all comments coming from anyone here named Dave. Don't be fooled by their wit and false sense of compassion. The boss keeps them around only because of his twisted sense of humor.

That being said, nice projects, hope to see more.

Duly noted!

boom stick is strictly prohibited..

unless it’s followed up with specs and MOA accountability

carry on

Fair enough! Reasonable demands for sure - major specs are Foundation Revelation stock, Impact Precision titanium 737T action, Bartlein barrel (can't remember length or contour), chambered in 6.5 PRC, Nightforce NX8. It was a rifle put together for a photo shoot so I did not shoot that one. However if she didn't shoot bugholes something would be off!

Welcome aboard

Old trucks, family, kids, rifles and an FJ

What's not to like

I had a 75 FJ40 for many years

Thanks Flyin6. Your mechanical write up on your 6BT was/is extremely helpful to me.

Hi All,

Stumbled upon this forum doing research on an overdrive issue I had with my 1992 Dodge W250 (Thanks Flyin6!). Some really great stuff here and appears to be a solid community of good folks. Looking forward to engaging, learning and sharing our own build adventures.

Current build and daily is a 1992 Dodge W250 12V named Ole Blue. She is used as my daily as well as for traveling across country to precision rifle matches for our company. We are continually "upgrading" her and end goal is a healthy tow rig with overland capabilities. I can share what we have done so far for those interested.

Also working on a 1978 FJ40 to county road and trail with the kiddos. My first truck was a 1972 FJ40 so this 78' build will hopefully earn a place in my kiddos memories like mine did.

Few pics of Ole Blue and her mechanic, nice boom stick because I figure this crowd might like those too and one of the FJ40:

Thanks all!

JK
