Today after lovin' my G23 .40 Glock, but wanting to keep the bigger magazines of my G19, I bit the bullet and purchased a new 4th Generation Glock 19.

I thought I'd detail the new one against the well used and somewhat dirty older model. The new Glock has some features which make it worthy of consideration as a go to battle weapon.

First, old reliable the Gen 3 G19, followed by Mr. Pretty

The older glock had a one size fits all grip, whereas the new model has 5 different sized palm sizes due to the addition of these easily installed back straps.

I went big on mine with the large beavertail which is installed. The thinner back strap is shown beside the Gen 3

The previous glock mags no longer fit!

Naw, just kidding, they fit fine. Here is a Korean Army 33 round mag installed into the new weapon

Functionally, it seems to load a full magazine, digest ammo, and operate like it's older brother
Trigger pull is still the cushy longish 5.5 glock trademark which is where I have kept all the service pistiol I own, however after seeing what the ghost trigger mod does for shooting, there is a crate of ghost trigger parts headed to mi casa

Another big difference is the larger and much improved magazine release. Probably twice the size it gives positive mag releases all the time

The business end is a little different as the Gen 4 has a mo-better recoil spring with a wider seat in the slide which shows here

It is still riding on the same polymer shaft, but now there are two different springs. I have read that the dual combo reduces felt recoil and makes for a more positive slide racking during firing.

Don't know, will have to wait, and a 9mm doesn't recoil anyway, but we'll see on paper with timed double taps if it makes any difference

The barrels look the same...did I miss something? Well the Gen 3 barrel of my pistole here is now 9.4mm due to digesting a bunch of hot/fast copper

Mag well is the same, but the back strap of the G4 makes that area a bit different.

I wonder if the old plastic plugs people put in there still fit?

Big difference here as well. Now a glock shooter can have the old M1911 beavertail hand piece we knew and loved from shooting that anvil with a hole in one end

For some size comparison, the larger pistol is the 15 round G19 gen 4 and the slightly smaller is the 12 round 9mm M&P9C smith and Wesson, which is a great gun in its own right

And another comparison showing two (bottom) G19's, then a G23 and on the top the bulky G30, .45 auto with a G21 magazine. The top pistol is a big hammer but pushes the limits of a CC pistol by any metric.

I plan to develop my CC protection plan around the 9mm cartridge.

I'll install a couple modifications to the G19's and G23, work on the concealment problems and work around G17 mags with the +2 mag extender.

In standard CC mode I run with the pistol and one extra mag. By switching down to the 9mm from the .40, I would then be carrying 38 rounds of ammo with one mag change!

That's outstanding!

Throw a topped of 32 rounder in the glove box and you could hold off the ninjas until the air cav arrived to save the day!

No, the Gen4 plugs are slightly different, but they are like $7 or $8

IMO the guiderod mod is hype. I've seen torture tests done on glocks where they took turns firing a glock as fast as they could, speed loading and firing until they had fired 1000 rounds. The gun was so hot it boiled water when they dropped in a bowl to cool it off.

The guide rod melted and shot out the front at some point bu the weapon kept firing fine without the rod. Apparently its just there to hold the spring during assembly.
